Words and music blend perfectly to present the extraordinary new film Side A Side B. Written and directed by Sudhish Kamath, this indie musical stars debutants Rahul Rajkhowa and Shivranjani Singh.
Side A Side B is the bittersweet romantic journey of a young couple taking one last 44-hour train trip together with their cat Lou, from Guwahati to Mumbai, as the fate of their relationship hangs in the balance. The musical, which plays out through ten songs, captures the many moments, both past, present, and future, between the young lovers. The tracks take us on a journey of the pair, who are torn between ambition and growing distance as Joel and Shivi realise they might be headed in different directions. But, does their harmony come together, or does it go into a different key? You will have to find out!
Fascinatingly, the movie was mostly shot on a train over 44 hours.

It takes huge balls to make a film like Side A Side B. Frankly, I'm surprised that writer/director Sudhish Kamath can sit comfortably with what he must be packing between his legs in order to have conceived this little adventure of his. An eighty minute romantic musical, shot over the course of a forty-four train ride from Guwahati in India's northeast to Mumbai in the west, with 8 songs, all shot live with live sound on the train and only two performers and six crew, at most, to capture the whole thing, on two mobile phones. Impossible, you say? Well, I thought so, too. But I'll be damned if the thing isn't absolutely charming, and a bit too relatable to anyone who has ever been...

2012 turned out to be a year when a number of smaller or independent films made their way onto many Top Ten lists. But, as always, there are films that, for a number of reasons, risk being forgotten or overlooked, especially in a year where there are so many great films to choose from. Here are 13 films – 10 already released, 3 from the festival circuit – that you should have seen in 2012. It’s still not too late!
Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid (dir. Nila Madhab Panda)
It’s a massive shame that Nila Madhab Panda’s film didn’t get as much attention as his I Am Kalam, and also a shame that the film was released to DVD without English subtitles. Because Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid, like I Am Kalam, weaves an issue into a story about, and for, children and families, and the message it carries (about the value of women and...

Any independent film producer will tell you that the completion date of a film is significantly less important than the release date. Rajshree Ojha's Chaurahen (Crossroads) was completed in 2007 and has been traveling the festival circuit for several years before finally hitting Indian cinema screens this last Friday. The distributor, PVR Director's Rare, also recently released Sudhish Kamath's intimate rom-com, Good Night | Good Morning, which opened to rave reviews and unfortunately little business. Chaurahen seems like it might be destined for a similar fate, though perhaps less critical fanfare for a film with a lot to say and relatively little to grab you.The film charts the paths of three groups of people in three different parts of India over the course of a...

For those familiar with indie movies, Seema Rahmani is not a new name. Having started her acting career with television, Seema made an impression with her movie Sins (starring Shiny Ahuja) followed by Loins of Punjab Presents and Missed Call. The lovely actress in an exclusive with BollySpice:
How did acting happen to you? Is this something you always wanted to do or it happened by chance?
It happened by chance. I had performed in a musical and a play in school but didn’t know I would be an actor. I was in public relations for two years when I realized it wasn’t the career I wanted for the rest of my life. A couple of people suggested I go into modeling. I didn’t really want to do that, and so I took some time off, prayed intensely for direction, and the universe conspired, so to speak,...

The well of films whose action takes place over the course of a single night runs deep. However, typically these stories, particularly the love stories, follow a couple on a wild fling through the congested streets of some lively city. Sudhish Kamath's Good Night | Good Morning eschews the easy route and takes the story in new, but real, directions. With a minimal cast, crew, and budget, Kamath spins this deeply affecting love story from bits of thread that add up to greater than the sum of their parts. Good Night | Good Morning chronicles a series of late night phone calls between a lovelorn single man riding in a car with his buddies from New York City to Philly, and a lovely but lonely...

Boglarka Nagy, a film writer and festival programmer from Romania writes on Indian movies at the Transilvania International Film Festival, Cluj, Romania, 3-12. June 2011.
One of the major film events in Eastern Europe is the Transilvanian International Film Festival in Cluj, Romania, that throughout its existence of ten years has brought many highlights of the international film scene to a city of 3,50,000 people who may not have had another chance otherwise to welcome directors and actors like Catherine Deneuve, Wim Wenders, Michael Radford, Julie Delpy and Harvey Keitel. But these names are not the real value of this film festival for the Romanians, it’s rather getting to know about what goes on in the film industry across the world and to let the international professionals know about the lately more and more popular Romanian cinema – this is though generally valid for most big film festivals: they are a way...

Thankfully for us, the past few years have seen "Indie" films (popularly nicknamed in India as parallel cinema, i.e. do not boast of the typical masala bolly-fare) going mainstream. While Indian audiences are still miles away from giving our independent filmmakers the same adulation as our commercial 'big-production-house' backed directors, it is heartening to see that what was earlier restrictive to select art audiences and festivals screenings is getting a healthier reception among regular cinegoers. Making rounds of several national plus International film festivals, Sudhish Kamath's (co-written with Shilpa Rathnam) Good Night | Good Morning is an independent film about an all-night phone call between two strangers. Sudhish, an expert movie critic; fabulous host on a chat show (Hands up), goes behind the camera for the second time, with this 80 odd-minutes film.

It is beyond unfortunate that the Indian film industry almost ignores its independent filmmakers. In fact, I'll go out a limb to even say that some of our most prestigious directors could learn immense lessons on originality, execution and the real art of film making from indie filmmakers. One such director includes the uber talented Sudhish Kamath. His film, Good Night | Good Morning was featured at a number of film festivals around the world including: The South Asian International Film Festival in New York and Mumbai Film Festival this year. The lucky lot who managed to bag tickets to the film raved nonstop about Good Night | Good Morning . Whether it was the simple story, the writing, the message or the performances, Sudhish Kamath had scored. So what is all the fuss about? You're about to find out!

The Mumbai Film Festival has been churning out some of the most amazing independent films, one of which is Sudhish Kamath's Good Night | Good Morning. Talking about the film, the director went on to tell BollySpice, "A friend of mine, Krishna, bought a HD camera and said, "Let's make a movie". After my experience making an ensemble film with parallel narratives with a low budget ("That Four Letter Word"), I told him we can't make a movie without money, unless the script itself organically does not require a budget. With no money, you can only make a film with two people talking over the phone." The film pays homage to the director's favorite Hollywood filmmaker, Cameron Crowe. "I am now planning to hunt him down in La, heading there next, and show him the film. I hope he likes it. This is like the Guru Dakshina to the man I learnt a lot from,...
