Film: "The Monuments Men"; Cast: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, Cate Blanchett and Dimitri Leonidas; Director: George Clooney; Rating: **
After the recent "Lone Survivor" and "RoboCop", here is another film that throws hues of American glorification. This time, in a war movie that includes a treasure hunt, "The Monumental Men" is the sympathetic account of the Us-led effort to save and preserve the treasures looted by the Nazis, who are bent on destroying them as they retreat in defeat.
Based on a true story and adapted from the bestselling book by Robert M. Edsel, the film reveals the factual adventures of a group of art historians, architects and artists.

As jaunty as Jean Dujardin’s beret, but in a sincere, old-fashioned kind of way. It could almost have been rediscovered from the 1940s… I’m “biast” (pro): love Clooney as an actor and a filmmaker; love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I try to avoid hearing too much of other critics’ reactions to a film before I’ve seen it, but there was no avoiding the barrage of disappointment that came hurling over Twitter last week, as so many of my North American colleagues responded to The Monuments Men with a resounding “meh.” This was a disappointment to me, because I’d been so looking forward to this movie.
Well, now that I’ve seen it, I don’t know what the hell they’re all talking about, because this movie is fantastic.

According to the latest aggregation of opinions on Rotten Tomatoes, George Cloone's "The Monuments Men" hasn’t fared very well with most of my critical brethren. But I find myself inclined to give it an appreciative thumb’s up, if not a full-throated roar of approval. And not just because, as a minor-league history buff, I am reflexively fascinated by accounts of efforts to retrieve art masterpieces plundered by Adolf Hitler's minions during World War II.Clooney's movie -- which really makes me want to take another look at the documentaries "The Rape of Europa" and "The Architecture of Doom" -- is an intelligent and entertaining mix of stranger-than-fiction fact and respectfully plausible invention, adapted by Clooney and co-scriptwriter Grant Heslov from Robert M. Edsel’s "The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, And the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History." It’s a tale of unlikely heroes -- art experts,...

Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Lego Movie" started its box office campaign in stellar fashion with an estimated $69 million debut from 3,775 theaters. The film directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller averaged a hefty $18,307 per theater, with a voice cast including Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, Alison Brie, Nick Offerman, Morgan Freeman, Will Arnett and Jason Sand. This is now the largest opener of the year, and according to Rentrak, the biggest PG-rated February opener of all time, the biggest animated opener in February ever, the largest opening for Warner Bros. ever in February as well as being the biggest opener for an animated Warner Bros. release. In second, Sony's "The Monuments Men" wasn't disgraced with its $22.7 million debut either, pulling in an average of $7,363 from 3,083 theaters. George Clooney directs, as well as starring with Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and Bob Balaban.

Tale of Nazi art theft fails to spark to life in George Clooney’s sprawling World War II drama "The Monuments Men." The greatest art theft in the history of mankind unfolds during the last, good war. Really, how can this tale not be an extraordinary Hollywood movie? Imagine walking into a great museum and seeing mostly empty frames instead of masterpieces. That’s essentially the story of The Monuments Men, the smart but surprisingly sparkless World War II adventure from actor/director George Clooney. Clooney, deservedly so, gets added points for adapting Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter’s historical novel, working with co-writer and frequent collaborator Grant Heslov, about a team of American and British museum directors, curators and art historians racing to stop the theft and destruction of priceless works of art stolen by the Nazis during World War II.

As the trailers and post-holiday pushback release suggested, George Clooney's "The Monuments Men" is dead on arrival. What went wrong? As a writer-director, Clooney is hit-or-miss. He's in love with old-fashioned Hollywood genres like the Cold War spy thriller comedy ("Confessions of a Dangerous Mind") or period sports romance ("Leatherheads") that would be a challenge for any director to pull off. They were both duds. On the other hand, black-and-white newsroom drama "Good Night, and Good Luck" earned six Academy Award nominations, and "Ides of March" scored another for scribe Beau Willamon, who went on to write "House of Cards." Unfortunately, "Monuments Men," adapted from Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter's book by Clooney and his co-producer Grant Heslov, is one of Clooney's more flat-footed efforts. It means to be a John Frankenheimer wartime thriller with soldiers in danger trying to rescue the world's great works of art from the Nazis--art-lover Hitler has.

During the junket for the new film The Monuments Men, we had the rare treat to speak to the author of the book on which the film is based. Robert M. This story first appeared in the Feb. 7 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Adapted from Robert M. Edsel's best-seller The Monuments Men, the George Clooney-directed film -- and Berlinale Special Screening -- of the same name chronicles what has been called one of the world's greatest treasure hunts. It also could be one of the most ambitious attempts at art fakery for art's sake. Clooney, Matt Damon, John Goodman and Bill Murray star as members of World War II's Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives unit, which was comprised of museum directors, architects, sculptors, curators and art historians. Check out the sneak peek clip from this Thursday night’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” featuring the cast of director/actor George Clooney’s new film, The Monuments Men, including Clooney, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Bob Balaban, Cate Blanchett, and even Kimmel’s arch-enemy, Matt Damon.
The episode also includes a new edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live’s” famed “Mean Tweets” segment, featuring all six members of “The Monuments Men” cast reading horrible comments from social media about themselves.
5-time Oscar nominee Alexandre Desplat (The King’S Speech, Argo) composed the score for the film. As with many of his previous works, Desplat’s music takes the viewer on an exciting journey in the same way Frank De Vol did with The Dirty Dozen and Elmer Bernstein did in The Great Escape. He totally captures the rousing themes of an old-time, big Hollywood World War II movie.

Art may not be more important than human lives. But on the list of things that mean something to human lives, across centuries, it ranks pretty high. That's what's so compelling about the story of the Monuments Men, a group of people from 13 nations who volunteered to protect cultural treasures from destruction during World War II. Most of us like to think we'd stride into a combat zone to save a distressed child. But would we do the same for a Michelangelo Madonna?
You can see why George Clooney, director and star of The Monuments Men, would be attracted to these comparatively unheralded heroes, particularly as Robert M. Edsel (with Bret Witter) presents them in his gloriously readable 2009 book of the same name. Edsel focuses on the eight men, among them museu...

George Clooney’s anticipated The Monuments Men will finally be heading into cinemas this month, arriving in cinemas stateside this coming Friday.
The film, which was pushed from its original Oscar-primed release slot last year, has one of Clooney’s greatest ensemble casts yet, and promises to be a lot of fun amongst the dramatic nature of the true story.
With just days to go before heads into theatres, Sony will be giving their ad campaign a big push by launching a promo in tonight’s Super Bowl, releasing the Big Game Spot a little early online.

This whole "untold" story thing studios are doing in trailers nowadays has to stop. First The Legend of Hercules was an untold story even though the story of Zeus' son has been told for hundreds of years. Then it was The Monuments Men based on a book where the story was very much told by Robert M. Edsel. Now comes the Super Bowl trailer for Darren Aronofsky's Noah in which it claims the story of Noah's Ark is... get this... untold. Uh, untold by whomc Unborn childrenc Perhaps this is a way for Paramount to skirt agitation over the differences Aronofsky, Ari Handel and John Logan's (Gladiator, Hugo) adaptation has when compared to the Biblical story from which it is based. I assume the Biblical story is the one that's been told... This one, completely untold. Can't wait to see what new facts have been dug up for this one.

It's rare when a film adaptation lives up the book it was based on so with that in mind I have compiled a list of 40 books that have been adapted for the big screen that we can expect to see in theaters this year. This includes two books from Gillian Flynn, young adult adaptations of work by Veronica Roth, Suzanne Collins and James Dashner, a short story from Dennis Lehane, a Nick Hornby adaptation, and an adaptation written by Nick Hornby, a new John le Carre adaptation and a prequel to the stories written by Tom Clancy as well as a couple comics and graphic novel adaptations from the likes of Frank Miller and Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Alexander O. Smith. I've added everything I could think of and while I'm sure I missed a few, please forgive me and hopefully you'll find something that appeals to your taste on the list.

Following a clever newsreel trailer towards the end of last year, the February release of The Monuments Men gets some more hype in the form of a new featurette with director George Clooney and his cast talking about the mission of the real-life, aged military task force. Matt Damon and Jean Dujardin (with his debonair French accent) are among the cast members talking about the film. There's some new footage within the featurette as well, and while the film's Oscar chances are less likely with this early of a release in the year, it's still one of my 14 Most Anticipated Films of 2014. Hopefully the wait will be worth it. Watch! George Clooney’s The Monuments Men was long pegged as a frontrunner for the awards season we’re currently in the midst of, and whilst its delayed release puts it out of the running for the time being, the anticipation surrounding it hasn’t changed a bit.
Clooney was last seen behind the camera back in 2011 with the brilliant The Ides of March, and we’re all looking forward to his follow-up. With just under a month to go before its stateside release, Fox has released a new featurette, in which Clooney describes the task these men undertook as the biggest treasure hunt of all time.

"Monuments Men are not selected for their might, but rather, their minds." Though The Monuments Men originally should have been theaters this Oscar season, it's not arriving until February 2014. Thankfully, that's not too far away, and to remind people that the film from director George Clooney (who also stars in the film) is still coming, Sony Pictures has revealed a trailer in the form of a newsreel that used to precede films decades ago. It's immensely difficult to strike the balance between earnest and funny when it comes to movies about World War II, but if anyone can, it's probably our man George Clooney.
Clooney, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay, creates a funny "Ocean's Eleven"-style heist vibe as an art conservationist who enlists a group of international experts to save art from Hitler's clutches. Roosevelt himself has given the marching orders for the platoon to seek out the irreplaceable artworks stolen by Nazi goons from museums across Europe.
This gang includes Matt Damon (naturally), John Goodman, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, and Cate Blanchett, who each have their own specialty and stake in getting to the most precious works of art before they go into Hitler's archives or are destroyed.
Of course, there are some kooky moments, like when Damon's character finds himself standing on an unexploded land mine, or when...

When the second trailer for George Clooney’s anticipated The Monuments Men landed last month, the film was still poised to be a big contender in the upcoming Oscar race.
A lot has changed in the past few weeks, however, with Clooney and Sony opting to push the film’s release date out of Academy eligibility, and into February next year. And whilst it doesn’t reveal much more than the original domestic poster across the Atlantic, Fox – the film’s UK distributor – have launched the new UK Quad, which gives a little more visibility to Cate Blanchett and her rather stunning blue dress.

Catch the second poster for George Clooney's The Monuments Men, based on the Robert M. Edsel book "The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Hunt in History." For those who haven't heard, the film was shifted from mid-December opening to February 7th next year, dropping out of Oscar contention for this year as it just wasn't ready. Clooney leads the cast of Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and Bob Balaban. Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action-thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by Fdr with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. Way back in 2009, probably before most of you were born, there was a film called Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese. It was being looked at as a potential Oscar vehicle, but only a couple months before its expected October 2009 release, it was bumped to February 19. It would ultimately go on to be nominated for zero Oscars, but at the same time it became Scorsese's second highest grossing film ever, second only to The Departed, which did pretty well at the Oscars. I mention this only because we have a similar scenario playing out this year as Sony bumped George Clooney's The Monuments Men as it wasn't quite ready in terms of finishing touches such as score and visual effects, from a December release date now to a confirmed February 7, 2014 release. The move positions the film opposite Warner's The Lego Movie and the bomb-waiting-to-happen remake of RoboCop.

Sony's shifted George Clooney-directed The Monuments Men out of a hot December 18th spot into February 7th, 2014 after Clooney's announcement two days ago that the film won't be ready for the holiday spot, leaving Sony dropping its marketing the film as an Oscar contender, reports Variety. Also with Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and Bob Balaban, The Monuments Men is based on Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter's book "The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Hunt in History," adapted for the screen by Smokehouse partners Grant Heslov and Clooney. One goes in and another is on its way out. Today we received word Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street would hit theaters on Christmas Day, delayed slightly from its previous November 15 date and now, tonight, a bit of a bombshell has dropped as the Los Angeles Times reports George Clooney's The Monuments Men won't be able to make its December 18 release date and will be delayed to 2014. The reasons given include the visual effects and it seems Alexandre Desplat has not yet recorded the score. Speaking with the Los Angeles Times Clooney said, "We just didn't have enough time. If any of the effects looked cheesy, the whole movie would look cheesy. We simply don't have enough people to work enough hours to finish it." For anyone wondering about the film's lost potential in the Oscar race, Clooney added, "Oscar attention was never his goal for the film.

This year's Oscar race just got smaller, but not in the way we thought it would: Just a day after confirming that the film everyone thought would move to 2014 -- Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" -- would indeed be out by Christmas, The Los Angeles Times has broke the news that George Clooney's "Monuments Men" will not be ready by year's end. The story says that the film -- which was scheduled to open December 18th — will now will be released by Sony Pictures in early 2014. I suppose everyone has to have their war movie, and if you’re George Clooney, you can get a hell of a cast for The Monuments Men.
Hitting December 18th, this one is already getting a lot of award buzz, and if Clooney and the rest of the cast aren’t enough, you’ve also got a war movie that’s actually about an artistic cause, and that opens the door for scenes with Bill Murray and John Goodman struggling to get through an obstacle course. That’s just feel good gold.
For some, this is the first film in a while that billed itself as “based on a true story,” that didn’t cause you to roll your eyes, and this one isn’t just about the exploits of various art historians suddenly thrown into war, it’s about the fact that they needed to be in the first place.

There have been so many World War II movies that when a genuinely new and surprising story out of the war comes along, it's kind of impossible not to get jazzed. Such is the case with "The Monuments Men," written by, produced, and starring some dude name George Clooney (who can currently be seen in Alfonso Cuaron's space-set masterpiece "Gravity")
"The Monuments Men," which is based on a true story (recounted in a book of the same name by Robert M. Edsel), chronicles the efforts of a small team of artists and historians who were tasked with retrieving priceless stolen works of art from the Nazis during the waning days of World War II. As Clooney intones over the opening narration: "While we must and will win this war, we must remember the high price that will be paid if the foundation of modern society is destroyed." That's art for you.

A-listers and Oscar winners star in this second trailer for The Monuments Men.
Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by Fdr with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.
A vast improvement over the original teaser trailer. Will the film be among the Best Picture nominees in the upcoming Oscar race? We’ll find out when the nominations are announced on Thursday, January 16, 2014.
However this year’s Award Season pans out, The Monuments Men, along with it’s star-studded cast, is akin to the old-Hollywood WWII movies The Dirty Dozen, Guns Of Navarone, and The Longest Day – all of which were big commercial successes and Academy Award winners.

"We have been tasked to find and protect art that the Nazis have stolen." Following the promising teaser trailer earlier this year, the first full theatrical trailer for George Clooney's historical drama The Monuments Men has arrived, and you can be damn sure this will be a big Oscar contender. However, the tone of the first half of this trailer seems clumsy, with the music not really allowing for the comedy to land very well. There's a sense of urgency in the trailer, even in parts where it's not necessary. Thankfully, the second half redeems it and shows off just how fantastic this film seems to be and the Academy will love it. Here's the new trailer for George Clooney's The Monuments Men, originally from Yahoo: The Monuments Men is directed by George Clooney (Good Night and Good Luck, The Ides of March) who co-wrote the script with his producing partner Grant Heslov.

The conversation until now has positioned George Clooney's "Monuments Men" as an "Ocean's Eleven"-esque WWII caper, but not a serious Oscar contender. But that talk will likely change with the arrival of the newest trailer for the film, one that still has the lighter tone of the first teaser, but is imbued with some serious elements. Clooney pulls triple duty here, co-writing, starring and directing, alongside a bunch of his pals old and new—Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and Cate Blanchett—in this adaptation of Robert M. Now this is how you do a poster for a big Hollywood movie with a huge A-list cast. With names and faces prominently front and center, the poster is a throwback to a time when Tinseltown used to promote their films with larger-than-life stars splashed all over it. You can almost see “In Cinemascope” somewhere at the bottom.
I do like that this first poster has a Guns Of Navarone vibe to it. Should prove interesting to see how Clooney’s film does this Awards Season. McN’s Gurus of Gold presently has it tied for 10th place in their Pre-Fall-Fest Edition.

Following the stellar first trailer for the pseudo-Ocean's 11 in World War II, the first poster for George Clooney's new historical drama The Monuments Men is here. It's not the most compelling poster for a film, but it certainly uses the power of the impressive cast to get audiences interested. It's hard to find a better cast than George Clooney, Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, Cate Blanchett and more. We just wish there was a little more indication of what this film was about on the poster. It could've easily featured some of the art these soldiers are tracking down, but there's just a stripe. Here's the first poster for George Clooney's The Monuments Men from Imp Awards: The Monuments Men is directed by George Clooney (Good Night and Good Luck, The Ides of March) who co-wrote the script with his producing partner Grant Heslov.

At long last, this Friday sees the American release of The World’s End, my last must-see film of the summer. And with the end of August less than two weeks away, it’s high time we start looking ahead to the movies coming our way in the fall and winter. In that spirit, this week’s Trailer Trashin’ column looks at what could be one of the big films of the Christmas season, George Clooney’s World War II drama The Monuments Men.
Premise: In a race against time, a crew of art historians and museum curators unite to recover renowned works of art stolen by the Nazis before Hitler’s forces destroy them.
My take: If you added up the running times of all the films that have been made about World War II, I think it would end up being longer than the amount of the actual war lasted.
