It's doubtful that when Lois Duncan published the slow-burn mystery "I Know What You Did Last Summer" for young adult readers, she predicted it would become the basis for a horror movie franchise over 20 years later. That, however, is precisely what happened — much to the chagrin of junior high English teachers everywhere. Written by the now legendary teen horror screenwriter Kevin Williamson, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" was written years before it finally hit production, but after the massive success of "Scream" in 1996, producer Erik Feig knew the best course of action was getting another Williamson slasher into theaters.
Using Duncan's novel as a loose basis, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is about four friends named Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Ray, and Barry (Ryan Phillippe) who after partying on the Fourth of July after high school graduation, hit a person in a drunk driving accident.

The ’47 Meters Down’ Shark Franchise Has Made Stars Like Mandy Moore and John Corbett Much Wealthier
The 2017 horror survival film 47 Meters Down and its underrated sequel made considerably more than the studio expected. In fact, Dimension Films had such little faith in the first movie that they planned to release it straight to DVD. Fortunately, they sold the rights to Entertainment Studios instead, which gave the horror movie a chance in theaters, where it proved to be a major success.

Unlike typical shark films that attempt to replicate the success of Jaws, 47 Meters Down offers a new perspective to the genre. Starring Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, the film follows two sisters who decide to go shark diving while on vacation in Mexico.

“Bodies Bodies Bodies” (Lionsgate): A band of post-adolescent rich kids turn on each other, with violent consequences, in this wildly comic murder mystery. What’s perhaps most wickedly delightful about Halina Reijn’s satire with a body count is the way it plays out like a Gen Z Twitter fights, in real time, with weapons, proving that you can poke at internet culture even in a house where a thunderstorm has knocked out the WiFi.
Also available:
“Bullet Train” (Sony) Assassin Brad Pitt meets many, many other assassins and ne’er-do-wells on a bullet train, and they try to kill each other quickly.
“Beast” (Universal): Man-vs-Nature thriller with Idris Elba trying to protect his daughters from a very large lion intent on protecting his own territory.
“Breaking” (Decal/Bleeker) John Boyega resurrects the spirit of “Dog Day Afternoon” in this true-life bank-robbery drama from Abi Damaris Corbin and Kwame Kwei-Armah.

If you’re someone of a certain (gay) persuasion, all I have to say about “High School” to pique your interest is that it’s a) a new coming-of-age drama about twin musicians Tegan and Sara Quin that’s b) based on Tegan and Sara’s own memoir, c) co-stars Cobie Smulders as their mother and d) was created in large part by no other than Clea DuVall, whose performance in “But I’m a Cheerleader” among many other credits has long made her the subject of many a queer awakening. Whether these points immediately intrigue you or not, though, you should also know that the show is also great. You don’t have to know who Tegan and Sara are to appreciate their story, which explores loneliness, connection and longing with such palpable empathy.

Amazon Freevee has released the first trailer for High School, an eight-episode coming-of-age drama based on the New York Times best-selling memoir of the same name from Tegan and Sara Quin. The first four episodes of High School will premiere Oct. 14, with new episodes available every Friday on Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV).
Produced by Amazon Studios and Plan B Entertainment, High School is a story about finding your own identity—a journey made even more complicated when you have a twin whose own struggle and self-discovery so closely mimic your own. Told through a backdrop of ‘90s grunge and rave culture, the series weaves between parallel and discordant memories of twin sisters growing up down the hall from one another.

Summer’s not just the time for big family vacations, y’know. Though it’s five months away from Valentine’s Day, couples still want that romantic quiet getaway. And that’s just how this week’s new movie release begins. And as with many outings, well things don’t go as planned. Usually, it’s fodder for a zany slapstick comedy, or a tender love story, or the beginning of a nightmare, And considering that the producers are tauting the lead actress’s most recent, popular work, you can figure out that we’re taking a trip into terror. We’re right by her character’s side as she tries to find out why her partner has Gone In The Night.

This film was originally reviewed out of SXSW 2022 under its previous title, “The Cow.”
In writer-director Eli Horowitz’s labyrinthine, mostly unpredictable thriller “Gone in the Night,” becoming increasingly risk-adverse is one clear symptom of getting older.
Part unlikely friendship tale and part potpourri of genre tropes orchestrated as a parade of red herrings, this debut feature takes on modern culture’s blatant disdain of aging and veneration of youth.
It begins with a common sequence: two people driving on an empty tree-lined road. They are, of course, heading toward an isolated destination in the middle of nowhere. Middle-aged hydroponics expert Kath (Winona Ryder) and her younger, man-child boyfriend Max (an amusingly annoying John Gallagher Jr.) have decided on an impromptu getaway to a rented forest abode as part of an ongoing dynamic in which he constantly dares her to be more adventurous.

A tricky narrative requires deft execution, something that turns out to be well beyond the capabilities of “Gone in the Night.” Presented at SXSW earlier this year as “The Cow,” writer-director Eli Horowitz’s first feature has a wide-eyed Winona Ryder as a woman taken back when her boyfriend goes Awol from a weekend getaway.
What at first looks like a standard missing-person suspense tale turns out to have a more complicated agenda — but it is so haphazardly advanced and clumsily articulated, the film itself seems to be fumbling around for a cohering structure or mood. Vertical Entertainment opens the indie feature on July 15; its star’s renewed visibility via the new Netflix’s “Stranger Things” is likely to lend more of a boost in eventual home-formats release.

"When they want something, they'll do whatever it takes." Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for Gone in the Night, a mysterious new thriller from filmmaker Eli Horowitz. This just premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival a few months ago, and will be arriving to watch later this summer. When Kath and her boyfriend arrive one evening at a remote cabin in the redwoods, they find a mysterious couple already there. Her boyfriend disappears with the young woman, and Kath becomes obsessed with finding an explanation. She enlists the help of an unlikely supporter, played by Dermot Mulroney, with discovering an answer for their sudden breakup— but the truth is far stranger than she could have imagined. Winona Ryder and John Gallagher Jr. star with Owen Teague and Brianne Tju. This trailer gives away quite a bit, except for the final big reveal of what is going on and what really happened.

Brianne Tju knows a thing or two about teen horror, considering she was only 13 years old when she appeared on the R.L. Stine anthology series, "The Haunting Hour." In the years since, Tju has returned to horror repeatedly in projects like "iZombie," "Light as a Feather," "47 Meters Down: Uncaged," and both the "Scream" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" shows. Now, Brianne has finally been given the opportunity to lead a horror flick with Blumhouse and Epix's "Unhuman" from writer/director Marcus Dunstan and frequent co-writer Patrick Melton.

Arriving on digital this Friday, June 3rd, from Blumhouse Television and Epix is Unhuman, the latest project from Marcus Dunstan that finds a group of high schoolers on a field trip in a fight for their lives when things take a turn and they are confronted by a horde of blood-thirsty zombies. Co-written by Dunstan and Patrick Melton, Unhuman stars Brianne Tju, Benjamin Wadsworth, Uriah Shelton, Ali Gallo, and Peter Giles.
During the recent press day for Unhuman, Daily Dead had the chance to speak with Dunstan about his approach to the story for his latest tale of terror and how events from his childhood helped inspired him to take the less-expected route with the film’s storytelling. Dunstan also discusses working with his cast and crew and gives this writer hope that The Collective, the intended third part of The Collector trilogy, will eventually move forward at some point in the future after all.

"What is it with you shut-ins and these zombie fantasies?" Blumhouse + Paramount have revealed the main trailer for Unhuman, a horror comedy from Blumhouse Television that is coming to VOD next month. A new film from the filmmaker behind The Collector and The Collection, though this feels much different. A group of misfit high school students must band together to survive when their school bus crashes on a field trip. Relationships are tested once they realize they are being stalked by strange attackers. They must take down the murderous zombie-creatures... before they end up killing each other first. This stars Brianne Tju, Benjamin Wadsworth, Uriah Shelton, Ali Gallo, and Peter Giles. This definitely looks made-for-tv, with a limited budget and derivative ideas, even the "undead" after them aren't that scary. Worth skipping? Eli Horowitz’s The Cow offers a rather convoluted approach to an unfortunately straightforward story. For much of its runtime, however, the film successfully offers the kind of misdirection that best not be spoiled in a review.
The premise seems simple enough—a forty-something couple, botanist Kath (Winona Ryder) and her boyfriend, a former student of hers by way of a continuing education extension course Max (John Gallagher Jr.), drive to a remote cabin in the woods. When they arrive they find the place has been double-booked, leading to a weird compromise: a younger couple inhabiting the cabin agree to let them stay the night. They are Al (Owen Teague), a socially awkward introvert, and the much more outgoing Greta (Brianne Tju).
In the process they make the night a mini-party over wine, drinks, and a bizarre vintage board game they’ve found—Pillow Talkers, which is meant to be...

The Cow also stars Dermot Mulroney (The Courier), Owen Teague (It franchise) and Brianne Tju (47 Meters Down). Horowitz and Matthew Derby wrote the script,...

Age is never far from Kath’s mind. When her younger boyfriend steps away for a moment, Kath steals some time to check out the wrinkles on her forehead, frowning over what she sees, trying to smooth away the years with her fingertips. Kath (Winona Ryder) knows that she and Max (John Gallagher Jr.) aren’t exactly well-matched, but she’s been down the marriage path before and it didn’t work out so well, so why not see what happens with eager-puppy Max? When Eli Horowitz’s “The Cow” opens, Kath and Max have been dating for just over a year — he was a student in her continuing education class, only signing up for the plant lover’s course because he very much misinterpreted what “hydroponics” meant — and things have been going alright. As the pair set out on a weekend away in the country, it seems that perhaps they’ll get better.

The Cow is a film about a mystery that comes with many mysteries of its own, chief among them being the question of why Winona Ryder’s career is so shaped by her past. Stranger Things may have brought her back to the public eye, but it seemed to claim her as an ’80s icon when Ryder only had a walk-on part in that decade’s final reel. Her role in Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 ballet psychodrama Black Swan likewise came with a sting in the casting, pitting Ryder as the outgoing grand dame against Natalie Portman as an ingenue snapping at her heels. And here again, much mention is made of her age when Sandra Bullock—seven years her senior—could lead a bigger movie without a peep.
The good news is that Ryder is easily the best thing about Eli Horowitz’s debut feature, a twisty thriller that packs...

Fittingly enough, “Three Months” is a movie about waiting, and while 12 weeks may seem like an eternity to its openly gay lead character, Caleb (Australian pop star Troye Sivan), it’s nothing compared with the decades others have spent waiting for a project like this to come along. Here, readily available to anyone with a Paramount Plus subscription, is a frank, affirmational portrait of a contemporary queer teenager. Writer-director Jared Frieder’s feature debut feels like the LGBT equivalent of “Juno”: snappy and refreshingly nonjudgmental in dealing with the consequences of a risky one-night stand.
In 2011, when the movie is set, it takes three months for an antibody test to conclusively determine whether someone who might have been exposed to HIV was in fact infected. That’s a simple rule of the road for sexually active gay men, but one rarely discussed in popular culture. It can hardly be...

Caleb is looking for answers. That isn’t surprising; after all, he’s a just-graduated queer teen desperate to get out of South Florida, an endless summer of nothing stretching before him, simply itching for his “real life” to start. But Caleb, already understandably restless and out of place, really has one big, major answer he needs: whether or not he has HIV. And while this might not sound like the stuff of coming-of-age comedy, first-time filmmaker
Frieder, who previously served as a staff writer on the cut-way-too-short series “Sweet/Vicious,” knows a thing or two about the dramatic plot he’s crafted: He lived his own version of it more than a decade ago. Over time, Frieder’s story has seemingly settled into the neat beats of the indie coming-of-age tale, complete with “wacky mode of transportation,” “unsettling subplot involving a Bff that’s treated way too tamely,” and even “Ellen Burstyn is the grandmother!

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Matthew McConaughey hasn’t exactly shut the door on appearing in the third installment of Channing Tatum’s stripper franchise “Magic Mike.” But the actor, who appeared in the 2012 original (but said no to 2015’s “Magic Mike Xxl”), is still waiting for his phone to ring about “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.” “Channing Tatum, call me, bro! I haven’t heard from ya!” the Oscar winner said when I recently asked him if he’ll be back in the role of strip club owner Dallas.
“I don’t know,” McConaughey said. “I’d have to read [the script] first. It was a helluva lot of fun doing the first one.” Tatum announced in November that “Last Dance,” directed by Steven Soderbergh, will be released on HBO Max. Shooting is set to begin next month in London and Italy.

"I'm not really sure how I'm feeling. And I think that's okay." Paramount has unveiled an official trailer for Three Months, a coming-of-age indie dramedy marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Jared Frieder. This hasn't played at any festivals as far as we know, but MTV is standing behind it and releasing the film streaming on Paramount+ later this month. Troye Sivan stars as Caleb, a South Florida teen. On the eve of his high school graduation, everything changes when he's exposed to HIV. While he waits three months for his results, he finds love in the most unlikely of places. Aw this looks really lovely! Better than expected. It also stars Viveik Kalra, Brianne Tju, Ellen Burstyn, Judy Greer, Javier Munoz, Louis Gossett, Jr., and Amy Landecker. I am not sure where this came from but it might be something special. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jared Frieder's Three Months,...

I Know What You Did Last Summer is not getting an encore on Prime Video.
Deadline broke the news late Friday that the streaming service has canceled the YA horror series after just one season.
News of the cancellation is somewhat surprising.
The show garnered mixed reviews, but there was a decent amount of buzz, which typically translates to viewership.
However, the streaming service never releases raw viewership statistics, so really any show can be canceled at any time.
The good news for fans is that the central mystery was pretty much closed up at the end of I Know What You Did Last Summer Season 1.
Written and executive produced by Sara Goodman, I Know What You Did Last Summer is based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel, which was also the basis of the iconic 1997 film.

Amazon Prime Video’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” television adaptation has been canceled after one season, Variety has confirmed.
The teen horror series, based on the 1973 novel of the same name that was also adapted into a film in 1997, follows a group of friends who are mercilessly stalked by a serial killer after they cover up a fatal car accident. The show stars Madison Iseman, Brianne Tju, Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore, Sebastian Amoruso, Bill Heck, Fiona Rene, Cassie Beck and Brooke Bloom.
The first four episodes of the eight-part series premiered on Oct. 15, with the rest of the show’s installments debuting on a weekly basis thereafter. The show received mixed reviews, with Variety‘s Latoya Ferguson calling it “an overlong story that an otherwise talented cast has to work hard to land.”

Season one of I Know What You Did Last Summer came to an end on Nov. 12, and whew, a lot went down. Not only did we finally figure out who the killer is - ahem, Margot (Brianne Tju) - but now Margot and Alison (Madison Iseman) are in a relationship?!? Excuse me, what? We did not see that one coming!
"It was the hardest secret for me to keep," Tju told Us Weekly. "I believe once we started shooting the last block - episodes seven and eight - that [showrunner Sara Goodman] told everybody, and then when they were going to know anyway because the episode [scripts] were coming out. I think everyone kind of had the same reaction of like, 'Oh my God!' But then also, 'Oh yeah, that makes sense!' . . . Margot's definitely a little crazy!"

The killer has been revealed!
All the mystery pieces fell into place on I Know What You Did Last Summer Season 1 Episode 8. After weeks of bloody deaths, Wai Huna's serial killer came into the light and left chaos in their way. Kudos to everyone who got it right.
But with the killer unmasked, did the reveal live up to the anticipation? Or was it just another summer memory?
"Your Next Life Could Be So Much Happier" kept us on our toes. Every time there was a chance of hope, the Og crew and the killer muddied the waters to make this a shocking and uneasy end.
Margot being the killer made a lot of sense.
I'm not saying this because I guessed that she and Kyle were involved in the killings early on. The reveal worked because her killer motivation fit the build-up to this moment; that everything we knew...

“You can never really know anyone, least of all yourself,” Madison Iseman’s character says atop the first episode of Amazon’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. It’s a foreboding thesis statement, one that viewers won’t fully grasp until the end of the premiere — if even then.
Like the original Ikwydls movies from the late ’90s, this limited series adaptation of Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel also revolves around a group of teenagers keeping a deadly secret, much to the disapproval of a mysterious figure who — wait for it — knows what they did last summer. But what...

With the upcoming release of another “Scream” movie and nostalgic IP becoming the de facto lay of the land, there are two schools of thought when it comes to reviving a franchise: Keep the original intent and make fun, or go completely out of left field and do something different. In the case of Amazon Prime Video’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” the new serialized version retains little save for the name of the 1997 feature (itself based on Lois Duncan’s novel of the same name) and the generalized plot point that a death takes place. In lieu of a return to urban legend frights, audiences get the streaming equivalent of “Euphoria,” where our murder-mystery comes with a healthy, vaguely pornographic, dose of teenage sex and drugs.

The timing is ripe for an all-new version of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” to be revived: The 1997 film starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Philippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar was a contemporary piece with the original Neve Campbell-led “Scream,” which is soon returning with a much-hyped new sequel-slash-reboot movie, and slasher pop culture is now at a perfect millennial nostalgia touchpoint. However, unlike January’s upcoming “Scream,” Amazon’s eight-episode “I Know What You Did Last Summer” series isn’t also a continuation of the original series (including the 1998 sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”), despite the recent passing of the torch from the original cast. Instead, writer and executive producer Sara Goodman has created a whole other loose adaptation of the 1973 Lois Duncan novel of the same name.

The cast of Amazon’s upcoming horror series I Know What you Did Last Summer got a pleasant surprise during the series’ New York Comic Con panel Friday as the stars of the original 1997 film dropped by for some quick “fan questions.”
While appearances by Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Jennifer Love Hewitt were pleasant surprises for the Nycc audience, their words of encouragement and excitement meant more for the talent and creative team of the upcoming show.
“It feels like they’ve given us their blessing; that’s hugely meaningful to me and to all of us,” said showrunner Sarah Goodman. “The last thing we want to do is undermine what they’ve created. We moved to the next generation with full respect to the movie and to the actors that are in it.”
Set to debut October 15, the YA horror series is a modern take on the 1997 slasher.
