It’s Groundhog Day, a strange little holiday overshadowed by a popular Bill Murray comedy that sees his selfish character become a better person thanks to a bizarre time loop. It’s a fascinating concept that can turn downright sinister within the realm of horror.
So we’re celebrating Groundhog Day by revisiting ten horror and sci-fi time loop movies that bring suspense, terror, and sometimes laughs through messing around with time…
Haunter
From director Vincenzo Natali, Haunter brings a refreshing twist to a haunted house thriller through a time loop. Abigail Breslin stars as Lisa, a teen who slowly comes to realize that she’s a ghost stuck reliving the day she was murdered in 1985 along with her family, on a perpetual loop. Lisa also discovers that she can bend time to communicate with people in other timelines, eventually working with a teen currently living in her home to...

October has been a pretty exciting month: we celebrated our 250th episode of the podcast with Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, then tackled one of Jason Voorhees’ best entries with Friday the 13th Part 2 before getting real serious with Bryan Singer’s Apt Pupil.
We’re closing out the month with a seasonally appropriate film: Rob Zombie‘s 2009 return to the Halloween franchise, Halloween II. Important note of distinction, however, we’re talking about the Unrated Director’s Cut.
In the film, it’s been two years since Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) faced down Michael Myers (Tyler Mane) but she’s still suffering from serious Ptsd. Despite Annie (Danielle Harris) and Sheriff Brackett’s (Brad Dourif) claims that she’s safe, Laurie is spiraling as Halloween approaches.
Not helping matters is Dr. Sam Loomis (Malcolm McDowell), who has written an insensitive new book about the murders. As Michael returns to finish what he began,...

Never meet your heroes, they say ... "Torn Hearts" is about two rising artists in the country music world, Jordan Wilder (Abby Quinn) and Leigh Blackhouse (Alexxis Lemire), meeting the woman who inspired them, the legendary Harper Dutch (Katey Sagal). They drink, they sing, and they even live together. The dream does not match the reality, though, which is one of the themes director Brea Grant explores in her aesthetically poppy but thematically dark horror film.

The multi-talented Brea Grant is an actor, writer, and director, who has starred in several television shows and films like Dexter (2011), Halloween II (2009), and After Midnight (2019). In 2020, she wrote and directed the hilariously macabre 12 Hour Shift, which starred Angela Bettis. Grant’s latest project is the Blumhouse Television and Epix film Torn Hearts, which follows two singers trying to break into the country music scene in Nashville, but to do that they have to become friends with a reclusive country music star.

Keeping things in the family isn’t always easy—just ask the Gallagher Brothers. Blood doesn’t mean anything once fame and fortune enter the fray because outside interests will begin to whisper and divide until the world discovers two halves aren’t quite as good as the whole. That’s not saying Noel’s High Flying Birds or Liam’s Beady Eye are bad. They’ve both created some good music post-break-up, but neither reached the heights Oasis had. The former’s music and latter’s voice built something that could only exist with the two brothers working together. One could presume that some level of jealousy even helped fuel that success as both sought to prove their worth so vehemently that they ultimately exposed their respective animosity instead. At least we still have the music.

Bloody Disgusting’s Torn Hearts review is spoiler-free. The music genre most often explored in horror is fellow outcast rock ‘n roll or metal, but director Brea Grant makes a strong case for country music’s inclusion in the horror space. Torn Hearts combines country’s frequent themes of love and loss with horror’s twisted pursuit of fame, delivering a mean thriller […]

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.

"Which one of you is better?" Blumhouse has revealed an official trailer for a new film titled Torn Hearts, directed by the very talented actress & filmmaker Brea Grant. This is her third feature film so far and she's getting even better with each and every one. "Things are headed south in Torn Hearts as a country music duo in Nashville meet their idol only to find out it isn't quite the dream they imagined....How far would you go for your dreams?" That's the intro. The film follows a country music duo from Nashville who seek out the private mansion of their idol and end up in a twisted series of horrors that force them to confront the limits they'd go for their dreams. The film stars Katey Sagal and Abby Quinn, with Alexxis Lemire, Joshua Leonard, and Shiloh Fernandez. This doesn't sound like horror, but oh it definitely is.

Two friends, rising artists on the brink of a big break, will do just about anything to realize their dream – including a pilgrimage to the legendary and reclusive Harper Dutch's (Golden Globe winner Katey Sagal) mansion in the hopes she’ll record a song with them. While their life-long idol seems intent to help, the visit devolves into a twisted series of mental and physical torment as the pair discover Harper - and each other - may have other motives. With no other choice and desperate to record a song, the duo must go to dangerous lengths to prove their...

After a number of years in which it maybe wasn’t the case, it seems like we horror fans are continually spoiled year after year. Every December or January when it comes time to make my list of favorites for Daily Dead, I’m blown away as I look back and see just how many incredible books, films, TV shows, conventions, streaming offerings, DVDs, boutique Blu-rays – you name it – are released in a given year. Though it may have been a challenging disaster in so many other ways, 2021 was no exception when it came to horror. Here are just some of my favorites.
Chucky
As a huge fan of the Child’s Play film series – particularly some of the latter Dtv entries that have taken the franchise into bizarre and exciting new directions – I was out of my mind excited about the new Chucky TV show, which aired on both USA and SyFy.

Marco spends his days applying for jobs online and waiting for Dana, his pregnant girlfriend, to get home. Strange post-it notes mysteriously appear around the apartment with cryptic warnings. A mechanic texts and calls him with menacing messages from an old non-functioning cell phone. The walls close in and tensions build between Marco and Dana’s relationship until all sense of safety dwindles as the lines between imagined and reality blur for both Marco and the audience. When Marco discovers the root of it all, his real problems begin.
I jokingly thought to myself, in the early going of Apartment 413, that a really daft reason for what’s happening to Marco would be that black mould in the air conditioning unit Marco loves to stand in front of was driving...

Happy Halloweekend, dear readers! The best weekend of the year has finally arrived, and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to indulge in all sorts of spooky shenanigans over the next few days. For this Halloween edition of “From Streams to Screams,” I decided to focus on horror movies that have come out in the last few years that would be perfect to enjoy while celebrating the arrival of Halloween.
If you’re anything like me, I tend to focus a lot on my favorite horror movies throughout the month of October to feed my nostalgia. So this year, I’ve been trying to check out some recent horror movies I may have missed in an effort to broaden my horizons a bit. With that in mind, I put together a list of 25 recent horror films that are currently streaming that should either deliver up some thrills and chills,...

You can’t really talk about indie horror without talking about Dr. Rebekah McKendry. She has become synonymous with the genre, first as a journalist, then as a podcaster, and now as a filmmaker with multiple shorts and two features, All the Creatures Were Stirring and Psycho Granny, to her credit so far. She is what those douchier than myself might refer to as a “tastemaker” or an “influencer”—a lifelong fan of horror with a large platform from which to educate and enlighten. She’s a rare breed in the genre, both a creator and professional appreciator, deeply entrenched in all aspects of the genre. She has been and continues to be one of horror’s greatest champions.
Her debut feature, All the Creatures Were Stirring, a Christmas horror anthology co-written and directed alongside her husband David Ian McKendry, might as well be called “Indie Horror: The Movie,” seeing...

Of the many wonderful things found in writer/director Brea Grant’s 12 Hour Shift last year, chief among them was the return of star Angela Bettis to genre movies. Once a prolific presence in indie horror—thanks in large part to her frequent collaborations with writer/director Lucky McKee—the Texas-born Bettis had stepped away from horror for several years following her turn in McKee’s The Woman and a brief role on Tom Holland’s anthology Twisted Tales. She continued to act, but was sorely missed in the genre. Thanks to Grant and 12 Hour Shift, Bettis is back.
It’s the aforementioned working relationship with Lucky McKee for which most horror fans probably know Bettis best. A working actor on television, film, and even Broadway for several years before she was cast in May in 2002, it was her role as the title character in McKee’s feature...

Here’s some free advice for producers and financiers working in the movie business: hire Izzy Lee to make your horror movie. A fierce and fiercely independent filmmaker and author with a whole bunch of wild and wildly different short films to her credit, Lee has been poised to make the leap into features for some time now. I, for one, can’t wait for the day that happens.
If you know Izzy Lee or are familiar with her work, you know she’s outspoken and doesn't take any shit. Those are qualities that definitely carry over into her films. Her shorts "Rites of Vengeance," "For a Good Time Call..." and "Innsmouth" (a reimagining of H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” with an all-woman cast) deal with sexual politics in one form or another, each one critical of whatever status quo on which it is commenting. Her films tend to be socially conscious,...

Independent movies, by their nature, tend to tell smaller stories that speak to specific experiences. As a viewer, this means that you might be rolling the dice when you watch one, because it might not be an experience that speaks to you. But there’s something truly special about those times when an indie film does resonate because you feel connected to it in ways that you never expected when you started watching. Such was the case for me and After Midnight, a love story by way of creature feature from Jeremy Gardner and Christian Stella.
Funnily enough, on paper the premise isn’t one that immediately calls to mind aspects of my own past. Hank is a heavy-drinking hunter/bar owner in small-town Georgia. I grew up in Pennsylvania, don’t drink, and have been hunting once in my life. I’ve also never woken up one morning to...

There may be no one in independent horror having more of a moment right now than Brea Grant. As an actor, she starred in one of the best horror movies of 2020, After Midnight, and now The Stylist, already one of the best horror movies of 2021. As a writer, she’s responsible for Lucky (in which she also stars), an ambitious and inventive horror film about female fear that’s now available to stream on Shudder. As writer and director, she’s responsible for 12 Hour Shift, a bloody black comedy starring Angela Bettis as a drug-addicted nurse caught up in an organ harvesting scheme that goes bad; it was one of 2020’s best movies, full stop. The lesson from all of this? Give Brea Grant the keys to everything.
One of the infinite number of things that’s great about the Texas-born actor, writer, and director is her commitment to indie horror.

Horror has always been a genre that reflects its times. In the wake of #MeToo and an increased focus on the experiences and the prominence of women, both in the film industry and more generally, we have seen female writers and directors seek to fold those themes into genre cinema. Perhaps the most notable examples being the recent remakes of Black Christmas (directed by Sophia Takal) and The Craft (directed by Zoe Lister-Jones). With Lucky, writer/star Brea Grant and director Natasha Kermani (Imitation Girl) aren’t reinterpreting one specific text through that lens, rather they’re filtering a whole subgenre: the slasher.
May (Grant) is a writer just finishing her book tour. One night, she wakes to see a masked man outside her house. When she wakes her husband Ted (Dhruv Uday Singh) he seems nonplussed, confusing May by telling her ‘that’s the guy who shows up every...
