“She weren’t a prostitute this time – she were innocent.”
This line – spoken by David Morrissey as Dcs George Oldfield in The Long Shadow’s third episode, when 16 year old Jayne MacDonald is found dead – pretty much says it all. Because by this point in ITV’s Yorkshire Ripper drama, we know two other women, Wilma McCann and Emily Jackson, have also been killed, but after the police labelled them as sex workers their deaths have been treated very differently to Jayne MacDonald.
We’ve seen detectives like Oldfield refer to sex workers as “whores”, “slags”, “hookers”, “prozzies” and “tarts”, but it’s still a gut punch to viewers to hear it said so plainly: to the police – even senior detectives – sex workers who get murdered aren’t “innocent”, but somehow deserving of the violence inflicted on them.

George Kay looks conflicted. Speaking to Deadline before the resolution of the writers strike, the British WGA member had put down his pen on an Amazon Studios movie project and ducked a U.S. publicity round for his Apple TV+ series Hijack. But it’s fair to say that the strikes coincided with Kay having a serious moment.
Not unlike the protagonist in Hijack, Idris Elba’s brooding professional negotiator Sam Nelson, Kay has spent years maneuvering his way between three complex projects for Apple, Netflix and ITV/Sundance—only for them all to launch within four months of each other.
Just like Nelson’s character in Hijack—“He gets brought in, by big companies…when it all kicks off,” Nelson’s wife explains to a police officer in the show—Kay’s the man you bring in when you want to deliver a character-led thriller that will keep viewers hooked over several episodes.

True crime stories are always interesting to watch because they help us understand the mindset of a killer. There are plenty of reasons why a person becomes a serial killer, and true crime stories allow the viewers to understand the pattern, the Mo and the motive behind such acts. Most of the time, a killer will be a his or her who lived a normal life and became a figure of some standing in his or her locality. The Long Shadow is based on the five-year-long manhunt for the Yorkshire Ripper, a serial killer who carried out multiple murders in the suburban UK. The investigation mentioned in the show takes the audience through the late 1970s in England and the kind of atmosphere people lived in.

The latest documentary miniseries to tap into the neverending streaming craze around history’s most brutal crimes, “The Ripper” charts the carnage wrought by a serial killer of women in Yorkshire, England, in the 1970s. But there was another misogynistic element in play as revealed in this four-part series, and that turned out to be the police launching the investigation who spent half a decade chasing a slayer who constantly outsmarted them.
For fans of the HBO series “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” and even the podcast “Sword and Scale,” both unsparing their detailing of grisly crimes, “The Ripper” is an endlessly grim source of fascination. It also effectively flays a procedural breakdown within the police force, showing that the pile-up of misinformation surrounding the deaths of 13 women could be as maddening as the murders themselves.

Peter Sutcliffe, a British serial killer known as the Yorkshire Ripper, has died after contracting Covid-19 at the age of 74, according to CNN.
He had been suffering from underlying health conditions before testing positive for Covid-19, and prison officials could not confirm whether that was the cause of death.
“Hmp (Her Majesty’s Prison) Frankland prisoner Peter Coonan (born Sutcliffe) died in hospital on 13 November. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed,” a prison spokesperson told CNN.
Sutcliffe was convicted in 1981 for murdering 13 women and attempting to murder seven more in Northern England between 1975 and 1980. He confessed to authorities in 1981 but then contested the charges in court — during his trial, he claimed he was on a mission from God to kill prostitutes. He was sentenced to 20 life terms.
His first murder was in October 1975, when he murdered a 28-year-old mother of four and sex worker named Wilma McCann. Over the next five years,...

It's hard to believe that it's already been one month since Khloé Kardashian gave birth to her first child, True Thompson, with her serial cheater baby daddy, Tristan Thompson. Although the 33-year-old has yet to release a photo of the newborn, she has shared some intimate details about the baby including the meaning behind True's name and plans for her first Mother's Day. But that's not all! Khloé revealed on her app some of True's favorite things to do since making her grand entrance. "Baby True is going to be a month old on [May 10]! So far, she's so incredibly sweet and patient — really not fussy at all," the Good American founder said. "I can tell she's going to be super athletic and incredibly strong! She's very calm, peaceful and loves to cuddle with her parents." I can’t believe my baby will be a month old tomorrow...

Tristan Thompson is a new man! Or so he says. In his first interview since his cheating scandal was revealed and Khloé Kardashian gave birth to his second child True Thompson, Tristan insisted that he's different now, because having a daughter "changed" him. We know what you're thinking: doesn't Tristan already have a son? Didn't that matter? Well, he has an answer for that. “I think with a girl, you’re just so much more emotionally like… With a boy, it’s just like, ‘Hey, man. You’ll be alright, man. Stop crying,’” Tristan explained on Uninterrupted's Road Trippin' podcast. “But with True, it’s like, ‘True, it’s gonna be Ok. You know, we’re right here. Daddy’s here to feed you. It’s me! Look, yeah!’ It’s way different, but it’s fun, though… It changes you.” A report one day earlier claimed that despite his infidelity,...

Jessica Written by Patrick Vermillion Directed by Emily Jackson Presented by Sanguine Theatre Company at Irt Theater, NYC July 22-August 6, 2017
Recently, promoting his new movie The Big Sick on The Daily Show, Kumail Nanjiani talked about working with his wife, Emily V. Gordon, as a co-writer on a film based on the first year of their own relationship. He related an anecdote about composing a date scene to account for the fact that he remembered having a great time, and she remembered having a terrible time, if you imagine that same disjunction, but instead of a rom-com scenario, it is that of a conscious person being created, you will arrive at one of the central conflicts in Patrick Vermillion's Jessica. Never heard of Incarnate? Of course not – it’s another under-the-radar Blumhouse special without any marketing campaign, starring a random Hollywood actor (Aaron Eckhart) who’s seemingly thrown to the proverbial low-budget production wolves.
Much like The Darkness or Visions or The Veil, there’s a reason why Blumhouse is sweeping Incarnate under the mainstream rug – much to director Brad Peyton’s despair – but, frankly, it’s the film’s own fault. Maybe Blumhouse would have been a little more sympathetic if this demonic possession flick wasn’t so-generic-it-hurts boring, even with a dash of Wachowski magic added to the fold (by way of The Matrix inspiration). Also, can someone please save David Mazouz from 2016 already, so he can stop starring in underwhelming Blumhouse horror fare?
Eckhart stars as family-man-turned-wheelchair-riding-super-exorcist Dr. Seth Ember, whose specialty is “evicting” demons (aka “parasites”) from the minds of possessed victims. He figured out that...
