“I lived, and I learned,” Taylor Swift sings 85 minutes into the expanded, rerecorded version of her breakthrough 2008 album, Fearless. Less than two years ago, Swift announced she’d be redoing her back catalog to reclaim ownership of her early material after the master recordings of her Big Machine discography were acquired by industry mogul Scooter Braun. The goal of this ambitious undertaking is plain enough. To borrow a phrase from “Tim McGraw”: When you think Fearless, Swift hopes you think “Taylor’s Version.”

The Netflix Original Christmas movie is now a genre unto itself, its ranks expanding every year by the flimsy, tinselly dozen. What its identifying aesthetic features are — and how you might distinguish it, say, from a Hallmark or Lifetime variation — is a tough question: You’d have to remember any single one of them a season later to say for sure. Some have Christmas princes, some have Kurt Russell, but almost all of Netflix’s yuletide offerings blend seamlessly into a cheer-by-numbers mass, as sweetly bland and textureless as non-alcoholic eggnog. There’s nothing especially wrong with that, or with “Operation Christmas Drop,” an anodyne, friction-free romantic comedy that faintly distinguishes itself from its snow-sprayed genre brethren with enticingly balmy South Pacific scenery. If nothing else, it gives viewers something to daydream about while they keep half an eye on its story.

Music icon Carole King wants everyone to know that she’s performing – along with Broadway’s Beautiful cast – as part of PBS’ traditional A Capitol Fourth event, and most definitely not as part of President Donald Trump’s “political rally.”
In a message pinned to the top of her Twitter page – with a little line drawing by New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly – King writes, “Just to be clear – I am appearing in ‘A Capitol Fourth,’ the traditional event held annually on the lawn at the Capitol. I am Not participating in t’s political rally.”
The drawing’s foreground features King sitting at a piano on the lawn, with an American flag planted on the edge of the musical instrument. Back when a then-unknown Colbie Caillat released her breakthrough song “Bubbly” in 2007, in a time when MySpace still walked the earth, she and her songwriting partner Jason Reeves didn’t know what to call the relaxed, acoustic pop song when they posted it to her gleefully decorated profile. So they just called it “folk.”
“We had no desire to be a specific genre at the beginning,” says Reeves, sitting at a Nashville coffee shop with Caillat, Nelly Joy and Justin Kawika Young — the quartet now known as the country band Gone West.

When one door closes, another opens! Maddie Poppe always dreamed of becoming a singer, and she thought she was getting her big break when she got the chance to audition for The Voice back in 2015 — but her dreams were quickly crushed when none of the judges turned their chairs to her during the blind auditions on the singing competition series. But now, after winning the American Idol reboot, Maddie proved the judges on the NBC show wrong. The 20-year-old reflected on her failed audition for The Voice, and she revealed that she was not allowed to choose her audition song. Maddie, who was 17 years old at the time, was given the song "Dog Days are Over" by Florence and the Machine — and it ultimately was the reason why none of the four judges turned their chairs for her. "I was a terrible singer at that song — it was not good,...

Maddie Poppe has sung eight songs so far on “American Idol” and viewers think that a whopping six of these were real winners. In our poll, all of her performances to date but two (her duet with Colbie Caillat on “Bubbly” and her cover of The Bangles‘ hit “Walk Like an Egyptian) merited at least 10% of the total tally.
Of these half dozen tunes, the Simon & Garfunkel standard “Homeward Bound,” which Poppe performed on the Top 14 show alongside “Walk Like an Egyptian,” is in the lead with 19% of the vote.
