Warning: contains spoilers for Ghosts series 5 episodes 1 & 2.
Until now, you might have called Mat Baynton’s Ghosts character a lot of things, but Scottish wasn’t among them. Then in series five episode two “Home”, Thomas casually dropped the intel to a pregnant Alison that he was “as Scottish as the bonny heather” and would stand by her and “the wee bairn”, never mind that Mike is – obviously -the wee bairn’s father.
Alison was as nonplussed as the rest of us and unsure as what to make of the revelation. Later in the episode, Thomas embraced his Scottish roots once again by joining Pat’s side in the North v South debate, telling Julian: “Haud yer wheesht, I’m as Scottish as shortbread in a tartan tin, sir!”
So what was going on? Had all those centuries of unrequited love simply dicked Thomas in the nob, or was he...

The Flesh and the Fiends
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1960 /95 min.
Starring Peter Cushing, Donald Pleasence, George Rose, Billie Whitelaw
Cinematography by Monty Berman
Directed by John Gilling
The Flesh and the Fiends lives up to its name and then some. The setting is Scotland but the squalid streets and charnel houses suggest Dickens’ London at its bleakest. Everything is for sale here, the fleshy whores of the cathouses and the fiends who haunt them. On the other side of the tracks lives Robert Knox, a respected anatomist at Edinburgh University who pays for his flesh too – the bodies necessary for his livelihood are in scarce supply and grave robbers William Burke and William Hare are ready to deliver.
Venerated by his students while castigated by old guard medicos, the forward-thinking Knox is a formidable presence at the podium with only one thing to mar his handsome profile, a blind eye.

After a few relatively quiet weeks to wrap up June’s home media releases, July comes roaring back with a slate of titles that genre fans will definitely want to add to their Blu-ray and DVD collections. Arrow Video has been staying extremely busy as of late, with three different releases coming out on Tuesday: Black Rainbow from Flash Gordon director Mike Hodges, Zombie for Sale, and Teruo Ishii’s Inferno of Torture. Criterion Collection is also celebrating an all-time sci-fi classic this Tuesday, The War of the Worlds, and if you haven’t had a chance to check it out on Shudder, Belzebuth is headed to both Blu-ray and DVD this week as well.
Leomark is showing some love to the Godfather of Gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis, with their Blu-ray presentation of Bloodmania, and Kino Lorber is resurrecting The Flesh and the Fiends for a Special Edition Blu this week,...

Tough-guy actor Ray Winstone believes something needs to be done about the knife crime in Britain. The 52-year-old actor, who has appeared in movies such as Scum, Beowulf and The Departed, starred alongside murdered teenager Robert Knox in 2004 movie King Arthur as he played the younger version of his character Bors. Knox, who also had a role in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was killed in May 2008 after he was stabbed outside a bar in the UK as he tried to protect his brother. Winstone said: 'I think with knife crime, it should be three strikes and you are out. 'First time you are caught with a knife, you get pulled in;...

The mother of tragic British actor Robert Knox was distraught while watching his scenes in the latest Harry Potter movie - calling it a "bittersweet experience" for the grief-stricken family.
Knox was stabbed to death while defending his brother outside a nightclub in Kent, England last May.
The 18 year old had completed a series of scenes in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince just before his murder - and his mum Sally struggled to watch her late son on the big screen when the film was released in July.
She says, "Watching him posthumously in Harry Potter was a bittersweet experience. We were all so proud, but of course it just reinforces what you've lost."
Sally Knox is determined her son's death isn't in vain, and has set up the Rob Knox Memorial Fund to help fund activity groups for teenagers.
She adds, "I tell myself that he would want me to try and make something good out of something terrible. If it can save one child then it will have been worth it."

British actor Rupert Grint was devastated by the murder of his Harry Potter co-star Robert Knox - but credits the tragedy with giving him a new outlook on life.
Knox, 18, had just completed filming alongside Grint on forthcoming movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince when he was stabbed to death outside a nightclub in Kent, England last May.
The teenager's untimely passing had a big impact on Grint - because he had never had to deal with the death of a peer before.
But Grint reveals the tragic turn of events has inspired him to reflect on his own life.
He tells Britain's Live magazine, "Rob didn’t have a big role in the film but I got to know him well.
"Everyone on the set liked him. He was a funny lad, a proper character. Going to his funeral... that was a sad day. Rob was the first young person I knew who’d died.
"The enormity of his death hasn’t really sunk in for me yet. But I’ve learnt something from it in terms of counting my blessings, realising how lucky I am and the importance of making the right decisions for the future."...

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has sent a touching note of condolence to the mother of tragic co-star Robert Knox, who was stabbed to death in a brutal attack last year.
Eighteen year old Knox lost his life last May after a fight outside a nightclub in Kent, England turned violent. His killer, 22 year old Karl Bishop, was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday.
And Radcliffe has joined forces with Knox's close friends and colleagues from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to pay tribute to the young actor - by turning a copy of author J.K. Rowling's sixth novel, on which the film is based, into a book of condolences for Knox's mother.
Radcliffe wrote, "We are all proud to have known you and devastated to have lost you. It is terrible just to write this note. Rest In Peace."
He also quoted a line from a letter by poet D.H. Lawrence, adding, "To anyone else who reads this remember, 'The Dead don't die. They look on and help'", before signing the note, "Dan xxx".

The thug who stabbed Harry Potter actor Robert Knox to death in a revenge-fuelled attack has been jailed for life.
Karl Bishop knifed the 18-year-old five times outside a nightclub in Kent, England last May.
Bishop had earlier been involved with a heated argument with Knox's younger brother, 17-year-old Jamie.
After the bust-up, he returned home to arm himself with two kitchen knives before heading back to the bar to confront the siblings.
Sentencing him at the Old Bailey court in London on Thursday, the judge, Mr Justice Beam, told Bishop he must serve a minimum of 20 years before being considered for parole.
He said: "Rob Knox was among those who tried to disarm you. He paid for his bravery with his life. The death of Rob has been a devastating loss to his parents, his brother and his many friends. Their lives will be damaged forever. Rob Knox was a promising young actor who achieved a great deal."
Witnesses in the trial told jurors how the 22-year-old killer's face "screwed in rage" as he lunged the blades at Knox and a group of pals, plunging the knives into his victims up to ten times in less than two minutes.
Bishop - who was under investigation for previous knife offences and burglary - was also found guilty of wounding another man, Dean Saunders, who was left with permanent spinal damage.

A thug who stabbed Harry Potter actor Robert Knox to death in an horrific revenge attack is facing life in jail after he was found guilty of murder.
Karl Bishop, 22, plunged a blade into the 18-year-old actor five times outside a nightclub in Kent, England in May last year.
Bishop - who has previous convictions for knife offences - had earlier been involved in a huge bust-up with Knox's 17-year-old brother Jamie.
After the argument, he returned home to arm himself with two kitchen knives before heading back to the bar to confront Knox and his brother.
Bystanders saw Bishop's face "screwed up in rage" as he lashed out the pair and their friends, stabbing his victims up to ten times in less than two minutes.
The jury was told of Knox's "courage and sense of duty" as he tried to protect his younger brother - but his bravery led to his death.
Prosecutor Brian Altman QC told the court the aspiring actor's life was brought to an end by Bishop, an "habitual knife carrier" who saw stabbing people as nothing more than an "occupational hazard".
In addition to Knox's murder, Bishop was also convicted of wounding Knox's friend Dean Saunders during the attack, leaving the 23-year-old with permanent spinal damage. He was cleared of wounding another man, Tom Hopkins.
Bishop will be sentenced at a later date.
Knox completed filming the role of Marcus Belby in Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince just days before his death.
His funeral was attended by hundreds of mourners, including co-star Rupert Grint, who watched Knox's father tell the gathered crowds his late son had been "living the dream" after landing the part.

Harry Potter star Robert Knox was stabbed to death defending his brother from a convicted knife offender, a U.K. court has heard. The 18-year-old, who appears as Marcus Belby in the forthcoming film Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, died from multiple stab wounds following an altercation in Kent, England in May.
Karl Bishop, 21, stands accused of stabbing the aspiring actor five times outside a local bar.
It was Knox's "courage and sense of duty" to his younger brother, 17-year-old Jamie, who had earlier been threatened at knifepoint, that cost him his life, the Old Bailey court in London was told on Monday.
Prosecutors alleged that five other teenagers were seriously injured trying to restrain the attacker as he "lunged and swung" two kitchen knives at them.
It is reported the tragedy followed a series of altercations, including an incident at the same venue the previous week, after which Bishop allegedly promised revenge against Knox and his pals, saying, "I'm going to come back and someone's going to die."
Prosecuting attorney Brian Altman told the court room, "Rob was just one of a number of young people who over the past year or so have fallen victim to knife crime in London.
"He was particularly unfortunate because he fell victim to a young man who was not only an habitual knife carrier but also someone who would quite happily deploy and use knives as weapons, two in this case, to settle scores. That is precisely what happened here."
Bishop denies murder and five charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to five other youths, claiming he was acting in self-defence.
The case continues.
