Preternaturally patient with all the needy, flustered, and demanding adults around her, Priscilla Diaz is also childish (righteously) and astute (luckily).

P-Star Rising, an inspirational story of the musical ambitions of a young girl and her father, was a big hit at the Tff 2009 Drive-In, where the movie screened and P-Star performed before an audience of thousands. It was a much more intimate crowd last Monday night at Tribeca Cinemas, where Gabriel Noble's film kicked off the Tribeca Cinemas Doc Series. (If you missed P-Star Rising, you can catch it February 9 on PBS.) During the Q and A after the film, Priscilla Star and her father Jesse Diaz were on hand, as were director Noble and producer Marjan Tehrani. A "fearless" and radiant Priscilla handled the crowd with aplomb, and an apparent maturity beyond her years. When asked about life after the movie, she explained, "I write music now. From the team behind the Tribeca Film Festival, a new series entitled Tribeca Cinemas Presents: Doc Series will kick off on January 25. The debut film in the bi-monthly Monday evening schedule will be Gabriel Noble's P-Star Rising, which was a big hit at the Tff 2009 Drive-In. In the early '80s, Jesse Diaz was a rising star in the hip-hop world. Now a broke single father in Harlem with two children to support, Jesse finds a shot at redemption in his 9-year-old daughter Priscilla Star, a precocious and immensely talented rapper. With P-Star Rising director Gabriel Noble follows four years of father-daughter ups and downs as they navigate the grit and the glamour of the music biz. From sit-downs with image consultants to the elation of spending that big signing bonus, Priscilla always remains a magnetic figure with a resolve and way of talking that belies her young age.

In what world is a nine-year-old girl a wildly talented rapper who can hold her own on the streets and in the club? Where can she go with that sort of singular talent? And this is a true story? A documentary? In Noble's touching, fascinating work, we get the backstory on the now-teenage Priscilla Star Diaz, who's currently charming fans on the 2009 reboot of the classic children's show, The Electric Company. We meet her family: shy older sister Solsky and her father, single dad Jesse Diaz, a former rising star of hip-hop who finds himself broke and living in a shelter with his two young girls. Most importantly, we get her story: how a young rapping prodigy navigates the music business, and how she deals with ...
