The box office can be an institution of simple pleasures. Hollywood releases the story of a rampaging bear drugged out of its mind and — what do you know? — the people roll out.
“Cocaine Bear” drew a solid $8.6 million opening day gross from 3,534 theaters, a figure that includes $2 million in Thursday previews. That places the Universal release ahead of projections heading into the weekend, which had the gory comedy pegged at a debut between $15 million and $17 million. A fun marketing campaign and a killer premise have given the film a strong position, with a debut north of $21 million now in the cards.
That would mark an auspicious kick-off for “Cocaine Bear,” which carries a production budget of $35 million. Reviews have been a bit all over the place; the film carries a 51% approval rating from top critics on review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences are also a bit lukewarm, as the film...

Jesus Revolution is the retelling of Pastor Greg Laurie‘s time in California during the 70s’ Jesus Movement. Joel Courtney plays Greg Laurie, Kelsey Grammer plays Chuck Smith and Anna Grace Barlow plays Kathy Laurie.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Courtney and Barlow reveal what it was like working with Grammer.
“I think every moment is a moment that you remember working with Kelsey,” Courtney began. “He is a legend like there are no two ways about it. He is so talented, he has been working so consistently, I mean, and just like a mind-boggling amount of time at such a high caliber of excellence that, I mean, working with him, it was kind of like unbelievable. It was unreal and like every day like going in just knowing like that was probably going to be some of my best work because he was on the other side of that scene with me was,...

I had a great time talking to the cast of the faith-based and reality-based drama “Jesus Revolution” taken from the novel of the same name by Greg Laurie about his experience in the Jesus movement in California during the 1970s. Half a century ago Hollywood was frantically trying to figure out the newly-dominant “youth market.” Since some of that market had recently found Jesus, there was a brief spate of related films: Zefferelli’s hippie-fied St. Francis biopic “Brother Sun, Sister Moon,” adapted stage musicals “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Godspell,” the Billy Graham-produced “A Time to Run” chief among them. But as the “Jesus Movement” got absorbed into more mainstream institutions, the brief vogue flickered out.
For a moment there, however, counterculture and Christ had a groovy thing going on, one that promised both salvation for those who’d gone overboard on sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll, as well as a healthy shakeup of churches that had lost touch with younger generations. Dramatizing that moment is “Jesus Revolution,” an engaging, upbeat new effort from co-directors Jon Erwin (“I Can Only Imagine”) and Brent McCorkle (“Unconditional”), adapted from Greg Laurie’s memoir.

Snow Falls opens with a warning sign, a pair of ravens sitting on the sign welcoming the characters to the town of Snow Falls. A bigger warning sign for the viewer however should be the squabbling going on inside their vehicle. Complaints about someone studying, somebody sitting with their feet on the dash, or someone else not wearing a seat belt. The kind of pointless bitching that makes you wonder why these people hang out together.
But the five of them, Kit, Em, Eden, Andy and River are on their way to spend New Year’s Eve at a massive “cabin” owned by River’s family. “This is your second home?” “Third if you count the one we’re building on Martha’s Vinyard”.

Snow Falls is a horror film directed by Colton Tran starring Jonathan Bennett, Patrick Fabian and Victoria Moroles.
A low budget film about some young people isolated in a log cabin that is just a horror film about young people, evolves as that and behaves as that, simply along the lines of pre-established parameters.
It is up to scratch technically and rhythmically, but the script falls short.
Storyline
Some friends are trapped in a winter storm. With no electricity and barely any food, they will be prey to terror, paranoia and deep dread about the snow that surrounds them.
Review Snow Falls (2023)
Five young middle class (upper middle class) drinking shots of whiskey and enjoying their youth in a horror film. We have seen the pattern stated so many times in horror films that right from the beginning we feel a certain weariness in spite of the good presentation in the vein of The Shining.

"The weather outside is frightful" takes on an all-too-real meaning for a group of friends celebrating New Year's Eve at an isolated cabin in Colton Tran's Snow Falls, and ahead of the horror film's January 17th Digital and On Demand release via Lionsgate, we have a look at the movie's chilling trailer.

Synopsis: "This terrifying wintertime horror tale will chill you to the bone. "What if the snow is contaminated?" Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Snow Falls, the latest from young filmmaker Colton Tran. This one is being released direct-to-vod in January and hasn't played at any festivals, which should be a pretty good indication of the quality. After a winter storm strands five friends staying in a remote cabin for New Years Eve with no power and little food, disorientation slowly claims their sanity as each of them succumbs to a fear that the snow itself (that they ate as snow cones) may be contaminated or somehow… evil. But maybe it's not really the snow?? The film stars Victoria Moroles, Anna Grace Barlow , Johnny Berchtold, Jonathan Bennett, and Patrick Fabian. This looks really cheesy and cheap, not surprised they are dumping it in January. How much you want to bet all this happening is just in their heads?...

"There is an entire generation searching… just in all the wrong places." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Jesus Revolution, set in the 1970s based on real events. This is opening in theaters nationwide in February, which means they're hopeful it will find a big audience. The film tells the true story of a national spiritual awakening in the late 60s / early 70s and its origins within a community of teenage hippies from Southern California. This is about a divided moment in US history when people came together by checking their preconceptions at the door – and formed a movement by listening to each other, looking beyond their own beliefs. This revival of radical and newfound love led to what Time Magazine, in 1971, dubbed a "Jesus Revolution." Has it all been forgotten since then? The film stars Joel Courtney as Greg, Anna Grace Barlow, Jonathan Roumie,...

Exclusive: Producer and bestselling author DeVon Franklin has found his first major film role in Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company’s Jesus Revolution. He joins an ensemble that also includes Kelsey Grammer, Joel Courtney, Anna Grace Barlow, Jonathan Roumie, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Ally Ioannides, Julia Campbell, Nic Bishop and Jolie Jenkins, as previously announced.
The film set in the 1970s watches as a young Greg Laurie (Courtney) sets out to redefine truth through all means of liberation, and instead, meets Lonnie Frisbee (Roumie), a charismatic hippie street preacher. Laurie and Frisbee, along with Pastor Chuck Smith (Grammer), open the doors of Smith’s languishing church to an unexpected revival by way of rock and roll, newfound love, and a twist of faith leading to a Jesus Revolution that changed the world. Franklin will play Josiah, a New York news reporter covering a story on the magnitude of the movement unfolding.
Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle (Unconditional) are directing from a script by Erwin and Jon Gunn. Kevin Downes and Jon and Andrew Erwin are producing alongside Josh Walsh (The Jesus Music) and Daryl Lefever (Woodlawn).
“Anyone who knows DeVon knows he is one of the most respected and successful producers in the industry, but they also know his devotion and commitment to inspiring people through entertainment,” said director Jon Erwin. “It is part of his DNA, and we are privileged that someone who is usually behind the scenes has graciously agreed to step in front of the camera for us for this important role and this story.”
“I was excited and nervous when they approached me to act,” added Franklin, “yet once I read the script, I knew I had to be part of bringing this powerful true story to the screen.”
Franklin serves as President and CEO of Franklin Entertainment, a production company boasting first-look deals with Paramount Pictures and CBS TV Studios. He has been the driving force behind some of Hollywood’s most successful inspirational content, including the soon-to-be-released movie Flamin’ Hot for Searchlight and the television series Kingdom Business for BET+. In addition to his work as a producer, Franklin is the author of multiple bestselling books. His Audible Original, It Takes a Woman—a deeply personal look into the tragedy that transformed his family’s life—was released in April.
Franklin serves the Hollywood community at large as Vice President of the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. The LA-based USC grad is repped by WME and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Big Leap Season 1 finale “We Make Our Own Light.”] The finale of The Big Leap (the show within the Fox show) hit a few snags (including a blackout and a couple of dancers falling through a trap door), but it was a success and they’ve even started talking about plans for Season 2. As for whether we’ll see any of that come to fruition, that has yet to be seen. Over its 11 episodes — executive producer Liz Heldens told TVLine “it was always going to be” that — viewers watched as amateur dancers prepared for a big production of Swan Lake, followed the very complicated relationships of everyone involved in the show, and heard quite a few times (including in the finale) about how they wanted a Season 2. Nick (Scott Foley) was already planning a major storyline for it: Brittney (Anna Grace Barlow) is pregnant with Reggie’s (Ser’Darius Blain) baby,...

Fox launched a couple of new hour scripted series last season but, due to low ratings, didn't end up keeping either of them. Will the network's newest effort, The Big Leap, be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
A musical dramedy series, The Big Leap TV show stars Scott Foley, Teri Polo, Piper Perabo, Simone Recasner, Ser'Darius Blain, Jon Rudnitsky, Raymond Cham Jr., Mallory Jansen, Kevin Daniels, and Anna Grace Barlow. Described as "big-hearted and rowdy," this scripted series follows a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck people who attempt to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show that builds to a live production of Swan Lake. What this group of underdogs lacks in dance training, they make up for with their edge, wit, and desire to reimagine an iconic story to fit their own mold.

Newcomer Simone Recasner is proud to represent body diversity in the upcoming Fox comedy The Big Leap, something she wishes she’d seen on TV growing up.
“Playing Gabby, she’s somebody who I can relate to on such a profoundly deep level,” Recasner shared during the show’s TCA press day on Wednesday. “We’re meeting her at a time where she’s decided to do the exact opposite of what the world and her brain and everybody really have told her how to act her whole life. And so, having this chance to represent somebody that frankly, I didn’t have growing up… .”
She continued: “I couldn’t ever see myself being on network television as an actor because I didn’t see myself represented. So when this story came around and they were real about having a big, curvy, plus-size body dance — because there are amazing curvy...

There isn’t too much drama but there is plenty of warm group atmosphere in “Dramarama,” the autobiographical first feature from writer-director Jonathan Wysocki that’s set in 1994 at a last gathering between high-school friends.
The religious background of these teens means “Dramarama” is treading in the footsteps of Stephen Cone, whose own movies in this sort of milieu, including “The Wise Kids” and “Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party,” set a patiently humanistic and non-judgmental tone that Wysocki’s film follows to a certain extent, but with a far faster pace.
“Dramarama” begins with a slight misstep as it introduces its protagonist, Gene (Nick Pugliese), flexing in front of a mirror in his bedroom and then reacting with distaste to the sound of his mother’s voice outside the door as she asks him if he is going to church. Wysocki has Pugliese stare straight into the camera after Gene dismisses his mother for us,...

"Boys are so emotional." 1091 Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie coming-out comedy titled Dramarama, from writer / director Jonathan Wysocki making his feature directorial debut after years of work in the industry. This premiered at festivals last year including at Outfest Los Angeles and BFI Flare in London, and will be out on VOD in August. Set in 1994, a closeted teen struggles to part ways with his four high school drama nerd friends at their final slumber party before leaving for college. Gene wants to come out of the closet, but is terrified of what his sheltered friends might think. Dramarama stars Anna Grace Barlow, Danielle Kay, Megan Suri, Nick Pugliese, and Nico Greetham. This seems to be a made-by-drama-nerds for-drama-nerds production, which is all good! It does have a bit of a John Hughes feel to it. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jonathan Wysocki's Dramarama,...
