Fxx's Archer series has ended after 14 seasons. Executive producers Casey Willis and Matt Thompson recently spoke about the challenges of bringing the animated comedy series to a close and the possibility of viewers seeing the characters return.
Starring H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Judy Greer, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash, Adam Reed, Lucky Yates, and Natalie Dew, Archer follows bumbling secret agent Sterling Archer (Benjamin) and his dysfunctional colleagues at the International Secret Intelligence Service.

This interview does not contain major spoilers for Archer: Into the Cold but does tease certain moments.
It’s not the norm for an animated series to last for 14 seasons and nearly 150 episodes, and yet Archer has gone out with gumption, grace, and gravitas. The animated spy satire has gone through many facelifts over the years — including several “coma seasons” that transformed the espionage series into a film noir, adventure serial, and space opera — only to return to spy antics with greater confidence than ever. It may feel like Archer has done everything at this point, but the show is finally ready for its biggest challenge yet: an ending.

Adam Reed was searching for inspiration. He’d just sold his stake in the production company he co-founded, 70/30 Productions — responsible for his animated series Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo — and fled to Europe, to embark on what he calls a “pilgrimage.” One day during his expedition, he was idling at a café in Salamanca, Spain, and observed a group of stunning women. He wondered who could possibly have the courage to approach them. And then, all of a sudden, a suave fellow sat down at the table, ordered a...

The animated half-hour comedy follows Sterling Archer as he navigates the changing landscape of the spy world. In season 14, Archer and The Agency found their own way with Lana at the helm. Jon Benjamin as the world’s greatest spy, “Sterling Archer;” Aisha Tyler as the spy with marital troubles, “Lana Kane;” Judy Greer as the crazy office assistant in search of a special skill, “Cheryl/Carol Tunt;” Chris Parnell as the reliable company-man, “Cyril Figgis;” Amber Nash as the enthusiastic offender,...

There is a new way for fans of Archer who have Spectrum cable but not Hulu to watch the Fxx animated series’ 14th and final season. The Emmy-winning comedy has expanded the availability of its current 14th season by making episodes available post-premiere on VOD systems for the FX and Fxx linear channels.
The issue arose after the new agreement between Disney and Spectrum parent Charter, which came together after 10 days of interrupted carriage, included the drop of eight Disney ad-supported cable networks, including Fxx and Fxm, from Spectrum platforms. As Deadline reported last week, FX brass were looking for solutions on Archer, which was seriously impacted as its final season had just premiered when the Disney networks went dark on Spectrum systems on Aug. 31.

FX’s long-running animated series “Archer” is finally coming to an end. The network announced on Monday that Season 14 of the show, which premieres on August 30 on Fxx and streams the next day on Hulu, will be its last.
No additional information about the show’s conclusion was given.
Created by Adam Reed, “Archer” premiered in 2009 as a riff on the James Bond archetype with H. Jon Benjamin’s suave but dumb Sterling Archer running various missions as part of his mother’s wildly dysfunctional intelligence agency.
After the first four seasons, the show started reinventing itself with themed seasons starting with Season 5’s “Archer Vice,” complete with 1980s aesthetics. Other seasons saw the crew on the run, in a full-on noir and in outer space. There was seemingly no end to where “Archer” could go.

For more than 12 years, Fxx's hit spy comedy "Archer" has proven its ability to constantly reinvent itself. Since the show's fifth season, seasons of the show have taken on distinctive themes, with Sterling Archer and the rest of the show's irreverent secret agents having done everything from spending a season selling cocaine in a "Miami Vice"-inspired setting to spending multiple seasons in alternate timelines taking place entirely within the mind of the comatose Archer. Through all of these extremely different settings, the show's madcap comedic bite has remained sharp, using its constantly shifting landscape to stay funny and fresh throughout its run.
"Archer" also needed to evolve behind-the-scenes, with series creator and longtime showrunner Adam Reed departing the show for good after the tenth season. A showrunner's exit can sometimes spell doom for a series, but "Archer" managed to retain a writing staff strong enough to maintain the show's quality.

It’s an extremely rare feat when a television series, animated or otherwise, is able to produce thirteen seasons of storytelling. Archer‘s journey has been anything but conventional and the silly spy comedy has experienced enough genre makeovers and stylistic experiments that a return to its espionage roots has been oddly fulfilling. Season 13 comes in after a few seasons of normalcy, yet Archer’s most recent years have provoked more change than ever before in its cast. Sterling has struggled to figure out where he belongs in a world that’s been able to move on without him, but now even the creature comforts that he’s previously taken for granted, like his mother Malory, are gone.

Management changes are always a challenge, even in an animated spy comedy. Archer and his colleagues have different reactions to former competitor Fabian Kingsworth (Kayvan Novak) purchasing their HQ. “Archer definitely shrugs off Fabian as the new boss, but the others are in self-preservation mode,” Archer executive producer Casey Willis says. In the first of eight episodes, Fabian brings in the “Gamemaster” (Shohreh Aghdashloo) to pit Archer and Lana (Aisha Tyler) against each other. “The worst aspects of their personalities bubble up to the surface,” Willis teases. “Lana finally lets loose and goes day drinking!” Archer, Season 13 Premiere, Wednesday, August 24, 10/9c, Fxx...

After the shock of Jessica Walter‘s death last year, “Archer” showrunner Casey Willis found himself having to find a way to address it in the show, even though she had recorded her lines for the season. “I think we had an idea of her retiring and then soon, we were like, we should put Ron in there as well and see the two of them happy and doing what they want,” he tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). Having Walter paired with her late husband Ron Leibman, made several of the others writers become emotional as well. “When I described it to a couple of people, they started to cry just over the phone when I was describing it, so I was like, okay, I think this going to be the right thing.”

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia recently finished its 15th season and Archer is going into its 13th season.
However, neither show is heading toward the end of its line, according to FX Entertainment President Eric Schrier.
Sunny, which with its latest season beat the record for longest running live-action comedy, bypassing The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, was renewed for multiple seasons in December 2020, taking it through to its 18th season.

“It’s interesting with that show,” Schrier told Deadline. “The guys have been doing it for so long. The fans love the show, so we’ll keep going as long as as they want to keep it going.

The sun has set on the twelfth season of Fxx’s stalwart animated spy comedy, “Archer,” and while the series has already been renewed, Season 13 will get the gang back together save for one pivotal character: Malory Archer.
Voiced by Jessica Walter, whose March 24 death broke the internet’s collective heart, questions began swirling immediately, wondering how the series would handle the loss of the beloved performer. Would another actress step into the role? Would Malory meet an untimely end?
Those questions were finally answered this week with the release of the Season 12 finale, “Mission: Difficult.” In the episode itself, Malory is largely absent, as Sterling Archer battled his kidnappers with a little help from his colleagues. When Malory does appear, it’s (uncharacteristically) as a woman of few words — saving her son, before disappearing into the chaos. The Agency triumphs in the end, save for a last-minute reveal in...

Archer’s 12th season came to a close tonight with an emotional finale, in which Fxx’s animated series said goodbye to one of its main characters, Malory Archer, voiced by Jessica Walter. The finale paid a loving tribute to the Emmy-winning actress who died on March 24 at the age of 80.
As Deadline reported in March, Walter had done the bulk of her voice work for the season before her death. Malory has a brief appearance in the finale, swooping in to save her son Sterling from his kidnappers. While she and her team win, her agency is acquired by Iia and Malory disappears, leaving behind a letter for Sterling.

Archer will continue its long-running stretch.
Fxx has renewed the animated comedy for a 13th season. The Disney-owned network will launch the eight-episode run in 2022, and like its current 12th season will premiere on Fxx and be available to stream the next day on FX on Hulu.
It comes as the 12th season – the show’s last featuring the voice talent of the late Jessica Walter as Archer’s mother and spymaster Malory Archer – continues on the network.
FX Networks chairman John Landgraf told Deadline earlier this summer that he was “optimistic” that the show would return.
The series follows Sterling Archer as he navigates the changing landscape of the spy world.

This article contains spoilers for Archer season 12 episode 5.
Archer has a fascinating relationship with change. Major elements like the show’s genre have transformed, but a constant through the years are the characters and their relationships with one another. The series has made it clear that these character dynamics are quite toxic in many ways, some of which have left the characters looking for ways to grow. The most recent seasons have prioritized the cause and effect nature of Archer waking up from his coma and returning to work, which has left everyone feeling very raw and vulnerable, including Sterling Archer himself.
Archer’s latest episode, “Shots,” dresses itself up as a playful night of liquor and laughs, but it becomes a deep look into Archer’s poisonous effect on his friends, specifically Cyril. This article contains spoilers for Archer season 12 episode 1.
After eleven seasons, over 100 episodes, and four radical reinventions, Archer has become one of the most ambitious and respected animated series of its generation. The show has elevated itself to something greater than a (hilarious) parody of the spy genre and has slowly allowed both itself and its characters to evolve in fascinating ways. Around these massive changes, Archer has never lost sight of itself. Its core sensibility and acerbic characters never falter.
Twelve seasons in, Archer has returned to a relative place of normalcy. Season 11 brought Sterling Archer back to reality from his coma, but season 12 is where the harsh ways of the world really begin to set back in. Archer himself may have his groove back, but his team is still in a highly unstable place and this season presents a version of them that are more vulnerable than ever before.

Legendary actress Jessica Walter may have passed away back in March, but her chances of getting nominated for a posthumous Emmy Award are still very much alive. With the recent release of this year’s Emmy nomination ballots, we found out that Walter is being submitted in the Best Character Voice-Over Performance category for voicing the toxic matriarch, Mallory Archer, on the Emmy-winning Fxx series “Archer.”
Seetv animation panel: ‘Archer,’ ‘Big Mouth,’ ‘Bob’s Burgers,’ ‘The Great North,’ ‘Harley Quinn,’ ‘Solar Opposites’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Walter is on the ballot for her work in the season 11 episode, “The Double Date.” Mallory first appears several minutes into the episode when she shows up at a restaurant where Sterling (H. Jon Benjamin) is supposed to be following an elusive Russian hacker. Mallory is shocked to see that Sterling has brought a date to the mission in order to make his ex, Lana (Aisha Tyler), jealous since...

In Season 11 “Archer,” Fxx’s Emmy-winning, adult animated sitcom, returned to the world of spies after a genre-hopping, delirious, three-year coma. But, of course, Sterling Archer’s (H. Jon Benjamin) return to consciousness was a shock to his overblown ego. He was suddenly like a fish out of water — out of sync, out of shape, and even more clueless — trying to cope with the fact that his dysfunctional colleagues were more efficient without him.
At the same time, the Atlanta-based Floyd County Productions had to make some adjustments as well. Creator Adam Reed stepped further into the background after providing the premise to pursue other projects, which gave more creative control to executive producers Casey Willis and Matt Thompson, who also directed the Sony/Netflix animated feature, “America: The Motion Picture,” produced by “Spider-Verse’s” Phil Lord and Chris Miller. They consequently divided the scripts among five writers. “Adam and...

When speaking with several of the most prominent names in television animation, it’s extremely interesting to hear how they became a part of animated programming. Gold Derby recently got to put this question, and others, to Casey Willis (“Archer”), Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett (“Big Mouth”), Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (“Bob’s Burgers” and “The Great North”), Patrick Schumacker (“Harley Quinn”) and Mike McMahan (“Solar Opposites”) during our recent “Meet the Experts” panel. Watch the lively group panel above with these seven creative geniuses. Click on each person’s name above to be taken to their individual interview.
For McMahan, he remembers getting into “Ren & Stimpy” as an alternative to going to church on Sundays and “Futurama” because of his love for science fiction, but never thought he would be able to be a part of that field. “I can’t draw, so I never thought that I would...

When Casey Willis, the current showrunner for Fxx’s animated hit, “Archer,” remembers the late, great Jessica Walter, he notes that it was Walter’s participation that got other people to sign on to the project. “If it wasn’t for Jessica Walter signing on to do the show, it might never have happened. Once she was attached everybody was like, oh yeah, we’re definitely going to be in this show,” he shared with Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: Television Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). But Willis also remembers how Walter, who voiced Mallory Archer, the manipulative matriarch, would play innocent as she asked what some of the more risqué jokes meant. “It was so challenging to have to explain to this sweet woman what teabagging is or something like that. Then she would just come back with the zinger later on because she...

This article contains spoilers for Archer season 11 episode 8.
It’s definitely been a very memorable season for Archer. The show’s 11th year has successfully pulled Sterling Archer out of his multi-season coma and forced both him and his inner-circle to adjust to the many changes that they’ve faced. This season has featured Archer at his most alone and miserable, but it’s also highlighted a newly repentant side of the character. Against all odds, Archer has actually been able to exhibit personal growth, demonstrate newfound maturity, and even think about people other than himself. He also has a kick-ass new cane.
“Cold Fusion,” the season finale, features a massive story that feels fitting as the conclusion to this satisfying run of episodes. As much as this new season has been about Archer returning to a new normal, “Cold Fusion” once again attempts to reestablish the status quo in...

Archer is back in the real world after spending its previous three seasons in a coma and the animated spy’s recovery is set to extend for a 12th season.
Fxx has renewed the show for another run in 2021. The 11th season launched on September 16 and the cable network said ratings for total viewers were up 32% from the previous season with 2.43M total viewers per episode across linear and digital.
The half-hour comedy follows Sterling Archer, who this season is out of his coma, having spent the last three seasons in 1940s noir Los Angeles, 1938 South Pacific and outer space.
While many things changed during his absence, Archer is confident it will take just a little time for him to reset things back to the old ways. The problem: does the rest of the team want that?

The following contains spoilers for Archer season 11 episode 4.
Archer season 11 has been a strong return to form and has, in many ways, reinvigorated the series. This new season largely revolves around the changes that have happened during Archer’s coma absence and whether he’s able to persevere through these transitions. Previous episodes have all examined how Archer’s return has effected those that are closest to him, but the season’s newest installment, “Robot Factory,” explores this from the perspective of Archer’s greatest rival, the robotic Barry.
“Robot Factory” might be the most satisfying episode of the season yet. It doesn’t just dig into Archer’s emotional evolution, but also threatens the world with a robot apocalypse and dozens of deadly threats that need to be extinguished. Yet somehow, maniacal metal menaces can still feel like business as usual for Archer. Casey Willis, Archer’s executive producer,...

Any television show that has been on for 11 seasons is bound to change. Archer has gone through so many metamorphoses that it’s surprising that Franz Kafka isn’t in the writers’ room. The most recent seasons of Archer have attempted to reinvigorate the show’s formula through genre pastiches like a film noir or sci-fi space adventure. All of this has been justified by the lengthy coma that Archer has now been in for several years. The series’ efforts to distance itself from generic spy missions has been a curious experiment, but Archer season 11 brings with it the biggest changes of all by returning back to the basics.
Archer finally returns to its “prime timeline” as Archer wakes up from his coma and experiences a very rude awakening to how the world, and those closest to him, have moved on in his absence. The season premiere, “The Orpheus Gambit,...

“Archer,” the Emmy-winning comedy series, is returning to Fxx. The 11th season will premiere two back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 10 p.m. Pt/Et.
“Archer” is an animated, half-hour comedy that follows eight dysfunctional spies of the International Secret Intelligence Service (Isis), a fictional New York-based intelligence agency. The team is led by Sterling Archer, voiced by H. Jon Benjamin, who returns to the scene after a three-year coma. Previous seasons have reimagined the core cast as stock characters from a noir film, following the team’s mission in a remote South Pacific island in 1939 and in a retro-futuristic outer space.
“Archer” was conceived by creator Adam Reed following the cancellation of his Adult Swim series “Frisky Dingo.” The dark comedy draws inspiration from the James Bond franchise, referencing heavy humor and meta-comedy. There have been 110 episodes broadcast in the show’s history.

“Archer” Season 11 is set. After delaying its original May 2020 release date, FX has announced a new premiere date for the latest season of its long-running animated sitcom. Archer & Co. will return Wednesday, September 16 to Fxx, with episodes available the next day via FX on Hulu.
Two episodes will air back-to-back on September 16, as Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) returns to his old digs and former gig — spying. At the end of Season 10, the hard-drinking, not-so-secret agent woke from a three-year coma, and Season 11 will not only reveal what he (and viewers) missed, but see Archer entering a changed world as a changed man.
The trailer and release date were announced at the end of the show’s 2020 Comic-Con panel. Held virtually with discussions available for free via YouTube (watch the full “Archer” panel here), this year’s edition is formally titled Comic-Con@Home and the “Archer” panel featured executive...

When working in animation, if not television in general, producers get used to dealing with problems. Script changes, talent availability, technical issues — no matter what it is, it’s always something.
But today’s recurring surprises stem from novel circumstances, and for the ever-hilarious “Archer” team, such unprecedented challenges call for unprecedented jokes. “Every other day, some sort of giant problem crops up because of working from home and coronavirus and whatever,” executive producer Casey Willis said. “So we have a [running] joke: ‘What’s that? Oh, now bears are attacking us? Well, I guess we’ve got to figure out bears now.'”
Willis, executive producer Matt Thompson, and many more artisans are still hard at work to complete “Archer” Season 11. The latest from FX’s Emmy-winning team was scheduled to debut in May, before the pandemic delayed (or shut down) a majority of ongoing productions.
