Jimmy Fallon has offered a mea culpa to his staff after a report highlighted a “pretty glum atmosphere” at The Tonight Show over the years.
Deadline understands that Fallon spoke to staff this afternoon after Rolling Stone published an article that called the NBC show a “toxic workplace”.
“I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. I never set out to create that type of atmosphere at the show. I think sometimes I’m working with the best of the best, you guys are the top of the game,” he told staff according to someone on the call.
He admitted to have done “embarrassing” things in the past. “I want this show to be fun, it should be inclusive for everybody, it should be funny, it should be the best show, the best people. I just wanted to… say I miss you guys.”

AT&T already a long list of “to-dos” when it comes to WarnerMedia, the big entertainment conglomerate it purchased for $85 billion in 2018. Jeff Zucker’s exit from CNN makes it even longer.
Jeff Zucker’s announcement Thursday that he will exit his role as president of CNN, and, presumably, as head of Turner Sports, by the end of 2021 sets another hurdle before the telecom giant and WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar as they strive to broaden consumer use of the streaming-video hub HBO Max and push adoption of 5G technology that will make it all more accessible.
As executives work on those goals, they will need the revenue and profit they derive from traditional but out-of-vogue assets like cable networks and movies, long WarnerMedia’s stock in trade Under Zucker, CNN has thrown off more than $1 billion in annual profit and, in recent weeks, enjoyed a surge of viewership that put it...

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is undergoing some executive changes.
Jamie Granet-Bederman has been promoted to showrunner of the NBC late-night show after Gavin Purcell stepped down to return to his development deal with Universal Television.
Nedaa Sweiss, who was previously head writer for The Tonight Show, has also been named co-showrunner for the next few months.
This comes after Purcell has overseen the show for a year, after taking over from Jim Bell in November 2019. He was instrumental in overseeing The Tonight Show’s At Home episodes as well as helping it become the first show to return to the studio in July.
Purcell, who was previously showrunner and executive producer for Hulu’s sketch and talk show I Love You America with Sarah Silverman, signed an exclusive overall deal with the NBCU studio in March 2019 – six months before taking over the Fallon show.

Jamie Granet-Bederman, a longtime producer of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” who has worked with the host for more than a decade, will take over showrunner duties for the venerable NBC late-night program, the latest change to the series’ top echelon of executives.
Gavin Purcell, who has been leading the program on an interim basis since late last year, will return to working on a development deal that he has at Universal Television.
In picking Granet-Bederman, Fallon and “Tonight” are choosing to stay with a show insider, after meeting with challenges when outside producers have come in to lead efforts. NBC in November parted ways with Jim Bell, an NBC News and NBC Sports veteran, who was named to lead the program as it met with ratings challenges against CBS’ “Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” Another “Tonight” executive producer, Josh Lieb, a former Comedy Central producer, left “Tonight” in...

Gavin Purcell is exiting as “Tonight Show” showrunner. He will be replaced by Jamie Granet-Bederman, who is bringing back former head writer Nedaa Sweiss to be co-showrunner.
Purcell will return to his development deal at Universal Television — the one he had in place when he joined “The Tonight Show” — where he will work across a broad spectrum of genres, according to NBC.
Granet-Bederman has worked with Fallon for 11 years now, dating back to his “Late Night” days. Sweiss, who served as head writer for “Tonight Show” from last year until February, will only be co-showrunner through the end of the year to help Granet-Bederman shape the show’s creative. Sweiss has sitcoms in development at ABC and CBS.

GameStop intends to re-open stores in certain regions while reducing pay and bonuses for employees and executives as part of the company’s latest response to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Today, we announced salary reductions for our senior management team and board of directors, as well as wage rate reductions for some other corporate and field support staff,” GameStop chief executive officer George Sherman said in a press release. “In addition, we have offered certain corporate and other support team members the option to work under either half-time/half-pay structure or a temporary furlough program.
“The situation remains very fluid and a great deal of uncertainty remains, however, we entered into this time with a strong balance sheet and believe that we have sufficient cash and liquidity for the foreseeable future and will continue to take all of the necessary steps to ensure GameStop remains a strong and vibrant company at the end of this crisis.

Jimmy Fallon has been kicking off each recent episode of The Tonight Show with a shout-out to the Red Cross charity initiative backed by State Farm. On Friday, he was interrupted by his daughter Franny bursting through the door of his garage, kicking off her boots after discovering her dad talking to the camera.
“There you go, that’s the moment,” showrunner Gavin Purcell tells Deadline. “That’s what working from home is all about.”

Emmy-nominated comedian and Saturday Night Live cast member Leslie Jones is no stranger to sporting. Prior to kick-starting her career in comedy, Jones attended Chapman University, followed by Colorado State University, on a basketball scholarship. “The plan was to get an education and then maybe play for the U.S. Olympic team,” Jones told her Csu’s The Magazine in 2015.
Although she never made it to the Olympics as an athlete, Jones would find another avenue in 2016. Decked out in an American flag cape, medals and a “Team USA” cap,...

Jenna Bush Hager will succeed Kathie Lee Gifford in the fourth hour of “Today,” NBC News confirmed Tuesday, setting up a new partnership with Hoda Kotb that executives no doubt hope will prove as enduring as the one it replaces.
“Jenna joined ‘Today’ nearly ten years ago and she quickly became a fixture in our family. Her compassion and curiosity come through in all of her stories, along with her Texas-sized sense of humor. Jenna instantly connects with everyone she meets, whether they are guests on our show or fans on the Plaza,” said Noah Oppenheim, president of NBC News, in a memo to staffers. “While it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to Kathie Lee, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to make some changes at 10 a.m. This is just the first of many! The show is evolving, and we will have additional announcements to share with you in the coming months.

NBC Sports Group president Pete Bevacqua has been given oversight of the entire NBC Sports division, effective immediately.
Bevacqua, among other things, will have oversight of NBC Olympics, which had been run by Jim Bell, who is now showrunner of Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show.” Bevacqua also gains control of production and operations.
Mark Lazarus, who has run NBC’s sports operations since 2011, last month added oversight of NBCUniversal’s East Coast-based content businesses, including NBC News Group, CNBC and the Cable Entertainment portfolio, as part of an executive shakeup. He assumed the cable portfolio from Bonnie Hammer, who is now running NBCU’s direct-to-consumer business, including its forthcoming streaming service in 2020.
