Euro Beat: Jean-Luc Godard Experiments with 3-D, Plus Mike Leigh's Dream Film Gets Closer to Reality
Several big announcements concerning giants of European Cinema broke over the last week, including one bio-pic about a giant of European Art. Let's get to it! We've already reported the news that Werner Herzog is apparently set to direct an adaptation of D.B.C. Pierre's novel, Vernon God Little, The book earned a lot of comparisons to Catcher in the Rye and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, so Herzog won't exactly be in familiar territory, maybe that in itself is more normal for him these days. What is still unclear is exactly how this new affects Herzog's previously announced upcoming projects including his Helmut Newton documentary and his Gertrud Bell biopic with Naomi Watts. Meanwhile, Jean-Luc Godard is experimenting with 3-D for his follow up to...

Even though we'll be seeing noted director Werner Herzog in front of the camera later this year as the villain in Jack Reacher, that doesn't mean he'll be staying away from behind the camera. Case in point: Herzog has just signed on to direct an adaptation of D.B.C. Pierre's novel Vernon God Little, "a coming-of-age story set in Texas about a teenager caught up in the aftermath of a high-school shooting committed by his best friend." That description may sound like heavy material, but the book is also described as a satirical look at violence, materialism, and American media. Andrew Birkin, whose credits include Perfume and Name of the Rose, has written the screenplay. Here's a full plot description of the book: When sixteen kids are shot on high school grounds, everyone looks for someone to blame. Meet Vernon Little, under arrest at the sheriff’s office, a teenager...

Though he is playing the villain opposite Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher later this year, Werner Herzog is heading back behind the camera very soon. Variety reports that the multi-hyphenate's next project will be directing Vernon God Little, a satire based on D.B.C. Pierre's novel of the same name. After a high school shooting in which sixteen people are killed, a boy named Vernon Little—whose best friend was the shooter, but turned the gun on himself after the deed—is blamed for the crime. With the press out for blood, he bails to Mexico in what Amazon calls "a riotously funny look at violence, materialism, and the American media." This sounds like a perfect fit for German filmmaker Werner Herzog, who certainly isn't afraid to take on provocative material. Considering his recent output as a director, specifically Into the Abyss and On Death Row (both of which involved explorations of injustice,...

1.) The most interesting trade news as of late is word Warner Bros. has acquired the Mickey Spillane series of mystery novels featuring private investigator Mike Hammer. I personally have only seen one previous Hammer adaptation, that being Robert Aldrich's Kiss Me Deadly, which I really enjoyed and even started my Criterion review saying, "If 75% of movies were like Robert Aldrich's Kiss Me Deadly I could watch one a day and never get bored." Of course, that is the big wonder, how much will WB's adaptations be like Aldrich's film? A noir crime thriller as fun as it is hard-nosed and serious. Apparently the hope is to build a new action franchise surrounding the Hammer character, which is said to have inspired Ian Fleming's James Bond as well as Lee Child's Jack Reacher, Stacy Keach starred in a late '90s television series as Hammer and he's...
