The lasting confrontation of the book lovers and the cinephiles doesn’t seem to come to a conclusion. However, some series based on the novels and on the games are known for objectively better elaboration of the source’s events and character development.
Here are 7 TV titles which surpass the material they were adapted from.
The Boys (2019 – …)
The live-action adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s superhero comic book series appears to be more relevant and worth a try as it adds a razor-sharp social commentary to the initial plot, also improving the development of the main characters.
Dexter (2006-2013)
Based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, this crime series is more recognized by its creative screenwriting decisions, including the more intricate description of the serial killer’s personal life and ways of performing the crimes.

Cage is hitting the beach!
Having recently saddled up for his first Western, Nicolas Cage looks set to ride some waves for the first time on screen, having been cast to lead elevated psychological thriller The Surfer from director Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium, Nocebo) and screenwriter Thomas Martin.
Mossbank, the partnership between Sculptor Media and Raven and headed by Michael Rothstein and Sam Hall, is handling international sales and introducing The Surfer to buyers at the Cannes Market. Domestic sales will be repped by WME Independent.
In The Surfer, when a man (Cage) returns to his beachside hometown in Australia, many years since building a life for himself in the U.S., he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a local gang of surfers who claim strict ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood. Wounded, “The Surfer” decides to remain at the beach, declaring war against those in control of the bay.

Oh, Dexter. That lovable scamp. The Showtime crime drama series that housed the disturbed forensic analyst (played by Michael C. Hall) racked up a sky-high body count over its eight-season run, and even more in its 2021 limited revival series "Dexter: New Blood." Though the first season of the "Dexter" series was based on Jeff Lindsay's "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" novels, the protagonist -- a blood spatter technician with the Miami Metro Police Department, moonlighting as a vigilante killer -- goes beyond the works of his creator, tallying over 140 kills from 2006-2013.
But which season had the most Dexter-responsible deaths of them all? Finding the...

Showtime's "Dexter" made a name for itself by combining police procedurals and America's obsession with true crime. Adapted from Jeff Lindsay's novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter," the scripted drama featured a new kind of monster, the psychopath with a heart of gold. Dexter Morgan is a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department by day and a serial killer by night. Governed by a strict ethical code created by his adopted father Harry, Dexter (mostly) only kills other murderers intending to close the gaps left by a fallible legal system. The show's success is largely due to the stellar performance of Michael C. Hall, who manages...

This article contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood.
Regardless of what some fans and critics thought about Showtime’s Dexter revival, Dexter: New Blood has officially become the network’s most-watched series of all time. The show’s 10-episode run averaged around 8 million viewers a week. That’s more than Showtime’s previous signature series, Homeland, and the 3 million viewers that watched the Dexter: New Blood finale helped the revival overcome Homeland season 3’s finale in 2013 to become the most watched season finale on the network. Further, two million of those viewers came from streaming and on-demand platforms, setting another new record for Showtime.
“We’re thrilled by the overwhelming response from the millions of fans of Dexter: New Blood these past 10 weeks,” said the entertainment president of Showtime Networks, Gary Levine. “Whether they loved the finale or couldn’t bear to see it end, we so appreciate their passion.

We knew it wouldn't be long until Dexter gave in to his Dark Passenger, but it's always more fun to watch him cover his tracks.
On Dexter: New Blood Season 1 Episode 2, that's exactly what he does.
Dexter is more at odds with himself than ever before, but his self-preservation instincts are still intact.
Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) is much more animated "conscience" to Dexter than Harry.
No disrespect to James Remar -- he was always solid -- but as Dexter's priorities and actions have shifted, so has the adversarial voice in his head, foul-mouthed and full of rage.
Carpenter rips and tears into this new version of her old character with her teeth bare, shredding Dexter every chance she gets.
You don't have to enjoy the wins so much, you smug fuck.

In the pantheon of shows known for having the “worst series finale” of all time, Showtime’s “Dexter” is right at the top. Since the episode titled “Remember the Monsters?” originally aired eight years ago, anti-hero serial killer Dexter Morgan faking his own death and pivoting to becoming a lumberjack has been a shorthand for what a show shouldn’t do when it finally ends, even if it’s ending on top or on its own terms. And while “Dexter” remained a hit for Showtime — lasting 96 episodes over eight seasons — plenty of arguments have been made by fans and critics that the series should’ve ended with its fourth season, the much beloved Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) season. That would also be the final season with original series showrunner Clyde Phillips — who is back as showrunner for “Dexter: New Blood” — before series writer Scott Buck took the reins.

The series finale of Showtime serial killer drama Dexter is, let’s say, not particularly well-liked.
After eight seasons of the monstrous Dexter Morgan murdering other monsters, the show’s season 8 finale let him off the hook in unsatisfying fashion. The former Miami-Dade P.D. blood splatter analyst left everything behind for a fresh start in Oregon as a lumberjack, making a case for “lumberjacking” to overtake “jumping the shark” as the preferred term for televised disappointment.
With the plot set to pick up again in limited series Dexter: New Blood, star Michael C. Hall is once again making public amends for how things ended the first time around. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hall (who is also an executive producer on the show) acknowledged fan’s finale frustrations.
“I totally get people’s dissatisfaction with the way the show ended ’cause it didn’t really end,” Hall told Et.

Revisiting one of the biggest roles of your career after nearly 10 years could be overwhelming. But how does Michael C. Hall feel about returning to the iconic role of beloved serial killer for Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood? He does a pretty good job of explaining in TV Insider’s exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette, seen above. The series is returning to the cabler on Sunday, November 7, when we pick up with the very much alive Dexter Morgan (who faked his death in a hurricane in the original series’ finale in 2013). Now, we find him going by the name Jim Lindsay and living a seemingly normal, low key life in the fictional town of Iron Lake, New York. While working at a bait-and-tackle shop in the small town, Dexter has become adept at quieting any of his “dark passenger” instincts that previously led him to ...

It’s about bloody time! Die-hard Dexter fans who didn’t love the 2006–13 series’ controversial finale — principled serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) faked his death and went into hiding in Oregon — get a do-over with this 10-episode revival. The former Miami Pd blood spatter expert now resides in idyllic (fictional) Iron Lake, New York, under the name Jim Lindsay (a nod to Dexter novelist Jeff Lindsay). He “is trying to be as innocuous and untempted [to kill] as possible,” explains exec producer Clyde Phillips. (Credit: Seacia Pavao/Showtime) But this truck-stop town “is sort of a Bermuda Triangle of women who go missing.” Which means Dexter’s Dark Passenger — the inner voice that leads him to eliminate bad guys — can’t be ignored. Continues Phillips: “This is Dexter, so people are going to die.” One target: the imposing Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown), who “has too much bad history.” Expect to see a few familiar faces,...

The Dark Passenger is back. Dexter Morgan is returning to Showtime in Dexter: New Blood, and the new limited series appears to be aiming to erase the, let’s call it contentious, reputation of the Dexter series finale. You can check out the first look at Dexter: New Blood below.
Michael C. Hall is back as everyone’s favorite compulsive serial killer, this time taking up residence in snowy upstate New York under the alias Jim Lindsay (the name appears to be a nod to Dexter creator Jeff Lindsay). Dexter is once again hiding in plain sight, but he knows that “Every day I walk through this world, faking it. Knowing if someone knows who I am, that’s it.” Dex doesn’t appear to have changed his look much, meaning that in the world of Dexter, you can still count on the FBI to be pretty incompetent.

Michael C. Hall — serial killer Dexter Morgan himself — has known since Showtime’s serial killer drama “Dexter” ended that a return to the character was a possibility. Instead of being killed off in the end, he only faked his death, leaving his young son with another killer (Yvonne Strahovski) and hiding out as a lumberjack.
“It’s come up in different forms,” Hall said of revivals during the show’s Comic-Con@Home panel on Sunday. “It never felt quite right in terms of the story that was presented or in terms of the timing. But, I think, along with everybody on this panel and along with everybody who’s ever watched the show and is a fan of the show, I myself have also wondered what the hell happened to this guy. Nearly a decade since everyone’s favorite serial killer moved away and became a logger in 2013, Showtime’s Dexter is back—at Comic-Con@Home, at least. The show’s big return to Comic-Con featured Michael C. Hall, series showrunner from seasons 1-4, Clyde Phillips, executive producers Marcos Siega and Scott Reynolds, and Julia Jones, who will make her debut in the limited series as Dexter’s love interest Angela Bishop.

You can change your name, but you can't change who you are. This message rings loud and true in the latest teaser for Showtime's Dexter revival. In the new sneak peek, which was released Thursday, May 26, America's favorite serial killer is seen slaying it at small town life. So, how has Dexter (Michael C. Hall) put his lethal past behind him? Well, by becoming a totally different person. "Morning, Jimmy," one neighbor notes at the start of the clip. Later on, a group of students refer to Dexter as "Mr. Lindsay." We have a feeling this is an ode to Jeff Lindsay, who wrote the Darling Dexter book series that inspired the show. And while Dexter appears to be fully integrated into...

According to returning showrunner Clyde Phillips, Dexter’s new 10-episode limited revival at Showtime will seek a more fitting ending for the series, after fans were left largely disappointed by the Season 8 finale that saw Michael C. Hall’s serial killer retiring to the Pacific Northwest to become a lumberjack.
Phillips, who was in charge of the better first half of the Miami-set crime drama, says that the revival won’t exactly “undo” what happened at the end of Season 8, but instead “basically start from scratch.”
“We want this to not be Dexter season nine,” Phillips informed THR on its Top 5 podcast via NME. “10 years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. Game Of Thrones has officially reached the level of cultural phenomenon. Some would argue that it reached those dizzy heights (or terrifying lows, depending on your attitude towards pop culture) a couple of years ago, with context-free references to Lannisters, dragons and the ugly fate of Ned Stark being picked up for talk show opening monologues and bad stand-up since about late 2012.
But the benchmark of a true crossover into the mainstream is when a product is such a massive success that everyone else starts to want their very own version of it. Look at Nirvana in 1991, kickstarting a ‘scene’ in and around their hometown of Seattle among half a dozen or so completely disparate bands. Remember Twilight? Yes, so does everyone else, hence the rush to convert every supernatural young adult book under the full moon into a PG-13 movie franchise in the last six years or so.

Television and the assortment of shows it kindly brings us is approaching its 100th birthday. It’s safe to say that a great deal of the excellent ideas, the great ideas, the good ideas and even the average ideas for programmes have been done to death. In fact, most of them have probably had a remake or a reboot along the way. But then there are the bad ideas. The real stinkers that live in the dark recesses of writers minds. Usually these dark life forms are kept locked away but occasionally they break free and are made. Usually, they’re quickly identified by highly-skilled observers (the audience), rounded up and shot (or cancelled if you prefer).
On rarer occasions still, these bad ideas become the television equivalent of the ugly duckling. Butt ugly on paper but they grow into something quite wonderful. Because two years ago, if you...

When a book becomes a hit, topping bestseller lists and leaving store shelves vacant, one question always quickly follows: “When will it be turned into a movie?”
Audiences have seen this time and time again, with major examples being Gone with the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Lord of the Rings series, among many others.
Adapting literature to film can be a win-win situation, as it provides an original story with a built-in audience that will likely buy tickets come opening day. At the same time, not every book translates to box-office success, with some vehicles being better suited to a smaller medium — like TV.
Creating TV adaptations of beloved literature is not a new phenomenon, but it’s one TV executives should increasingly consider in the face of a disappointing fall season.

“I just know there’s something dark in me and I hide it. I certainly don’t talk about it, but it’s there always, this…dark passenger. And when he’s driving, I feel alive, half sick with the thrill of complete wrongness.
I don’t fight him, I don’t want to. He’s all I’ve got. Nothing else could love me, not even… especially not me.
Or is that just a lie the Dark Passenger tells me? Because lately there are these moments when I feel connected to something else… someone. It’s like the mask is slipping and things… people… who never mattered before are suddenly starting to matter. It scares the hell out of me”

Now that Dexter has concluded it’s time for a definitive ranking of the seasons. I’m braced for your blowback because season 4 is Not #1 on my list (scandal!). Be sure to check out our series finale recap and Q&A with the Dexter producers about that ending and the final season. See what you think:

It's been a quarter of a century since Thomas Harris's cultured cannibal exploded on the thriller scene, winning fictional killers a place in our hearts for ever
Can it really be a whole quarter of a century since Hannibal Lecter took up residence in our cultural landscape with the immortal line, "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti"?
Well, actually, no. It is indeed 25 years since Thomas Harris's The Silence of the Lambs was first published, but that famous quote is from Jonathan Demme's highly rated 1991 movie adaptation of the book; Harris's original line did indeed have the sociopathic psychiatrist chowing down on the offal of a census taker who "tried to quantify me once", but in the original text the cannibalistic serial killer's wine of choice is "a big Amarone". Perhaps chianti was the preferred plonk of Anthony Hopkins, who portrayed...

The question isn't when "Dexter" will end. The question is how.
The series that has made a hero of a serial killer of criminals begins its eighth and final season Sunday, June 30, on Showtime ... and it has changed its game so many times during its run, it's anyone's guess as to the ultimate fate of forensics expert Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall). And, for that matter, of his protective-to-a-fault half sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter).
Her discovery of his secret, lethal life at the end of Season 6 made Season 7 a wild ride, as she struggled to do her job as detective and spokeswoman for the Miami Police Department while not exposing his crimes. She ultimately had to make a phenomenally tough choice: Give him up or kill their boss, who finally had figured out the truth about Dexter. And as she typically has, Debra stayed on Dexter's side.

The pilot episode of a show that you love represents a vacation in time, a chance to go back down memory lane and smile, grin or laugh at the way things once were. The awkwardness of first meetings, how different they were as people, the sense of blind wonder at what may come; it’s an oddly personal experience, rather like remembering your first day of college. Like watching old home movies, the nostalgia is mixed with embarrassment, amusement and, perhaps in small doses, regret. Even the best shows can have strange pilot episodes, full of quirks that were quickly dropped without explanation, elements that were mostly best left out, some which sadly didn’t make the transition from trial run to the full program.

If you're looking forward to seeing Dexter Morgan enter the world of comic books, then you should be very relieved to learn that the first issue of the series from writer Jeff Lindsay will finally be released this July. The comic book won't be based on the hit Showtime series which stars Michael C. Hall as the titular serial killer, instead taking inspiration from Lindsay's novels (the first season of the show was based quite closely on Darkly Dreaming Dexter). Here are all the details... When Dexter made its debut in the Fall of 2006, audiences and critics were completely blown away. Based on the novels by Jeff Lindsay, the series followed a blood-spatter analysis expert from the Miami Metro Police Department named Dexter Morgan, brilliantly played by Michael C. Hall. The irresistible catch of course is that Dexter is also a serial killer, who only kills other killers.
The series focuses mostly on the double life that Dexter leads and the conflict that comes from that. For several years, Dexter was appointment television, and you tuned in every week to see what was going to happen because the suspense, drama, humor, and horror blended seamlessly into a gratifying television experience. However, as Dexter has just finished its seventh season, the series is starting to show its age. All of the warning signs of a television show that has gone past its expiration are not only present,...

Did a real-life vigilate serial killer inspire the Dexter Morgan character on Showtime's hit serial killer thriller "Dexter"?
AskMen.com is exploring a theory that ex-Miami cop Manuel Pardo, who was convicted on nine counts of murder and put to death by the state of Florida last week, could have been the basis for the protagonist of Jeff Lindsay's "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" novels that grew into Showtime's "Dexter."
There are some vague similarities between Pardo and Michael C. Hall's serial-killer-of-serial-killers. Pardo was a Miami police officer; Dexter is a forensic blood spatter analyst who works for the Miami Metro police department.
Pardo went on a three-week robbery and murder spree in 1986, killing six men and three women. He targeted drug-dealers, and in his final letter before his execution, called himself "a soldier" who was in a "war was against men who were trafficing (sic) in narcotics and no one else!

Season seven of Dexter comes to a close this weekend, and I am anxious and excited for it. I am way too obsessed with this show, but luckily there is someone who doesn’t mind - or was at least polite enough not to tease me about it: writer Scott Reynolds. Reynolds has been on Dexter since season one and is a self-proclaimed fanboy. We talked at length about the evolution of the series, with special attention paid to the insane developments of the last season and a half.
It has been seven years in the making, but Deb finally knows Dexter’s secret. How did you guys tackle that? It’s such a delicate thing.
Well, in the books - I think at the end of the first book - Deb finds out. Then in the books they are working together - well, not really working together, but she...

Jeff Lindsay, the author of the Dexternovels, has a fluidity in his writing that makes reading his novels about a do-gooder serial killer such an easy and enjoyable read. Add the fact that the Showtime adaptation of the dark adventures of Dexter Morgan have certainly elevated Lindsay’s character to popularity, why not explore different mediums. But are comics a good choice? Marvel seems to think so as they have picked up a 5 issue series by teaming up Lindsay’s words with artist Dalibor Talajic (Deadpool).
