When Bobby Cannavale turned up midway through the run of Terence Winter's HBO gangster epic Boardwalk Empire, the most surprising thing was that they somehow hadn't worked together before, whether on earlier Boardwalk seasons or during Winter's long run as David Chase's top lieutenant on The Sopranos. The half-Italian, half-Cuban actor has been no stranger to crime stories in his career (including a role on NBC's would-be Sopranos drama Kingpin), but the Boardwalk role of animalistic sociopath Gyp Rosetti (for which he would win an Emmy) was his first time working with Winter, and also with Boardwalk executive producer Martin Scorsese. Now, all three men have teamed up with, of all people, Mick Jagger, for Vinyl, HBO's new Sunday drama, where Cannavale plays Richie Finestra, a '70s record company executive with a great ear and a nose too prone to having cocaine shoved up it. The two-hour...

2016 is the year of the music-driven TV series. Cameron Crowe will go behind the scenes with "Roadies," Baz Luhrmann hits the clubs with the '70s-set "The Get Down," and also taking place in the same era and scene is Martin Scorsese's "Vinyl." It arrives on HBO next month, and as you might expect, it'll have a lot of music from the period for viewers to dive into. Volume 1 of the soundtrack is stuffed with soul, blues and rock'n roll, with tracks by Otis Redding, The Meters, Edgar Winter, Foghat, Ruth Brown, and more. It also feature original music by the critically acclaimed country singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson (who provides the show's theme song "Sugar Daddy") and The Nasty Bits, a group fronted by Mick Jagger's son James Jagger, who also appears on the show. Meanwhile, David Johansen has re-recorded some jams by New York Dolls. Beyond that, HBO...

Versatile guitarist who had a million-selling hit with Love Is Strange
Mickey Baker, who has died aged 87, was one of the most versatile and prolific guitarists of his era. During the 1950s, any producer making R&B or rock'n'roll records in New York would have Baker's name in his contacts book, and he played on innumerable sessions for Atlantic, Savoy and other labels, accompanying vocal groups including the Drifters and the Coasters and blues singers such as Champion Jack Dupree, Nappy Brown and Lavern Baker. Among the many hit records to which he made original and distinctive contributions were Ruth Brown's (Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean, the Coasters' I'm a Hog for You and Joe Turner's Shake, Rattle and Roll.
Inspired by the successful model of the guitarist Les Paul and the singer Mary Ford, he formed a duo with the singer Sylvia Vanderpool (later Sylvia Robinson...

Early 20th century French composer Nadia Boulanger once said: "A great work of art is made out of a combination of obedience and liberty." It is safe to say the first ladies of rock-n-roll were no classical composers, shoving obedience to the side as they pursued their own ways to be free in a field dominated by men. Bo Bruce, Tyler James, Vince Kidd and Leanne Mitchell have made it through to the final of 'The Voice'. The quartet were voted through by the public after their performance on Saturday (26.05.12), as only one act from each team was able to go through to the final. The result came as a shock as it saw competition favourite Ruth Brown lose out in a place in the final to Leanne, but her coach Sir Tom Jones vowed to do all he could to help her succeed as an artist. He said: ''Ruth is a great singer and she's a wonderful person and...

'The Voice' star Ruth Brown believes her father is watching her performances from heaven. The singer's father sadly passed away from stomach cancer just days before her audition for the show, but Ruth - who is mentored by Sir Tom Jones on the show - credits him with her success. She told The Sun newspaper: ''I often dream about him the night before I sing. ''I can feel his presence and that's very comforting. ''He gives me strength when I am singing and I think about him a lot when I perform.'' Ruth also told how singing on the BBC One show has helped...

Frances Wood, Joelle Moses, Adam Isaac and duo Matt Clubb and Sueleen Fletcher all left 'The Voice' last night (13.05.12). Four stars of the show were selected by coaches Sir Tom Jones and will.i.am to leave the BBC one programme, pushing Ruth Brown, Leanne Mitchell, Jaz Ellington and Tyler James on to the semi-final of the BBC show. Jaz overcame a vomiting bug to progress via the public vote, while mentor will saved Tyler. Tom struggled to choose after popular Ruth - who sang Emilie Sande's 'Next To Me' on the Saturday night show (12.05.12) - went through with the...

Will.i.am may have run into trouble for spending more time looking at this phone than at the contestants during last weekend's instalment of The Voice, but he's got plenty to say about his tweets, and why he does it...
"I like to give the fans who are responsible for me doing what I’m doing a deeper look at what’s actually happening," he told HuffPostUK on Wednesday night. "So I make an effort to keep them connected.
"When I’m getting ready to do The Voice, I'm saying, 'I’m about to go up there... I hope my team does well today... I’m really nervous for them... Oh, shucks, Jaz did a really good job, go Jaz'... team, Will'... these are things I'm talking about."

19-year-old Ruth Brown completed Sir Tom Jones's Voice UK team this evening, wowing the Welsh pop icon with her rendition of 'When Love Takes Over'. Brown revealed before her audition that she was dedicating her Blind Audition to her late father, who died before Christmas. The singer claimed that her dad had given her his approval to appear on the BBC talent show. "He wanted me to give it everything," she said. Sir Tom Jones was the only coach who turned his chair for Brown. However, Jessie J applauded the teenager for her "insane" voice and "style". Jones commented: "She's got some voice... (more)...

Sir Tom Jones secured the final two musical hopefuls for his squad on tonight's (April 14) final Blind Auditions show on The Voice UK. The living legend, who has performed with Elvis and Aretha Franklin, believes that he has the quality in his team to find the first winner of the BBC reality TV show. His final pick of the series was 19-year-old Ruth Brown, whose big vocals and passionate rendition of 'When Love Takes Over' gave Sir Tom some tingles. "Anyone with lungs like that has to be something special," said the Welsh icon. Sir Tom's other addition to his team this evening was Lindsey Butler, a 41-year-old mum-of-two, who wowed with (more)...

There have been plenty of creepy songs over the last thousand or so years. (Mozart‘s Requiem anybody? Well everybody, eventually.) We’ve decided to compile The 88 Creepiest Song Titles Of All Time. To be fair, we left out pretty much every death metal title because, frankly, they’re all pretty creepy. Click on the names of each artist to hear the selection. And feel free to weigh in on any song titles we may have left out in the comments. 88. “My Ding-a-Ling” Chuck Berry A no-brainer. It’s a song about a little boy discovering his penis, and it’s sung by a man well into his 40s. Perverted Justice’s favorite tune. 87. “Two Lovely Black Eyes” Charles Coborn What’s lovelier than a woman who was beaten in the face twice? According to Charles Coborn, nothing! 86. “With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm” Stanley Holloway A song about Anne Boleyn,...

It’s “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” Week on American Idol, which means we’ve got at least some slim hope that Wednesday night’s performance show won’t consist entirely of saccharine ballads. To that end, I’ve brainstormed my dream set list for the Top 9 — including uptempo tracks for Pia and Jacob, a tonal shift for Scotty, and something that will allow Casey to break out the upright bass. Check out my picks, then peruse an alphabetical listing of the entire Hall of Fame roster, head to the comments, and post your own song suggestions.

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Live DVD - Review
One of the things that hits you about the midway point when watching this set is that this has to be one of the greatest live “Best Of” compilations ever put to DVD. The luminaries of rock and roll that appear within this presentation is enough to make it a worthwhile purchase for yourself but certainly is something that ought to be considered a solid gift for anyone who appreciates a wide spectrum of music.

German helmer Fatih Akin's latest, "Soul Kitchen," is a lark, but an enjoyable one. The film sees the director of "Head On" and "The Edge of Heaven" doing schtick for the first time -- not as odd a transition as one might think from his previous dramas, which have in common a deeply felt human touch and sense of interconnection. In fact, Zinos (Adam Bousdoukos) wishes he were a little less connected at the start of "Soul Kitchen" -- his brother Illyas (Moritz Bleibtreu) is out on conditional probation and needs a job at his restaurant, a high school acquaintance is going after the land that restaurant sits on, the Hamburg Tax Office is looking to collect back taxes and the one person he wishes were around, his girlfriend, is headed to Shanghai for six months for work. He also has chronic back pains, which don't do him any...
