The 2017 Tribeca Film Festival has come and gone, but several of its highlights face an uncertain future. While the festival opened with an iTunes-ready documentary about Clive Davis and closed with back-to-back screenings of the first two “Godfather” films, many of the films in its competition sections arrived at the festival without distribution deals and ended it in the same state. Here’s at a few significant titles from this year’s edition that deserve to get picked up.

There’s good reason for “Blame” to feel lived-in and authentic: Writer, director and star Quinn Shephard is only 22 years old, making her just a few years removed from the film’s high-school environs. Given the nature of her Arthur Miller-inflected debut, one hopes she had an easier go of it than her character does.
Said heroine is Abigail, and if you’ve read “The Crucible” you might know why. Recently discharged from a mental institution, the troubled teen is now tasked with resuming her studies among a clique of mean girls who write harassing messages on her locker and generally do their utmost to make life miserable. Melissa (Nadia Alexander) serves as ringleader, though Shephard makes plain that Melissa’s habit of spreading misery to others is borne of her own pain. Filmmaker Quinn Shephard didn’t go to film school — instead, she made her own. The New Jersey native was just 15 when she came up with the idea for what would become her feature directorial debut “Blame,” a modern high school-set take on Arthur Miller’s classic play “The Crucible.” Seven years later, Shephard is at the Tribeca Film Festival with the film, one that she not only stars in, but also wrote, directed, edited and produced. At 21, she’s reached a benchmark that usually filmmakers a few more years of work.
The film follows Shephard as high school outcast Abigail Grey, who returns to high school after a mysterious incident the year before, only to form a taboo bond with her new drama teacher (Chris Messina). As their relationship blossoms in very unexpected ways, Abigail’s nemesis Melissa (Nadia Alexander) observes from afar, continually threatening to bust the entire situation wide open (a witch hunt?...

When you’re setting your New England ghost story against the backdrop of a Salem Witch Trial past, it’s quite the coup to secure a locale as famous as the Noyes-Parris House built in 1669. Now owned by author Glenn Cooper (who serves as executive producer), its historical resonance as the home of Reverend Samuel Parris is felt. It was his daughter Betty and niece Abigail Williams who made the first accusations to begin the tragic true-life events that unfolded. It should be no surprise then that Michael and Shawn Rasmussen would decide to let the spectral ghouls of their film The Inhabitants be children led by the spirit of a woman hung for witchcraft (India Pearl‘s Lydia) after a flu epidemic hit the community’s youth centuries earlier.
The Noyes-Parris House is transformed into the fictional March Carriage House—a quaint little bed and breakfast with a well-documented and haunted past.

The Liars have done some truly unforgivable things to one another. Yet, somehow, the one grudge everyone is able to hold is the one against Hanna, who made a completely understandable slip — while drunk! — that wouldn’t have even been an issue if Ali hadn’t double-crossed her rescuers and insisted on perpetuating a very complicated and pointless lie about a kidnapping that never happened. Good thing I don’t write the Pretty Little Logic Rankings.1. Ali (last week: 10)I could almost handle it when this little Abigail Williams wannabe toyed with every cop and Liar (and lying cop) in Rosewood. Almost. But to turn a fake A loose in the sacred ground of Ashley Marin’s kitchen? To reenlist Noel Kahn, which is probably going to require me to keep track of who Noel is and why he’s important? To use an overused phrase: I can’t even.

A very earthy and spookily atmospheric production suffers from some dated attitudes: not those of the 1690s but the 1950s. I’m “biast” (pro): love Richard Armitage
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
On Saturday night I attended a performance of a new production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible at London’s legendary Old Vic theatre (where Kevin Spacey is currently the artistic director). I’d never seen the play before, nor had I read it — I knew about it only generally, as Miller’s allegorical take on McCarthyism, written during its height, via a semifictionalized account of the Salem witch trials of the late 17th century. Frankly, I was interested mostly because Richard Armitage is starring, and I wanted to see if he is as mesmerizing onstage as he is onscreen.

What’s not to love about a duel? Stand 10 paces apart from a man who’s insulted your honor. Flip a coin to see who fires first. Aim. Shoot. Kill or die. In 1804, the sitting vice-president of the United States, Aaron Burr, killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel in Weehawken, N.J. American history was forever changed. In Sunday’s episode of Turn, Abraham Woodhull found himself staring down the barrel of a Captain Simcoe’s pistol after the ruthless British soldier returned to Setauket with his eyes set on Anna Strong. Abe had been led to believe that Simcoe...

Since 2007′s Nocturnal, metal media darlings The Black Dahlia Murder have steadily dropped any premise of ‘core from their sound and deftly shifted their sound into leaner (physically and sonically!), meaner, blacker pastures with positive results. Other than the slight stumble of 2009s Deflorate, the band has readily added a more slicing, deadlier presence and tone, culminating in 2011s Ritual, arguably the band’s most complete, ripping effort.
But here we are with album number 6, Everblack, adorned with the same sort of foreboding black/death metal cover as Nocturnal (courtesy of Nick Keller), and an album that again raises the bar for the band, now making them easily on of the Us scene’s most consistent bands, despite the hosts of naysayers among the grumpier, old school, ‘true’ metal community.
Now don’t get me wrong, I am far from a The Black Dahlia Murder fan boy, as I have...

If there's one thing that I can tell you about New York City after living in Brooklyn for thirty years, it's that the Big Apple can be one hell of a scary place. The good news? It just got a little bit scarier. Read on for details.
According to Deadline, Chloe Sevigny will play Abigail Williams in Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's new play Abigail/1702, which will premiere at New York Stage and Film this summer. The David Esbjornson-directed production will run June 27-July 8.
The play is a supernatural suspense thriller set 10 years after the infamous Salem witch trials. Believing herself responsible for the deaths of 20 innocent people, Abigail is now living in Boston under an assumed name, caring for the sick, and struggling to atone for her sins — both the ones history remembers her for and the darker ones in her heart. When she starts to fall in love with a young sailor in her care,...

When she starts to fall in love with a young sailor in her care, a chilling, diabolical figure from Abigail’s past comes calling…and demands her soul as recompense for her crimes, sending the woman on one final, terror-filled quest for redemption back into the dark, haunted woods of Salem. Scream 4
It’s been 10 years since a serial killer has reeked havoc on lip-quivering heroine Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell), and now Ghost Face has returned to up the ante, cashing in and criticizing the latest in horror conventions. Wes Craven directs.
Take the fear home with a trio of terrifying tales:
The Last House on the Left (1972) Before Craven was serving up self-aware cinema, he was crafting some of the most deeply disturbing entries in the horror genre.

Salem, Massachusetts - The town's name lives in infamy, many say deservedly so, for hysteria and bloodshed brought about by intolerance and greed. From out of the mouths of many who died, it can be assumed that curses flew, damning their persecutors to the coldest flames of hell with one breath and declaring their innocence in the next.
Here, only the bravest of men wear a badge, not because of crime, but due to mortality from, some say, a different source. And even in death, among the many who died unjustly, there is at least one who watches and takes satisfaction in tragedy.
It's safe to say that we Americans have, over our long and storied history, done some pretty stupid things to our fellow humans. From displacing the entire Native American nation to slavery, our culture was one of subjugating those different from ourselves with extreme prejudice. One such chapter,...
