At the Louisiana Right to Life Forum on Nov. 15, 2013, Mike Johnson — still lawyer, and not yet a public official — spoke about his efforts challenging the Department of Health and Human Services’ contraceptive mandate, a provision of the Affordable Care Act that required employers to provide birth control coverage as part of their insurance plans.
In his view, Johnson explained, certain types of birth control are methods of abortion.

Anyone living under a rock over the past eight months, blissfully unaware that the country mismanaged the coronavirus outbreak and caused thousands of unnecessary deaths, would do well to watch “Totally Under Control.” Churned out by prolific documentarian Alex Gibney with co-directors Suzanne Hillinger and Ophelia Harutyunyan over the last few months, this infuriating overview of the government’s response to the virus isn’t revelatory or groundbreaking, but
“Totally Under Control” is far from the first documentary to tackle coronavirus fallout (recent efforts “76 Days” and Ai Weiwei’s “Coronation” reveal the struggle inside Wuhan), but it’s the first serious assessment outside of nightly news shows to illustrate how much America bungled its response. Gibney and his collaborators fold in a lot of material into two hours, from the tick-tock of CDC efforts to downplay the virus and Donald Trump’s lunacy in conflicting science at every turn,...

Drama critics have a word for Covid-19, courtesy of the ancient Greeks: “nemesis.” In theater, this useful term applies to the inevitable downfall that awaits the wicked, the prideful and the overly confident. Decades from now, historians will look back on the coronavirus outbreak as the thing that derailed President Donald J. Trump, and perhaps the “re-greatening” America in the process.
Joining the situation in medias res, such dire predictions may seem premature — although that doesn’t stop investigative documentary superstar Alex Gibney (“Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room”) from rushing his righteously compelling exposé “Totally Under Control” out before the election. That timing tells you everything about what Gibney hopes to achieve: The goal isn’t to be definitive so much as influential, without compromising the facts, which Trump has gone to extraordinary lengths to obscure.

As a former secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, serving under President Obama, and a former governor of Kansas, during the George W. Bush era, Kathleen Sebelius has a unique perspective on the challenges posed by a pandemic, the urgency of coordinating a federal response, and the rightful role of states in a moment of national crisis.
In describing the Trump administration’s reaction to the coronavirus outbreak, Sebelius leans on words like “terrifying,” “head-spinning,” and “total nightmare.”

Over the years, she steadily made a name for herself on NBC's Saturday Night Live, impersonating a variety of political figures like Hillary Clinton, Kellyanne Conway, Betsy DeVos, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Angela Merkel, Kathleen Sebelius, Jeff Sessions, Elizabeth Warren and Debbie Wasserman Schultz. McKinnon, who won her second Primetime Emmy Award in September, graces the cover of Vanity Fair's November issue (on national newsstands Oct. 10). President Donald Trump isn’t just known for his tweets, but also, his manner of tweeting. He’s got a distinct voice, and favorite words that he loves to sprinkle throughout his 140 characters. The word that’s most synonymous with Trump? The label that’s become his go-to insult?
Sad.
Trump doesn’t hesitate to label something sad. In fact, he says it rather often, in both a serious way (when something actually brings him sorrow) or as an insult (when it’s a synonym for pathetic). By our count, he’s said it 64 times on Twitter alone. These are the people,...

Hobby Lobby filed the suit against former Sec. of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, charging that it violated.

Washington (AP) — Little was sacred when President Barack Obama tossed out playful but pointed jokes Saturday night — not even his own health care plan. "We rolled out healthcare.gov. That could have gone better," Obama said in remarks at the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner. "In 2008 my slogan was 'Yes we can.' In 2013 my slogan was 'Control-alt-delete.'" One the plus side, the president said, "they did turn the launch of healthcare.gov into one of the year's biggest movies." On a screen flashed the poster for "Frozen." When a video Obama introduced failed to play properly, he asked, "Does anybody know how to fix this?" To laughter, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stepped up and said: "I got this. I see it all the time." In the wake of the problems with the website, Sebelius has announced she is stepping down. The annual dinner has...

Bill O'Reilly was a guest on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Friday (Nov. 15). Although there to promote his new book, "Killing Jesus," O'Reilly mostly talked about what he usually talks about: politics. He and Jay Leno managed to work in Obamacare, Rob Ford and even the 2016 elections during a short interview.
Shocking to absolutely no one, O'Reilly did not proclaim himself to be a fan of Obamacare. He used his normal buzzwords like "self-reliant" and "nanny state" in describing all of the reasons the new healthcare system is likely to fail. But the conservative pundit and TV host also threw in a few pointed and nasty jabs.

With the Olympics were on NBC last August, CNN drew just 62,000 among the 25-54s that Friday. Not only was CNN behind rivals Fox News Channel (396,000) and MSNBC (127,000) but also it did worse than sister station Hln (93,000) and CNBC (79,000). The most watched show on CNN last night was Piers Morgan Live at 9 Pm which got a soft 83,000 in the demo and 340,000 viewers overall.

The good thing about Edward Norton‘s inaugural Saturday Night Live hosting experience: The Fight Clubber was fully committed to every sketch, no matter how mediocre, put before him. The not-so-good thing about the Halloween-adjacent episode: Norton had a whole lotta mediocre to work with.

Washington — A Capitol ceremony honoring Rep. John Dingell for becoming Congress's longest-serving member in history featured the expected, such as praise and jokes from Vice President Joe Biden and House Speaker John Boehner. It included the unexpected – a pointed pitch to a roomful of congressional leaders and lawmakers by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick for controversial immigration legislation.
Yet it was hard to top a performance by singer Mary Wilson backed up by a vaguely synchronized chorus line that included House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the actress Lynda Carter.
Wilson, an original member of The Supremes, a marque 1960s group of Detroit-based Motown Records, sang a brief set of songs climaxed with their upbeat hit "Stop in the Name of Love." Pelosi, Sebelius and Carter – along with Dingell's wife, Deborah, and Rep. Donna Edwards, D-Calif. – formed an unlikely dance line behind her, singing and...

Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic University in the United States, founded more than 200 years ago by Jesuit priests. But one of the university's most famous alumni, William Peter Blatty, the Academy Award-winning author of "The Exorcist," doesn't think the school is particularly Catholic anymore.
Because of this, on May 31, Blatty and a group of over 1200 others in the Father King Society to Make Georgetown Honest delivered a petition to the Archdiocese of Washington, requesting that Georgetown either comply with Church doctrine or that the university no longer be called "Catholic."
According to Manuel A. Miranda, the legal counsel involved in the petition, it contains "198 pages, 476 footnotes, 91 appendices, 124 witness statements, a commissioned 120-page institutional audit of Georgetown, a sworn certification of facts, and legal opinion." The petition also details more than 100 alleged scandals from the past two decades.
What is the argument being made here? Blatty and the petition cite...

On Tuesday, House Republicans pressured Health and Human Services Sec. Kathleen Sebelius to intervene on behalf of 10-year-old Sarah Murnaghan who will die unless she receives a lung transplant in the coming weeks. Rep. Tom Price (R-ga) urged Sebelius to bypass regulations that require the lung she needs to be offered to adults before it is offered to children. "It simply takes your signature,” Price said.

A suffering 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl with cystic fibrosis could die within the next few weeks without a lung transplant. The real tragedy for Sarah Murnaghan is that it’s not the lack of organs available that is holding her back from getting the immediate procedure she needs — it’s the law.
Sarah Murnaghan may not live much longer unless she gets a new set of lungs. She’s at the top of the list for any pediatric lungs that might become available in her area, but for the time being only adult lungs are available. While doctors think modified adult lungs would work for Sarah, she doesn’t have access to the available organs unless every adult waiting for lungs in the area turns them down, creating an unimaginable barrier that could result in a tragic death.

President Obama wants people to pay closer attention to mental illness, and he's turning to Hollywood for help. The two-step process starts with a White House summit Monday, with Vice President Joe Biden, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Education Secretary Arne Duncan. The goal of the summit is to start a national conversation about mental health, removing any stigma around it so afflicted people will feel free to seek help. Washington — Actors Bradley Cooper and Glenn Close are among those gathering Monday at the White House for a conference on mental health, organized as part of President Barack Obama's response to last year's shooting massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.
Although the one-day conference was a response to gun violence, its agenda is much broader and includes discussion of insurance coverage for mental health care and substance abuse, recognizing the signs of mental illness in young people and improved access to services for veterans. The overall goal is reducing the stigma of mental health problems and encouraging those who are struggling to get help.
Obama plans to deliver opening remarks in the East Room and Vice President Joe Biden, the president's point man on gun violence, is scheduled to close it from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Around 150 invited attendees include mental health advocates and patients, educators, health care providers,...

White House press secretary Jay Carney has been under serious pressure to handle the press' grilling over the big scandals facing the Obama administration this past week, and when people get particularly stressed, they tend to do a lot of deflecting. In Carney's case, he attempted to dismiss all the criticism of the Benghazi, IRS, and AP scandals (as well as an emerging one about Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius) by digging up what Bill O'Reilly would call an "old canard": birtherism.

"D.C. has always been sexy!"
That's what "Scandal" star Kerry Washington said when I asked if she thinks D.C. is especially hot right now, given the convergence of buzz-worthy television shows set here now.
In addition to "Scandal," there's "House of Cards," "Homeland," "The Americans" and "Veep," and their stars roamed the well-appointed rooms and terraces of the French Ambassador's Residence for the Vanity Fair-Bloomberg post-White House Correspondents Dinner party late Saturday night.
They mingled with a glittering crowd of fellow actors, media heavyweights and real-life power brokers, among them New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, White House press secretary Jay Carney, Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, former Rep. Jane Harman, Sen. Joe Manchin, Ambassador Susan Rice, Hhs Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Sen. Mark Warner and HuffPost guest Gov. Chris Christie.

Topic A among the Hollywood crowd was President Barack Obama's masterful speech at the dinner.

Senate Democrats held a closed door meeting with major Glbt activist groups like the Human Rights Campaign to discuss things like Doma, Enda, and the Ssia. No reporters were allowed in, so it's hard to tell if they had any real progress to report.
Federal investigators have found that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius violated federal law when she spoke about reelecting President Obama at a Human Rights Campaign event. The Hatch Act prevents certain government officials from acting in a political capacity. The findings have been referred to President Obama, who is not expected to act on them.

Ruth Reichl has spent most of her adult life -- and all of her career -- putting her experiences with food into words. As a former food guru for the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times, the celebrated editor-in-chief of Gourmet Magazine until its confounding demise in 2009, and now editorial advisor for the Web's Gilt Taste, Reichl's writings have advised and tantalized international foodies for decades.
When Bravo offered her a judging stint on Season 3 of Top Chef Masters, Reichl signed on as a lark and enjoyed it so much that she's back for the series' fourth session now airing on Wednesdays. And thanks to her decades-long reign at the epicenter of food culture, she's found plenty of familiar faces in the new crop of contestants.
"A lot of these chefs are people whose careers I know well," Reichl tells Zap2it, "so for me, it's an interesting group.
