Sung Kang, who is best known for playing the fan favorite role of Han in the Fast and Furious franchise, has made his feature directorial debut with the ’90s-set creature feature Shaky Shivers, which landed a North American distribution deal with Cinedigm. They teamed up with Fathom Events to bring the movie to theatres for one night last month, and now it has been announced (via our friends at Bloody Disgusting) that Shaky Shivers will be receiving a digital release on October 17th. The digital version can be pre-ordered on Amazon. The movie will also be streaming on the Screambox service.
Shot over the course of five weeks at a closed down girl scout camp back in 2020, Shaky Shivers takes viewers on a hilarious and nostalgic journey to an abandoned camp where two young women, played by Brooke Markham (In the Dark) and VyVy Nguyen (The Sympathizer), stumble upon a book of magical spells.

Plot: Fearing a witch’s curse is going to make her turn into a werewolf, Lucy heads to an abandoned camp with her friend Karen to wait out the full moon. But lycanthropy may be the least of their problems.
Review: The horror comedy Shaky Shivers takes its title from a cold, sweet concoction created by ice cream shop worker Karen (VyVy Nguyen), but we never actually learn what ingredients she has put into this treat. The movie itself is quite a blend of sub-genres, featuring lycanthropy, zombies, a witch, cultists, a Trapper Keeper Necronomicon, a Bigfoot enthusiast… and maybe even an appearance by Bigfoot itself.
Karen works at the aforementioned ice cream shop with her pal Lucy (Brooke Markham), and when a witchy woodsy woman called Mama Nature (played by Erin Daniels of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses) comes in after closing time, wielding an odd puppet and asking for food,...

"What if you had sex with a wolf?" Cineverse + Fathom Events are hosting a one-night-only special event screening of this indie horror film on September 21st – this week. Shaky Shivers is the feature directorial debut of Korean-American actor Sung Kang – best known for playing Han in the Fast & Furious movies (with a recent appearance in Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series). Two young women find themselves at an abandoned camp in the woods with a book of magical spells surrounded by classic monsters in this comedic send up of 1980s horror films. It's another new werewolf film to enjoy this spooky season, paying homage to the many horror classics from the 80s. Starring Brooke Markham, VyVy Nguyen, Jimmy Bellinger, Herschel Sparber, Skyler Day, & Erin Daniels. Looks like an amusing buddy comedy mashed up with every funky 80s horror idea they could think of. Might be fun? Or might be dumb.

Sung Kang ditches the fast and furious lifestyle for his directorial debut Shaky Shivers — a delightful gateway horror treat that recalls the Goosebumps television show or Are You Afraid of the Dark. Its Young Adult vibes bring two girls face to face with werewolf curses, zombification, and friendly ice cream parlor wholesomeness. Some might see the "gateway" description and wince, but that's not meant as a zinger — Shaky Shivers is filled with giggles and quirky horror introductions that make the genre accessible to all audiences. There's something Nickelodeon After Midnight about it all, as Kang turns a low-budget buddy comedy with teeth into a sweet tale about friendship, brainfreeze, and choosing our destinies over giving up to lesser fates.

Essentially a girls’ version of Porky’s meets American Pie, Universal’s latest entry in the raunchy-comedy sweepstakes is an R-rated answer to all those endless horny-teenage-boy movies where the whole goal is to see who can lose their virginity first. In the case of Blockers, three teen girls make a #sexpact to do just that on their prom night, picking three unsuspecting boys to do the deed and free them from all the peer pressure.
As I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), the difference here is a good amount of heart thrown into the sexual stew, likely due to the presence of a female director, Kay Cannon, making her behind-the-camera debut after writing the Pitch Perfect films among others. To be sure the script is credited to men, Brian Kehoe and Jim Kehoe, and the film comes from producing partners Seth Rogen and...

It's a sex farce about three high school girls who make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night – until their parents decide to cock-block them, that is. On paper, Blockers sounds bloody awful, like the spawn of Mean Girls and Superbad that nobody wanted. "Well, bite me!" as the teen stars of this a laugh-a-minute party would say. Cheers to debuting director Kay Cannon – a producer-writer on 30 Rock and a screenwriter on the Pitch Perfect comedies – for giving a witty femcentric spin to the script by Brian...

From Porky’s to American Pie to Superbad, mainstream comedies about teenagers trying to lose their virginities have almost always unfolded from a male perspective. Blockers takes the extremely refreshing step of presenting that familiar story from a female point of view and the results are very funny indeed.
Directed by Kay Cannon (the screenwriter of the Pitch Perfect movies, making her feature debut), Blockers centres on three teenage girls – Julie (Kathryn Newton), Kayla (Geraldine Viswanathan) and Sam (Gideon Adlon) – who have been friends since their first day at school. On prom night, the three make a sex pact to lose their virginity: Julie to her steady boyfriend Austin (Graham Phillips), Kayla to her laid-back lab partner Connor (Miles Robbins) and Sam to her dorky prom date...

You’ve all seen *that* Blockers TV spot where thick-thighed John Cena “butt chugs” against high schoolers, right? “I mean, looks dumb.” Hardly. Get ready to read about the proficient gender-swapped comedy that is Blockers – an infinitely more rewarding watch that doesn’t fit into a thirty-second ad.
While raunchy “parents gone wild” humor will surely tickle immature and crass tastes, Kay Cannon’s first of many directorial features is a uniquely female buddy-sex-comedy that’s infinitely richer as far as representational awakenings are concerned. For better and worse, the film’s trio of prom-night besties live a categorical night of debauchery more often reserved for male audiences (like, 99% of the time). It’s unfiltered, messy and vocally identifiable for females who’ve long watched comparable cinematic archetypes be used by machismo dude-bros as ditzy intercourse props or background love interests. No more.

Blockers doesn’t pull off the impossible so much as it turns the tables on a common formula, finding something fresh, empowering, and hilarious in that time-old story of a group of friends making a pact to lose their V-card on prom night. Directed by Kay Cannon, there are a few more real-world complications for our leads, including Lisa (Leslie Mann), a single mother with an unhealthy obsession with her daughter; Mitchell (John Cena), a buff yet sensitive dad in a committed marriage; and Hunter (Ike Barinholtz), a party boy with surprising depth. This studio comedy even finds room for a tender (yet still very funny) coming out story to overbearing parents.
The girls are given their own agency as well. Lisa’s daughter Julie (Kathryn Newton) is dating Austin (Graham Phillips), a good guy with, as we discover in the film’s funniest scenes, an open relationship with his sexually adventurous parents.

Even before it premiered to a boisterous reception at the SXSW Film Festival, “Blockers” was already famous from its red band trailer as that movie where John Cena funnels beer into his anus. That’s one of the more outrageous gags in director Kay Cannon’s inspired sex comedy, but it’s hardly the only one that hits its mark. Cannon’s directorial debut joins “Neighbors,” “Superbad” and “Old School” as an inspired party movie that merges juvenile humor with genuine observations about the gap between teen mayhem and adult responsibilities. Cannon gives equal footing to the sexual aims of its young protagonists attempting to lose their virginity on prom night and the nervous parents keen on stopping them. The difference here is that women rule the show, resulting in a woke “American Pie” for the text message age.

It’s a wonderful thing – the way horror comes in all flavors and varieties these days. Whether you’re into slashers and serial killers, ghosts and monsters, old school classics or found footage, there’s something out there that’s just right for you.
