1Up is a new microcinema based in Perth, Australia that is launching with a very ambitious slate of screenings this summer. So far, they’ve released their full schedule for the months of June and July that includes a film almost every night of the week, and sometimes two films.
These are movies that have played on the international festival circuit, but many have not been released yet. So this is a rare treat to still see many of them still in a theater setting, even a 20-seat microcinema like 1Up.
The summer screening series kicks off with one of the best films to come out of Australia in recent years: Stuart Simpson’s vicious throwback to ’60s B-movie madness, El Monstro Del Mar, which was reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film last year.
Other movies that 1Up will be screening include such festival hits such as Best Worst Movie,...

Every year Austin Film Festival hosts the "Hair of the Dog" brunch, and at the 2010 event I met Under the Boardwalk: The Monopoly Story co-producer Craig Bentley and director/co-producer Kevin Tostado, pictured above. The pair could be found passing out "money" during the fest or playing Monopoly in the Driskill Bar. Their engaging documentary appeals to both young and old with a nostalgic look at a cultural phenomenon enjoyed for almost a century and loved across the world -- read my review.
If you've yet to see Under the Boardwalk: The Monopoly Story, don't miss your chance. The Alamo Drafthouse will be hosting a special screening at the Lake Creek theater on Monday, May 23 at 7 pm. I'm disappointed I missed the Monopoly playing party along with Mr. Monopoly's appearance at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar earlier this week, but I can console myself with a friendly game at...

Few board games have experienced as much longevity, generated as many memories (fond or, ahem, otherwise) or inspired as passionate tournament play as Monopoly. Director Kevin Tostado has assembled a slick documentary that juxtaposes the history, politics and cultural influence of the ever-popular Parker Brothers game with brief profiles of the people who play it — and play it seriously. For, yes, there are Monopoly tournaments: Every few years (the gaps between championships vary tourney to tourney), a World Monopoly Champion is named. “Under the Boardwalk” records the events leading up to the most recent World Championship, held in Las Vegas in 2009.
These scenes are filmed unadorned, without dramatic camera angles (which would have disrupted game play) or music. Yet they’re fraught with the tension of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, as Tostado has taken care...

Co- producer Craig Bentley and director/co-producer Kevin Tostado took a break in the Driskill Bar before hitting Sunday afternoon panels at Austin Film Festival. That's pretty serious dedication to the game that is the subject of their documentary Under the Boardwalk: The Monopoly Story. This film portrays the well-loved classic board game that is a worldwide cultural phenomenon. We also see vignettes of several players who compete for the title of Monopoly World Champion, including past winners and new underdogs.
Had I not been preparing for an interview with Dax Shepard and his fellow filmmakers from the movie Brother's Justice, I would have asked to join Bentley and Tostado for a quick lesson in auctioning property. Read what I thought about Under the Boardwalk in my review. Here's a clue, though -- after watching, I'm eyeing the "Star Trek: Continuum" Monopoly on Amazon.com now. Remember, the movie plays...

After feeling extremely disappointed in a documentary that I highly anticipated due to its subject, I was hesitant to see another documentary on a topic I thought I had less interest in -- the game of Monopoly. Sure, I played the game as a kid, but I'd expect a feature-length film about a board game would be dry and boring. I'm not too proud to admit that the filmmakers behind Under the Boardwalk: The Monopoly Story proved me wrong. Kevin Tostado directed and co-wrote along with Craig Bentley a delightfully engaging piece on a classic game that is firmly rooted in households across the world. The game is now sold in over 110 countries around the world in 40 languages, although as stated in the film, Monopoly "doesn't get translated, it gets located."
