Get ready to go gaga for another group of earnest teenagers hoping to change the world, or at least win a fake election at a famous youth retreat.
The contender to watch this week: “Girls State”
In 2021, “Boys State” picked up recognitions from the National Board of Review, Directors Guild of America, Emmys, and several critics groups, so of course we’re getting a sequel. This time, directors Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss move from Texas to Missouri to profile teenagers attending the eponymous mock-government program. The ambitious, excitable girls are just as fascinating as their male counterparts, and you can see them in action on Apple TV+.
Other contenders:
“The Zone of Interest“: If you still haven’t caught Jonathan Glazer‘s mesmerizing Holocaust drama, which won two Oscars and continues to spark controversy, it’s newly streaming on Max. “How to Have Sex”: Molly Manning Walker...

Astrakan (David Depesseville)
Astrakhan fur is unique: dark, beautiful, and stripped exclusively from newborn lambs, even ones killed in their mother’s womb. (Stella McCarthy once said it’s like wearing a fetus.) That ruthlessness—a sense of lost innocence; blood sacrifice—runs deep in Astrakan, a new film from France and one of the better in Locarno this year; and if that title isn’t enough to give pause, plenty else in the opening exchanges will. The first act is a procession of flags, both red and false: at the opening the protagonist, Samuel, lightly goads a snake in the reptile house of a zoo; moments later a rabbit is hung and skinned in his kitchen with all the ceremony of...

David Tennant proved to be a delightful and efficient host at the Ee BAFTA Film Awards, the British equivalent of the Oscars. Oppenheimer took home a total of seven prizes at the BAFTA Film Awards which were held at London’s Royal Festival Hall last night (18th February). The three-hour epic about the creation of the atomic bomb also finally brought Nolan that Best Directing BAFTA that he’s been up for twice before. Cillian Murphy also took home Best Actor, while the film was also named Best Picture at the end of the night.

“Oppenheimer” is now in pole position to have a big night at the Academy Awards after it won a lucky seven times at the BAFTA Awards. This hit Universal film claimed Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. plus Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score. Many of these winners headed backstage after getting their hands on the golden gongs. Here’s the best of what they had to say.
Nolan, who also shared in the Best Picture win with his wife Emma Thomas and Charles Roven, emphasized how touching it is that his film has received such attention and acclaim. “It’s a nihilistic subject. The film, inevitably, reflects that. The recognition this film has received and to see so many people that I’ve worked with be recognized is very, very enthralling, particularly the crew and our cast.

The biggest night for British film proved to be a major one for Christopher Nolan. After reigniting the summer box office alongside Barbie, his atomic bomb biopic Oppenheimer led the way at the BAFTAs 2024, earning seven awards on the night – including the most hotly-contested categories. The ceremony took place at the Royal Festival Hall, “where my mum and dad used to drag me to make me get some culture,” he remembered. “Some of it stuck.” As well as thanking the “fearless and peerless” Cillian Murphy, and his producer – and wife – Emma Thomas (“I love you”) in his Director speech,...

“Oppenheimer” swept the BAFTAs on Sunday night, winning awards for director Christopher Nolan and actor Cillian Murphy as well as taking home the prize for best film.
Overall, the movie took home seven golden BAFTA masks, with “Poor Things” coming in second place with five wins.
BAFTA chair Sarah Putt opened the ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday night by welcoming the star-studded audience, which included Prince William, who arrived solo as his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, continues to recuperate at home following an operation. William, who is president of BAFTA, did not give a speech, no doubt in part because of renewed interest in his personal life following his father King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis last month.
In her speech, Putt said she was sending Catherine and the King “our very best wishes” before handing over to the night’s host, “Doctor Who” star David Tennant.

2023 was a good year for Australian actor Jacob Elordi, who played Elvis Presley in “Priscilla” and a posh Oxford student with a sinister new friend in “Saltburn.” The latter performance even earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor. But that’s not his only chance at BAFTA victory. He’s also up for the Rising Star Award, which goes to the year’s most outstanding breakthrough performer as voted on by the public. He’s the front-runner in our odds to win that award, but he has to overcome one major disadvantage: he isn’t British.
The Rising Star Award has been handed out since 2005, and out of the 18 actors and actresses who have won the award, only three weren’t British (16.67%): French actress Eva Green (2006) and Americans Shia Labeouf (2007) and Kristen Stewart (2009). The last 13 winners in a row have been Brits. None have ever been Australian.

British cinematographer and filmmaker Molly Manning Walker had quite the year in 2023. She was the cinematographer for Charlotte Regan’s Scrapper, a British drama focusing on a broken relationship between a Father and Daughter. Most notably, she released her feature directorial debut ‘How to Have Sex’. This follows three teenage gal pals going on a rite-of-passage girl’s holiday to Malia, where they plan to drink, club and hook up to their heart’s content. What should be the best summer of their lives turns sour, when lead Tara experiences a shocking encounter with a guy they’ve buddied up with on their trip. Exploring the topic of consent in a heart-breaking yet honest way, How to Have Sex is an important slice of realism that showcases excellent direction, tremendous performances and tells a story worth telling.

Mia McKenna-Bruce is an English actress. Her performance in the film How To Have Sex is, rightfully, being spoken about with many superlatives. Subtle, controlled, thoroughly alive, deeply impacting, it is a star-making turn. There’s a scene where her character, Tara, is simply walking down the street, and it’s something of a revelation. It won her the BIFA for Best Lead Performance. On this episode, she breaks down the ingredients that helped her deliver this work—an extensive audition process to find her co-stars that allowed her time to play; complete trust in the director, Molly Manning Walker, and everyone on […]

After winning the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes last year, Molly Manning Walker’s singular debut How to Have Sex has been racking up BAFTA nominations and widespread acclaim to nobody’s surprise. The film is much more than a fresh look at female adolescence and early sexual experiences (read: hurtful disappointments), shining bright with actress Mia McKenna-Bruce’s lead performance as Tara, a bubbly teen eager to lose her V-card. What better place to do so than a Greek seaside resort where most of the things you can find on public display begin with a b, like: Brits, booze, and blowjobs. Tara, Skye (Lara Peake), and Em (Enva Lewis) are done with exams and embrace their first summer getaway far from home by partying alongside a pretty-boy type named Paddy (Samuel Bottomley) and his wisecracker friend, Badger (Shaun Thomas), to see where this can go.

Hollywood blockbusters were shut out at the 44th London Critics’ Circle Awards, as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” both left empty handed while independent films swept the top categories. Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust-set horror-drama won Film of the Year, and Glazer was individually honored with Director of the Year as well. Celine Song’s 2023 Sundance hit “Past Lives,” another Best Picture nominee, won Foreign-Language Film of the Year.

“You don’t have to be so strong,” chants the singer Romy over a trance beat, leading viewers of How to Have Sex out of the film and into the closing credits. The irony is that after viewing Molly Manning Walker’s tale of adolescent exploration, it’s hard to come to any other conclusion than today’s youth must indeed steel themselves for an unforgiving landscape of choices and consequences. As teenaged Tara (Mia McKenna Bruce) learns on the big fat Greek quest to lose her virginity, childhood friendships and romantic relationships alike come under serious strain when the specter of sexuality enters the equation.

For most young actors lucky enough to experience a major career break, the simple act of navigating this exciting but daunting new world — be it back-to-back media arrangements or meetings with agents, casting directors and producers — is more than enough to deal with.
But Mia McKenna-Bruce, the star of buzzy Brit drama “How to Have Sex,” which launches in the U.S. on Feb. 2, has had to navigate all this while also juggling becoming a mother for the first time.
Not that the double whammy of these two momentous, life-changing experiences seems to trouble her. In fact, she claims they went hand-in-hand.
“I think the insanity of it all has actually worked really well,” the 26-year-old tells Variety.

If you’ve read this month’s preview earlier this week, you already know there are two very different wide releases this weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
First up, there’s the new Matthew Vaughn spy action-comedy “Argylle,” based on a recently released book by one Elly Conway, presumed to be a pseudonym for another famous author, who sold the rights to Vaughn to make this movie even before the book’s release just a few weeks back.
Going by the trailer, there’s a bit of a mystery in the book and movie surrounding the identity of the film’s titular secret agent, but Vaughn has another stacked cast, including Bryce Dallas Howard as “Conway” with Henry Cavill playing “Argylle,” and the likes of Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. All Tara (Mia McKenna-Bruce) wants to do is get to the coastal Greek town of Malia, get some quality time with her BFFs — Em (Enva Lewis) and Skye (Lara Peake) — and spend the next few days getting royally fucked up. This unholy trinity of 16-year-olds have just finished their final exams back in London, and now they’re heading to one of those sunbaked Mediterranean resorts favored by British teens looking to blow off steam. Molly Manning Walker was on a boat to Greece last May when she got a call to say she should probably turn around as soon as possible and get back to the Cannes Film Festival.
She’d already made a major splash in the south of France with her debut feature “How to Have Sex,” a cautionary tale following three British teenage girls on a wild and intoxicated summer holiday that takes a dark turn over the issue of sexual consent. The film, which had been picked up by Mubi prior to Cannes, became one of the breakout hits of the 2023 event, enjoying critical acclaim, standing ovations and earmarking Manning Walker as an exciting new cinematic voice. The festival had been, in no uncertain terms, a resounding success.
