My buddy Phil Nugent, who writes for the Onion's A.V. Club (among other places), often complains about genre movies and TV shows, saying that it's become harder and harder to avoid the question of "Why don't the protagonists just call the cops on their cell phones?" Munger Road tries to head this off at the pass early on: The four teenagers at its center spend the majority of the film in a remote location where no one can get any bars (in fact, at one point a character leaves said location "because I remember getting bars a few miles back"). It's a pretty nice nod to the modern realities of horror writing/filmmaking, and writer/director Nicholas Smith's debut feature isn't quite as adept at all aspects of its storytelling,...

Chicago – Local writer/director Nicholas Smith, who set and shot his lauded indie horror flick “Munger Road” in St. Charles, Illinois, has some undeniable talent. I think his debut gets a little lost in the final act but there is a lot to like about this little movie for even those with no connection to its Chicago roots. You’re going to be deluged with options this Halloween season for your horror-loving time. Take a trip to “Munger Road.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
“Munger Road” has a little bit of everything. The great Dann Gire is quoted on the back of the case comparing the film to “Blair Witch Project,” “Halloween” and “Psycho” and Smith compares it to “Jaws” in one of the mini-featurettes included on the DVD. A film with such varied influences often falls victim to cluttered ideas and a lack of tonal consistency. And so it’s remarkable how deftly...

Munger Road Written and Directed by: Nicholas Smith Starring: Bruce Davison, Randall Batinkoff and Trevor Morgan When I see the words “based on true events” my interest is immediately piqued. Deep down, I know that term is used very, very loosely, but for some reason it amps up the fear factor on almost any horror film I watch. I can be watching the most mundane, run of the mill movie, but if it is preceded by that tantalizing phrase, my skin crawls just a little more than usual. Munger Road (recently released on DVD and VOD) benefits from this phenomenon. It’s a fairly innocuous genre film that seems spookier than it should because of the urban legend behind it. People around the Chicago area are familiar with the tale. As legend has it, Munger Road (located in Elgin, 35 miles Nw of Chicago) has a stretch of road featuring some railroad tracks,...

Director/writer: Nicholas Smith. Cast: Bruce Davison, Randall Batinkoff, Trevor Morgan, Brooke Peoples, Hallock Beals, Lauren Storm and Art Fox. Munger Road is an indie production from first time director Nicholas Smith. The film follows four college students as they try to frighten themselves on or near Halloween. Much of the film takes place during nighttime and the film is effective in creating suspense. Munger Road is also an homage to John Carpenter's Halloween for a variety of reasons. The Halloween settings, escaped killer and a character of authority acting as both a narrator and an investigator make this film almost a direct homage to this earlier horror classic. The film's story begins with four college students: Corey (Trevor Morgan), Joe (Brooke Peoples), Scott (Hallock Beals) and Rachael (Lauren Storm). They are heading out on a double date to a local set of train tracks. It was here that a tragedy occurred.

Nicholas Smith's urban legend chiller, Munger Road hits DVD and VOD (I'm inclined to believe this one should have earned a theatrical release) on September 11th courtesy of Freestyle Digital Media, and we've got a look at the picture's brand new trailer. I'll admit I haven't heard all too much about the film, but early screenings are yielding some noteworthy praise (even Roger Ebert gifted the film a three star rating), and this new slot has my blood really boiling!

Ghosts can at times be very handy. At least in the sense of pushing your car across railroad tracks and out of the way of a speeding train. At least that's how they roll down on Munger Road, and you'll get to see exactly what we're talking about soon!

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The Pirates! Band Of Misfits Trailer Any animated film that wants to incorporate nudists and leprosy in its promotional materials has my backing. Director Peter Lord,...

If the thought of spooky ghost kids laying their spectral hands upon your car while it's settled over train tracks spooks you, believe me when I tell you that you're not alone. Munger Road is one of Illinois' most haunted places, and a new featurette has hit online to give you a look at the movie based upon the legend.
Coming to theatres on September 30th is Nicholas Smith's Munger Road starring Bruce Davison, Randall Batinkoff, Trevor Morgan, Brooke Peoples, Hallock Beals and Lauren Storm.
Details are scant at the moment, but we do know that the film centers on two small-town cops who begin a search for four teens who go missing the night before the town's annual Scarecrow Festival.
A popular Munger Road tale says at one time a school bus filled with children stalled on the train tracks was hit by a train, which killed everyone inside.

Fans of the “found footage” subgenre should be in cinematic heaven at this point. Every other day there’s at least one new movie making the promotional rounds, which is exceptionally cool if you dig that sort of thing. Nicholas Smith’s upcoming thriller “Munger Road” follows a group of teenagers who are on their way to Las Vegas to celebrate their high school graduation. As per usual, they end up in a perilous situation involving railroad tracks and lots of supernatural tomfoolery. Fortunately for us, they happened to capture everything on video. How impossibly lucky is that? If this sort of thing interests you, be sure to investigate the trailer below. There are some places in this world you just shouldn't go. Every story or urban legend always begins with at least a shred of truth, and should you have the balls enough to travel down Munger Road, you may just find out how scary reality can be.
