Kim Godwin hoped to build ABC News’ future by cutting out some of its past.
Tasked, ostensibly, with shaking up a culture of the Disney-backed news organization that pit anchors against one another and led to claims of intolerable behavior behind the scenes, Godwin was supposed to revamp a storied journalism hub without losing any of the impetus that spurred employees to make shows such as “World News Tonight” and “Good Morning America” the most-watched in their category.
But the ABC News president, who was still working Monday after sending out a letter Sunday announcing her retirement following a shaky three-year reign, lost the support of much of the news operation by installing an array of senior executives who proved difficult to work with, while ousting veterans who had the respect of their colleagues. She also moved slowly, often taking weeks to make important decisions about programming and personnel, according...

Kim Godwin, the ABC News president who was the first Black woman to run a broadcast network news operation, is leaving the Disney unit amid increasing concern about the way she was managing the home of shows like “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.”
Godwin told staffers in a memo Sunday that she planned to “retire from broadcast journalism.” Her command had come under increasing scrutiny since a restructuring of ABC News and Disney’s ABC stations had her reporting directly to Debra OConnell, a Disney business veteran who is seen as a valued operator at the company. OConnell will lead ABC News for the foreseeable future, she told employees Sunday evening.
A Disney spokesperson declined to make executives available for additional comment or to respond to a query about what changes Godwin’s exit might mean for the executive’s immediate direct reports or the management of individual ABC News programs.

Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan will soon have to greet ABC’s morning viewers from a decidedly different locale.
As part of a larger move by Walt Disney Co., all of the company’s New York properties are slated to move in 2025 to a building in downtown New York in a neighborhood known as Hudson Square. That will include some programs already ensconced in well known studios, such as “GMA” and “Live with Kelly and Mark.” The move isn’t scheduled to take place for some time, but staffers are already coming to grips with how it might affect the program’s standing in TV’s non-stop morning-news wars.
“‘Good Morning America’ is defined by the strength of our team in front of and behind the camera, quality of our reporting, and the long, trusted relationship with our viewers,” ABC News said in a statement. “Moving all ABC...

Gio Benitez is hoping to marry the two jobs he holds for ABC News.
As the Disney unit’s transportation correspondent, he has been close to the recent movement into private space travel. As a newly named co-anchor for the weekend edition of ABC’s “Good Morning America,” he will handle stories that draw out viewers’ emotions and attention. He will continue to handle both roles.
“I’m a space geek,” says Benitez, “and I get to still keep on doing it.”
“I’ll tell you what he’s pitching,” says Simone Swink, the executive producer of ABC’s A.M. flagship. “He wants to be the first civilian and journalist on whatever the first mission to Mars is. That will be our ongoing conversation for the next five years.”

Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan have been named the new co-anchors of the ABC News program “GMA3: What You Need to Know.”
The pair’s promotion follows the exit of former GMA3 co-anchors Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, who made headlines after news of a romantic relationship surfaced publicly and an investigation was launched by the network. Robach and Holmes were taken off the air in December.
“After several productive conversations with Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes about different options, we all agreed it’s best for everyone that they move on from ABC News,” a spokesperson told TheWrap in January. “We recognize their talent and commitment over the years and are thankful for their contributions.”

ABC News has found the new anchors for GMA3, the early afternoon spinoff of Good Morning America.
ABC News president Kim Godwin said Thursday that the hour will be led by anchors Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan, joining Dr. Jen Ashton, the chief medical correspondent for ABC News, who has been a fixture on the hour for the past three years.
Morgan and Pilgrim have been among the anchors that have filled in over the last few months.
A former correspondent and anchor for CBS News and some of its local stations, Morgan joined ABC News in December 2022 as a Los Angeles-based correspondent. Pilgrim joined ABC News in 2015, and had been a correspondent and anchor for GMA‘s weekend edition.
Gio Benitez, ABC’s transportation correspondent, will join GMA‘s weekend edition as its new co-anchor, anchoring alongside Whit Johnson and Janai Norman.

Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan will be the new co-anchors of GMA3: What You Need to Know, which has been without permanent hosts since the exit of Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes.
The network also announced that Gio Benitez would join the Saturday and Sunday editions of Good Morning America as co-anchor, along with Whit Johnson and Janai Norman.
Pilgrim had been co-anchor of GMA on weekends, and Morgan filled in on GMA3 as the network sidelined Robach and Holmes amid revelations that they were in a romantic relationship. As the couple’s affair drew tabloid headlines, ABC News president Kim Godwin mulled what to do about the situation. GMA3 depends on the chemistry between the hosts, and when they were on the air, Robach and Holmes did not address their relationship. The network announced their departure in January.
Jennifer Ashton will continue on GMA3 as chief health and medical correspondent.

The reason for weatherman Rob Marciano’s lengthy Good Morning America absence has been allegedly “revealed”.
Since 2014, Marciano has been employed as ABC’s senior meteorologist, providing extensive weather coverage across the network.
But GMA viewers noticed that Marciano has not been presenting from the studio since November 2022, with many social media users wondering why this was.
It’s now being claimed that Marciano has been “banned” from New York’s Times Square Studios, where GMA is filmed, after allegedly making a colleague feel “uncomfortable”.
A source told Page Six that Marciano was accused of “improper” behaviour and “was punished for it”.
While the alleged incident has not been divulged, it’s been claimed by a separate source that it occurred in the wake of Marciano’s divorce from his wife, Eryn, which was announced in July 2022.
This source said Marciano was struggling with the stress caused by the divorce,...

Michael Strahan wasn’t nervous to go to space. He wasn’t antsy about playing in the most-watched event of the year. He’s not overwhelmed by being live in front of millions each morning. But receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Now that’s scary.
“I’m so nervous about this — of all the things in the world,” he says about the star he will receive on Jan. 23. “It’s beyond even my comprehension, knowing where I started and what this all signifies for me, it’s overwhelming.”
Where he started is a bit different than most NFL players; he didn’t begin playing football until his senior year of high school. One season was enough to get him a scholarship to Texas Southern University. He graduated in 1993 and headed to the NFL, signing with the New York Giants, the team he remained with for his entire 15-year career.

Never count out “Today” in the morning show wars.
The venerable NBC A.M. franchise has for weeks been losing a critical ratings category to its main rival, ABC’s “Good Morning America.” The ABC show has long been the most-watched broadcast TV morning-news program in the nation, while “Today” typically dominates among the viewers advertisers want most — people between 25 and 54. But for more than two months, that hasn’t been the case; “GMA” has taken the lead in both overall viewership and the ad demo.
Last week put the brakes on ABC’s progress. According to Nielsen, “Today” won more viewers between 25 and 54 than its ABC competitor, albeit during a stretch leading into the long holiday weekend when all three broadcast networks “retitled” their Friday programs so what were presumably lower-than-usual audience levels wouldn’t be lumped in with the rest of the week’s crowd.

ABC News has named Janai Norman as the new co-anchor for Good Morning America on Saturday and Sunday.
She will join co-anchors Whit Johnson and Eva Pilgrim.
Norman has been hosting GMA‘s “Pop News” over the weekend. She started at the network as an intern at News One in 2011 and later became a multiplatform reporter in the D.C. bureau before becoming an overnight anchor for World News Now and America This Morning.
“Janai is a versatile and talented journalist, whether she is anchoring at the desk, conducting a one-on-one interview with a newsmaker of the day or reporting in the field on breaking news,” ABC News president Kim Godwin said in a note to staff.
Here is Godwin’s note:

“Good Morning America” opened its broadcast Thursday with some of its top correspondents far from the show’s studio in New York’s Times Square. The ABC morning program is hoping to put similar distance between itself and one of its main competitors.
As “GMA” launched, viewers were told the show was coming to them live “from Times Square, Kyiv, Ukraine, and London.” The references were to Robin Roberts, who had just completed an interview with Olena Zelenska, Ukraine’s First Lady, and to Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes, the “GMA 3” co anchors who have been leading the show’s coverage of the Queen’s Jubilee in London. ABC secured some exclusive rights to cover the proceedings for U.S. media.

“Good Morning America” eked out a victory on a different battlefield in TV’s ongoing morning-news wars.
The ABC News program typically wins the biggest audience among morning-news programs, while NBC News rival “Today” typically dominated in the critical category of viewers between 25 and 54 — the demographic that governs how much advertisers pay for each show. Last week, however, “GMA” prevailed in both, the first time in more than four months that it has done so.
“It’s an incredible win as we deal with the challenges of still broadcasting and working during a pandemic,” says Simone Swink, executive producer of “Good Morning America.” “Our team remains laser-focused on delivering the best straightforward, relevant and engaging news. We love our viewers who join us every morning and make this possible!” NBC News could not be reached for immediate comment.

Quiana Burns’s leadership role at Tamron Hall is becoming permanent. The Good Morning America Weekend executive producer joined the syndicated daytime talk show as interim executive producer in October, shortly after Tamron Hall moved from ABC Entertainment to ABC News where it is overseen by the team of ABC News President Kim Godwin. It was Godwin who announced Burns’ official appointment today.
“Under her and Tamron’s leadership and vision, it has reached season highs in total viewership, performance in households and the W25-54 demo, and received an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Talk Show,” Godwin wrote in the internal memo.
Burns provided a steady hand on Tamron Hall, which had gone through multiple showrunners in its first two seasons. In November, the daytime talker was renewed for two more seasons, through 2024, by the ABC Owned Television Stations Group.

Disney has no plans to investigate how ABC News handled the accusation of sexual assault brought by a producer against her former boss, according to a recording of a staff meeting obtained by the Wall Street Journal.
“Good Morning America” executive producer Simone Swink told staffers earlier this week that an independent probe into former senior executive producer Michael Corn “is not happening at this time,” the Journal reported.
ABC News producer Kirstyn Crawford sued Corn and the network in August, accusing him of assault and ABC News of doing nothing when she raised the issue internally. She later amended her complaint to say that ABC News, in fact, retaliated against her after she complained.
A representative for ABC News did not immediately return a request for comment.

The Walt Disney Co. does not plan on launching an independent investigation of how ABC handled reports of sexual assault allegations against the former top producer for Good Morning America, according to a report.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the executive producer of GMA, Simone Swink, told staffers this week that such an investigation was not happening “at this time.”
Kim Godwin, the president of ABC News, had told staffers in August that she wanted an independent investigation of the allegations, which were made against Michael Corn, who departed his post abruptly in April.
The Journal, citing a recording of Swink’s staff meeting, reported that she had been informed of the decision by Peter Rice, chairman of general entertainment content for The Walt Disney Co., who said it was outside of his “sphere of influence” to ask for such a probe.

Simone Swink has been named executive producer of Good Morning America.
Swink, who has been with the show since 2010, is filling the top job following the departure in April of Michael Corn.
Corn, who is now president of Nexstar’s NewsNation, was accused last week of sexual assault in a lawsuit filed by Kirstyn Crawford, a producer on the show. She also claimed that a former ABC News staffer also accused Corn of sexual assault. Corn denied the claims.
Swink had been senior broadcast producer of the show, where she has been overseeing the GMA second hour. She originally joined the show as a writer.
“Simone is a dynamic, thoughtful and creative leader, experienced in collaborating across platforms,” ABC News president Kim Godwin wrote in a note to the staff. “I’m confident that she and the GMA team will continue to lead the show in new and innovative directions.

“Simone is a dynamic, thoughtful and creative leader, experienced in collaborating across platforms,” ABC News president Kim Godwin wrote in a note to the staff. “I’m confident that she and the GMA team will continue to lead the show in new and innovative directions.

ABC has named Simone Swink the new executive producer of “Good Morning America,” ABC News president Kim Godwin announced in a memo Sunday.
The promotion for Swink, who has worked on the morning news show since 2010, comes just days after her predecessor, former “GMA” senior executive producer Michael Corn, was accused of sexual assault by two ABC producers. Corn had left ABC in April to become president of news for NexStar’s NewsNation and has denied all allegations.
Swink began her career at ABC News as a writer for “This Week with Sam Donaldson & Cokie Roberts” and then “Nightline” at the network’s Washington bureau. She also helped launch an evening newscast for the National Geographic Channel and produced long-form segments for “NASCAR in Primetime.”

ABC News will turn to an insider to lead its flagship morning program, “Good Morning America,” one of the most critical roles in live television.
Simone Swink, a longtime senior staffer at the show, has been named its senior producer, according to a memo sent to employees by Kim Godwin, president of ABC News Sunday.
Swink takes a role which has been left vacant for months. The show, a pillar of the economics of both ABC and its parent company, Walt Disney, was previously supervised by Michael Corn, who left abruptly in April, and was recently accused of sexual harassment in a lawsuit filed last week. Corn has denied the allegations. ABC News has been sifting through candidates for the top job at “GMA” for weeks, and had considered a number of prominent executives from outside the company, according to people familiar with the process.

ABC News is moving closer to finding a new executive producer for its flagship “Good Morning America” broadcast after a weeks-long search, according to two people familiar with the matter, a critical decision for Kim Godwin, who was named president of the Walt Disney-backed unit in April.
Godwin, a former senior executive at CBS News, is said to be considering both internal and external candidates, and there is some hope her choice will become known over the next few weeks.
ABC News declined to make executives available for comment. The show’s executive producer slot has been open since the abrupt departure of ABC News veteran Michael Corn in April.

Robin Roberts worked from home for a good part of the pandemic while hosting America’s most-watched morning-news program. On Wednesday morning, she went back on the road.
Roberts kicked off a new months-long effort, “Rise and Shine,” at ABC’s “Good Morning America,” which will have its anchors and correspondents visiting all 50 states over the next few months as the nation emerges from coronavirus conditions, according to Simone Swink and Chris Brouwer, the program’s two interim executive producers. Viewers this morning saw Roberts visiting Dollywood, the Dolly Parton amusement park, in Pigeon Forge, Tn (Parton was there as well).
“There is this sense that America is getting its feet under it again,” said Brouwer, in an interview. “We felt it was important to go out and meet our viewers where they are.”

ABC is looking for a new producer to open the network for business each morning.
The abrupt departure of Michael Corn, the seasoned news producer who has managed the network’s flagship A.M. franchise, “Good Morning America,” since 2014, means ABC News is suddenly working a little harder to keep the program on its current path. “GMA” is the nation’s most-watched morning-news program, and is locked in a scorched-earth battle for dominance with NBC’s “Today,” which continues to command a lead among the viewers most coveted by advertisers in news programs, people between 25 and 54.
The job is a critical one at ABC and its parent company, Walt Disney Co. “GMA” generated $293.6 million in advertising in 2020, according to Kantar, a tracker of ad spending, compared with $357.6 million for NBC’s “Today” and $185.4 million for “CBS This Morning” on CBS. And the show has recently been expanding. In 2018, ABC News...
