Charlie turned up, scratched some records, and has now been given his marching orders by Netflix.
Variety reports today that the Idris Elba-fronted music drama, Turn Up Charlie, has been canned after just one season. The comedy, which featured Elba as a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, managed to carve out a loyal audience after it premiered on Netflix last year. Be that as it may, it looks like Turn Up Charlie is less of a DJ sensation and more of a one-hit-wonder.
Idris Elba originally created the series alongside Gary Reich, and delivered a pretty entertaining performance as the eponymous Charlie, whose unlikely friendship with problem-child Sara became the beating heart of the show.
Per Netflix:
Turn Up Charlie will not return for a second season. We’re especially grateful to star and executive producer Idris Elba, who turned his passion for DJing into a witty, heart-warming comedy series.

Idris Elba is squashing any lingering hopes that he’ll one day play James Bond by fulfilling his dreams to be a DJ.
Rather than swigging martinis and driving an Aston Martin, People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” now stars in new Netflix comedy series, “Turn Up Charlie,” as a struggling British DJ trying to get his break in the music business.
In the new trailer that dropped Thursday, we see Charlie hitting the decks, hitting the floor as he falls out of bed with a mystery woman, and almost hitting rockbottom as he struggles to pay the bills. Luckily, he also lands a job offer — as a nanny for his best friend’s wild 11-year-old daughter.

Idris Elba is famously handsome. Even so, the 45-year-old actor is set to portray Quasimodo - yes, of The Hunchback of Notre Dame fame - in an upcoming film for Netflix. Elba will not only star as the titular character, but will also direct and produce the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In case you happened to miss the acclaimed 1996 Disney adaptation, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is centered on an ostracized bell-ringer who falls for a street dancer named Esmeralda, all the while living under the thumb of a ruthless archdeacon. Oh, and there are songs! The upcoming modern adaptation will reportedly be a "sonic and musical experience," with Elba even producing original music. (Fun fact: Elba was a DJ long before he got into acting.)
