Kim’s Convenience, the Canadian sitcom that airs on Netflix in the U.S. and in many countries around the world, is ending with its upcoming fifth season.
The show, which has been praised for its depiction of a Korean Canadian family, had been renewed through season six but co-creators Ins Choi and Kevin White decided to move on and it will now end with season five.
The season will end on CBC in Canada on April 13.
The show follows the Kim family, who run a convenience store in the Moss Park neighborhood of Toronto. It stars Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Jean Yoon as the parents and kids played by Andrea Bang and Simu Liu, who is set to lead the cast of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie.

Exclusive: Soda brand continues to exist as the company expands to include Canadian distribution, starting with The Riot Club.
Canadian production company Thunderbird has acquired UK indie distributor Soda Pictures in a deal that will see Soda grow its UK operations and slate as well as launching as a distributor in Canada.
The companies launch the new venture with a Canadian deal for Lone Scherfig’s The Riot Club, which premieres tomorrow night in Toronto. The Riot Club deal was negotiated between HanWay’s Thorsten Schumacher and Soda’s Eve Gabereau.
Soda will continue to operate under its own brand, as part of the Thunderbird group of companies. Soda principals Eve Gabereau and Edward Fletcher, who founded the company in 2002, will continue to lead the outfit.
The alliance will see Soda concentrating on high-end British films for its Canadian slate. The UK slate will grow in “scale and scope” thanks to the new investment.

Back in March we learned that Syfy is bringing us the six-hour miniseries "Ascension" later this year, and now word has come as to who will be starring in it. Yes, it mostly sci-fi, but considering the talent involved, we figured you'd want to at least hear about it.
From the Press Release:
Syfy today announced that Tricia Helfer (pictured), who played the humanoid Cylon “Number Six” in the iconic award-winning series "Battlestar Galactica," will star in the channel’s new original, six-hour event series "Ascension."
Helfer will play the beautiful, manipulative, and dangerous “Viondra Denniger.” Viondra regards herself as a not-so-secret power broker aboard the Ascension. As the Captain’s wife, Viondra is afforded a position of power and privilege, which she leverages as the Ship’s Chief Steward.

Toronto -- When CTV topper Ivan Fecan meets Canadian advertisers in Toronto on Thursday to pitch his newest U.S. network series, he'll need to convince them he can fend off mounting competition from rival broadcasters backed by deep-pocketed cable giants.
Fecan will tout the arrival on his network of ABC Studios' Michael Chiklis starrer "No Ordinary Family," Warner Bros. Television's "$#*! My Dad Says," CBS Studios' "The Defenders," Dick Wolf's "Law & Order: Los Angeles" from NBC Universal and the CBS Studios' family cop drama "Blue Bloods," starring Tom Selleck.
Fecan, whose CTV network airs 14 of the top 20 series on Canadian TV, will also wave the U.S. version of Simon Cowell's "The X Factor" for fall 2011 in front of the admen.
Still, Canadian primetime leader CTV didn't exactly splash out at the recent Los Angeles Screenings, acquiring only seven new fall series and four midseason shows,...

TORONTO -- Canadian broadcasters CTV and CanWest Media, normally rivals for Canadian primetime dominance, on Thursday acted together in asking for compensation by cable and satellite TV services for their signals.
CanWest CEO Leonard Asper told a CRTC hearing into the future of Canadian television that cable giants demand deregulation "but have profited from regulations that allow them to expropriate the signals of local stations without charge."
CTV and CanWest asked that the CRTC order cable operators to pay an average CAN$2.40 a month per subscriber for carriage of conventional broadcast signals.
Cable operators, who appeared last week at the regulatory hearings, bitterly oppose the fee-for-carriage proposal as consumers already receive conventional signals for free.
CRTC chairman Konrad von Finckenstein asked Asper what consumers would gain from their pitch for hiked cable and satellite TV rates.
"We're talking about retaining, maintaining, sustaining what they already have," Asper replied.
CTV CEO Ivan Fecan warned Canada's TV regulator not to bow to a demand from cable operators to end so-called genre protection, whereby a U.S.

TORONTO -- Canadian broadcaster CTVGlobemedia said Friday that CFO Robin Fillingham will retire in April after 37 years with the company.
Fillingham is being replaced as CFO by John Gossling, a former KPMG partner who most recently served as senior vp and CFO at Rogers Wireless Communications, the mobile phone arm at cable giant Rogers Communications.
In 1971, Fillingham joined Baton Broadcasting, one of seven affiliates of CTV that then Baton CEO Ivan Fecan used as a platform during the late 1990s to take control of the national TV network. His executive stints at CTV included secretary, senior vp administration and CFO.
Fillingham's retirement follows regulatory approval received last June for CTV parent CTVGlobemedia to acquire rival broadcaster Chum Ltd. for $1.4 billion.
CTVGlobemedia said Fillingham will remain as a consultant through Gossling's transition.
