Today the Newport Beach Film Festival kicks off its Irish Spotlight. As a huge fan of Irish films, I was interested to learn that t first film to be screened is "A Shine of Rainbows" starring Aidan Quinn and Connie Nielson. Based on a novel by Lillian Beckwith, the film tells the story of an orphan whose life is transformed by an extraordinary woman who teaches him to conquer grief and discover magic in nature and himself. Other films include "Ondine", starring Colin Farrell and "Atlantic", directed by Conor Ferguson and starring Liam Cunningham. Although I haven't heard much about this film or read the book, I'm excited to see that it is getting coverage as one of the 400 films being screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival. Channel 4 U.K. has inked a deal with Network Ireland Television (Nitv) for the acquisition of 33 short films from the Irish distributor's library of 850 titles. The film package represents independent productions from British, Scottish, Irish and American directors, as well as films funded by the Irish Film Board, Scottish Screen and various U.K. regional funding agencies. Derry O'Brien, Managing Director of Nitv said: “We are delighted, as are our producer clients, to have secured this licensing deal from Channel 4, one of Britain's major terrestrial broadcasters. The chosen short films include many award winning Irish projects such as Ifta winner Ken Wardrop's 'The Herd', Undressing my Mother' and 'Farewell Packets of 10', Conor Ferguson's 'Atlantic' and 'A Film From My Parish: 6 Farms' from Tony Donoghue.

Short film 'The Wednesdays' has won an award at the Filmfest Emden-Norderney in Germany; while 'Green Grass' and 'Sugar Stick' are set to screen at the forthcoming La ShortsFest in the Us. 'The Wednesdays', written by Luke Clancy & Conor Ferguson, directed by Conor Ferguson and produced by Anne Marie Naughton of Park Films, has won first place at the International Filmfest in Emden, Germany. The 11th La Shorts fest (July 23 – 31) has seen Irish entries make the cut again this year. With an expected audience of over 10,000 movie goers, filmmakers and entertainment executives and having recognition by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences this is the world's largest short film festival.

The full Irish line up for the Palm Springs International Shortfest was announced yesterday. With only 315 films being selected from more than 2,500 worldwide entries, Irish talent is represented with seven films chosen for screening, at this year's festival. The selected Irish shorts are: Atlantic' by Conor Ferguson; 'Whatever Turns You On' by Declan Cassidy; 'Sunshower' by Liam Gavin; 'The German' by Nick Ryan; 'The Man Inside' by Rory Bresnihan; 'Sandpiper' by Jimmy T. Murakami; 'The Ranger' by Pj Dillon.

Thomas Heffron's 'The Confession' and Brian Durnin's 'Of Best Intentions' have been selected to screen in the Tribeca Film Festival. Us Festivals in Cleveland and Nashville will also feature a line up of Irish short titles as well as 'Finsceal Phaidí' being selected for Palm Beach International Film Festival. 'The Confession', based on a young man nervously confessing his sins to a priest who seems to be more interested in gossiping about the women of the town, will screen at the Us festivals Cleveland (March 19 -29) and Nashville (April 16 - 23). Irish titles also to screen at Nashville include 'James' (Connor Clements), Ifta nominee 'Martin' (Sean Branigan) and 'Morse Collectors' (David Cooke) while at Cleveland shorts include 'The Basket Case' (Owen O'Neill), 'Lucky Escape' (Shane McCabe), 'Finsceal Phaidí' (Colm Bairead), 'Team Sleep' (Danann Breathnach), 'Treeclimber' (Michael Kinirons) and 'The Wednesdays'...
