American Idol is one of the most popular singing competition shows on television. It made stars out of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, and Scotty McCreery. The show might be built on finding amazing singers, but one former contestant recently revealed that the producers are more interested in getting viewers.

Former “American Idol” star Sanjaya Malakar has come out as bisexual.
Malakar, who was a finalist on the sixth season of the show back in 2006, spoke out about his sexuality in a new interview on “The Adam Sank Show” podcast.
The singer, 32, who auditioned for “Idol” alongside his sister Shyamali, who was eliminated during Hollywood Week, told the host: “I identify as bisexual. At the time [that I was on ‘American Idol’], I did not know, which was why it was so weird for me.”
Malakar told Sank how he was “raised by women” and was in theatre growing up, admitting: “I had a hard time figuring out how to interact with young boys because my dad’s from India and grew up in a temple, so there was never like, ‘This is how you are a boy.’
“And then, my mom is an A-type personality, Italian-American woman, and [so are] her sisters and my sister and all of that,...

We laughed. We cried. We laughed some more. Thanks, Katy Perry!
The “American Idol” finale may have been a little lackluster in terms of star power, but the judge in the middle seat — when she could endure sitting in it for more than a minute — more than made up for it. Whether it was begging Bachelorette contender Becca Kufrin for her hand — and a chance to compete on the ABC show — or spinning herself silly after the revelation that Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe are now a couple, or mock fawning over hottie Trevor Holmes, who showed up again in a cute video sendup of Richle’s “Hello” with Ada Vox and Noah Davis, between Perry’s snappy retorts, her physical comedy or her pop culture know-how, there was not a dull moment.

(Spoiler alert: Please don’t read on if you haven’t watched Monday’s season finale of “American Idol”)
Sorry, ABC’s inaugural “American Idol” winner Maddie Poppe — you’ve already been outshined. On Monday, Jimmy Kimmel brought together a bunch of forgotten “Idol” alums like William Hung, Sanjaya Malakar, Chewbacca Girl, and the “Pants on the Ground” guy, “General” Larry Platt, for an all-star parody performance of “We Are the World.”
With all due respect to Sanjaya, there were also some actual good singers in the mix — even winners Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard showed up for the gag.

Antonella Barba, Kevin Covais, Haley Reinhart, Scott MacIntyre, and Reynaldo Lapuz also participated in the pre-taped sketch. Be honest, reader: How many of them do you actually remember?

In celebration of American Idol‘s Season 16 finale on Monday night, Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Idol reunion we never knew we wanted. (Well, “wanted” is a term we use loosely.)
In the video above, Idol rejects from years past — everyone from William “She Bangs” Hung to Sanjaya Malakar to Trista Giese, aka Chewbacca Girl — gather to update us on their careers via the original ditty “Where Are They Now?”
Some notable updates from the onetime contestants: Malakar works at a bar (but does construction on the side!), Season 5 competitor Kevin Covais is a notary public “right here in L.A.

Hear What William Hung, Ruben Studdard and More American Idol Alums Are Up to in This Hilarious Song
Maddie Poppe was crowned the winner of American Idol on Monday. While the 19-year-old singer is the show's first champion since its revival on ABC, there were a lot of contestants who came before her over its 15 seasons at Fox. Jimmy Kimmel reunited a few memorable alumni on Monday's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and had the past contestants sing about their lives since the show in a song called "Where Are They Now?" The late-night host brought back William Hung, who became famous for singing Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" during his season three audition. He also brought back season six's Sanjaya Malakar, who's remembered for his hair as well as his voice, and Antonella...

So that's where he's been all this time! During American Idol season 16's live two-hour finale on Monday night, longtime fans were hit with a major blast from the past: Sanjaya Malakar! Jimmy Kiimmel came out with a time capsule that was buried in Ryan Seacrest's zucchini garden filed with relics from American Idol's 15-season fun on Fox, including Steven Tyler's many scarves, the only purchased copy of From Justin to Kelly, Sanjaya's infamous hair...and Sanjaya himself. But the biggest surprise of all was the fact that he had shaved off all of his hair. So long, faux-hawk! And guess who was in the audience? The Crying Girl, all grown-up! You remember her as the 13-year-old...

Has Mark Isaiah become the Sanjaya Malakar of The Voice? Going into Monday’s performances by Season 12’s Top 10, it certainly seemed so. Though more than half of you who voted in our elimination poll last week would have sent the Austin Mahone wannabe packing, he remained in the contest, the recipient of a puzzling instant save. Did he finally hit upon a song that would allow him to win something more than Adam Levine’s admiration and fourth place in a high school talent show? Did Vanessa Ferguson Riri-cover from her “Diamonds” misstep? Did Chris Blue manage to top...

American Idol has a lot in common with the country it's named after — a swift rise, fueled by lofty populist ideals and naked aggression, world conquest, such giddy heights, then the tragic skid into despair and and it's all somehow Fox's fault. The end of the Idol empire should have been a much bigger deal. It should have been an event. But instead, last night's farewell episode just kind of dribbled away, like the final season overall. "Let's do a Bowie tribute, except instead of Adam Lambert or Fantasia, we'll...

In spring 2007, American Idol had what could be called its Donald Trump moment.
The sixth season of Fox's make-me-a-pop-superstar/talent-show juggernaut had acquainted millions of Americans with a contestant named Sanjaya Malakar. He was a sweet, mildly talented and – at some fundamental level – rather silly 17-year-old. Judge Simon Cowell regarded him as a waste of time and undeserving of a continued spot on the Idol stage.
And yet he stayed. Viewers kept voting to keep him in the competition. Why?

It's the end of an era on American Idol, as the audition process draws to its conclusion for the final time.
From the highs (Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood) to the lows (Kenneth Briggs, Jonathan Jayne, damn right you sent them to the Super Bowl), the viral (William Hung, Larry Platt) to the Cowell-panned split decisions (Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry), all the way down to the vote-for-the-worst crowd that stuck around way too long (Sanjaya Malakar, Kevin Covais, Tim Urban), Idol auditions have been ingrained in pop culture for the past decade and a half.

We'd waited months, debated Twitter fouls and argued over the too-much-too-soon of it all — finally, last week, we got a taste of what a Trevor Noah-led Daily Show would actually be like. The South African comedian had the tall task of replacing Jon Stewart, who over a decade ago turned the politically savvy late-night show into a nightly ritual for many Americans (and more recently, a reliable source for "so-and-so destroys such-and-such" articles on the Internet). The first few nights mostly inspired a lot "he seems unflappable" comments — and...

Once upon a time, American Idol could do no wrong. Ratings rained down from the heavens, plentiful and consistent, and each season brought Simon Cowell's zings and Paula Abdul's improvised poetry, with talented cherubs just looking for their big breaks. What a glorious and innocent time we had. Special, even. How mighty was our joy, how communal our sorrows. I voted for Clay Aiken many times. But then the storm clouds rolled in, and the thundering voice of TV God shouted, "Be careful what you wish for!" Lo, we had not been careful, and Idol began to reflect the worst in our nature: the Schadenfreude, the mockery, our desire to dispose of celebrities. We were like cruel deep-sea divers, shining our poisonously bright light into the darkness, poking around a bit, and then fleeing, with no regard for the damage our observations had inflicted. Remember Sanjaya? Oh, just barely.

Well, we’re getting into the weird part. Considering that 2006 and 2007 were mere blinks ago, the idea of revisiting these years via VH1′s rose-colored nostalgia goggles is certainly an unsettling one.

Look, maybe you and your stepson are right and American Idol has jumped the shark. I accept your wrongness/common sense. But if you tuned in last night to the Top 6's "Burt Bacharach/Songs You Wish You Wrote"-themed evening, you can't deny that it delivered everything that has ever mattered about American Idol, including vocal triumphs, ferocious attitude, the dismal failure of a teenage dandy, Randy Jackson's gift for thoughts, 17-year-olds being forced to perform the songs of Jackie DeShannon, and Ryan Seacrest's attempts at empathy. Every time he nervously puts his hand on Lazaro's shoulder, it's like a deleted scene from Speilberg's A.I. is upon us.
Then there's the other emotionally troubled member of the American Idol brain surgeon gallery: Mariah Carey. I've defended her long enough and still believe she delivers an iota's worth of real advice every 15 minutes or so, but man,...

Not only is the Florida ice cream scooper of questionable talent, but his mere presence in this self-serious competition seems like a cruel joke. That being said, Lazaro -- who, as if by some miracle of the Idol gods, wound up in the top three Thursday along with the deserving Kree Harrison and Angie Miller -- certainly has fans in his corner, despite not knowing the words to any of his songs. Come on, Lazaro, you have a whole week to learn the music. Stage fright? Not an excuse.

Now 23, the flamboyant singer has toned down his appearance considerably. He reportedly moved to New York almost five years ago, having participated in busking music festivals in his native Seattle, but said that "the idea of busking in New York has always been a fun idea for me."

New York City Subway users can thank Sanjaya Malakar for their entertainment. The season six American Idol contestant was recently spotted sharing his musical gifts with passersby who were waiting to ride the underground transit line at the First Avenue (L) station in the Big Apple. An eyewitness told InTouch Magazine that the 23-year-old was belting Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." Malakar, who ultimately became more famous for his crazy hairstyles than any sort of vocal talent, placed seventh on Idol. But, while he didn't exactly find his way to superstardom, at least he's still doing what he loves most—singing.

Ten dames stepped up to the mic on Wednesday night. Nine of them sang. One of them exploded.
And was rewarded for it.
And... I'm fine with it? Let this be a lesson to everyone: If you are a fine singer who gets an opportunity to wow the nation on American Idol, but you choose the lite-fm nonchalance of Alicia Keys' "No One," maybe you deserve to finish between 20th and 40th place. Maybe I think that's justified, Cristabel Clacky. And maybe if you're a howling claymation clown sorceress named Zoanette Johnson who sets the bar for unthinkable camp monstrosities with a performance of (wait for it) "The Circle of Life," maybe you really do earn your place in the Top 20 -- even if you can't sing, control yourself, or really do anything except blubber and wail like a watercolor-drenched Pagliacci. Maybe.
Actually, I'm not sure. Zoanette Johnson was...

It's no fun to kick a show when it's already down. That seems to be the philosophy behind the impending closure of the "Vote for the Worst" website, a place devoted to destroying "American Idol" by elevating the worst singers to the top. The site will close for good after the upcoming season 12, disappearing in June 2013.
The voice behind "Vote for the Worst," a guy named Dave, posted an announcement about this on Sunday (Jan. 13). The lengthy explanation for his site's closure cited the decreasing ratings and increasing irrelevance of "Idol" to pop culture.
"Vote for the Worst" began in 2004 as a reaction to "a show that took itself way too seriously." Since then, the site has gained fame/notoriety by encouraging votes for contestants like Sanjaya Malakar. It has also encouraged the "white guy with guitar" phenomenon seen over the past few seasons of "American Idol."

If you know who Sanjaya is, the website you have to “thank” is shutting down.
Vote for the Worst, a website started in 2004 encouraging fans of American Idol to vote for the worst contestant to bring about the end of the show, is coming to its own end. To quote its creator Dave’s own post announcing the shut down: “They say when your critics stop talking about you, you’re finished. We’ve been American Idol’s biggest critic, but we’re leaving before we get completely bored with a show that really should’ve bowed out gracefully a few years ago.

America's Got Talent judge Howard Stern referenced American Idol season 6 finalist Sanjaya Malakar as the axe finally came down on the pint-sized Big Barry during Wednesday night's elmination show. "For some reason [if] you go through, it will be a Sanjaya moment," the shock-jock told the wannabe lounge singer. Here’s a treat for you, “American Idol” fans.
When news broke of Dick Clark’s death yesterday, the Internet was abuzz with tributes — many including YouTube videos featuring some of Clark’s finest, funniest, or most memorable moments.
This one, however, might be one that Randy Jackson would like to forget. First of all, he’s playing bass for… Michael Bolton??? (And not the cool Michael Bolton from “Office Space.”) Second of all, look at that hair! It’s as if he had it styled to look like a Green Bay Packers “cheesehead” hat, which isn’t a good look on anybody.
And, sadly, it also explains why Randy said he actually liked Sanjaya’s “fauxhawk” during Season 6 of “Idol.”
Check out Randy Jackson’s current hair style — or lack thereof — tonight on the “American Idol” elimination show at 8/7c on Fox.

American Idol's lucky seven had a mostly fantastic night on Wednesday. But when everyone does well, it only makes elimination night harder. "I'm always worried, Ryan, when it gets to this point in the competition," Randy Jackson told host Seacrest at the beginning of Thursday's results show. "I got to be honest with you - I said it last night - nobody's safe." It's true that top contenders at this point in the competition have been eliminated. It happened to Jennifer Hudson, who performed "Think Like a Man" with Ne-Yo on Thursday. Then again, it also happened to Sanjaya Malakar.

There's almost always a singer on each season of "American Idol" who makes it way deeper into the competition than expected. But season 11 of the show has seen two unlikely finalists — Heejun Han and DeAndre Brackensick — stumble into the top nine and onto this summer's cast tour despite a string of, respectively, jokey and lackluster performances that have drawn assorted raspberries from the judges and outright derision at times from music-industry icon and show mentor Jimmy Iovine.
Their resilience got MTV News wondering if perhaps they have a special magic that some of the other eliminated finalists haven't discovered yet. We spoke to some of our favorite "Idol" experts to take a...

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

It's Billy Joel week on "American Idol" and we're pumped because we love Billy Joel, so it makes us really sad none of the contestants (save "oldies" Erika and Elise) seem know who he is. Before anybody sings, we would like to post our wishlist for what everybody chooses this week:
Jessica: This Is The Time, Erika: New York State of Mind, Elise: The Lights Go Out on Broadway, esp. with piano, Hollie: Honesty, Skylar: You May Be Right, Phillip: River of Dreams, Heejun: She's Got a Way, Colton: The Stranger, esp. with piano and whistling, Joshua: Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel), DeAndre: Just the Way You Are. Let's see if we get any right... (we are really keeping our fingers crossed for Erika on "New York" and Colton on "The Stranger").
Also, how many of these kids do you think don't know a single Billy Joel song? That's sad.

You can’t always get what you want, as Mick Jagger (and later, Crystal Bowersox) once sang, and that adage has certainly been applicable to most of American Idol‘s first 399 episodes.
On Wednesday, however, in celebration of the 400th installment of the reality-competition granddaddy, Uncle Nigel took a page from Burger King’s ad department and produced an episode that let the Idoloonie Nation have it their way: A Top 13 packed almost entirely with solid (and varied) vocalists. Specific, constructive critiques from the judges. A mentor with serious chops, good humor, and spot-on advice. A clear, unmuddied sound mix.

Dear America,
You don't know me, but I'm the guy who's been sitting on his couch for several hours each week for nearly 10 years yelling things like, "Are you effing kidding me?," "Seriously, that guy/girl?" and "Oh, come on, how is it possible that we're even watching the same show?"
I did it because, like you, I was entranced by "American Idol" and the drama of watching potential stars climb their way to the top each week. I held on because I knew the payoff would be that triumphant final night when the confetti falls, Lionel Richie (or Kiss, or some other act your mom loves) sings a duet with a finalist and we get to hear that awful coronation song...

Music-wise, Sparks showed off a new adult image in 2011 with "I Am Woman" and provided background vocals for Demi Lovato's anthem "Skyspcraper." Her third album is still Tba,...

When Geo took the stage I had no clue that he was about to horrify millions of viewers — this guy should be arrested don’t you agree?
X Factor is pushing the limits to an extreme point — and I love it! Simon Cowell‘s international hit made it’s American debut on Sept. 21 and I must admit I expected a big yawn, but boy was I wrong. Judge La Reid said that he looks for something that is going to cause the “hair on my arms to rise” and “move my soul” and I can tell you that one woman did it for me.
But before I get to who I believe will be the biggest star since Celine Dion,...

It has been four years since Sanjaya, err, graced the stage of American Idol, but he’s still apparently one of the greatest punch lines for the comics warming up the crowds at reality show singing competitions. Take last night at the live, semi-finals round of NBC’s The Voice, where warm-up comic Bill was pumping up the crowd before the competition. “Cee Lo is performing tonight!” he roared to the crowds inside Stage 16 on Warner Bros.’s Burbank lot, in an attempt to get the masses enthusiastic.
And then he added: “Sanjaya is performing! No, I wouldn’t do that to you…...

Scotty McCreery is the new American Idol! The teenaged country singer beat Lauren Alaina to win the the title which capped off a spectacular show. The two hour Season 10 finale took place at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles and they really packed in as much as they could. Beyonce dazzled on stage, Jennifer Lopez sparkled in a very JLo-esque jumpsuit and old and new American Idol contestants turned up in hordes. Like Sanjaya Malakar — remember him? A lot of this seasons contestants got to sing with their idols like Tony Bennett, Tim McGraw, Tom Jones, Judas Priest …. and Lady Gaga! Jack Black rocking out? Classic!
But more than anything, we were just happy to see some of our contestants and winners of past American Idol’s. Adam Lambert who was so glam it hurt, Allison Iraheta, Jason Castro (with his preggers wife Mandy Mayhall), Kris Allen… the list goes on.

Win or lose, we hope this guy is always an American Idol in his new son's eyes. The gentlemen who have commanded the Idol stage over the last 10 years have followed a variety of paths since winning the competition, like Taylor Hicks and Kris Allen did; coming up a wee bit short, like Justin Guarini; or falling waaaaay short but becoming a media sensation, like Sanjaya Malakar. But only one of them became a father for the first time at 6:26 this morning... And it's Justin Guarini! The season-one runner-up and wife Reina Capodici welcomed their first child together, son William Neko Bell Guarini, early Tuesday morning, Guarini's rep confirms to E! News. The 7-pound, 2-ouncer...
