Luther fans, rejoice! Idris Elba’s gruff detective will don that signature tweed coat once again for an “utterly heart-stopping and unmissable” four-part season, filming on which will kick off next month.
That’s right, Luther season 5 will head into production in January and it’ll herald John Luther’s first small-screen appearance since December of 2015. Granted, Elba has since reprised as the iconic sleuth, specifically for a Sport Relief sketch, but with the show’s co-creator and writer Neil Cross also on board, fans will no doubt be looking to this all-new fifth installment with bated breath.
“I delivered the final episode of Luther series five about an hour before leaving for the airport [to head to London for the Hard Sun premiere],” said Cross in a recent interview. “We’re in prep right now and we’re doing a bit of casting and we start shooting in January. For some reason, I always seem to shoot in the depths of winter.

Filming is due to commence sometime next year, which would put Luther‘s fifth season on course for a late 2018 premiere. Whatever the case (see what we did there?), Elba’s husky-voiced detective was last seen tackling crime opposite DS Emma Lane (Rose Leslie), and with no mention of casting at this early, early stage,...

Idris Elba and Luther's impressive cast continue to be its trump card, proving that the series 4 resurrection was well worth it...
This review contains spoilers.
Eighteen months have passed since the BBC aired the last episode of Luther.
That finale was a thrill ride that seemed to tie up many of the series' loose ends and gave a fittingly bittersweet ending for Idris Elba's mercurial detective. There have been rumours of a movie but the series looked done and dusted for a long time. Yet here we are, Christmas 2015, and it's back.
The episode opens with scenes reminiscent of the third season. The premise is simple enough — a woman waits for her husband to come to their new home from work and she hears noises and creaks around the house. The influences from horror cinema are as evident here as they have been in previous series.

Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed sleuth isn’t the only one getting a one-off special this holiday season – Benedict Cumberbatch returns for Sherlock: The Abominable Bride on New Year’s Day – now that BBC America has formally confirmed that a three-hour Luther special will air on Thursday, December 17 at 9 pm Et.
Regardless of the state of Fox’s languishing American remake, Idris Elba will don the trench coat and return to the role that bagged him a Golden Globe and critical adulation. This time around, the case involves an out-of-control serial cannibal killer, who sends London’s finest on high alert after a string of dead bodies begin to surface.
Bucking the traditional content rollout of one episode per week, the BBC has opted to lump all episodes together for the American audience, which ought to sate the palette of the binge viewer in all of us.

"Luther" is ready to prowl the streets of London again this winter.
BBC America announced that the British police drama starring Idris Elba is returning for a one-night, three-hour movie event on December 17.

- BBC America (@Bbcamerica) November 5, 2015 "Luther" has aired three seasons in both the U.K. and U.S. to much critical acclaim, and was renewed for a fourth series. Filming on that took place earlier this year, but it seems BBC America will package it as a three-hour movie, instead. Perhaps the network is trying to appeal to binge-watchers.
Elba, of course, returns as the titular detective, with former "Game of Thrones" actress Rose Leslie joining the cast. Here's the official synopsis:
