Theater owners have been treated to their first glimpse of Amazon MGM Studios’ year-end holiday romp Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. While the studio didn’t give an official presentation at CinemaCon this week, it used the annual convention to show off 10 minutes of the comedy inside a spacious suite at Caesars Palace.
Those who saw the footage were asked to keep plot details under tight wraps, although its known that J.K. Simmons plays Santa and Bonnie Hunt plays Mrs. Claus.
Red One, from Dwayne Johnson and his Seven Bucks Productions, is set to hit theaters worldwide Nov. 15, 2024, in order to take full advantage of the long year-end holiday corridor (several cinema operators told The Hollywood Reporter the footage looks promising). The holiday action comedy is based on an original story from Hiram Garcia, president of production at Seven Bucks Productions. Jake Kasdan directed from a script by Chris Morgan.

While Amazon MGM Studios didn’t take the stage at CinemaCon, they did meet with exhibitors and key press to strut their future theatrical slate, in particular they showed off ten minutes of the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ movie Red One. While we agree to keep mum about the details of the Santa Claus rescue movie, let’s just say the originally conceived for Prime Video title is definitely meant for theatrical, which is where it’s going on Nov. 15; the only wide release currently on that weekend.
Let’s just say that Red One is a fire-breathing Christmas action movie that completely reinvents the holiday genre. There hasn’t been a mass appealing Christmas tentpole in six years, the last being Illumination/Universal’s The Grinch which made over a half billion worldwide. Red One is a really fun original action film for both Johnson and Evans, and...

Amazon MGM Studios executives have been screening privately a 10-minute sizzle reel of the upcoming Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans Christmas action adventure Red One and discussing the upcoming theatrical slate with exhibitors.
Red One was originally planned to launch on Prime Video and will now open theatrically on November 15. The tentpole, which Screen and other outlets were not allowed to write about in any detail after watching the reel, offers an indication of what the studio, led by head of film Courtenay Valenti and head of theatrical distribution Kevin Wilson, plans to assemble.

Erik Lomis, the late MGM film distribution executive, was posthumously honored as the recipient of the Will Rogers Pioneer of the Year Award at a charity dinner held at the Beverly Hilton on Wednesday.
Paramount domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson hosted the event, sharing memories of one of his closest — and most profanity-laden — friends in the business. Among the stories Aronson told was the time that he suffered a life-threatening medical emergency that required hours of surgery and woke up in the hospital to find Lomis, suffering from a painful kidney stone, waiting by his bedside.
“‘What the F are you doing here?’” Aronson recalled asking Lomis, “I thought you were in the hospital. He said ‘Yeah, I was, but I heard you might die, so I thought I better get over here until you did.’ That was Erik Lomis, and that’s the way he was. The best and most loyal friend.

Laughs blended with tears tonight at the Beverly Hilton as many in Hollywood remembered late MGM Theatrical Distribution Boss and big screen champion Erik Lomis who was lauded posthumously with the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation’s Pioneer of the Year award. Lomis passed suddenly at 64 on March 22.
It was a fitting tribute for Lomis, who was a force to be reckoned with in fundraising for the org which assists those working in distribution and exhibition in need. One longtime friend and MGM colleague of Lomis described his fundraising talents for Will Rogers: “When Erik called you, you never said ‘No’.” It was only a year ago that Lomis served as the charity’s co-Chair and hosted last year’s fun-filled fundraiser which bestowed the Pioneer of the Year award to his longtime colleagues, 007 franchise producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

Amazon MGM Studios has hired Peter Oillataguerre as its head of feature film production, studio head Jennifer Salke announced Friday.
Previously president of production at Spyglass Media, the longtime executive will begin his time at Amazon MGM Studios on Monday, where he will report to Dan Scharf, head of global business operations. Salke added in her announcement that Oillataguerre will work closely with head of film, streaming and theatrical Courtenay Valenti along with additional film teams.
At Amazon MGM, Oillataguerre will have oversight of all aspects of the feature film production cycle. Emma Seligman’s Bottoms is looking at an estimated weekend gross of $516k on ten screens with a possible leading $51,625 per-theater average for the raunchy, teenage high school girl take on Fight Club.
That’s a win for MGM, its Orion Pictures label and Brownstone Productions, producers on the modestly budgeted ($11.3 million) film written by Seligman and Rachel Sennott. The film skews young and was backed by edgy marketing — ingredients, although never surefire, behind the biggest post-Covid indie film breakouts.
Sunday’s final tally will determine if Bottoms nabs the highest per-screen average post-pandemic on ten or more screens. A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Opened to $50,131 at 10 locations in March of 2022. National Cinema Day, unspooling today, is a wildcard with attendance up but box office dollars limited by $4 tickets and seats available.

Jeff Logan is feeling relieved.
For the first time since Covid shuttered movie theaters, business is booming, with audiences flocking to see “John Wick: Chapter 4,” “Scream VI” and, just last weekend, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” And Logan, who owns Logan Luxury Theatres in rural South Dakota, is back in the black after enduring two years where profits vanished while studios failed to furnish enough big movies to play.
“It’s nice,” he says. “We don’t have to reassure our bankers every time we meet for coffee.”
Logan’s theaters aren’t the only ones experiencing a dramatic change of fortunes. Overall, the domestic box office stands at $2.3 billion, up 36.8% from the same period last year and an astounding 589.5% improvement over 2021, according to Comscore. The exhibition industry is finally looking like its pre-pandemic self again. That’s partly attributable to studios releasing new installments of successful franchises, but...
