Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones” is primed for a big night at this year’s Emmys. Adapted from the Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same name, the limited series follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family who were split apart during World War II: some members go into hiding and others are forced into concentration camps. The series, brutal and dark, follows the family’s attempts to reunite after the war ends. It’s a tough watch but a vital one and the series, created by Erica Lipez, is intelligent in its portrayal of such hard subject matter, as noted by critics.
Aramide Tinubu (Variety) stated: “Devastating, and profoundly moving, ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ illustrates the scope of World War II, the inhumanity of others and the anguish of disconnection and loss.”
Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) observed: “Yes, the miniseries is challenging, and steeped in heartbreak,...

“Shōgun” is looking to become the next “Game of Thrones” Emmy sensation thanks to its similar awe-inspiring world-building combined with political machinations and stunning performances. The FX series adapts James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel of the same name. The story follows an English sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) who ends up shipwrecked in Japan while Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) uncovers secrets that could benefit him in the political wars to come as he tries to rule one of the five Regents in Japan.
Husband and wife duo Rachel Kondo and “Top Gun: Maverick” story writer Justin Marks oversee this spectacular mini-series, which is a comprehensive, historical study that transcends world-building to present compelling characters. The expansive cast all deliver career-best work while Kondo and Marks handle each plot thread smartly and expertly.

“The Curse” has become one of the most talked-about shows this year with its idiosyncratic mix of cringe comedy, weird horror, marital drama, and sentiment proving to be a recipe for brilliance. The acclaimed Showtime drama series follows Nathan Fielder and Oscar winner Emma Stone as a newly married couple who host an HGTV show. They try to conceive a child as they navigate the effects of a curse.
Fielder and Stone’s performances propel the show to greatness and they are ably supported by Benny Safdie, who co-created the show with Fielder. He plays a desperate producer and while the role is scenery-chewing enough, it’s also a great role for filmmaker Safdie to once again show his acting chops, as noted by critics.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) proclaimed: “Safdie makes him a behind-the-scenes sorta-psycho who’s as compelling as his on-air compatriots, inhabiting Dougie with a brand...

Showtime’s “The Curse” is one of the most unique TV entries of the past year. The acclaimed drama series from Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie follows a newly married couple (Fielder and Oscar-winner Emma Stone) who host an HGTV show trying to conceive a child while navigating a curse.
The show’s tone and style, a satirical black comedy, makes for extraordinary viewing and while it is classified as a drama for awards purposes, it transcends genre classification in reality. Critics agree, this is one of the most unique and colorful TV shows out there.
Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun-Times) explained: “To its credit, ‘The Curse’ never takes its foot off the pedal, to the point where we’re absolutely sure Whitney and Asher are going to crash and burn — yet we’re still not prepared for the inspired lunacy of the fate that awaits them.”

Jodie Foster is having a good year. The two-time Oscar winner returned to the attention of the academy for the first time since 1995 with a nomination for “Nyad.” Now, she and showrunner Issa López have revamped HBO’s flagging “True Detective” with the best entry since the show’s first season.
“True Detective: Night Country” stars Foster as an acid-tongue, spiky police chief who is tasked with investigating the disappearance of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. Playing a detective will naturally harken viewers’ minds back to her turn as Clarice Starling in “The Silence of the Lambs,” the film for which she won her second Best Actress Oscar (“The Accused” being the other). It’s her meatiest role in years and Foster devours it.
Brian Tallerico (Roger Ebert) observed: “Our unsteady guiding hand through this darkness is Liz Danvers, played with icy perfection by Jodie Foster.

When Babe Paley meets Truman Capote for the first time in 1955 in the FX anthology series “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” it is the story of Ann Woodward that the famous writer tells in order to captivate her and her luminous friends. As Tom Hollander relishes one of Capote’s many rich monologues, we see Demi Moore as Woodward playing out two versions of the gruesome tale of the death of her husband – one in which she mistakenly shoots him, thinking he’s a burglar, the other in which she commits an act of intention homicide.
When, by the end of the premiere episode, Capote publishes his infamous excerpt from the unfinished novel “Answered Prayers” in “Esquire” in 1975, it is Woodward who takes her own life. While not one of the most prominent characters in the show, Woodward and her demise demonstrate the stakes of the feud at the heart of the series’ title.

It has been a long 19 months since we’ve been able to luxuriate in a withering line from Christine Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn, but fans of “The Gilded Age” may now celebrate as the HBO drama has returned with its second season. After the first batch of episodes ended with Carrie Coon’s social climber Bertha Russell making significant inroads with “old money” New York, these new episodes will find her at odds with the old guard once again as they go head-to-head with rivaling opera houses. The season premiere aired on Oct. 29 on HBO and streamed on Max.
With such an operatic season arc and its many other subplots, “The Gilded Age” has avoided a sophomore slump. As of this writing, the show has a 74 score on Metacritic, indicating “generally favorable” reviews. It is also certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 94% freshness score, with their critical consensus reading,...

“I’m a Virgo” certainly has a unique premise. The Amazon Prime Video series, which premiered on June 23, tells the story of a 19-year-old named Cootie (Emmy winner Jharrel Jerome) who’s 13 feet tall and hidden away from the world until he sets out and meets a superhero named The Hero (Walton Goggins). That summary is less surprising when you realize the series was created by Boots Riley, the filmmaker behind the outlandish satire “Sorry to Bother You.” But what do critics think of his foray into television?
If TV journalists are any indication, “I’m a Virgo” is an early Emmy contender for 2024. As of this writing it has a MetaCritic score of 86 based on 17 reviews that have been counted thus far — all of them positive. It also has a Rotten Tomatoes freshness rating of 97% based on 33 reviews, only one of which is listed as rotten. The Rt critics’ consensus says,...

“The Crown” is an Emmys force to reckon with. Amassing a whopping 21 Emmy wins across its first four seasons, the latest fifth season will hope to continue that impressive run.
Season five crept ever closer to modern-day history as it took place in the 1990s, in which several major events were depicted in the Netflix show. These included Queen Elizabeth‘s “annus horribilis,” the Queen’s state visit to Russia, the start of Tony Blair‘s (Bertie Carvel) reign as Prime Minister, the public divorce between Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), and the latter’s “Panorama” interview.
This season featured plenty of knock-out performances, as per usual with “The Crown,” and none more so than Imelda Staunton‘s turn as Queen Elizabeth. Staunton took over the role from Claire Foy and Olivia Colman and made the role, the third rendition of the character, entirely her own.

Can Apple TV+ replicate the success of “Ted Lasso” with its new comedy “Shrinking,” about a therapist who gets blunt with his patients while reeling from his own personal loss? “Welcome to Chippendales” had its Hulu premiere on November 22, earning rave reviews for Robert Siegel‘s limited series starring Kumail Nanjiani, Annaleigh Ashford, Murray Bartlett, and Juliette Lewis. The dramatic true story currently holds an impressive 93 freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, signaling overwhelming approval from critics.
The series is inspired by the book Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders by K. Scot Macdonald and Patrick MontesDeOca. It tells the origin story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee (played by Nanjiani), an Indian American entrepreneur who started the stripper troupe, Chippendales.

Does Janelle James (“Abbott Elementary”) have a better chance of winning the Emmy for Best Comedy Supporting Actress than Gold Derby’s racetrack odds may suggest? She’s currently third place behind Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) and Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”), but I think our awards pundits are greatly underestimating James’ bravura performance as Principal Ava Coleman on ABC’s mockumentary series about a group of Philadelphia teachers working at one of the worst public schools in the country. As Alison Herman raves in The Ringer, “Janelle James is the breakout as Ava, the deliciously incompetent principal.” Emmy voters, take notice.

Anna Chlumsky, in her first major TV role since “Veep,” is one of the stars of the smash hit Netflix series “Inventing Anna.” The actress plays Vivian Kent, loosely adapted from the journalist Jessica Pressler, who wrote the high-profile story about scam artist Anna Sorokin, aka Anna Delvey. While Julia Garner‘s performance as Sorokin has received a great deal of attention due to her unique accent, Chlumsky is the one at the heart of the Netflix limited series, with the story mostly being told from her perspective. “The Crown” returns for its fourth season this Sunday, with all 10 episodes set to stream on Netflix at once. Critics have already screened the season, which features the arrival of notable figures like Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Diana, the Princess of Wales. and they are loving it. Season 4 score a series-best 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, with glowing reviews for Gillian Anderson‘s portrayal of Thatcher and Emma Corrin as Diana.
The consensus is that Season 4 features some of the most dramatically compelling material yet, thanks to the presence of those two formidable women. The “domestic tensions” taking place within the walls of Buckingham Palace are more interesting than ever before, with a “propulsive energy” driving the season. Reviewers are commending the show’s execution of Season 4’s big theme: “if the time for change has finally come.”
Critics are particularly impressed by Anderson’s transformational turn, described as “viscerally physical” with “clenched-jaw virtuosity.

HBO’s “The Undoing” was originally scheduled to premiere in May, but it was delayed for several months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now the six-part limited series is launching on October 25, so while it missed the 2020 Emmys, it’s just in time for the 2021 Golden Globes. Can Hugh Grant win for his role in the mystery series? It would be his first victory in a quarter century.

Originally created for the Fox network by “Bob’s Burgers” masterminds Loren Bouchard and Nora Smith along with Josh Gad, “Central Park” premiered on May 29 on Apple TV+ bringing a lot of “Bob’s” style and sensibility to the story of a New York family fighting to save the iconic public space. Oh, and it’s a musical too. So what do critics think of this unique animated series?
As of this writing the show has a MetaCritic score of 81 based on nine reviews counted so far: eight positive, one somewhat mixed, none outright negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies reviews simply as positive or negative, the show is currently rated 100% fresh based on 16 reviews: all positive, naturally.

Amazon’s high-profile new drama series “Hunters” premiered on Friday, February 21. It’s the first regular series role for Al Pacino. The Oscar-winning actor has Emmys for the limited series “Angels in America” and the telefilm “You Don’t Know Jack.” Could he be on his way to a third win for his role as a vigilante tracking down and exacting revenge against Nazis?
SEEAl Pacino explains why he joined Amazon’s ‘Hunters,’ his Nazi-killing first TV series
Set in the 1970s, the series stars Pacino plays Meyer Offerman, a wealthy Jewish man who assembles a ragtag group to investigate and execute Nazis living secretly in the Us and plotting to bring about the Fourth Reich. The actor’s performance has a “confident wisdom” and “impish cleverness.” He keeps it at a “low rumble,” which makes his “rare outbursts more powerful.” He provides “a balanced through-line” that grounds the sensationalist story.

After months of anticipation, Apple entered the streaming television landscape with Apple TV+ on November 1. That includes the first three episodes of its highest profile program, “The Morning Show,” a behind-the-scenes look at a fictional morning news show not unlike “Today” or “Good Morning America” rocked by a #MeToo scandal involving one of its anchors. It features heavy-hitters in front of the camera and behind it, but what do critics think?

Premiering on Sunday night, October 27, HBO’s “Mrs. Fletcher” is a limited series told in seven half-hour episodes about a college-bound young man (Jackson White) coming of age and his mother (Kathryn Hahn) coming of middle age. Like “The Leftovers” it’s based on a novel by Tom Perrotta, and also like “The Leftovers” it was created by the author himself. But do critics admire this adaptation as much as they did Perrotta’s last one?
As of this writing the series has a MetaCritic score of 72 based on 10 reviews counted: seven positive, three mixed. The consensus on Rotten Tomatoes is similar. They rate movies and TV shows on a pass/fail scale, and they score it 77% fresh based on 13 reviews — 10 of which are positive. So most critics are admiring of it, but even more so of the woman who plays the title character.

Netflix‘s “The Politician,” about a teenager (Ben Platt) dead-set on becoming president, premiered on Friday, September 27, as one of the season’s most anticipated shows. It comes after creator Ryan Murphy signed a deal to produce programming for the streaming service for the next five years — and all it took was $300 million. Was it worth the price?
As of this writing “The Politician” has a MetaCritic score of 65 based on 21 reviews counted thus far, which are split almost right down the middle: 11 are classified as positive, 10 as mixed, though none are outright negative. That even split carries over onto Rotten Tomatoes, which grades on a pass-fail scale and rates the series 56% fresh based on 32 reviews: 18 thumbs up, 14 thumbs down. The Rt critics’ consensus says, “While ‘The Politician’ can’t uphold all of its tantalizing promises, it delivers just enough soapy satire in a sumptuous setting to keep Ryan Murphy fans invested.

Friends will not be going the way of Will & Grace or Murphy Brown, say the creators of the classic ’90s sitcom. No reunions. No reboots.
“We will not be doing a reunion show, we will not be doing a reboot,” co-creator and executive producer Marta Kauffman said Friday night during a Friends 25th anniversary panel at Tribeca TV Festival in Lower Manhattan. “The show was about that time in life when friends are your family,” she explained, adding that life changes when your family becomes your family.
And a reboot? No. “It’s not going to beat what we did,” Kauffman said.
Co-creator/exec producer David Crane concurred. “We did the show we wanted to do. We got it right, and we put a bow on it.”
Exec producer Kevin Bright couldn’t resist a well-timed joke. “Eh, I think we should do a reboot,” he said after Kauffman and Crane gave their regrets,...

The 2019 Emmys aren’t over yet, but the 2020 race has already begun. The eligibility period for next year’s awards has been underway since June, and Friday’s premiere of the Netflix limited series “Unbelievable” adds another major contender to the list with its timely story, starry cast and impressive pedigree behind the camera.
Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning article and an episode of the “This American Life” podcast, the series follows a pair of detectives (Toni Collette and Merritt Wever) as they investigate the rape of a teenager (Kaitlyn Dever), whose report of her assault was doubted by law enforcement. As of this writing, it has a Metacritic score of 81 based on 13 reviews counted thus far — 11 of them positive, two of them mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, it’s rated 92 percent fresh based on 25 reviews, only two of which are negative.

While reality dating shows like “Love Island UK” and MTV’s “Are You the One?” have embraced Lgbtq+ storylines in recent years, “The Bachelor” franchise, indisputably the blockbuster of the genre, has been far slower to adapt. Which is why a same sex story arc on “Bachelor in Paradise” has been praised by GLAAD and Lgbtq+ fans as groundbreaking. Contestant Demi Burnett came out as bisexual earlier in the season, but it wasn’t until last night that ABC introduced her girlfriend, Kristian Haggerty. Burnett’s storyline marks the franchise’s first inclusion of a same-sex relationship.
“’Bachelor in Paradise’s’ inclusion of Demi Burnett’s coming out story and her journey to accepting her queer identity is groundbreaking for the series,” said GLAAD Head of Talent Anthony Ramos in a statement. “Tens of millions of people around the world watch ’The Bachelor’ and ‘The Bachelorette’ franchises and this move...

“The Loudest Voice” premiered on June 30 on Showtime, and it’s the latest (but not the last) dramatization of the rise of right-wing media in the United States. Last year’s Oscar-winning “Vice” explored the rise of Dick Cheney and tangentially touched on the sinister Fox News phenomenon. The 2018 documentary “Divide and Conquer” went deep into the rise and fall of Fox News mastermind Roger Ailes specifically. And now this latest drama, told in seven parts with Russell Crowe playing Ailes, delves even deeper. But what do critics think of this latest account?
As of this writing “The Loudest Voice” looks a little bit like “Vice” actually, with a MetaCritic score of 61 indicating strong admiration mixed with some disappointment and concern. That’s based on 18 reviews counted thus far, 9 of which are positive, 8 of which are mixed and only 1 of which is outright negative. That’s consistent with Rotten Tomatoes,...

ABC staged a special “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” performance of classic episodes of “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” on May 22, and it turned out to be a huge ratings hit, averaging more than 10 million viewers. Will it be an unexpected blockbuster at the Emmys too? It could follow in the footsteps of a live event that took us by surprise last year: “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
“Superstar” aired on NBC as a live concert event on Easter Sunday in 2018. It was well received by critics and watched by almost 10 million viewers, so it was no surprise that it was nominated for Best Variety Special (Live) at the Emmys. But the classic musical exceeded our expectations with 13 total nominations, including Best Movie/Mini Directing and acting bids for John Legend, Sara Bareilles and Brandon Victor Dixon. It ended up winning five awards including Best Variety Special, which meant that producers Legend,...

Comedy Central has been an Emmy magnet when it comes to variety series like “The Daily Show,” “The Colbert Report,” “Key and Peele” and “Inside Amy Schumer.” But ironically, the network with comedy in its name still hasn’t been nominated for Best Comedy Series. This year the cable outlet could be a contender for “The Other Two,” which is about a show business world voters will recognize but treats that world with an affectionate wink instead of a sneer.
Showbiz shows have been popular at the Emmys, including three-time Best Comedy Series champ “30 Rock” (2007-2009), reigning Comedy Series winner “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (2018) and Comedy Series nominees “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Master of None,” “Atlanta,” “Glow” and more, which focus on characters in or around the entertainment industry. On September 27 the classic sitcom “Murphy Brown” made its return to CBS after 20 years off the air. And so has its title character (Candice Bergen), a TV journalist coming out of retirement in the midst of the Donald Trump administration to host a new show called “Murphy in the Morning.” “Murphy” joins a lengthening list of TV revivals, following the successful “Will and Grace,” the ill-fated “Roseanne” (now “The Conners“), and more. How has this one fared with critics?
As of this writing the returning show has a MetaCritic score of 54, with reviewers taking both sides of the argument: is it refreshing to see Murphy move on from Dan Quayle to the commander-in-tweet, or does the show lean too heavily on current events?

One day into Bachelor in Paradise and it's already clear that Bibiana Julian is going to be one of our absolute favorites this season. But Tbh, we've been a fan since day one. Even before Arie Luyendyk Jr.'s season of The Bachelor kicked off, Bibi had already won fans over with her official bio. She said she loves art, but also wants to be art. And she was a cheerleader, but always hated football! “[Bibiana] mixes nonsequiturs with contradictions, and I’m so confused and so in love,” wrote one Elle writer at the time. Chris Harrison agreed. "She spices things up,” he told People magazine. “She has a big personality and has her own pithy observations and judgments, and she’s not afraid to make those known. She has no fears about standing up for herself or to anybody.” But ever since she first showed up on our TV screens,...

AMC‘s “Breaking Bad” prequel “Better Call Saul” is back, though slightly delayed. It’s been more than a year since season three ended in June 2017. After beating the odds twice for her work on ABC’s “American Crime,” Regina King is back in the hunt for Emmy No. 3 this year with Netflix’s “Seven Seconds.” Back in 2015, Gold Derby’s racetrack odds mistakenly had King in third place to win behind perceived frontrunners Sarah Paulson (“American Horror Story: Freak Show”) and Mo’Nique (“Bessie”), while in 2016 our predictions erroneously placed her second behind Jean Smart (“Fargo”). Season two of HBO’s science-fiction western “Westworld” is upon us, which means it’s time for critics and audiences to once again tie themselves in knots trying to decipher this puzzle box of a show. It’s set in a futuristic theme park in which sophisticated, lifelike robots known as “hosts” populate a fantasy version of the Wild West. In season one, which aired back in the fall of 2016, the hosts started to evolve and even achieve sentience. But the timeline isn’t always what we think it is. And even the characters are not always who we think they are. There are mysteries within mysteries within mysteries. Are critics excited for a return to that world on April 22?

E.M. Forster‘s classic 1910 novel “Howards End” was most famously adapted into a 1992 Merchant Ivory film starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. It earned nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director (James Ivory), and it won three including Best Actress for Thompson. That’s a tough act to follow, but now, 26 years after that film, Forster’s novel has now been adapted into a four-part limited series on Starz that is garnering its own rave reviews. It’s rated 89% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and has scored 89 on MetaCritic, indicating near-universal acclaim. So now it has the potential to be as big a hit at the Emmys as the film was at the Oscars.

NBC’s live April 1 production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” came with the combined star-wattage of A-list musicians John Legend as Jesus, Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdelene and Alice Cooper as King Herod.
