Simon McQuoid’s 2021 feature directorial debut with the martial arts fantasy film Mortal Kombat has certainly created a splash among fans but it was far from having an impressive box office gross. Still, New Line Cinema alongside Atomic Monster and Broken Road Productions is bringing a sequel to the first movie with Warner Brothers distributing the movie.
Sisi Stringer as Mileena in Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat 2 hype is quite promising as the movie will bring back the essence of the action-adventure fighting video game series, Mortal Kombat. However, fans have one subtle demand for the studio asking the makers not to repeat one critical mistake in the sequel of the action movie.
Mortal Kombat 2 Will Be “Way Bigger” Hiroyuki Sanada in Mortal Kombat
The preparation of the movie following the announcement has been long, perhaps, this time Warner Brothers are expecting more appealing sequences embedded into the narrative.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow gets 2026 release date, with Mortal Kombat 2 hitting theaters next year
Warner Bros. has announced the official release date for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with the Dcu movie set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. Additionally, the studio unveiled release dates for several of its other big movies, including Mortal Kombat 2, which will hit theaters on October 24, 2025.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will star Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) in the title role, with the film set to be scripted by Ana Nogueira and based on the Tom King comic series of the same name. Craig Gillespie (Cruella) is expected to direct the movie, but DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has teased that this version of Supergirl will be different. “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone...

DC Studios is wasting no time in setting a release date for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow now that the movie has found its director.
The high-profile movie will fly into cinemas on June 26, 2026, DC and Warner Bros. announced Tuesday. It is the second film to receive a release date since James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought in to overhaul DC under the new banner DC Studios. The first was Superman, which Gunn is currently shooting for a July 2025 release date.
Flimmaker Craig Gillespie was tapped by Gunn and Safran to shepherd Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon). She’ll play Superman’s Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. The feature film, from a script by Ana Nogueira, is inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic, and will depart from the earnest take on the character seen on the CW Supergirl series.

Video game adaptations have been a popular genre in Hollywood for years, offering captivating stories with built-in fan bases. While they can be well-received, achieving success with these adaptations can be challenging. Despite this, recent hits like Pedro Pascal’s The Last of Us and Jonathan Nolan’s Fallout, starring Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins, have garnered praise. However, these are just the recent examples of the acclaimed adaptations in the genre.

After getting Peacemaker last month, Mortal Kombat 1 fans will see the return of fan favourite Ermac this month. For those who have Early Access as a Kombat Pack owner, Ermac joins the roster on April 16, with the full release on April 23. The new gameplay trailer gives fans a taste of what to expect from the telekinetic ninja, as well as his painful-looking fatality.
Joining Ermac in the trailer is Mavado. Last seen in Mortal Kombat X, Mavado joins the Mortal Kombat 1 roster as a Kameo fighter later in May.
In keeping with the established timeline we all know, Ermac is a collection of souls bound together by Quan Chi’s dark magic that are intended to function as a group mind. But that spell is temporarily undone when Ermac is defeated by Mileena and the mind of King Jerrod, deceased ruler of Outworld and one of the souls in Ermac’s collection,...

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, which recently wrapped production after a bumpy ride through the year of the strikes. This film will be bringing popular video game character Johnny Cage to the screen, with Karl Urban of Dredd, Star Trek, and The Boys taking on the role. Despite Urban’s established awesomeness, he was an unexpected choice for Johnny Cage, and there are some fans who have let it be known that they would have chosen someone else to play the part. We’ll have to wait and see how it turned out, but one thing we know right now is that Urban had a great time working on the movie, calling it “most action packed fun I’ve ever had on a film!”

Karl Urban marked the end of filming on Simon McQuoid‘s upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 on his Instagram, calling it “the most action packed fun I’ve ever had” on a film. Urban, who plays Johnny Cage in the follow-up to the 2021 film, also took the opportunity to show himself sans beard, which he’ll no doubt be growing back for The Boys, which will be returning for Season 4 later this year.
We’ve not seen a picture yet of Urban as everyone’s favourite action movie star, though MK2 producer Todd Garner had given us a peek of what to expect a few weeks back. Garner had taken to X last week to announce that filming had wrapped for the film, which according to Garner, won’t have a trailer out just yet.

It’s been two years since the release of the live action Mortal Kombat reboot, and a sequel is on the way soon. Filming on Mortal Kombat 2 actually kicked off earlier this summer, you may recall, but it didn’t last long due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes going on at the time. But have no fear, because production on the movie sequel gets back underway real soon.
Responding to a report this week that suggested Mortal Kombat 2 will begin filming in early 2024, producer Todd Garner notes on Twitter that it’s actually kicking off even sooner.

In one of its first development moves since the end of the writers strike, New Line has hired Blair Butler to write Occupant, the adaptation of a short story by Victor Sweetser.
Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind the critically adored 2022 horror movie Barbarian, is producing the supernatural thriller with frequent collaborator Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon and Scott Glassgold of Ground Control — the latter specializes in the horror short-story adaptation business — are also producing, as is John Poliquin.
The project was the subject of a heated bidding war in February with New Line, the Warner Bros. division that dominates the studio horror space, winning it with a six-figure outright buy.

Producer James Wan revealed last night on Ig that filming is officially underway on Mortal Kombat 2, which has Simon McQuoid returning to the director’s seat from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater (“The Exorcist,” “Moon Knight”).
Martyn Ford (“The Sandman”), Desmond Chiam (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”), Ana Thu Nguyen (Suka) and Damon Herriman (House of Wax, The Nightingale) signed on a few weeks ago to play Shao Kahn, Edenian King Jerrod, Queen Sindel, and Netherrealm demon Quan Chi respectively.
It’s interesting to note that Herriman previously voiced the role of Kabal in the 2021 film.
Newcomers to the sequel also include Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.
Plot details remain scarce for the sequel, though the new cast additions continue to signal a bigger, bloodier affair packed with fatalities.

Johnny Cage is an action movie star and martial artist who first appeared in the original Mortal Kombat game released in 1992. The character didn’t appear in the recent Mortal Kombat movie, but a post-credit scene teased that he would be on his way. It was announced earlier this year that Karl Urban was in talks to play Johnny Cage. I’m excited to see the actor in costume for the first time, but I have no doubt that he’s going to knock the role out of the park.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is returning to the helm for the sequel that we’ll refer to as Mortal Kombat 2 until someone tells us otherwise. Filming on this follow-up is expected to begin soon (unless the writers strike causes a delay), and over the last month and a half McQuoid has been steadily building up his cast. The Boys star Karl Urban has been cast to play Johnny Cage; Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is set to play Princess Kitana; and Tati Gabrielle (You) is taking on the role of Jade, the friend and bodyguard of Princess Kitana. Now Deadline reports that four more actors have joined the cast, filling the roles of Outworld emperor Shao Kahn, Kahn’s wife Queen Sindel, Netherrealm demon Quan Chi, and Jerrod, who was the King of Edenia (and married to Sindel) until Edenia’s warriors lost in the Mortal Kombat tournament.

It’s interesting to note that Herriman previously voiced the role of Kabal in the 2021 film.
Plot details remain scarce for the sequel, though the new cast additions continue to signal a bigger, bloodier affair packed with fatalities.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actress Adeline Rudolph is going from Riverdale to Outworld for New Line‘s Mortal Kombat 2. Rudolph is the second Chilling Adventures cast member to sign on for the Mortal Kombat sequel after Tati Gabrielle announced she’s in talks to play Jade in the follow-up to director Simon McQuoid’s 2021 smash. McQuoid directs the sequel, featuring Karl Urban as the fast-talking Hollywood misfit fighter Johnny Cage.
Written by Jeremy Slater, Mortal Kombat 2 continues the story established in the McQuoid reboot, focusing on an eclectic group of fighters pulled into a contest of champions for the fate of Earthrealm against the sinister forces of Outworld. New Line’s Mortal Kombat was released at the onset of the pandemic in theaters and on HBO Max, becoming one of the streaming platform’s most significant hits.

“Mortal Kombat 2” will follow the example of its 2021 hit predecessor and film in Australia. But production will relocate to Gold Coast, Queensland, from Adelaide in South Australia.
The New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures title is based on the iconic video game by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Filming will begin at Village Roadshow Studios from June.
“Mortal Kombat 2” is written by Jeremy Slater and will again be directed by Australian Simon McQuoid. The film will be produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Todd Garner’s Broken Road Productions.
The production was lured by the Queensland Government via Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy. It will also be eligible for the Australian federal government’s recently-revised offset scheme.
“With an estimated local spend of more than $68 million, Mortal Kombat 2 is a heavy hitter for the state’s economy, creating at least 560 jobs for Queensland cast and crew,...

A short amount of internet research does not reveal, sadly, a canonical reason why "Mortal Kombat" is spelled with a "K." Midway's "Mortal Kombat" first hit arcades in 1992, and was notable for its blood and gore and for its graphics. "Mortal Kombat" incorporated photographs of actual actors in colorful outfits and in fight poses who were then animated into the game. Unlike its more cartoonish competitor "Street Fighter," "Mortal Kombat" had an edge.
Over the years, the premise of "Mortal Kombat" became complicated to the point of risibility. It seems a fighting tournament is held every X number of years, and people from across multiple dimensions, including robots and demons, gather to compete. The winner will receive ultimate power or something. It doesn't really matter. The point is getting strange, colorful, violent characters in an area so that we may witness one forcibly removing the spine from the other.

Lewis Tan is the face of a big ongoing franchise, playing Mma fighter turned world-saving hero in "Mortal Kombat," which currently has a sequel in the works. It turns out that Tan very nearly landed another huge gig around the same time: Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Indeed, had things gone another way, it could be Tan suiting up as Shang-Chi and not Simu Liu. And it sounds very much like Tan was in the running right until the very end.
Tan spoke about the experience to Entertainment Tonight around the time that 2021's "Mortal Kombat" was coming out. He explained what it was like landing the role of Cole Young, a character created specifically for the movie. Here's what he had to say about it:
"That was a crazy moment. I had just gotten back from Japan. I just lost a crazy job - a really, really high-caliber level job.

There are a few nerdy actors whose attachments to geeky properties suddenly make them much more exciting because fans know that the person involved will care as much as they do. Karl Urban ("The Boys") is one such actor because he loves comic books, video games, and all of the other geeky things that make us happy. I mean, this is the man who refused to move his mouth from a painful-looking grimace or remove his helmet for "Dredd," so he clearly cares. Now it looks like Urban is going to be attached to another big geeky franchise, as he is reportedly in final talks to play Johnny Cage in the upcoming "Mortal Kombat 2," according to The Wrap. There hasn't been too much news about the sequel to the 2021 video game movie that received mixed reviews (you can read ours here) but felt like it could go in an interesting direction with follow-up entries.

A sequel to the Mortal Kombat movie from 2021 is on the way, and The Wrap reports tonight that Karl Urban (“The Boys”) is in final talks to join the cast as Johnny Cage.
The Wrap reminds, “Johnny Cage was introduced in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game in 1992. Johnny Cage is depicted as an action movie star with an extensive martial arts background. He is often characterized as a swashbuckling, Hollywood fighting movie star who places great importance on his image and consistently behaves in a cool manner.”
The star of Amazon’s hit series “The Boys,” Karl Urban turns 50 years old next month, so this particular take on the classic Mortal Kombat character is sure to be different than expected. Many fans had been lobbying for WWE superstar The Miz to play Cage in the upcoming sequel, but Urban’s casting will bring a whole new facet to the character.

The plot of the film, which is in early development, is being kept under wraps, though Riley Sager’s book is centered on a young woman, Maggie, whose family fled their Victorian home 25 years earlier in an event that inspired her father to pen a best-selling nonfiction book claiming they experienced a haunting. Maggie, now an adult, doesn’t remember those events and doesn’t believe her father’s book. But when she inherits the old family home after her father’s death, she starts to question if there’s more to the house than she believed.

New Line Cinema is moving forward with a “Mortal Kombat” sequel, with the 2021 film’s director Simon McQuoid set to return, sources tell TheWrap.
The previous film was a new adaptation of the popular video game franchise that offered a grittier, more violent take on the material than the 1990s films. It was released in April of 2021 both in theaters and on HBO Max, and was an early pandemic hit for distributor Warner Bros., ranking as one of the top feature titles on HBO Max since the streaming service debuted.
Jeremy Slater is writing the screenplay for the sequel, and news of his involvement was first revealed in January.
“Mortal Kombat” marked McQuoid’s feature directorial debut, and the film ended with a clear path forward for the franchise as the titular challenge does not occur within the events of the first movie. A post-credits scene also teased the inclusion...
