Over a decade after creating Marcel the Shell with Jenny Slate, director Dean Fleishcer Camp now brings the character into a feature-length animation with Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. Filmmaker Dean (Camp) moves into an Airbnb where he finds a tiny talking shell named Marcel (Slate). Marcel lives in the home with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and has created whimsical and resourceful ways of dealing with problems in his everyday life. Dean begins filming Marcel’s antics and uploads the videos to YouTube, leading to Marcel becoming a cultural phenomenon that attracts the attention of 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl. To make sure he didn’t lose the charm of his original animated shorts, Camp stuck to a documentary-style approach to filming.
Deadline: Where did the original idea for the short films come from?

Marcel the Shell With Shoes On — the A24 feature film from Dean Fleischer-Camp and Jenny Slate based on their viral hit starring an animated mollusk with one eye and a pair of kicks — is a tribute to the power of family, the comfort of grandmothers … and legendary 60 Minutes reporter Lesley Stahl.
She is praised as “fearless” and “heroic” in the film, in which she plays herself in scenes depicting an interview with Marcel. But it wasn’t until she was seated in the theater for a preview screening that Stahl learned of the magnitude of the homage. “I was stunned and a little embarrassed. I blushed,” Stahl tells THR of seeing the film alongside 60 Minutes colleagues, including producer Shari Finkelstein, who also plays herself in the film. “I was embarrassed that I’d asked them to come see such a love letter to me.

Even though she is on the cusp of turning 80, Lesley Stahl is still climbing mountains.
Thirty years ago, the “60 Minutes” correspondent “huffed and puffed for two months to get myself in training” for what she has said was “one of the best days of my life,” a visit with the famous Rwanda mountain primates that were the basis of the 1988 film “Gorillas in the Mist.” Her stamina work at that time didn’t do much for her, she recalls in an interview. “I almost died climbing to find them.” Despite her work, “what I failed to take into account was the altitude. It just did me in. Luckily, there was a porter or a guide who held my hand and basically made sure I didn’t quit or die.”
Stahl recently attempted the feat again for the CBS newsmagazine and managed to find the gorillas and get down the slopes.
