Vertical is getting ahead of the crowds as this year’s Cannes market starts wheeling and dealing for Hollywood’s hottest projects and properties. The studio acquired the U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, with Justin Kurzel in the director’s chair. Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s novel The Silent Brotherhood, The Order stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan.
Here’s a synopsis of Flynn and Gerhardt’s novel courtesy of Library Journal:
Two courageous investigative journalists have created an insider’s account of the “silent brotherhood,” the anti-Jewish, white supremacist underground that, with the justification of some perversely interpreted Christian teachings, conducts an all-out race war. The movement has gathered a group of superpatriots, zealots, malcontents, as well as, rather disturbingly, a large majority of ordinary people. These followers see the underground’s survivalist creed as the way whites can protect...

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, a dramatic thriller directed by Australia’s Justin Kurzel (Macbeth), on which we were first to report. Starring Jude Law (Firebrand), Nicholas Hoult (X-Men franchise), Tye Sheridan (The Card Counter), Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) and more, the film will will have an exclusive release in theaters nationwide later this year.
Written by Oscar and BAFTA nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard), the film adapts Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s book The Silent Brotherhood, chronicling the escalating crimes of the titular white supremacist domestic terror group. It’s set in 1983, when a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations, and armored car heists frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. As baffled law enforcement agents scrambled for answers, a lone FBI agent (Law), stationed in the sleepy, picturesque town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, came to believe...

Cillian Murphy capped off his domination of awards season by claiming the top acting prize for film on home soil.
The Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG award winner on Saturday night added perhaps a final statue to his flawless haul of honors for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” when he was named best lead actor at the 21st Irish Film and TV Academy Awards.
“God, I’m still so brutal at this,” the famously shy actor said on collecting the award, presented to him by “Killers of the Flower Moon” star and fellow recent awards circuit regular Lily Gladstone. “But being in this room is so special — being at home, with people that I love and admire amongst my fellow nominees and some of my favorite people.” Speaking backstage afterwards at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, he added: “It feels lovely being home with so many friends and colleagues.”

Cinema for Gaza, a group launched by a small group of female filmmakers and film journalists, has successfully raised more than $315,000 to support medical aid for the civilian population in Gaza.
A celebrity auction, organized by Cinema for Gaza, and supported by the likes of Tilda Swinton, Annie Lennox, Joaquin Phoenix, Spike Lee and Guillermo del Toro, raised some $316,778 (£254,297) for Medical Aid for Palestinians (Map), a U.K.-based charity that provides on-the-ground medical support, from sterile water to cancer drugs, for those on the Gaza Strip. The celebrities donated personal items — from signed film posters to personal Zoom chats to, in the case of Lennox, the handwritten lyrics to her Eurythmics hit “Sweet Dreams” — to be sold off to the highest bidder. (Lennox’s lyrics sheet was the top seller, with a bidder paying $26,222 for the piece of pop music history).

“I assisted Avigail and Damian Collins — they were styling all the coolest music acts, including Rihanna, as part of Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn’s team,” says the U.K. stylist, who crossed over from the pop world to Hollywood. Croysdill is gearing up for Bridgerton season three with Nicola Coughlan, whose character, Penelope Featherington, will be the focus. The stylist will simultaneously be working on premieres for the Back to Black Amy Winehouse biopic with lead star Marisa Abela. “Of course, we’ll have some subtle nods to Amy. Ralph Fiennes is getting ready to begin production on The Beacon, which he will write, direct and star in. More details here.
Ralph Fiennes is a busy man. Not only is he currently starring in Shakespeare’s Macbeth in London’s West End, before the production moves to Washington DC for a run in April, Fiennes has been busy preparing for his next directorial feature film.
Fiennes has set The Beacon as his next feature film as a director, as reported by Deadline. The Beacon will be Fiennes’ fourth film as a director, but one thing sets it apart from Coriolanus, The Invisible Woman and The White Crow.
The Beacon will be based on Fiennes’ own screenplay. Talking to Deadline, Fiennes described his desire to move into screenwriting as having experienced an “impulse to try to write something myself and that just kept building”.

Battered by disappointing markets at Toronto and AFM, both of which were held under the shadow of the actors strike, buyers and sellers are looking to Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM), which runs Feb. 15-21, to re-energize the indie business. The outlook, coming out of Sundance, is good.
“The difference in Sundance from last year to this was extreme, there were a lot more deals being down, both by distributors and streamers,” says Janina Vislmaier, head of sales at Protagonist Pictures, which screened The Outrun with Saoirse Ronan and Sasquatch Sunset with Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg in Park City, both of which will screen at the EFM. “Everyone is really excited ahead of Berlin, especially because all the buyers are back, including from Asia, which is a really good sign.”

This article contains spoilers for "Saltburn."
Of all the movies that came out in the final quarter of 2023, it was the psychosexual class thriller "Saltburn" that sparked the most conversation. Sure, the movie's questionable class commentary was kind of interesting, but for the most part people talked about the infamous bathtub scene, or the bloody night-time hookup between Ollie (Barry Keoghan) and Venetia (Alison Oliver). Many have argued that these scenes were for lazy shock value, whereas others have argued that these scenes weren't really that shocking at all.
Either way, these scenes definitely stick with you long after you've left the theater, and the graveyard scene is no exception. This is the sequence where Ollie grieves by the fresh grave of his friend/obsession Felix (Jacob Elordi). The sequence is a long shot of Ollie alone in the rain, crying on the recently-settled dirt. The shot goes on for what feels like three minutes,...

Since it debuted at the Telluride Film Festival last August, few films have generated more discussion on social media than “Saltburn.” The new project from Oscar-winning writer and director Emerald Fennell has captured the fascination of TikTok users, as videos adjacent to the film have consistently gone viral on the platform to the tune of more than 4 billion views, Deadline reported. On Amazon Prime Video, where “Saltburn” premiered in late December after its theatrical run, Fennell’s follow-up to “Promising Young Woman” has dominated the charts over the last few weeks to become one of Amazon’s biggest streaming debuts ever. Even the “Saltburn” soundtrack has hit: the 2002 song “Murder on the Dancefloor” reached the top of the Spotify viral U.S. singles chart thanks to its prominent placement in the final moments of the film, when star Barry Keoghan dances in the nude to the Sophie Ellis-Bextor track.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series, spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts, continues with Saltburn, the brutally dark satirical thriller written and directed by Emerald Fennell. The pic marks her sophomore feature, on the heels of the Best Original Screenplay Oscar winner Promising Young Woman.
Stylish and idiosyncratic, Saltburn engendered huge buzz in its Telluride world premiere before going on to hit theaters in November. The Amazon MGM Studios title, set in mid-2000s England, tells the story of Oliver (Barry Keoghan), an Oxford student who initially struggles to find his place at the university, before undertaking some cunning social climbing. After making his way into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), he’s invited to his eccentric and uber-wealthy family’s estate for a summer he’ll never forget.
Without entirely spoiling the viewing experience, Fennell revealed following a screening at the Academy...

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Saltburn,” “Fair Play,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” and “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.”]
All’s fair in love, war, and other bloody battles, according to the not-quite-feminist trend of watching period sex play out onscreen.
Two of the year’s buzziest films — Chloe Domont’s Sundance stunner “Fair Play” and Emerald Fennell’s recent (and very viral) “Saltburn” — exist in the same vein (quite literally) of destigmatizing period sex, showing off cunnilingus onscreen. And yet, both films argue that the man performing this specific sexual act isn’t just pleasuring the woman in question: He’s actually taking her life force. Is that only reinforcing the symbolism of menstrual blood being a marker of the so-called “weaker sex”?
“Saltburn” has been billed as a sort of “vampire movie” by filmmaker Fennell. The scene in question shows Oliver (Barry Keoghan) taking a bite out of his current prey: Venetia (Alison Oliver), the sister of his real obsession,...

Plot: Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton, who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.
Review: We all have a fascination with the rich. The sordid lives of the aristocratic have always made for brilliant fodder in novels, television, and film. For her second directorial effort, Emerald Fennell has looked into the lives of a clan of rich Brits through the eyes of an outsider. Like Promising Young Woman, Saltburn begins as a dark comedy and an indictment of old money becomes a psychological thriller. With her trademark wit and a stellar cast led by Barry Keoghan in one of his best performances to date, Saltburn is a movie made to be recognized during awards season. The problem is that...
