A24 has optioned rights to “The Simple Life” icon Paris Hilton’s autobiography “Paris: The Memoir,” published this past March. Hilton’s entertainment banner 11:11 Media, Elle and Dakota Fanning’s Lewellen Pictures, along with David Bernad’s Middle Child Pictures, are producing.
A24 retweeted the Deadline announcement with the caption, “That’s hot.”
“Paris: The Memoir” charts Hilton’s struggle with Adhd, anxiety, and abuse. Exclusive: Max Hollman, a rising star drama executive at HBO, has left the premium cable network to join Middle Child Pictures, the film and TV company launched recently by David Bernad. Hollman will continue to work with HBO as he sets off to run television for Middle Child Pictures as Producer/Executive through a first-look TV deal the company has signed with HBO and A24.
Under that pact, HBO will get first crack at Middle Child Pictures’ TV development, with A24 serving as the studio on projects that the network takes in. For shows that don’t go to HBO, A24 can come on board and sell them elsewhere.
Hollman, who started his career as an assistant in the television department at CAA, had been at HBO for almost eight years, rising from assistant to coordinator, manager, director and, most recently, VP, drama programming. During his tenure,...

David Bernad, Mike White’s longtime producing partner, received his first Emmy win, for outstanding limited series, for season one of The White Lotus. As the Sicilian follow-up prepares to potentially dominate the drama categories this fall, Bernad chats with THR about moving the hit series across continents, killing off Jennifer Coolidge and a taste of what to expect for season three’s jump to Thailand.
David Bernad
Did you get the green light for season two after wrapping season one?
No, it was really only after the show came [out]. After the experience of making the show, and audiences responding to it, Mike then was committed to doing a second season. And HBO came to Mike and said, “What do you want to do next?” He said, “Another season of White Lotus.” They jumped at it. We scouted, basically, from Rome south, all through the Amalfi Coast, Ravello, Positano, Portofino,...

Dave Bernad won an Emmy Award last year for producing HBO’s “The White Lotus” in the limited series category. He’s back this year with his second nomination for that show, only now it’s in the drama race. He also has another producing bid for Amazon Freevee’s comedy series “Jury Duty,” which puts him in a small group of people to be nominated for a drama and a comedy in the same year. Bernad is “incredibly fortunate and appreciative for the love,” he tells me. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Bernad recalls showrunner Mike White telling him, “I think I’ve gone crazy,” on Emmy nominations morning when he saw the Sicily-set season nabbed 23 total bids, including for nine actors: F. Murray Abraham, Michael Imperioli, Theo James and Will Sharpe in Best Drama Supporting Actor, and Jennifer Coolidge, Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, Aubrey Plaza and Simona Tabasco...

It’s the day after the Emmy nominations, and “Jury Duty” is still nominated for comedy series and three other things. No one from the academy stepped up to declare, “We’re sorry, but there’s been a terrible mistake. What we meant to say was, ‘Poker Face.’ You can understand how something like this can happen. ‘Jury Duty’ and ‘Poker Face’ sound almost exactly the same.” No. That didn’t happen, and at least one executive producer was relieved that it didn’t.
David Bernad won an Emmy last year as part of the producing team of “The White Lotus” and is now nominated again for that drama series. But he’s also an exec producer on “Jury Duty,” and he was beyond thrilled to hear the news that the grassroots viral hit had been honored for series and its writing and casting as well as for quirky star James Marsden in comedy supporting.

It was a big win for the underdog on Wednesday as Freevee’s Jury Duty was nominated for four Emmy Awards including Outstanding Comedy Series, Supporting Actor for James Marsden, Writing for Mekki Leeper and Casting for Susie Farris.
Although completely unexpected, the surprise was obviously welcome by executive producer David Bernad, who spoke to Deadline about the momentous occasion.
“I give an incredible amount of credit to the writers, Cody Heller, Andrew Weinberg, Lee Eisenberg, Gene Stupnitsky; Nick Hatton, one of our incredible producers; the cast who were all exceptional obviously James, and everyone else in the cast who really dedicated so much of their life to the show. They all deserve this award,” Bernad, also a producer on HBO’s The White Lotus and NBC’s Superstore, to name a few, told Deadline.

Months after “Jury Duty” unexpectedly stole America’s heart, the Amazon Freevee continued bucking its underdog status by landing four primetime Emmy nominations, a success EP Dave Bernad attributes to the show’s uplifting moments of humanity.
“As we went into Covid, we were in a dark time and the idea was trying to make something hopeful, and specifically part funny that had heart and, most importantly, that highlighted the hero’s journey and the wonderful humanity [that’s] out there,” Bernad told TheWrap. “I think maybe that’s what people responded to in the show, especially in this moment.”
The series nabbed two big scores for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for James Marsden, as well as nominations for Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series, cementing Amazon Freevee as first free AVOD service to receive a major series Primetime Emmy nomination.

Editor’s note: The following interviews were done outside of the FYC event series, as there was no panel or screening.
When it comes to assembling the quintessential ensemble cast for a series, it’s an art, not a science; an organic melding of faces and emotional forces. No more was this important than in the high stakes second season of HBO’s drama series White Lotus in which we’re pulled into the posh, sexy allure of those upper-class denizens on vacation only to relish in their deceitful sides and hijinks, warts and all. The series not only propelled fresh faces to the forefront such as Natasha Rothwell in season one, whose Hawaiian White Lotus resort spa manager is returning for the Eastern religion and spirituality set season 3, but it’s also shown a fresh, dynamic range of actors we’ve seen previously, i.e. Jennifer Coolidge and Alexandra Daddario among several others.

Congratulations are in order for Sia! The Australian musical hit-maker is a married woman now, having tied the knot with her boyfriend, Dan Bernad, in a small, private ceremony in Italy last weekend.
According to People, which first reported the news, there were only four guests at the intimate ceremony apart from the bride and groom. Pictures obtained by the outlet show Sia dressed in a stunning three-quarter sleeve mermaid gown and a matching sheer veil as she and Bernad exchanged vows and kissed under a beautiful, candlelit gazebo decorated with flowers.
It's unclear how long Sia and Bernad have been together but their first public appearance was at the "West Side Story" LA premiere in December 2021 (pictured above), which suggests they've been dating for at least a year and a half. The "Chandelier" singer also posted a photo with Bernad on Instagram in October 2022. Apart from that, the couple...

After a decade-long friendship, comedy producers David Bernad and Todd Schulman finally put together their hidden-camera comedy expertise to make Amazon Freevee’s viral success “Jury Duty.”
The executive producers of the overnight hit mockumentary combined their talents for the improvised-scripted sitcom. Bernad and Schulman began with the idea to hone in on sitcom genre tropes and create a story about an isolated individual amongst a cast of actors as they served on a sequestered jury.
The two have had successful stints with unconventional comedy subgenres, most recently within the improvised-scripted sphere. Schulman worked with Sacha Baron Cohen on “Who Is America?” and Bernad teamed with Eric Andre on “Bad Trip.” Prior to “Jury Duty,” Schulman served as executive producer on “Borat,” “Bruno,” “The Lovebirds” and “The Dictator,” while Bernad executive produced “The White Lotus,” “Superstore,” “Uncharted” and “White House Plumbers.“

Years after she released her series “Dummy” on the now-defunct Quibi, Cody Heller decided to go into her next project without expectations. In doing so, she’s had her mind blown by the positive reaction she saw online as people received her latest work, “Jury Duty.”
Starring James Marsden, the documentary-style comedy takes one unsuspecting civilian and puts them through a series of pranks. The catch? He doesn’t know everything is fake. The entire case is fake — the judge, courtroom, bailiffs, and all of his peers are all paid actors and everything this team of “jurors” experienced is carefully orchestrated by Heller and her team of writers.
It’s a months long process from development and pre-production that sets the stage for the series, which would go on to become a success for Amazon’s free streaming platform, Freevee.

There was a lot to love about "The White Lotus" season 2, but one of the strongest parts of the series by far was the stellar casting. From Jennifer Coolidge to Michael Imperioli, every actor knocked 'em dead. It's almost hard to imagine anyone else playing the characters we know and love, but sometimes a casting director is forced to make those tough choices. Even if they put together a bulletproof cast, it's always possible that someone will have to pull out of the project at the last moment.
That's exactly what happened to "The White Lotus" season 2, but the team was able to come together and recast the role so flawlessly that it's hard to say which actor was the replacement. Believe it or not, Ethan Spiller was originally supposed to be played by "American Horror Story" alumni Evan Peters.

The restructures, layoffs, cancellations and a maybe-strike currently impacting the U.S. TV industry rippled through the halls of the Berlinale Series Market this week as senior execs forecasted an international future.
Mass redundancies at the likes of Disney, AMC, Paramount and Netflix in recent months and major strategic rethinks from the studios and streamers were the talk of the market. Among the chatter was a sense this may lead to a wave of non-u.S. activity.
Shades of Blue creator Adi Hasak didn’t mince his words when he described U.S. TV as a “disaster zone” Monday. Hasak, who is currently making shows in Scandinavia and the Middle East, was heavily critical of Disney in particular for a strategy that he deemed akin to a “mental breakdown.”
And he wasn’t the only big name pointing to U.S. strife — albeit the others perhaps less forcefully.

Sydney Sweeney has yet another project on her horizon. The “Euphoria” and “White Lotus” star is set to lead new horror film “Immaculate” from Black Bear Pictures.
The psychological thriller, set to begin shooting in January, stars Sweeney as Cecilia, a devout Christian who is offered a role at an illustrious Italian convent. Her warm welcome to the picture-perfect Italian countryside is soon interrupted as it becomes clear that the convent harbors dark and horrifying secrets.
The film is directed by Michael Mohan, best known for his Amazon original film “The Voyeurs.” The erotic thriller starred Sweeney and Justice Smith as a couple who spy on and become obsessed with the lives of the couple across their street. Sweeney and Mohan first worked together on the director’s Netflix high school comedy series “Everything Sucks!” Mohan directs a script written by Andrew Lobel, while Sweeney produces with Jonathan Davino for Fifty-Fifty Films.

HBO’s The White Lotus has won the 2022 Emmy for best limited or anthology series.
“I forgot to thank HBO my other speeches,” said The White Lotus writer-director Mike White, who earlier in the ceremony won Emmys for both writing and directing the anthology series.
“I’ve been talking about this show for 15 years,” said executive producer David Bernad. “It took a shared vision and unwavering trust of Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi and Nora Skinner at HBO to bring this to life.”
Bernad added: “To our exceptional cast and crew, you showed up every day — in the midst of global uncertainty, away from loved ones — and gave your heart and soul and passion to the show. We came together as a community to try and make something special, and through our collective efforts, we’re standing here today. We share this with the entire White Lotus family.

David Bernad and Mike White have been producing partners for 13 years — but their working relationship extends even further back than that.
Bernad began his production career in the mailroom at UTA, hustling to produce short films on nights and weekends. “I had this romantic notion of starting in the mailroom. I really wanted to start at the bottom and work my way up,” he explains. He met White through a mutual friend who was working at the time as White’s assistant; when she left the role, she insisted that her former boss interview Bernad. “I went over in my cheap suit, cheap shoes and interviewed with him. I thought it went great. Mike didn’t hire me. I later found out it was because he didn’t like my shoes. But the assistant, Rebecca, would not let Mike interview anyone else. So he finally hired me.
