February 3, 1959 has become one of the most mythic days in rock 'n' roll history. It's the day the 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza 35 carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson crashed in an Iowa cornfield. To many, it's simply the day the music died. Buddy Holly was touring with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, on a jaunt that was scheduled to hit 25 Midwestern cities in three weeks. Angered by rough bus tours that left band members sick with the flu and one hospitalized with frostbite, Holly decided to charter a plane from Iowa to Minnesota. The official...

Judy Collins circa 1963 performs in Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation.
The 2012 music-filled documentary film Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation combines talking heads with rare archival footage and new live performances to tell a story about a community that created a generation-defining music.
Between 1961-1973, many musicians in New York’s Greenwich Village banded together to sing about the radical social upheaval of the time. As these new singers emerged, Greenwich blossomed as a place that promoted a better future. Their music challenged the status quo by singing about taboo subjects – fighting for civil liberties, protesting the Vietnam War, and holding governments accountable for their actions.
Featuring poignant interviews with Pete Seeger, Kris Kristofferson, Don McLean, Peter Yarrow, Arlo Guthrie, Lucy and Carly Simon, Tom Chapin and Judy Collins, among dozens of other music luminaries, Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation...

Few artists are as utterly engaging on stage as Josh Groban. For real. When the 32 year-old singer stepped into the spotlight at Chicago's United Center Sunday night for a concert in the round, it was not just his celebrated vibrato that ingratiated thousands of fans. As it turns out, the guy is...well, endearingly charming and funny. As if the obvious mind-bending vocals weren't enough, Groban thoroughly delighted the crowd with his self-effacing humor and spontaneous wit as he moved through his two-hour set like a hot knife through butter. Backed up by a world-class band that came with all the strings and horns one would expect, Groban opened with his current single "Brave" and "False Alarms" off his latest album titled All That Echoes. Groban's powerful baritone bonanza continued, featuring a vocal journey of newer and older songs from an impressive catalog plucked from the artist's six studio albums.

When Gunnar and the Grizzly Boys posted their latest music video on Youtube, the country band claimed it had friends at Google who "bent the rules to make this video possible."
However, Reddit posters were quick to point out Gunnar and his Grizzly Boys could not actually have ambushed a Google Street View car.
The giveaway? Well, for starters, the band member's faces were not blurred out to protect their privacy in typical Google Street View fashion.
The next tip-off was the name of the Youtube account where the music video was posted: RobBlissCreative.
As one Reddit user notes, Rob Bliss is fairly well known for his involvement in viral marketing ideas. The Michigan native launched his own marketing company in November after splitting from Status Creative, a firm he created in 2011 with Jeff Barrett and Scott Erickson. ABC Family "10 Things I Hate About You" stars Nicholas Braun and Kyle Kaplan use Gotye's hit "Somebody I Used to Know" to show how you just can't ignore an annoying song. The actors instead fall prey to the hit in the Youtube video "That Gotye Song".
They talk for over a minute about how they hate the song and how much it is played on the radio, but end up singing along to the catchy tune. Song parodies are popular on Youtube with comedian Weird Al Yankovic famous for his takes on Coolio, Lady Gaga, and Don McLean's hits.
Videos often parody annoying or overplayed songs. To some, Gotye's 2011 hit "Somebody That I Used to Know" fits this category. The song claimed the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and is nominated for two Teen Choice Awards -- "Choice Rock Song" and "Choice Break-Up Song...

It's Hump Day, so we've collected 30 songs we've been listening to for your perusal. Compiled by HuffPost Entertainment's editors, the list features everyone from Kelly Clarkson to N.O.R.E. We tried to make a list that was uncomplicated and honest, resisting the "editor" urge to present a bunch of obscure throwbacks and little-known "up and comers." Take a listen in the Spotify playlist below and see our song-by-song explanations (and, in some cases, excuses) for the 30 songs we're feeling at the moment.
Editor Key: Km is Kia Makarechi, Cb is Crystal Bell and Cr is Christopher Rosen. Now listen and judge away.

2. Tanlines - All of Me

It’s been 13 years since Jason Biggs was first caught red-handed and in flagrante delicious with his mom’s apple pie, and that’s pretty much exactly the right amount of time for us to get nostalgic about it. At least, that’s the hope of the producers of American Reunion, which brings the whole crew together for another go-round, and where even the wacky sexual exploits seem to be done with a bit of wistful remembrance of days gone by, like Proust (if instead of eating the madeleine, he had intercourse with it).

On what would have been the legendary singer's 75th birthday (Sept. 7), Buddy Holly finally received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The musician, who recorded such hits as "Peggy Sue" and "That'll be the Day," was a driving influence in 1950s rock music. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was named #13 on Rolling Stone magazine's "Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time."
Holly was just 22 years old when he was killed in the same plane crash that took the life of Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. Their deaths were later called "The Day the Music Died" in the Don McLean song "American Pie."
The unveiling of the star was attended by his widow Maria Elena Santiago, Phil Everly from the Everly brothers and Gary Busey, who portrayed the singer in "The Buddy Holly Story."
Here's a video to remember him on this day.

At the Minneapolis, Minn., stop on their record-shattering "360 Tour," U2 dedicated “Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” to the late Amy Winehouse, who passed away Saturday at the age of 27. "We wrote this next song for Michael Hutchence, but you will understand tonight if we play it for Amy Winehouse,” Bono said before playing the song.
“Stuck In A Moment” was written for Hutchence, the lead singer of Inxs who committed suicide in 1997. The singer was a close friend of the members of U2.
The gesture is the latest of many that have flooded in since Winehouse’s passing. On Saturday night, just hours after the news broke, M.I.A. released the demo “27” on her Soundcloud in the “Back to Black” singer’s honor. “I recorded this song B4 vickileekx and never put it out,” M.I.A. said on Twitter. “It's a unfinished demo.

It is the anniversary of the day Don McLean dubbed ‘The Day the Music Died’, in his world famous song American Pie. The sudden loss of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P ‘The Big Bopper’ Richardson in 1959 was catastrophic, and each became immortalised in film keeping their music alive and forever young.
Steve Rash’s The Buddy Holly Story, 1978, with Gary Busey received wide acclaim and condemnation alike and the 1987 La Bamba starring Lou Diamond Phillips, was a timely reminder to all of us eighties kids of the wonder of the music that was created by those legends and which affected rock and roll from the 1950’s onwards; from Little Richard, Bob Dylan to The Beatles and beyond.

Feb. 3 marks the anniversary of the Day the Music Died -- the snowy night when (from left) Buddy Holly, Jp "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens took off in a small plane from Clear Lake, Iowa after playing a gig at the Surf Ballroom. They were headed to the next stop on their Winter Dance Party tour and Holly, sick of the miserable experience on the tour bus, chartered a plane.
The plane crashed in a field about five miles from the airport due to poor weather conditions. In an interesting bit of trivia, Valens and Richardson weren't even supposed to be on the plane. The plane was supposed to be for Holly and his bandmates, but Tommy Allsup flipped a coin with Valens for the last seat and Waylon Jennings (now-famous country artist) gave up his seat to a flu-stricken Richardson.

They say that the best way to secure longevity in pop music is to adapt with the times and always keep people guessing. People always heap praise on Madonna for being able to transition smoothly between the various phases of her career. It's an impressive trick, and one that few artists are truly capable of pulling off. You wouldn't normally associate the Material Girl with "Weird Al" Yankovic, but he is one of the few musicians who has managed to stay on the cutting edge while subtly shifting what he does and adapting to changes in trends (and technology). On this day in 1999, Yankovic released Running With Scissors.
Yankovic was coming off an incredible run of hits in the 1990s, including 1992's Off the Deep End (which featured the classic Nirvana parody "Smells Like Nirvana"), 1993's Alapalooza (an album that contained the hit tune "Jurassic Park") and 1996's Bad Hair...

There was a fantastic episode (among many) of the British TV series "Coupling" where the idea of a "porn buddy" was explored. Floria Sigismondi, a Canadian music video director (for Marilyn Manson, Sigure Ros, White Stripes, etc), knows how to lure the audience in from the get-go: the film starts with skimpily dressed, beautiful blond sisters Marie (Riley Keough) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) exchanging their underwear at a gas station bathroom because Cherie's period has just started. The only alternative to riding all night long in a dirty, unheated bus to his next concert date was a tiny airplane. Shortly after takeoff, however, the plane carrying Buddy Holly, along with Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson, disappeared into a snowy cloud. Holly's torn, mangled body was found a few hours later in a frozen Iowa cornfield a little past midnight on February 3, 1959. I was a 12-year-old kid at the time. For Buddy Holly fans like me, it seemed that all was lost -- a feeling immortalized in Don McLean's classic song. As an artist, Buddy Holly was only with us for 30 months -- between 1957 and...

On Feb. 3, 1959 a plane took off from Clear Lake, Iowa carrying three stars of rock n' roll (from left): Jp "The Big Bopper" Richardson, Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly.
They finished playing a show at the Surf Ballroom and were headed for the next stop on the Winter Dance Party tour. After a miserable experience with a tour bus the day before, Holly chartered a plane, but the plane crashed about five miles from the airport due to poor weather conditions and pilot error.
In a weird bit of fate, Valens and Richardson weren't supposed to be on the plane. It was supposed to be for Holly's band members, but bandmate Tommy Allsup and Valens flipped a coin for who would get to one seat and bandmate (and now-famous country singer) Waylon Jennings gave up his seat for the flu-stricken Richardson.

From the moment I arrived at Sundance, the movie that more or less everyone, including me, wanted to see most was The Runaways -- and not just because it offered the chance to see whether Kristen Stewart, as Joan Jett, could leave her swoony Twilight mopiness behind her and play a rock & roll princess with down-and-dirty spunk. (Verdict: She can.) It's also because the Runaways, a packaged group of choppy-haired teen-glam feline punkettes from L.A. who, in 1976, did for girls playing power chords what the Sex Pistols did for beer-spewing anarchy, may seem cooler now than they did then.

A diverse group of musicians joined a coalition on Tuesday asking that the Obama administration close down the terror suspect camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Taking issue with their music reportedly being blasted at ear-bleeding levels in an attempt to break uncooperative terror suspects, artists including R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle and Billy Bragg announced their support for the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo, according to The Associated Press.
As part of their effort, the National Security Archive in Washington is filing a Freedom of Information Act request in an effort to uncover classified records that detail the use of loud music as an interrogation device. A November 2008 report by the...

Which brand do you think Americans most associate with America? Coca Cola? Google? A Vanity Fair/60 Minutes poll found that almost half of all Americans say Wal-Mart best symbolizes America today, with the mega-retailer notching 48% of the responses in a survey of more 1,000 people. Google and Microsoft came in second and third with 15% and 13%, respectively. The National Football League picked up 6%, while beleaguered and demonized Wall Street bank Goldman Sachs notched 3%, perhaps a nod to Americans’ self-loathing in the midst of the economic crisis. It doesn't come as a surprise that Wal-Mart, with its voracious appetite for growth and ubiquity in American communities, tops the list of most American brands--especially because its “everyday low prices” are a consolation for our recession-era collective limited spending power. More surprising are the brands that are not represented at all. Coca Cola, a symbol of American-style capitalism throughout the Cold War and an aggressive...
