Skins debuted on E4 10 years ago. We revisit a bold and unique adolescent drama that kick-started countless careers...
It’s been a decade since Skins, E4’s controversial teen drama, premiered. At the time, it was a source of anxiety for parents about what teenagers were getting up to when they weren’t looking, but for television executives it was pure gold. It achieved that rare feat - it got young people to watch and talk about it - and, after seven years of drinking, drugs and general debauchery, it bowed out in 2013.

Here's one of those 'This'll make you feel old' factoids - it's two years since the last ever episode of Skins aired.
E4's groundbreaking hormone-fest wrapped up on August 5, 2013 - with an older Cook (Jack O'Connell) heading off into an uncertain future at the close of 'Rise (Part Two)'.
Cook was but one of 27 major characters featured on Skins across three 'Generations' - in a total of 61 episodes, split into seven series. But where are the teen tearaways of Roundview College now?
Generation One
1. Nicholas Hoult
Hoult played Tony Stonem - the pre-eminent bad boy of Skins - across its first two series. Later badly hurt in a traffic accident and forced to rely on others, Tony had mellowed by his final episodes.
Now aged 25, Hoult has become a bona-fide Hollywood star with roles in this year's Mad Max: Fury Road and the much-anticipated book adaptations Dark Places and Kill Your Friends.

I’m starting to think that I should create a boilerplate introduction for generic found footage horror movies, just so I don’t have to keep repeating myself every time another one of these lost puppies ends up at my doorstep. Seriously. It seems like I’m cranking out at least one found footage review a week, most of which are built upon formulaic blocks made of cheap scares, poor production values, and weak storytelling.
My latest shaky-cam foray, Nightlight, is another jumbled found footage romp, but there’s something even sadder about this specific film – it didn’t have to suffer such a fate. There’s a fresh concept hidden beneath weak jolt-tactics and dim flashlights, but it’s never given a chance to breathe. You can’t force an urban legend, and that’s exactly what filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods attempt to do.

If you played games like Ghost in the Graveyard growing up, you might remember the way your skin prickled when you searched the shadows for your friend, who was, in turn, crouched out of sight and waiting to pounce out of the darkness when you got near. Those adrenaline-fueled moments of your youth could be resurrected in Lionsgate's Nightlight, hitting select theaters and VOD later this month. The film follows a group of teens as they head into the haunted Covington forest for a night of games and ghost stories, and we've been provided with an exclusive batch of photos from the film to share with Daily Dead readers:
"For years, the Covington forest has been shrouded in mystery, with a dark past as a final destination for troubled youths. Undeterred by the news of a classmate who recently took his life in those woods, five teens journey into the...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Lionsgate. Directors/writers: Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Cast: Shelby Young, Chloe Bridges, Carter Jenkins, Mitch Hewer, Taylor Murphy and Kyle Fain. Nightlight is a micro-budget horror feature from Herrick Entertainment. Shot in Salt Lake City, Utah, the film focuses on several friends and a night game of hide-and-go-seek, with spirits! The story also focuses on the loss of Ethan (Kyle Fain), a depressed, young man. He is shown only in the first few and final few frames. The rest of the film is chock full of chase sequences, dark settings and very little conflict. Even the horror tone of the film slips into thriller territory, with a tale of revenge finally emerging near the end of the picture. Nightlight is an indie film from an up-and-coming group of filmmakers, which is too short on story and full of...

Susan Olsen, who played Cindy Brady in The Brady Bunch, took to Facebook to write a moving tribute to the man who played her television dad, Robert Reed. "Bob was a family man. Had he been allowed to form a relationship with another man, he would have been the best husband ever and might still be alive. But Bob could not be at peace with this because the people surrounding him shoved their own judgment down his throat and, sadly, he bought into it. He thought he was wrong. He felt the shame that every hypocritical 'God is love' fundamentalist wanted him to feel."

Whether they believe it or not, brands have a political affiliation. News Corp. is obviously Republican, and a new study pegs my parent company, MTV, as strongly Democratic, opposite ends of the political spectrum of the brands surveyed.

This month the highly-anticipated sitcom Partners premiered, with Michael Urie and David Krumholtz playing best friends and business partners inspired by the real-life friendship between Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnik and David Kohan. The big deal is, of course, that these two guys are best friends despite one’s being straight and the other’s being gay. I know – Can You Imagine?!?!
Yes, we can. Though our entertainments tend to like to plop us gay guys at the ladies' table, many of us have wonderfully rich relationships with straight men, sexualities be damned. And while Partners may be the highest-profile project that specifically tackles the topic of "bro/'mos" (Patent Pending), over the years there have been some great movies and shows that have featured best buds who bat for different teams. Here are a few of our faves.

The first episode of MTV's "Skins" premieres Monday (Jan. 17) and follows the UK version very closely, but there's one glaring omission.
The exuberant and full of life Maxxie Oliver (played infectiously by Mitch Hewer in the original series) is nowhere to be found. In his place stands Sofia Black-d'Elia as Tea, a lesbian to Maxxie's gay and a cheerleader to his dancer.
"She's a very confident, self assured girl," Black-d'Elia tells Zap2it. "She's very assertive and also very funny at times."
You'd think that playing a lesbian character on national television would be a daunting prospect for Black-d'Elia, but she tells us that there were other aspects of Tea that she feared more.
"I wasn't really concerned with the sexuality part," she says. "To me, the more daunting part of her was how confident she is. I'm 18 years old. I'm not that confident yet. So, yeah, I wasn't really uncomfortable with it at all.

Bryan Elsley has defended changes made in the upcoming Us remake of Skins. In the new version of the British drama currently being developed by MTV, gay teen Maxxie (Mitch Hewer) has been replaced by a lesbian character, Tea (played by Sophia Black D'Elia). In other words, there's a big open audition and the characters always emerge from what is there in front of me." The writer explained that he had not found (more)...

When it comes to anticipation of remakes of British shows for American audiences, it’s fair to say few have been as eagerly anticipated as is MTV’s remake of the smash UK series Skins. A heady mix of sex, drugs, and youthful rebellion, Skins has proven to be a hit around the world (thanks to the internet) with the British version not only entering its fourth season, but with a movie version in the works.
What might a U.S. version look like? Will it include the frank language and depiction of drug use and sexual activity of the original? Gay viewers are especially curious to see if the U.S. version will include an out gay character similar to Maxxie from Series 1 in the UK.
Based on casting sides from the pilot of the American Skins, the answer to all of the above is yes. That shouldn’t be surprising as the U.

We asked you which gay or bisexual TV characters you think are the best, and you told us – with tens of thousands of votes cast.
Now we have the results.
But first, a few interesting statistics.
We have quite a few familiar faces – characters who made our last poll of the best gay and bisexual characters two and a half years ago – and a few missing ones, namely Vince D’Angelo (from Will & Grace), George Huang (from Law & Order: Svu), and Waylon Smithers (from The Simpsons), all of whom didn’t even make the top 50 this time around.
Meanwhile, we also have many new faces – from shows that have debuted since our last poll.
Every single character except two comes from a show that ran in the 00s (although some shows, like Will & Grace, did debut in the late 90s). The exceptions? Jodie Dallas, played by Billy Crystal, on Soap...

Here are a couple of pictures that claim to be from the initial taping of Skins USA. Take this with a grain of salt though because we haven’t verified it, plus they look more like they’re playing dress up as the original cast than anything else. And I think I’m disappointed in the new Maxxie, who is no Mitch Hewer.
Joe.My.God has the video from Second City of the sequel to Sassy Gay Friend. This time he takes on Romeo & Juliet.
Byu Management Society has announced they’re giving an award to anti-gay Nom board member Orson Scott Card at their annual gala. While not surprising, it still inspires me to have a book burning.
Here is some happy news that Scott Evan’s older brother finally got an acting job. Chris Evans will star in the R-rated comedy What’s Your Number with Anna Faris.

A Single Man, The Weinstein Company's Oscar bet this year, is a fascinating study of characters. Based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood, it depicts one day in the life of George, a middle-aged gay Englishman who works as a college professor in Los Angeles and whose lover, Jim, has recently died. - - -
- - - Playing Kenny, "a pretty-boy college student who appears to be stalking George (Colin Firth)", is Nicholas Hoult. During its La Press day, tMF was able to secure a phone interview with the young British actor. It must have been a tiresome day for Nicholas Hoult, but I never noticed, even once, any indication. Hoult was quite charming, seriously answered all my questions and even volunteered to add a few tidbits or two. What's so interesting is that he's very courteous, unlike some of the young actors based in Hollywood.

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: Just wondering if there is any information on Star Trek hottie Anton Yelchin's orientation? -- Logan, Terre Haute, In
Anton Yelchin as Star Trek's Ensign Checkov
A: I confess I was confused by the casting of Yelchin as Chekov, because unlike the rest of the new Enterprise crew, he doesn’t look anything like original actor Walter Koenig, not even when you really, really squint.
On the other hand, Yelchin deliberately hams up the Russian accent, just like Koenig, apparently for comic relief. (Interestingly, both Yelchin and Koenig really are of Russian decent, with parents who emigrated to the U.S. Yelchin even has an accent in real life.)
The 20-year-old actor (who also appears in Terminator Salvation) has indicated in interviews that he’s straight.

After triumphing for two years in a row, Jake Gyllenhaal is not the winner of our third annual AfterElton.com Hot 100 poll (see the results for 2007 here and 2008 here). So which out man did take the top spot? If you’re the kind of person who always burns their mouth biting into that piping hot chocolate chip cookie, you can just cheat and go here to learn who came in first place.
Here at AfterElton.com, we’re thrilled to announce an out gay man topped this year’s list – especially this particular man as most of us voted for him as well. In fact, out gay men snagged nearly 20% of the spots, including the top three. To be sure, we’ve nothing against our straight male crushes, but it says something great about 2009 that there are so many out men to choose from.

Chicago – Things are a little light in the world of the DVD Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s popular feature that grabs titles that may have fallen through the cracks while you were busy refreshing your Netflix queue to see if “The Reader,” “Frost/Nixon,” and “The Wrestler” are going to ever be shipped your way.
This week’s Round-Up may be missing an Oscar winner like Kate Winslet, but there’s some definite quality here including a buzzed indie horror film, a beloved BBC hit, and one of the best shows on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Do your part and pick up one of these at least for rent. Broaden your horizons.
“Skins: Volume Two” was released on April 14th, 2009.
“Squidbillies: Volume Two” and “The Burrowers” were released on April 21st, 2009.

The American edit of Skins: Volume 1 left off a rather sublime ending of Sid singing "Wild World" by Cat Stevens as the gang finishes out their night's activities. The ending takes on a decidedly different, cheerier feeling but was it more appropriate than the Us version? After a crazy night of debauchery, there were friendships broken, lives imperiled and so forth - but most importantly Tony has been hit by a bus. Walking around singing a Cat Stevens song is interesting, though a bit corny, and doesn't quite end on the melancholy note required for a proper transition into Skins: Volume 2. Considering the events of Skins: Volume 2 the upbeat UK ending seems even more deceptive and inappropriate; maybe that was the series' creators' attempts at Shakespearian levity between bouts of tragedy or maybe it was genuinely a moment of...

Channel 4 drama Skins has been nominated for a top prize at America's top gay awards ceremony. The teen sex-craze television programming phenomenon has existed and thrived for the last 20 years. In its heyday the genre had titles like 90210, Melrose Place, Dawson's Creek and Party of Five. Its library has since evolved into a more exploitative monster, one content with infusing teen culture with more sexual tension than it knows what to do with. The Oc, The Hills and Gossip Girl have made sexual explicitness their calling card and leave little room for competition unwilling to push the envelope quite as far themselves - so what possibility for competition exists? Portraying sexuality in a way that more closely mirrors what exists within the culture. BBC America's Skins, while still a work of fiction, possesses an entirely different view on teenaged sexuality based on one simple criterion: it's not American based - it's British. While I dislike making the distinction between quality of features purely based on regional origin,...
