NewFilmmakers Los Angeles has announced the nominees for the 10th annual Best of Nfmla Awards.
Nfmla is a nonprofit organization that supports emerging filmmakers and artists through a monthly series of screenings and events in Los Angeles. The nominees for its Best of Nfmla slate are comprised of films that have screened as part of the Nfmla Monthly Film Festival selection in 2021. This year, the awards honor 125 nominees across 16 categories, including achievements in features, documentaries, shorts, experimental media and a best new filmmaker award.
“We are so proud to be able to highlight the incredible talent of all of our nominees, who have each created such inspiring work,” Nfmla programming director Bojana Sandic said in a statement.
15,000 will be provided to select Best of Nfmla winners, a practice that began last year to celebrate the career of recently passed producer Anthony Rhulen, who launched the indie producing company FilmEngine.

The Santa Barbara Film Festival unveiled winners for its 37th edition on Saturday morning, bestowing its Audience Choice award to the Irish-language film Róise and Frank.
Juried winners at this year’s festival include Jon-Sesrie Goff’s After Sherman as Best Documentary, and Shawkat Amin Korki’s The Exam (Ezmûn) winning the Jeffrey C. Barbakow Award for best international feature film.
Róise and Frank (Mo ghrá buan), directed by Rachael Moriarty and Peter Murphy, centers on Róise (Brid Ni Neachtain), a widow in mourning who befriends a dog who just might be her late husband reincarnated. The pic earlier this week screened at the Dublin Film Festival where it won the Best Ensemble award.
Overall, this year’s in-person festival attracted 200 films from 54 countries along with its usual A-list of panel galas celebrating the year’s best in film – a traditional stop on the awards circuit. This year included Q...

One of California’s leading film festivals returns with a full slate of live screenings, industry panels and starry tributes, offering movie lovers a ray of sunshine in the gloom of Covid. The Santa Barbara Intl. Film Festival (Sbiff) unspools March 2-12, for its 37th year via an in-person program. Although the fest adapted in 2021 to Covid health safety protocols and hosted drive-in screenings and virtual Q&a sessions, “This year will be closer to way things used to be,” promises executive director Roger Durling, who’s marking 20 years as the prestige West Coast fest’s executive director.
In all, the 200-film festival will host 95 U.S. premieres (62 features and 33 shorts) and 48 world premieres, including 21 feature films. “Being back in person, being at the festival, congregating and sharing opinions, it’s something we desperately missed,” says Durling of the Sbiff’s reawakening.

“We’re dealing with slavery and slave content. How are we approaching this material and what’s the unique way of doing that?” “Augustus” filmmaker Jon Alston asked when making his documentary short feature which is gaining awards chatter and hoping to make the shortlist.
Alston’s short tracks a slave’s fight as he stands up for his rights just before the Civil War, and seeing slavery evolve into today’s racial injustices and inequality.
Below Alston and cinematographer, Matt Edwards discuss the film’s journey and how filming on location helped serve the story.
Where and how did the journey for “Augustus” begin?
It was a wild time. Ayinde Howell, who plays Augustus, had this idea for a screenplay that he started in 2017. I worked with him briefly at USC on a short film, and I looked at it; at the time, it was different.
