Director/writer: Jamin Winans.
Cast: Christopher Soren Kelly, Quinn Hunchar and Jessica Duffy.
Ink is one of those stylish movies that succeed in breathing life to the stuff of daydreams and nightmares. Not only can this be viewed time and time again to enjoy, but also it can speak to those who love to explore the meaning of what goes on with the subconscious mind. Sometimes, the images a person receives in that state is a dark metaphor for life untamed, and it has a style that both Neil Gaiman (The Sandman) and Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) can appreciate.
With denizens from the underworld looking like well dressed ghosts donning white sunglasses, they come through as genuinely creepy. These dark lords of the Dreamtime are Incubi (with no relation to the creatures in folklore) and they are a stark contrast to the guardians of hope, better known as the Storytellers.

Director: Jamin Winans. Review: Adam Wing. It’s hardly surprising that I’d never heard of Jamin Winans’ mind-bending sci-fi thriller before it dropped through my letterbox, Ink’s birth was anything but typical. None of the big studios picked up the film for theatrical and home distribution in the Us, so Double Edge Films pitched the movie directly to independent cinemas, DVD, Blu-ray and online distribution by themselves. It was a move that worked, because Ink became one of the most downloaded movies on file sharing torrent sites - 400,000 times in a single week - exposing the film to a much larger audience. The UK release is brought to you by 4 Digital Media. Prepare yourself for alternate timelines and dreamlike sensibilities, because if the film achieves nothing else, Ink will at least twist your perception of reality. John (Chris Kelly) is a businessman in a hurry to get to his car,...

Ink
Stars: Christopher Soren Kelly, Quinn Hunchar, Jessica Duffy | Written and Directed by Jamin Winans
Made for $250,000 and already boasting 1.6 million hits on YouTube, the independently produced fantasy thriller Ink tells the story of a father and daughter who… to hell with that, I’m not going to spoil the film for Anyone, Ink is one film that needs to be seen completely cold so that you can decide just exactly what the film is all about. What I will say is that the film is, in essence, a story of good vs. evil, or light vs. dark and sees two factions of “dreammakers” warring for humanity’s souls as they sleep – the light delivering good dreams, the dark delivering nightmares. But that is just the start.
Ink is one of those rare movies that defies true explanation, offering as it does so many interpretations. The nearest movie you could...

Jamin Winans' Ink plays out as if it were one of the best kids' TV shows never filmed (if perhaps with a little more violence and profanity than most children's television) - a micro-budget urban fantasy where the director's vaulting ambitions can't exactly hide the lack of funds and the story tends towards the didactic but the sheer invention on display and the general good will make for hugely entertaining viewing.
Apparently no studio would touch the film for distribution, and it's not difficult to see why - with a cast of unknowns, a low budget and a relatively complex mythos (much of which goes conspicuously unexplained), any one of these would be enough to send most producers into hysterics.
Winans' ideas aren't hugely original, but they summarise neatly. He gives us two rival factions, both of whom influence people's dreams - the Storytellers, who deal in all the good stuff,...

Quickcard Review
Ink

Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins

Plot: A small budget sci-fi flick where a child’s soul is stolen by a mysterious creature named Ink. A Storyteller and others go on a journey to try and rescue her in multiple dimensions. The key seems to be bringing her estranged father (Kelly) back to her life.
Who’s It For? If you want a cast of strangers, decent action and a story filled with some nice twists then you have Ink.
Expectations: I knew my fellow critic Lehar didn’t like it, and she’s our indie-queen, always championing smaller films. On the other hand, there seems to be a pretty rabid underground following.
Overall

Plot: A child’s soul is stolen by an Ink (Incubus) in an effort to ingratiate himself to his superiors. So the Storytellers go on a quest to save her and reunite her with her father, John (Chris Kelly).
Who’s It For? Fans of fantasy who unfortunately have low standards.
Expectations: I don’t get a lot of sci-fi or fantasy to review though it’s a genre I really like. So I was hoping to find a diamond in the rough.
