If Coachella stages were categorized as internet slang, last week, Heineken House was the Iykyk (If you know, you know) of the nation’s most prominent music festival. Tucked away in the corner of the Empire Polo Club grounds on the festival’s opening weekend, Heineken set up the perfect oasis to bop your head, sip a lager, and take a beat to lounge in the grass while getting away from the crowds — until, of course, the crowds caught word and made their way inside.

At the outset of PBS’ docuseries Fight the Power: How Hip-Hop Changed the World, Chuck D asserts, “[In 2020], the Black Lives Matter protests wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for hip-hop.” It’s a lofty statement, as anti-establishment organizing and revolt have existed since Black people were brought to America. Hip-hop has augmented social movements since its 1973 founding; as Lupe Fiasco notes in the finale of the four-part series, ”Hip-hop is gonna supply you the theme song for the moment.”

Bringing together the best of music from Spanish-speaking countries, the Latin field at the Grammys is always one of the most diverse and exciting. With the rapidly-growing exposure of Latin music to global audiences, this year’s nominees reflect a mix of huge names like Rosalía, Bad Bunny, and Christina Aguilera, as well as Latin legends like Rubén Blades and Fito Páez. But alas, only one will be walking away with each honor.

Cimafunk was racing through the airport in Havana last month after spending five days in Cuba with his family. He had to catch a flight to Florida, but just before he boarded, his phone kept ringing again and again. When he finally answered, his team was on the other line, telling him that El Alimento — the funk album he’d worked on quietly with the producer Jack Splash in 2021 — had just been nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.

Hiro Murai was directing music videos for pop songs before he began collaborating with Donald Glover on their dreamy FX series "Atlanta." Now, Murai's directing credits include not only the majority of "Atlanta" but also several episodes of the acclaimed HBO series "Barry" and "Station Eleven." Glover recognized Murai's creative genius the first time he saw his work in 2013. From there they would collaborate on a number of groundbreaking projects, including a short film, several music videos, and their hit television show.
The "Atlanta" director created music videos for huge hits like B.O.B.'s "Airplanes" and Lupe Fiasco's "The Show Goes On" — both "traditional glossy pop videos," which "didn't feel as fun," Murai told Interview. In 2012, he started to work with smaller artists like Earl Sweatshirt, and his creative juices began to flow. The Chuck D-produced PBS docuseries “Fight The Power: How Hip Hop Changed The World” will premiere January 31, 2023, the network said Wednesday.
Developed by the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and frontman of Public Enemy, the series will feature firsthand accounts from other rap legends such as Ice-t, Fat Joe, Run Dmc, Mc Lyte, will.i.am., Lupe Fiasco and more as it looks to delve into how hip-hop created a provocative narrative of America, PBS said at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour.

When Cooper Raiff pitched Dakota Johnson on a film about a college grad who’s great at starting bar and bat mitzvah parties but clueless about starting his adult life, she was immediately in.
There was just one problem: he didn’t have a script.
Still, the idea of “Cha Cha Real Smooth” – inspired by something his mom once told him about how raising his disabled sister had shaped her life – was strong enough for him to bluff his way through.

A documentary series spanning over two decades of footage and home videos of Kanye West’s life and work has landed at Netflix.
Billboard, which first reported the news, cites sources putting the price tag at Netflix at $30 million, though a person familiar with the matter tells Variety that that is not an accurate figure. The series is said to include never-before-seen footage of West, and will cover his career in music and fashion, his failed 2020 presidential bid, and the death of his mother, Donda West.

Sony Music has begun to distribute the $750 million in profit it collected from the April sale of 50% of its Spotify shares to the artists and distributed labels within the Sony system, Variety has confirmed. As previously reported, Sony, which held 5.7% of Spotify’s stock when the streaming service went public, will not count the funds against the artists’ and label’s unrecouped earnings.
Rather, the “Spotify windfall,” as Sme insiders are calling the disbursement, will be apportioned according to individual artist and label contract terms and based on earnings over the last 10 years — or since Sony’s initial investment in the Swedish streaming upstart — divisible against Sony’s own revenues from the Spotify stock gain for that time period.
What does this mean to the thousands of artists, representatives and some two million titles involved? The checks are in the mail, and set to arrive by the end of August.

There’s a streak of fierce independence in Taylor Bennett, and it’s not because he also happens to be Chance the Rapper’s little brother. The Chicago-based artist has been carving his own lane in the city’s stacked hip-hop community with promising and ebullient full-length projects like 2015’s Broad Shoulders and 2017’s Restoration of an American Idol, started his own record label, Tay Bennett Entertainment, which boasts singer Bianca Shaw and recent signee Zxxk, and came out as bisexual in early 2017. But with his latest effort, the life-affirming six-song Ep Be Yourself,...

John D. Tucker, Director Pas Honteux
Directed by John D. Tucker Pas Honteux is the story of a young African American slacker who wakes up one day speaking only French. The film brings to light the fact that we not only judge people by their looks but also by the way they speak.
So, what if a young urban African American wakes up and suddenly speaks only French?
The film begins and takes off from there and must be seen to be believed. It jumps from modern hip-hop inspired visuals to sharp contrast new wave bringing new meaning to both styles of filmmaking.
It turns out that the only person he can now communicate with is an older homeless street dwelling man who can speak French to him and they bond.
The film stars Travis Labranch (Shots Fired), Leon Lamar, and Javicia Leslie, is written by Sundance Alum Marcus J.

Over the course of “Mr. Robot’s” run, composer Mac Quayle has done a pretty effective job creating an eerie and ethereal (etheerieal?) backdrop to one man’s psychological self-sabotage. The ongoing trials of Elliot Alderson have been underscored by electronic-heavy instrumentals, highlighting the character in moments of triumph and moments of despair (more on that later).
As good as Quayle has been, the series has also benefited from a finely curated set of musical moments, with some of the most memorable “Mr. Robot” sequences bolstered by an impeccable soundtrack selected by music supervisors Amie Bond and Charlie Haggard. Some of these have been the numerous string of classical favorites used to set up Tyrell Wellick in various stages of upper-class crises. Others have drawn on electronic music icons that have influenced the show in more ways than one.

This review contains spoilers for parts one and two of Unmasked.
There’s an interesting, understated moment near the end of eps2.0unm4sk-pt1.tc, the typically byzantine spelling of “Part One” of the Mr. Robot season two premiere.
A woman is in line at Evil Corp’s Bank of E, desperately trying to show the teller behind the counter that she has paid off all her bills with the bank but the teller isn’t having it. The teller says that since F Society hacked into Evil Corp’s systems and erased all of their consumers’ debts, people have been presenting falsified documents showing that they’ve paid off their debts.
It’s interesting because it goes so far against the unbridled and unfocused euphoria that closed out USA Network...

A month after f.society took down Evil Corp, our dear friend Elliot Alderson has devolved into the most simplistic, efficient version of himself. Spinning around over and over in the same infinitely repeatable loop of monochromatic humanity, Elliot’s turned himself into a walking hard drive in Mr. Robot‘s triumphant return, revolving over and over around the same point, writing all of his data down as he goes along. Round and round we go, as Lupe Fiasco’s Wallace Collection-sampling “Daydream” plays over the show’s haunting opening credits – and as the thrilling two-part season premiere plays out, we observe exactly what happens

Three years ago, Kanye shocked rap snobs when a "Black Skinhead" remix with Miley Cyrus was rumored to be in the works (remember, this was at peak #twerkgate), only for it never to materialize. Fast-forward a few stolen laptops and a supposed G.O.O.D. Friday reboot later, and that unfinished remix has finally made its way onto the interwebs, leaking Wednesday night. What does a Miley-Kanye union from 2013 sound like in 2016? Like 1985, apparently — if we're to go off Miley's cover of Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," which makes up the majority of the considerably toned-down song. Travis Scott and Lupe Fiasco may or may not also appear on the track. Everything may or may not be right with the world.

Anime is having a small moment in hip-hop: Earlier this year, Lupe Fiasco named his latest album Tetsuo & Youth, partly after the teen biker from the massively popular Japanese manga series Akira. Incorporating that influence even deeper into his music is Logic, a 25-year-old rapper from Maryland whose just-released sophomore album intersects the worlds of anime and rap. The Incredible True Story is a concept album set 100 years in the future, during a time when Earth's remaining 5 million must live aboard a spaceship. Steve Blum, who voiced Spike Spiegel on the anime series Cowboy Bebop, plays Quentin Thomas, the captain of a ship traveling to another planet. As much as Logic admittedly fanboys out to anime, he's well aware not everyone shares his passion for "nerd stuff." (He can solve a Rubik's cube in one minute and emails with Neil deGrasse Tyson; don't even try and outnerd...

When Meek Mill called out Drake on Twitter for not writing his own raps, jaws hit the floor, supporters and detractors rallied, and ... questions arose. One: What's the deal with ghostwriting, anyway? Was it common knowledge Drake had someone? What about people like Kanye? Well, fortunately, Lupe Fiasco is here to reteach Hip-Hop Ghostwriting 101 with a lesson plan titled "The Haunting." In two lengthy Instagram posts, he pens an open letter (with a cool picture of a Charlie Brown ghost) to rappers everywhere, hoping to clear up any confusion or misdirected frustration. "Ghostwriting, or borrowing lines, or taking suggestions from the room has always been in rap and will always be in rap," he writes. "It is nothing to go crazy over or be offended about unless you are someone who postures him or herself on the importance of authenticity and tries to portray that quality to your...

On the heels of the Charleston slayings, Nas took to Instagram on Tuesday to write an open letter to America. The rapper pleads in a galvanizing call to action for his countrymen to move forward, not backward, noting that a war pitting Americans against Americans is raging in cities across the nation. "We are supposed to stand for freedom & equal opportunity," he wrote. "This is Bigger than Black and White. This is about America selling a false dream." He adds that he doesn't understand how black citizens can be viewed as so crucial to American culture, but aren't afforded a sense of belonging or protection. With hopes of starting a constructive conversation about the matter, Nas concludes: "This is my home just like it is anyone else's."Read the whole missive — which came shortly after Nas's industry comrade-in-arms Lupe Fiasco posted a similarly executed, equality-centric address on his own...

In the wake of the Charleston church shooting, rapper Lupe Fiasco took to Instagram to express his frustration over the notion of white supremacy. The three-part post, featuring pictures of confessed shooter Dylann Roof, is likely to have been a response to the 21-year-old’s purported racist manifesto in which Roof trashed African-Americans, Jews and Hispanics. He also wrote that he wanted to start a race war. “There is nothing about you biologically or physically that denotes an innate mode of supremacy. In the wake of last week's brutal Charleston slayings, rapper Lupe Fiasco took to Instagram to excoriate Dylann Storm Roof, as well as the hate group the latter embraced. Fiasco unpacked and highlighted the hypocrisy of the white-supremacy movement in a miniseries of three posts, all of which included disturbing pics of Roof. "What you really are is something in the middle," he wrote. "White Supremacy is a lie white regularists tell to themselves in hopes that they can get a one way ticket to the top and hope we other colors overhear it." The rapper's open letter mixes sarcasm and brutal honesty to explain racial regularity and the delusion of superiority; at time of publication, every image had more than 4,000 likes. Here's the whole missive (pics included): A letter.
