Disney Entertainment TV is set to reinstate overall deals for creatives that were suspended during the WGA strike as early as Thursday, TheWrap has learned.
In mid-September, the company paused overall and first look deals across its subsidiaries, with Billy Porter, Yara Shahidi, Gina Rodriguez, “This Is Us” alum Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore, “Rebel” executive producer Marc Webb, “The Bear” EP Hiro Murai and FX Productions’ Stacey Sher among those impacted.

CBS Studios has suspended its term deals with three major producers, TheWrap has learned. Those impacted include the talk show host and celebrity Dr. Phil McGraw, “Kingdom Revolution”/”Flamin’ Hot” producer DeVon Franklin and “Dynasty”/”Nancy Drew” executive producer Lis Rowinski.
CBS will continue to cover the salary and benefits for the impacted assistants through the end of the strike or the end of 2023, an insider familiar with the deals told TheWrap. That timeline will depend on which comes first. Additionally, the term deals that haven’t been suspended by CBS Studios involve either alternative, unscripted or animated projects or some other non-wga activity.
Representatives for Franklin and Rowinski confirmed this story. However, representatives for McGraw did not respond by the time of publication.

The Apple TV+ crime drama “City on Fire,” which wrapped up its 8-episode first season two months ago, will not be getting a second season, TheWrap has confirmed.
Based on the novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg, “City on Fire” wasn’t listed as a limited series. But the story shown in Season 1 covered the entire book, which means viewers won’t be stuck with a never-resolved cliffhanger similar to Hulu’s 2020 “High Fidelity” adaptation.
Set in 2003, the story follows the aftermath of the shooting of a young student in Central Park, New York city. The investigation uncovers ties to a series of fires, the Manhattan music scene, and a secretive and wealthy real estate family.
Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the show was executive produced by Schwartz and Savage alongside Lis Rowinski and Jesse Peretz.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has opted not to pick up a second season of crime drama series City on Fire. The news comes a month and a half after Season 1 finished its eight-episode run on the streamer. It is not surprising as the adaptation of the novel of the same name didn’t get a lot of buzz the way other recent Apple TV+ entries like Silo and Hijack have.
While City on Fire was ordered and marketed as a drama series, not a limited series, and there were seeds for a second season planted in the finale, viewers will not be left hanging as Season 1 covered the arc in the book.

Apple TV+ will be premiering the eight-episode series City on Fire, inspired by Garth Risk Hallberg’s bestselling novel, on May 12, 2023. The first three episodes will be released simultaneously, followed by new episodes on Fridays. The season’s finale is set to air on June 16th.
City on Fire takes place in New York City, and in an interview with NPR in October 2015, author Hallberg – who grew up in North Carolina – explained why he chose NYC as the setting. “I fell in love with New York at some indeterminate point in my early years,” said Hallberg. “Something about the city captured my imagination in a way that even Middle-Earth and Narnia couldn’t — because it was somehow real.”
Hallberg added: “So I guess I was dreaming my way into it long before I realized that I was going to write about it.”

NYC’s messiest Instagram account is typing its “XOXOs” for the last time. “Gossip Girl,” the HBO Max series and sequel to the CW hit of the same name, has been canceled, the streamer announced Thursday. The news comes in the middle of the show’s Season 2 run, which began on December 1 and will conclude January 26.
In a tweet Thursday, showrunner and executive producer Joshua Safran stated he intends to shop “Gossip Girl” to other outlets.
“We are currently looking for another home, but in this climate, that might prove an uphill battle, and so if this is the end, at least we went out on the highest of highs,” Safran wrote in his tweet.
The series, which premiered in July 2021 to considerable hype, is a continuation of the original 2007 series of the same name created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Based on the young adult series by Cecily von Ziegesar,...

Hey, Upper Eastsiders: HBO Max’s “Gossip Girl” has been canceled, and its series finale will drop on the streamer Jan. 26.
Season 1 premiered in July of 2021, and though it received a critics’ score of 38 on Rotten Tomatoes, Variety‘s Caroline Framke praised it, writing the show “does immediately address one issue that plagued the previous ‘Gossip Girl’ by flipping it on its head in a way that energizes the new one. This time, there will be no guessing games as to who Gossip Girl might be — at least not for the audience.” Season 2 jumped higher on Rotten Tomatoes, but based on fewer reviews.
“We are very grateful to showrunner/executive producer Joshua Safran, and executive producers Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz for bringing us back to the Upper East Side and all the scandals at Constance Billard,” HBO Max said in a statement. “Although we are not moving forward with...

In Apple TV+’s City on Fire, which hails from executive producers and showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, a suburban teenager must unravel the mystery of his friend’s murder after she’s shot in Central Park on Fourth of July in 2003.
The series, which is set for a May 12 premiere, is based on the novel of the same name that takes place in 1970s New York — a time of severe financial crisis and widespread panic in the city due to a string of shootings (known as the Son of Sam murders). The show jumps forward in time to another period of uncertainty in New York post-9/11.
“We felt like, while a fascinating period, [that era is] well trodden territory. We were really interested in that post-9/11, Occupy Wall Street [era] in New York. Obviously, the book culminates in the blackout of ’77. There was a massive blackout in 2003. So creatively, that storyline lined up.

The CW’s “Nancy Drew” spin-off “Tom Swift” has been canceled at the network after one season. The CBS Studios show, which premiered May 31, will finish its Season 1 run but will not be returning to the broadcast network, TheWrap has confirmed.
While the cancellation comes amid poor viewership numbers and is one of the network’s lowest-rated series on linear and digital, “Tom Swift” is the latest in a long line of shows to be axed by the network, which canceled such programs like the popular “Legacies,” “Batwoman” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.”
The wave of cancellations comes amid the CW’s looming sale as parent companies Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery plan to divest from the joint venture and focus on bringing their best series in-house to their respective streaming services nationally and internationally. CEO Mark Pedowitz said in a conference call with reporters in May that “none of these were easy decisions.

The CW’s wave of series cancellations is continuing into the summer.
The network has pulled the plug on its Nancy Drew spinoff Tom Swift after a single season. The CBS Studios series, which premiered on May 31, will play out the remainder of its order but won’t return to the broadcast network.
Tom Swift is the 11th series The CW has canceled in the 2021-22 season, the most it has cut in a decade. The surge in cancellations comes as the network’s owners, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, are looking to sell the Mark Pedowitz-led broadcaster; local TV giant Nexstar, which owns a number of CW affiliates, is the leading candidate and, per a Wall Street Journal report this week, will take a 75 percent stake in the network, with Wbd and Paramount retaining 12.5 percent each.

The rest of the characters were cast after the project was picked up to series in August.

HBO Max has renewed the “Gossip Girl” revival for a second season, proclaiming “record viewership over its first weekend on the platform.” The 12-episode first season has been broken up into two parts, and its second six episodes will roll out in November. Using the vague language typical of streaming services, HBO Max called “Gossip Girl” its “best launch for a Max Original Drama series this year” in the renewal announcement.
The renewal also touted “Gossip Girl” as a social media phenomenon: “The series had 15 billion total social impressions at launch and the series gained around 5.2 billion impressions from content inspired by the series on TikTok.”
A representative from HBO Max said Thursday that the number of episodes for Season 2, as well as when production will begin are still to be announced.

The CW has given a straight-to-series order to Tom Swift, based on the classic book series Tom Swift, with a twist, for the 2021-22 season. Tom Swift comes from Nancy Drew co-creators/executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, their Fake Empire banner and CBS Studios.
Tom Swift, a spinoff of Nancy Drew, was one of two projects that had remained in contention after the network had made decisions on the bulk of its six 2021 pilots, handing series orders only to Naomi and All American: Homecoming in May.
The CBS Studios/Fake Empire-produced project did not do a traditional backdoor pilot; instead the character Tom Swift, played by Tian Richards, appeared in a Nancy Drew episode titled “The Celestial Visitor,” which was directed by Ruben Garcia, and the network also ordered a pilot script.

The show is a spinoff of the CW series “Nancy Drew.” Tian Richards made his first appearance as the character in the “Nancy Drew” episode “The Celestial Visitor” during that show’s second season. “Tom Swift” follows the serialized adventures of the titular Black, gay, billionaire inventor, who is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father. Tom takes to the road on a quest to unravel the truth, leaving behind the comforts of his usual moneyed lifestyle, all while fighting to stay one step ahead of an Illuminati-scale group hell-bent on stopping him.

HBO Max on Thursday revealed the reboot will return in November with Part Two of its 12-episode first season with the final six episodes.
No definite date that month has been set, but hey, at least we know it's coming back this year, and after Gossip Girl (2021) Season 1 Episode 6, we gave a lot to ponder until then.
Developed by showrunner Joshua Safran, a writer and executive producer on the original series, this extension of the pop culture classic takes us back to the Upper East Side finding a new generation of New York private school teens being introduced to social surveillance nine years after the original blogger's website went dark.
The series is based on the bestselling novels by Cecily von Ziegesar and the original show, developed by Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage, which ran from 2007-2012 on The CW.

HBO Max said Thursday that its Gossip Girl reboot will return in November for Part 2 of its first season with the final six episodes. A specific date was not announced.
Like the original series, the new iteration of Gossip Girl, written by showrunner Joshua Safran, is based on the book by Cecily von Ziegesar and the original show, developd by Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage, which ran from 2007-2012 on The CW. Nine years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens is introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The series explores just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.
The first six episodes of the series premiered July 8 to become the best launch for a Max Original series this year. All six episodes are available for streaming on HBO Max.
