Karen Hassan is terrific as an Irish woman fleeing sex work, but her powerful screen presence is not matched by the film around her
This melodrama set in Yorkshire stars Karen Hassan – a performer with terrific screen presence – as an Irish woman called Alison; she is trapped by her past into working in a brothel with an assortment of other luckless women, some of them trafficked in from abroad. The man who first got her on the game is her own father (Sean McGinley), who she still visits for a line of coke in his seedy trailer every now and again.
One day, shy tech wiz Sam (Aaron Cobham), a man with his own sad backstory, is compelled by a debt owed to the brothel’s vicious owner Max (Neil Bell) to install secret cameras in the rooms so Max and his henchman Barry (Theo Ogundipe) can spy on the workers and clients.

Gwyneth Hughes, writer of the BBC and HBO’s The Girl, has created a feature-length drama about slavery in modern Britain for the BBC.
Doing Money will star Romanian actress Anca Dumitra (Las Fierbinti) and Downton Abbey’s Allen Leech. It tells the story of Ana, a young Romanian woman snatched in broad daylight from a London street, trafficked to Ireland and used as a sex slave in a series of ‘pop up’ brothels. The 90-minute thriller exposes just how big business ‘doing money’ is.
Written by Hughes, who has also written ITV’s forthcoming adaptation of Vanity Fair, and directed by Lynsey Miller (The Boy With The Top Knot), Doing Money is produced by Warner Bros’ Renegade Pictures for BBC Two. Karen Hassan's popular Hollyoaks character Lynsey Nolan may have met a tragic end in summer 2012, but TV and film fans haven't seen the last of the actress as she has a number of new projects being released in the coming months.
The former soap star will be seen reprising her role as Annie Brawley in series two of The Fall later this month, while she has also recently been filming a brand new part in historical drama Vikings for the History Channel.
Digital Spy recently caught up with Karen for a chat about her new jobs, her future plans and her memories of playing Lynsey.
How would you sum up life after Hollyoaks?

In acclaimed BBC 2 drama, The Fall, Jamie Dornan proved that just because you’re incredibly good-looking, doesn’t mean you can’t absolutely terrify viewers. While the actor-model has since landed the much-coveted lead in saucy adaptation, Fifty Shades Of Grey, he’ll be back for The Fall‘s second season as serial killer Paul Spector.
Starring opposite Dornan is returning lead, Gillian Anderson, who will reprise her role Superintendant Stella Gibson. Their paths sorta crossed at the end of the first season, when Spector upped his game and began taunting the detective from a safe distance. He narrowly avoided being caught, in one of TV’s most talked about shows of last year.
Now, with this first glimpse at the second season, it seems Gibson’s dogged attempts to uncover his true identity are set to continue. This time around, Spector’s big-headed ego shows no signs of stopping as he targets Gibson personally.

Former Hollyoaks star Emmett Scanlan has revealed that his new role couldn't be further removed from his soap character Brendan Brady.
Scanlan will play the part of DC Glen Martin in BBC's new crime drama The Fall, which starts on Monday (May 13). He will star alongside former Hollyoaks actress Karen Hassan.
Speaking to The Irish Sun about the part, Scanlan said: "It's a bit strange. In the film Charlie Casanova I played a sociopath, in Hollyoaks I was Brendan the psychopath - now I'm the good guy.
"I don't really mind being typecast as long as I'm cast. But it's great to try something different."
Scanlan also admitted that he can't believe he is working with his co-star Gillian Anderson.
He said: "She's beautiful and a brilliant actress to watch. When we were filming, there was one scene where Gillian has a monologue and she's talking about serial killers.

The L.A. Complex
Wow. I didn’t see that coming. Frankly though I have to admit I don’t quite buy Kal trying to kill himself. The character just didn’t seem like the type to take things in that direction. Still, it’s pretty compelling drama and Benjamin Charles Watson and Andra Fuller not only have terrific chemistry, but are very talented actors.
Their scenes together are very intense and I thought the moment where Tariq told Kal that he’d never be able to get involved with another man without thinking about the abuse he suffered to be quite powerful. This continues to be a really well done storyline and quite unique in that it features black gay men, which is sadly still a rarity on the gay television canon. I’m very glad this show is back and they’re continuing this compelling story,...

Hollyoaks aired its most shocking storyline twist of the year so far tonight (June 28) as Lynsey Nolan was found dead in E4's first look episode. Fan favourite Brendan Brady (Emmett Scanlan) made the heartbreaking discovery in a dramatic cliffhanger for the soap, shortly after his war with enemy Sampson had begun to hot up. Karen Hassan, who played Lynsey, filmed her Hollyoaks exit scenes a few weeks ago, but show bosses kept her departure under wraps so fans would be surprised by the storyline twist. Lynsey's death will now spark a huge whodunit storyline as a number of suspects had a motive for wanting to get rid of her. The Irish nurse was always the biggest enemy of serial killer Silas Blissett (Jeff Rawle), and with the cunning villain returning to screens in upcoming episodes, fans may wonder whether he had something to do with her (more)...

I like discovering new shows featuring gay characters, especially when they are as charming and funny as this one. I think what I enjoyed most about this is that there were no coming out dramas, no one struggling with their sexual identity, no one dealing with homophobia or some such thing. I’m so tired of those topics in gay storytelling that I could scream. So it was refreshing to see a show where being gay wasn’t an issue that must be dealt with and that the characters' sexuality really didn’t matter in the context of the story. On the other hand, there was an issue in the storyline that should have been at least discussed because of the characters' sexuality that the writers chose to ignore. But I’ll get to that.

I haven’t seen this show lately, so it was nice to catch this latest episode of the ongoing drama revolving around ex-boyfriends Guarav and Karan. I'm so glad to see this story continue, especially given that this is a place and a world not used to gay storytelling, at least depicted positively. I would love to know how Indian audiences are reacting to the story. If any readers might know I'd like to hear from you by either dropping me a line or commenting at the end of this column.
Back to the story, I know this is a totally cultural thing and the style of this soap, but I couldn’t help but chuckle when Karan’s mother cried about wishing she'd died before seeing her son brought home drunk. It might have been the highlight of the episode, besides watching Guarav looking so angsty and gorgeous.

Hollyoaks star Jeff Rawle has admitted that his evil character Silas Blissett is becoming more unstable as time goes on. Silas has already committed three murders since arriving in the village last December, and this week's episodes have seen him taunt Lynsey Nolan (Karen Hassan) with his vow to strike again at midnight on Halloween. Lynsey has found herself embroiled in a twisted game with Silas as he has promised to hand himself in to the police if she can figure out who he is targeting. Rawle has now told Soaplife: "Nobody is safe. Theresa's already in his sights, Lynsey is a possible and so is Mercedes - he really doesn't like the McQueens! There are lots of other women whose morals Silas would consider questionable. He has already said that Hollyoaks makes Sodom and Gomorrah look like Sunday school. It could be anyone." The actor (more)...

Hollyoaks star Jeff Rawle has joked that he felt guilty while filming his character Silas Blissett's current storyline with Lynsey Nolan. Silas has spent weeks terrorising Lynsey as she has correctly worked out that he is the evil killer who has claimed three victims in the village. Praising co-star Karen Hassan, who plays Lynsey, Rawle told We Love Telly: "She's amazing. She's so good in this it's not true. I spent so many hours being mean to her, I felt bad!" Silas steps up his twisted games with Lynsey in this week's episodes as he orders her to guess who his next target is, promising that he will hand himself in if she works it out. However, if she fails, another girl will die. Rawle continued: "He loves all the melodrama and cheap horror. He can't get enough of this kind of schlocky plot and really enjoys toying (more)...

Silas's true colours are expected to remain undetected in the coming weeks as he has just framed Brendan Brady for Rae Wilson's murder - leaving Lynsey feeling isolated again. Cooper told All About Soap that Jacqui will soon take over the mantle of helping the nurse, explaining: "Lynsey really supported Jacqui through the rape trial and she actually believed Jacqui was telling the truth. Hollyoaks star Bronagh Waugh has claimed that she and her fellow cast members are in the dark over the future of the soap's ongoing serial killer storyline. Since Christmas, viewers have seen sinister Silas Blissett (Jeff Rawle) prove a dangerous presence in the village - murdering innocent student India Longford and con artist Rebecca Massey. Silas has also terrorised Lynsey Nolan (Karen Hassan) as she suspects he is the killer, but Waugh's character Cheryl Brady has refused to stand by her friend as she makes her allegations. Speaking to Pa about the plot's future, Waugh commented: "All we know, to avoid leaks, is that he will strike again - someone is going and none of us know who it might be. "We (more)...

Hollyoaks star Karen Hassan has revealed how show favourite Brendan Brady first becomes involved in the ongoing serial killer storyline. Last week, Emmett Scanlan - who plays Brendan - spoke of how his bad boy character could go "toe-to-toe" with sinister Silas Blissett in forthcoming episodes. At the weekend, meanwhile, Digital Spy confirmed that Brendan starts to see Silas in a new light just as Hassan's character Lynsey Nolan leaves the village for some time out following the grandfather's attempts to terrorise her. Speaking of the twist, Hassan told All About Soap: "Brendan is very territorial. When Lynsey is leaving, he sees Silas loitering in an alleyway watching her and he starts to think there's something odd about him." Hollyoaks star Karen Hassan has revealed her excitement over her character's central role in the soap's ongoing serial killer storyline. The actress's alter ego Lynsey Nolan is currently the only resident in the village who suspects that affable grandfather Silas Blissett is responsible for the grisly murders which have rocked the area in the past year. "When Silas realises that Lynsey's on his case again, he basically tells her to bring it on," Hassan told Inside Soap. Hollyoaks star Karen Hassan has confirmed that vengeful Silas Blissett will soon have Cheryl Brady in his sinister sights as his dark storyline continues. Earlier this month, Hassan's character Lynsey discovered Silas's true colours when he broke into her flat and attacked her. In a new interview with All About Soap, Hassan revealed that Silas (Jeff Rawle) soon seizes an opportunity to get even with Lynsey when he spots her handing over diet pills to Cheryl Brady (Bronagh Waugh). She explained: "Lynsey buys the pills for Cheryl off the internet, which is completely innocent. But Silas spots Lynsey giving the pills to Cheryl and sees an opportunity to get his own back. Karen Hassan found joining the cast of 'Hollyoaks' an ''overwhelming'' experience. The actress - who plays newcomer Lynsey Nolan in the hit Channel 4 soap - admitted appearing in 'Hollyoaks Later' two years ago as Cheryl Brady's (Bronagh Waugh) gave her the opportunity to get to know her fellow cast members, and meant she was ''more relaxed'' when she joined the show on a full-time basis two months ago. She said: ''The first time I came over it was surreal because obviously, I was a big fan of the show, so it was a bit overwhelming, but then when I came back ..
