“AI could be crypto, or it could be the Internet. We don’t know if it’s going to shit the bed and become nothing or replace all of us.”
That’s how one writer-producer described the threat of artificial intelligence as they walked the picket line in front of the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California, on the first day of the Writers Guild of America strike.
In interviews with WGA members this week, many singled out AI as one of their central concerns in the ongoing battle with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents Hollywood’s studios and streamers. The guild wants to prohibit studios from using AI to write or rewrite literary material, ban its use as source material and outlaw the use of WGA writers’ work to train AI.

Nobody saw the success of NBC‘s 2023 Night Court reboot coming – not even the folks involved with the creation of the show.
“I was a combination of absolute stunned and unbelievably thrilled,” Warner Bros. Television chairman Channing Dungey told The New York Times of seeing the show’s ratings.
To be fair to Dungey, the show’s ratings really are stunning. Per that same Nyt article, the first three episodes of Night Court achieved the highest ratings of any network comedy in the past four years, averaging 6.6 million viewers per episode. Additionally, the series’ first episode has drawn in more than 16 million viewers altogether when delayed and streaming views are taken into account. The show’s success was overwhelming enough that NBC has already ordered a second season.

Dean-dong! Attention fans of Greendale Community College. After a seven-year silence, lovers of Dan Harmon's heartfelt and beautifully meta series "Community" finally got the news they'd been waiting for ever since the phrase "six seasons and a movie" was first uttered way back in the show's second season. That's right. Earlier this year, Harmon officially sent the internet into a tizzy — well, the part that was already obsessed with his flight-of-fancy-loving study group — by revealing that a "Community" movie is officially on the way.
For those unaware of why this is such a big deal, do yourself a favor and revisit the "Rick and Morty" co-creator's much-loved 2009 series. In it, he introduced us to a classic sitcom formula (six strangers are thrown together by circumstance and eventually become unlikely BFFs) before swiftly skewering this familiar format and audience expectations. Instead, Harmon whisks us away on ingeniously written adventures that...

On "30 Rock," jokes were blasted at the viewer at a rapid rate. There were more gags, in-jokes, and puns in every scene than could be seen by the naked eye. While the show was initially meant to more reflect creator Tina Fey's time on "Saturday Night Live," as it went on, the show took on a life as its own as the most joke-dense show on television.
In a show as tightly written as "30 Rock," every character played their part, from Jane Krakowski's attention-seeking and dramatic Jenna Maroney to Alec Baldwin's domineering and confident Jack Donaghy. But one of the show's most consistently funny recurring side characters was Chris Parnell's Dr. Leo Spaceman.
A grossly and dangerously incompetent physician, Dr. Spaceman (pronounced "spuh-chem-in" by everyone except Tracy Morgan's goofy Tracy Jordan) would appear whenever the show's characters needed medical advice or attention, often providing both very poorly.

Eminem just added another award to his already vast trophy case. The Detroit rapper (along with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, 50 Cent, and Mary J. Blige) won a 2022 Creative Arts Emmy award for his participation in this year’s Super Bowl Halftime performance. The star-studded 14-minute set won an award for Outstanding Variety Special during the two-day awards showcase.

Adult Swim has found the new voice of Squidbillies‘ Early Cuyler ahead of the show’s final season.
After a competitive search (watch the video below), Tracy Morgan landed the role of the balding hillbilly squid from Georgia over several Adult Swim favorites including George Lowe (the voice of Space Ghost), Spencer Grammer (Rick and Morty‘s Summer), Steve Blum (aka T.O.M. of Toonami) and Squidbillies co-creator Dave Willis.
Morgan replaces actor Stuart D. Baker who was fired from the long-running animated series in August 2020 over “extremely offensive and derogatory social media posts” disparaging entertainer Dolly Parton and Black Lives Matter.
Morgan can currently be seen starring as Tray Barker on TBS’ The Last O.G., now in its fourth season. Morgan also is an executive producer on the show. He’s probably best known for his role as Tracy Jordan in the sitcom 30 Rock (2006–2013), and for his...

Right at the center of Midtown Manhattan, next to the MoMa, sits Ocean Prime steakhouse. It’s an expensive restaurant, perfect for out-of-town businessmen and rich suburban families. I’m here with the Flint rapper Bfb Da Packman, who tells me that it’s his favorite place to eat. He even named a song after it, the Coi Leray-assisted “Ocean Prime,” from Packman’s very good album Fat Niggas Need Love Too, released in June. “Order whatever you want, bro. To do the Trump challenge, start as follows: swivel your torso from side to side in the approximate manner of a malfunctioning animatronic figure, while simultaneously making your arms look like little chicken wings. Jerk your elbows back and forth haphazardly, then pump your first and purse your lips like a drunk dad doing their best Mick Jagger at a bar mitzvah. Clap twice. Mumble something unintelligible. Conclude by stretching your arms out, as if to offer benediction to no one, before pointing authoritatively at nothing.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind should be considered one of Steven Spielberg’s best films, but it rarely makes top five lists.
“Many people would agree that Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a straight-up masterpiece. That’s not some wild stretch. And yet, ask those same people what the best Steven Spielberg movies are and there’s a very good chance it barely makes the top five.”

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the “30 Rock” reunion, “30 Rock: A One-Time Special.”]
Way back in 2006, when “30 Rock” was still establishing its tone, the nascent satire’s fifth episode parodied the oft-clumsy and obvious manner in which television shows would implement product placement… by hocking Snapple in sharp and obvious fashion. At one point, Jack (Alec Baldwin) brings a lengthy runner praising the beverage to a close by saying, “Look, we all love Snapple. Lord knows I do, but focus here: We’re talking about product integration.”
“We’re not your shills,” Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), always the defender of unsoiled fart jokes, retorts.
“Oh, oh, I’m sorry,” Jack counters. “That’s right, they’re artists — like James Joyce, or Strindberg. Get real kids: You write skits mocking our president to fill time between car commercials.”
For seven glorious seasons, “30 Rock” pitted Liz vs. Jack, art vs. industry, always with the playful wink that...

Scripted by “30 Rock” co-creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the hour-long reunion special “episode” that aired Thursday on NBC (and some of its affiliate stations) brought the cast back together via Zoom calls and side plots with impressively high production values as everyone unites for the common cause of praising NBCUniversal and its new streaming service, Peacock. While there were plenty of “30 Rock” inside jokes as the characters got to update us on where they’ve been since the 2013 series finale and how stir-crazy they are in Covid-19 quarantine, the special was more of an opportunity for NBCUniversal to promote NBCUniversal.
Tasked with replacing a newly controversial Jenna (Jane Krakowski) for a potential “Tgs” reunion, Liz (Fey) Zoom interviews NBCUniversal personalities Sofia Vergara (NBC’s “America’s Got Talent”), Kandi Burruss (Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Atlanta”) and Khloe Kardashian (E!’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”). When 30 Rock drew its final breath in 2013, yards of column inches were devoted – deservedly so – to praising the work of creator Tina Fey. Article upon article applauded the characters, cast, performances and seven seasons of energetic, inventive, satirical comedy.
More than anything else though, 30 Rock was always about the gags. It was fruitcake-dense with jokes, regularly fitting in more quotable laughs before its opening credits than many shows manage in a full half-hour. As it returns for a one-off reunion special, join us in celebrating the many, many running gags of its seven-season history, from the fake movies, to the terrible yet incredibly catchy songs, Frank’s hats, and those godawful Tgs sketches…

Duh-duh. Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh. Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh. Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo. That elaborately recreated and stunningly accurate rendition of the 30 Rock theme song can only mean one thing: 30 Rock is almost back!

We’re getting the first look at the 30 Rock reunion special episode in a just-released teaser trailer. It opens with Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon, who is clearly not happy when she runs into a man without a mask on a New York City street during the coronavirus pandemic.
“No mask hotshot? You scared of the virus now?” she yells at the maskless stranger, “I already had corona, I’m on my way to donate plasma,” the man replies as he runs away from her. “Boom! Another successful interaction with a man!” shouts Liz.
The hourlong scripted special will air at 8 pm Thursday, July 16 on NBC, the day before 30 Rock launches on Peacock, NBCU’s new streaming service. After the success of the Parks and Recreation special on April 30, NBC announced that there would be an hour-long 30 Rock special airing on July 16 at 8 p.m. Yes, all your favorites - including Tina Fey (Liz Lemon), Alec Baldwin (Jack Donaghy), Tracy Morgan (Tracy Jordan), Jane Krakowski (Jenna Maroney), Jack McBrayer (Kenneth Parcell), and maybe a few more - will be returning because, as Kenneth the Page would put it, "there are only two things [they] love in this world, television and everyone."

Four episodes of 30 Rock will be removed from subscription streaming services, purchase platforms, and will no longer air on traditional TV, according to Deadline. The episodes were pulled at the request of NBCUniversal and 30 Rock executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock. The episodes will be taken down this week.
“As we strive to do the work and do better in regards to race in America, we believe that these episodes featuring actors in race-changing makeup are best taken out of circulation,” Fey wrote in a statement. “I understand now that ‘intent’ is not a free pass for white people to use these images. I apologize for pain they have caused. Going forward, no comedy-loving kid needs to stumble on these tropes and be stung by their ugliness. I thank NBCUniversal for honoring this request.”

Four episodes of 30 Rock in which characters appear in blackface are being pulled from streaming and syndication at the request of creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.
According to Variety, Fey said that the episodes are "best taken out of circulation" and apologized "for pain they have caused,"
The episodes in question will be pulled from streaming services Amazon Prime and Hulu, as well as purchase platforms.
Jon Hamm appeared in one of the pulled episodes in a wig and blackface as part of a spoof of Amos 'n' Andy.
Another installment involved Jenna (Jane Krakowski) and Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) deciding to swap identities in order to determine whether black men or white women faced more challenges in society.
The final episode being pulled by the studio is the East Coast version of a special live show that aired as part of Season 5, and marked the show's first live episode.

One of the greatest comedies in TV history is coming back; “30 Rock” will return for a hour-long special on NBC on Thursday, July 16.
Most of the standout characters from the hit series are expected to return, including Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan), Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski), and Kenneth Parcell (Jack McBrayer). The special is being billed as an upfront event to celebrate the stories and talent from NBCUniversal’s 2020-21 television season, and the episode will feature guest appearances from talent across NBCUniversal’s various brands, as well as the company’s new and returning programming.
“30 Rock” centered on an eclectic staff at a fictional live sketch show and parodied many entertainment industry practices. “30 Rock” originally aired on NBC from October 2006 to January 2013 and won 16 Emmys during its run, including three consecutive wins for Outstanding Comedy Series. NBC just announced that its annual Upfront event, which is usually an in-person showcase of all the upcoming programming on the network, will be hosted by none other than the characters of 30 Rock. Tina Fey will return as Liz Lemon, along with Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan), Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski), Kenneth Parcell (Jack McBrayer) and more to "celebrate the stories and talent featured in NBCUniversal's 2020-21 televisions season" in an hour-long, commercial-free event on July 16. Of course we're still in the middle of a pandemic (in case you forgot), so...

NBCUniversal’s upfront will be hosted by Liz Lemon, Jack Donaghy and Tracy Jordan and be shown to the masses as a TV special, rather than an exclusive presentation for advertisers.
NBC will air a TV special on July 16 that will bring back the cast of “30 Rock” to tout NBCU’s 2020-21 programming. NBCU, like other media companies, was forced to scrap its typical in-person Upfront presentation at Radio City Music Hall in mid-May due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company held a virtual presentation in its spot that was geared towards advertisers. On Tuesday, NBC finally released its fall programming plans.

NBC is making it 2006 again, through science or magic: “30 Rock” is returning to the Peacock next month for a new, original remotely-produced event that will also double as an upfront special for the NBCUniversal properties.
The special, which will air Thursday, July 16 at 8 p.m. on NBC, will feature the return of cast members Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and others, reprising their “30 Rock” roles for what NBC is describing as “a first-of-its-kind all-audience upfront event.”
The return of “30 Rock” comes as NBC also recently aired a new episode of “Parks and Recreation,” featuring the show’s stars reprising their roles in an all-new story. In this case, the “30 Rock” special will also be filmed remotely — but the story will additionally serve as a promo for NBCUniversal programming.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: Who is your favorite TV doctor of all time? (Doctor Who does not count.)
Damian Holbrook (@damianholbrook), TV Guide Magazine
I am not a fan of how TV usually represents doctors. They are mostly either super earnest and “I am going to save you at the risk of my career!” annoying or the “doesn’t play by the rules” rebel who rides a motorcycle down the ER hallway. Both are tired. And don’t even start me on the hard-ass doctors who obviously know everything and show it off while parading a crew of new residents through a massive hospital during the opening of soooooo many pilots. We get it: Their job is their life and they have a secret soft center.

The end of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is more than just the conclusion of a show, it's the end of an era...hopefully for just a short time. With the finale of Kimmy Schmidt comes the closure of the Tina Fey and Robert Carlock golden age of madcap comedy. Viewers first entered the world of Fey and Carlock established with 30 Rock in 2006. For seven seasons, Liz Lemon, Tracy Jordan, Jenna Maroney, Jack Donaghy and Kenneth Parcell entertained viewers with their antics behind the scenes of a fictional late-night sketch series. 30 Rock received 103 Emmy nominations during its run, taking home the Outstanding Comedy Series trophy three times. After 30 Rock wrapped up in 2013, Fey and Carlock got to work on what would...

Tina Fey hosted the May 19 season finale of “Saturday Night Live” and she brought some of her famous friends with her.
For her opening monologue, the former “SNL” writer and actor said she was told she was allowed to do anything because it was her birthday yesterday, and what she wanted to do was take questions from the audience.
The first one was from Jerry Seinfeld, who asked her if she thought the show had too many celebrity cameos of late. (Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro had returned just minutes before for the cold open.)
“I’m worried the cast isn’t getting a chance to grow,” he said.
Fey agreed and said she think “it hurts the show a little bit.”
But the next question she took was from Benedict Cumberbatch, who asked if Kenan Thompson was going to be on the show. When Fey said he would be,...

30 Rock was such an amazingly funny sitcom. It ran for seven seasons on NBC and ended on a high note. It's been five years since the show closed out and now it sounds like it could be making a comeback.
While talking to THR, actress Jane Krakowski said that a revival "would be a dream come true. We all had the greatest time on that show." There's no word on if Tina Fey, Tracy Jordan, Alec Baldwin and the rest of the cast would be on board, but there has been talk about doing this at the network.
The actress said that "there's definitely been talk and conversations" about the cast coming back together, and she goes on to say, "I know it's something the fans would love and we would love." She added:
"We all say over and over again that working on that show was probably the best...

Liz Lemon and her band of crazy television producers, writers, and stars won over our hearts when the show within a show, The Girlie Show With Tracy Jordan, first premiered in 2006. Now that it's been over five years since the beloved 30 Rock aired its final episode, fans of the series are experiencing major nostalgia thinking about where Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, Jack McBrayer, Alec Baldwin, and Jane Krakowski are now. 30 Rock — which followed head writer Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) as she dealt with a selfish new boss and an out-of-control star, all while managing the NBC page program — survived 11 years of running. The show saw guest stars like Jon Hamm, Salma Hayek, Lester Holt, Jimmy Fallon, Al Roker, and more. But what fans of the series remember most, of course, is the stand-out characters, Liz, Tracy Jordan, Kenneth Parcell, Jack Donaghy, Maroney, and more. And when it came time for...

When the original “Law & Order” was cancelled in 2010, people took the news hard. So hard, in fact, that the decades-spanning procedural was mourned publicly on the very network that cancelled it:
“I, for one, love cop shows,” Tracy Jordan says on “30 Rock” (Season 5, Episode 3, “Let’s Stay Together”). “I can’t wait for ‘Law & Order’ to come back,” he adds, right before Grizz whispers in his ear, breaking the bad news.
“Why? It was a tentpole! A tentpole!!” Tracy screams.
Seven years later, he’s not wrong. Though only one of the four spinoffs is still on the air — “Law & Order: Svu” returns September 27 on NBC — the franchise remains a memorable part of the cultural landscape, with its format, music, characters, and storytelling still easily identifiable to millions of viewers. Its influence on other series cannot be understated, including the hit limited series the latest “Law & Order” spinoff is emulating.

Picking favorites when it comes to “30 Rock” is an awful proposition because the whole series, barring a handful of exceptions, remains an extremely watchable and fascinating comedic journey. But with the show leaving Netflix at the beginning of October (and thus becoming completely unstreamable), we find ourselves in the unfortunate position of having to choose favorites.
Twenty-five episodes equates to less than 10 hours, so you should be able to make the time before September 30. And the adventures of Liz Lemon, Tracy Jordan, Jenna Maroney, Jack Donaghy, and beyond are worth it.

Wonder Woman is the first female-driven superhero movie to hit multiplexes since 2004's disastrous Catwoman – and in between these two comic-book–cinema poles, there's been a glut of films with masked and/or caped dudes fighting injustice and taking on imposing foes. But what's remarkable about this blockbuster (opening-weekend box office haul: $100.5 million domestic, $223 million globally) is that it may be the first comic-book film in which the obstacles aren't solely demigods, diabolical villains or a dark, tragic backstory but, rather, a society predisposed to hold back women. And while the new movie,...

Meeting your childhood idol can sometimes be a disappointment. But when Tina Fey met Carrie Fisher, it was a dream come true. Ironically, Fisher played Rosemary Howard, Liz Lemon's wacky childhood idol in the second season of NBC's 30 Rock. “30 Rock” gave us many gifts over its seven seasons, and its fictional TV series were some of the best. After all, “30 Rock” was Tina Fey’s spoof of what it was like to work on a sketch variety program like “Saturday Night Live,” which also has given us the gift of many faux shows. “30 Rock” was a show rich with odd and diverse sorts; its ensemble included a startingly large number of Academy Award winners/nominees (at least six! And don’t even get us started on the Emmy champs!). This odd collection of characters, in many respects, remain unforgettable even years after the show’s end. Ranking the characters who appeared in three or more episodes wasn’t easy. But by following the ethos established by the show, it also wasn’t hard.

Ten years ago on October 11, 2006, the world met Liz Lemon, a beleaguered comedy writer on a low-rated late-night sketch series on NBC. 30 Rock's Liz (Tina Fey), Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski), Kenneth the page (Jack McBrayer) and Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) became household names—but the characters aren't the only legacy 30 Rock left behind. Sure, Jenna will be remembered as a wacky and lovable sociopath and people will forever identify with Liz Lemon (especially her New Year's resolutions, "Yes to love, yes to life, yes to staying in more!"), but with Fey at the helm, 30 Rock left its mark on our lexicon: Liz Lemon and Co. contributed slang and terms you probably forgot...

In his new comedy, the Oscar-winning actor is trapped in a cat and must contend with being dressed up like a princess and having to relieve himself in private
No one was more excited than us over the release of Nine Lives, a film starring Kevin Spacey as a man stuck inside a cat. It’s the sort of film Tracy Jordan would have made in 30 Rock, filed alongside Honky Grandma Be Trippin’ and Fat Bitch.
Originally we feared it was some sort of ill-timed April fool, but earlier this year, a brief teaser proved that not only was it an actual film, but it appears to be a gloriously unaware relic from the VHS era. As if it were made 30 years ago and then forgotten about until now.
