Matt Hearn, producer of “Wolf Creek,” one of Australia’s biggest genre exports, is backing “Penny Lane is Dead,” the feature debut of Australian writer-director and makeup artist Mia’kate Russell.
Set up at Melbourne’s Buffalo Media, headed by André Lima, who will produce “Penny Lane is Dead” with Hearn, “Penny Lane” looks like one of the strongest projects being brought onto the market this week at Frontières, in terms of its behind the camera talent package and financing.
“Penny Lane” features among Frontières’ six Forum projects, a program reserved for films in advanced stages of financing.

The nominees for this year’s Australian Production Design Guild Awards have been unveiled, with 106 nominees across 27 categories – six of which are new.
The production designers behind Winchester, Upgrade, Peter Rabbit and The Lego Ninjago Movie are in contention for the best production on a feature film award, while those who helped to put together Harrow, Top of the Lake: China Girl, Friday On My Mind and Picnic at Hanging Rock will vie for the equivalent award in TV.
Apdg president George Liddle said: “The Guild is thrilled to represent all the talent from the diverse areas of design and to highlight and award the outstanding work produced over the last year in our annual awards.
With a growing membership from screen and live performance design practitioners, and the inclusion of the six new categories, we can also highlight the achievements of designers working on international productions, web series and in the game industry.

The zombie infestation of pop culture has definitely gotten out of hand, but it’s hard not to have a big grin on your face when you learn about a short horror film entitled Waterborne that’s about zombie kangaroos. The film already has 11,000 likes on Fb, which translates to three give a f*!%’s. The film is going to be used as a proof of concept for a feature film in 2014. We can only hope. The image of the flesh eating kangaroo, which you obviously came to see, is below.
