There’s a point in recent Lucero shows when frontman Ben Nichols pulls back from his anthems of last calls and heartbreaks and leads the band in “Hello, My Name Is Izzy,” a lighthearted country shuffle penned for his two-year-old daughter. Sometimes she even comes onstage, earmuffs on, to dance.
That moment held a special joy for Nichols at the band’s annual Lucero Family Block Party in Memphis in April, where they celebrated their 20th anniversary over two days with support from friends like Turnpike Troubadours and John Moreland.

How could it have gone so wrong? That was the question many were asking about "Serena." From any perspective, it looked like a no-brainer success, with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper taking the lead roles in a Depression-era drama based on the best-selling book by Ron Rash. However, it seems from the moment cameras rolled in 2012, something was off. The buzz on the picture was not good; there were rumblings of behind-the-scenes turmoil; and two years later, the movie quietly premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, and the reviews were not kind. Director Susanne Bier ("After The Wedding," "In A Better World") survived the production, and is at the helm of highly anticipated upcoming series "The Night Manager" starring Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie. But when asked about "Serena" by Variety, the filmmaker was candid about what led to the film's failure. Read More: BFI London Film Festival Review: Susanne Bier's.

Serena
Written for the screen by Christopher Kyle
Directed by Susanne Bier
USA/France/Czech Republic, 2014
Based on a bestselling novel by Ron Rash, Serena, as brought to the screen by director Susanne Bier and screenwriter Christopher Kyle, feels like a husk of an adaptation even to one completely unfamiliar with the source material. It’s the sort of film that, at least in the form prepped for theatrical release, makes one inclined to believe its makers have completely lost the ability to tell a story. And it’s not like that ever seems like a deliberate stylistic choice, with Bier actually focusing on some thematic flourish off on the sidelines. Serena is always focused on its plot. Its perpetually rushed, choppily told, borderline confusing plot.

Back in 2012, after Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence co-starred in David O. Russell's Oscar-winning "Silver Linings Playbook" and before its follow-up "American Hustle," the duo shot period drama "Serena," which was once going to star Angelina Jolie with director Darren Aronofsky. Lawrence recommended Cooper and talked him into joining her on the project. Oscar-winning Danish auteur Susanne Bier ("A Better World") took the helm for producers Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner's 2929 Productions, and has been delayed trying to finish it. Based on Ron Rash's 2008 novel, the film is set in 1929 North Carolina and follows George and Serena Pemberton, ambitious newlyweds with their hearts set on a timber empire. They become obsessed with success, and their lives take a Shakespearean turn when Serena finds that she can't get pregnant and tries to harm her husband's illegitimate son. Why the delays? "Once it finished shooting we've...

This is a reprint of our review from the 2014 BFI London Film Festival. Certain films pass into legend as famous disasters almost as soon as they hit theaters, sometimes even beforehand. "Cleopatra." "Heaven's Gate." "Leonard Part 6." "Waterworld." In some of those cases, this lousy reputation was earned, and in others it wasn't. The latest film to potentially join this hall of infamy appears to be "Serena." An adaptation of Ron Rash's acclaimed novel (Darren Aronofsky and Angelina Jolie were once linked to the project), the film is directed by Oscar-winner Susanne Bier and reteams Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, stars of award-winning successes "Silver-Linings Playbook" and "American Hustle." On paper, it looked like the stuff of festival galas and award prestige: a lavish costume drama with two of the hottest stars in the world and a director with a proven track record. The film...

Place Beyond the Pines: Bier’s Ungainly Period Piece Revels in Unintentional Gaffs
Danish director Susanna Bier’s second English language film, Serena, has gained a bit of notoriety after an unexpected delayed theatrical release in the Us. A melodramatically inclined period piece based on a novel by Ron Rash (author of The World Made Straight, of which an adaptation was released earlier this year), the lush production design and starry cast creates a misleading veneer, which slowly gives way to a rather kooky portrait of its eponymous lead character. Presented with soberingly grim determination, the film lapses into unintentionally laughable territory, though not to a degree worthy of camp aesthetic or cult following.

Beware the Serena who is too serene. The title character in novelist Ron Rash's backwoods gothic is a decisive, collected queen bee who rules through retribution and murder. It's a great role for the Jennifer Lawrence of Winter's Bone, whose fierce intelligence, quiet strength, and deep understanding of rural life would make her a formidable lumber baroness. But that's not the Serena of Susanne Bier's adaptation — and not the Lawrence who embodies her. In Rash's novel, Serena arrives at a North Carolina train station on the way to her husband's logging camp in an oxford shirt, leather jodhpurs, and boots. Bier introduces Serena to her new home deep in the Smoky Mountains wearing a silk dress, fur-topped cloth coat, and T-strap heels. Lawrence maintains her...

You probably aren’t aware of this, but a third Bradley Cooper/Jennifer Lawrence collaboration is opening in theaters this weekend. In fact, it has been available On Demand for weeks already. Yes, a film that stars arguably the two biggest stars in Hollywood had a VOD start before the impending limited release on Friday. What movie is this, you ask? Well, it’s Serena, a once incredibly high profile adaptation that had the likes of Darren Aronfosky and Angelina Jolie circling it. Initially slated to come out even before American Hustle, hoping to capitalize on the Cooper/Lawrence success in Silver Linings Playbook, this seemed like a strong Academy Awards player. So…what happened? For those of you not in the know about Serena, here’s a brief overview. It’s adapted from the novel of the same name by Ron Rash, directed by Oscar winning foreign filmmaker Susanne Bier,...

It's not often when a movie featuring two high wattage stars takes years to get released, first getting scuttled to VOD followed by a limited run in theaters, but such is the fate of Susanne Bier's "Serena." Even with the presence of Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, the film took its time in making its way to theaters, and unfortunately, it's because it's not very good. Nevertheless, given two actors of such high calibre, many remain curious, and two new clips from the film have arrived. Based on the novel by Ron Rash, the Depression-era story follows George and Serena, a couple who forge a mighty timber empire together. But the good times soon give way to bad when Serena can't conceive an heir. However, these two clips see the couple in happier times, with George seeing the fetching Serena riding a horse and later with the pair hitting...

Title: The World Made Straight Director: David Burris Starring: Noah Wyle, Jeremy Irvine, Minka Kelly, Haley Joel Osment and Adelaide Clemens The tantalizing and superficial emotional and physical landscapes that are initially introduced in any story makes audiences immediately feel as though they truly know all of the emotions, motivations and ideas of all the characters involved. But ‘The World Made Straight,’ the new drama that marks the feature film directorial debut of ‘Survivor’ producer David Burris, and is adapted from Ron Rash’s 2006 novel of the same name, is the perfect example of how initial appearances aren’t always an adequate representation of how people and situations truly are overall. Civil War on Drugs: Burris Turns Southern Gothic into Southern Comfort
Though its title sounds something you’d expect to grace a Christian propaganda film starring Kirk Cameron, the directorial debut by producer David Burris, The World Made Straight, gets drunk on its own solemn resonance and turns its intriguing elements of tragic fate and warps them into eye crossed foolishness. Painstakingly earnest Jeremy Irvine, struggling still to make good on the boost afforded his visibility after 2011’s War Horse, headlines a curious cast assembled atop an organism featuring a number of exciting elements. But this is rather complicated material and is based on Ron Rash’s 2006 novel. A higher degree of finesse could have teased out the tale’s noir roots, as clearly it’s inspired by any number of Elizabethan or Greek tragedy sources, whereby bloodlines are irrevocably cursed by misdeeds of the forefathers.

Do people in the Himalayas and Andes "live in the passive voice," as those in Appalachia do? That loaded question comes early in The World Made Straight, an adaptation of the Ron Rash novel directed by David Burris. That's an intriguing question about life and fate, albeit one this film — about a chance discovery setting off an old vendetta — doesn't fully see through. Burris envisions the region as one of carefully placed bear traps and Civil War ghosts; suffice to say that the wayward Travis (Jeremy Irvine) doesn't know what he's in for when he goes rifling through his family history. Relics of that conflict are literally embedded in the soil, so common that a cheap metal detector used as collateral in a low-level drug deal can sniff them out. As t...

No American actor in recent memory has seen a career ascend as high and as quickly as Jennifer Lawrence. Five years ago, almost nobody knew her name. Today, she headlines the biggest franchise in Hollywood, is an essential part of another major film series and has become the youngest female actor to earn three Oscar nominations for acting. However, not all of her career choices can be winners, as Lawrence has given her first forgettable performance since becoming America’s movie sweetheart, in a film that is just as unremarkable: Suzanne Bier’s long-delayed period romance Serena.

The first trailer for “The World Made Straight” has landed, and it has some surprises for anyone who hasn’t been tracking the film. We also think it promises great soundtrack elements for those of you in love with bluegrass music. (Folk singer-songwriter Steve Earle, who most recently contributed music to an episode of “True Detective,” appears on-screen in the film and sings the opening song in the trailer.) Set in Appalachia and based on the novel by Ron Rash, the film follows a troubled young man trying to escape his hometown’s long history of violence, which dates back to a Civil War massacre. The surprises we’re talking about come mainly in the form of casting. That thin, bearded guy with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and a pistol in his hand—can you place the face? Yes, you guessed correctly, and don’t worry, it took us a moment,...

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper are reuniting for the long-delayed period piece "Serena" from director Susanne Bier ("After the Wedding," "Things We Lost in the Fire"). The film's newest trailer features the two stars all dolled up in sumptuous period duds for some romance, mystery and tragedy amid some breathtaking scenery captured by ace D.P. Morten Søborg (who's worked with Bier before, as well as Nicholas Winding Refn). Based on Ron Rash's novel, "Serena" takes place in Depression-racked North Carolina, where George Pemberton (Cooper) struggles to maintain his burgeoning timber empire, while his strong-willed young wife, Serena (Lawrence), may be taking their domestic -- and professional --partnership too far. Watch the new trailer here: Bier has reportedly been tinkering with the film since it wrapped principal photography in early 2012, and it had a tough time landing a distributor despite its A-list stars (it also stars Rhys Ifans, Sean Harris,...

As Jennifer Lawrence fans gear up to see her in mighty warrior mode for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, how many of them are likely to fork out for Depression-era drama Serena? Well, those J-Law lovers across the pond in the UK failed to show their support for the actress’s gloomier period piece – it opened in 19th place this past weekend. The film’s U.S. distributor, Magnolia Pictures, have not yet given up hope though on the film acquiring an audience in America, as they’ve now dropped a new trailer to entice filmgoers.

With the honeymoon phase twinkle still in their eyes, the pair launch a successful timber business and everything’s rosy. However, when they discover she is unable to bear children, George strays outside of the marriage and everything falls apart.

Earlier today, you saw Jennifer Lawrence in blockbuster mode with the final trailer for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1." Now you can see the actress try on her period melodrama pants with "Serena," opposite Bradley Cooper, and get more of a sense if the mostly negative reviews are warranted. Based on the novel by Ron Rash, the film is a Depression-era tale about George and Serena, a couple who forge a mighty timber empire together. Problems arise when Serena can't get pregnant, and George strays outside their marriage. From there, inevitable tragedy looms. It's good stuff on paper, but as our recent review noted, there's good reason why the folks behind Susanne Bier's long delayed movie "might be keen to sweep this one under the rug." "Serena" is now playing in the U.K. (where it opened in 19th place over the weekend —ouch), and comes to the U.

Jennifer Lawrence was in typically playful mood during the premiere of Serena at the 58th BFI London Film Festival on Monday night (October 13).
The Oscar-winning star looked demure in a long Christian Dior tuxedo jacket worn as a dress, pointing towards her character's face on the film's poster as though she were pretending to pick her nose.

Screen queen Jennifer Lawrence made a surprise personal appearance at the world premier of Serena earlier today, imploring the London Film Festival audience to embrace the movie with a good heart. "And if you don't, just don't Tweet about it," grinned America's Sweetheart. Adapted from Ron Rash's shlocky 2008 bestseller, the project was initially earmarked as an Angelina Jolie vehicle directed by Darren Aronofksy. Then it passed to Danish director Susanne Bier, who won the Best Foreign Language

The film was shot back in 2012, but then went quiet. Berlin, Cannes, Venice and...

Director: Susanne Bier; Screenwriter: Christopher Kyle; Starring: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Toby Jones, Rhys Ifans, Sean Harris; Running time: 110 mins; Certificate: 15
After sharing the screen in American Hustle and more substantially in Silver Linings Playbook, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence have a rapport that pays dividends in a sepia-hued adaptation of Ron Rash's novel Serena. Without their combined starriness, this period love story would sink into a slushy bog.
Danish director Susanne Bier is behind the camera and she's certainly earned her right to marshal a big Hollywood production with credits that include the original Brothers (remade with Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire) and her 2002 Dogme film Open Hearts. She usually handles high emotion with a light touch, and does so once again here (for the most part) against the backdrop of the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina.

Adaptations in film and television have become some of the most popular franchises and series today. From the Harry Potter films to the HBO series Game of Thrones to the countless Nicholas Sparks movies that find their way to the cinema, books have become the stepping stones to getting some of the most creative storylines on the screen. Adaptations from stage to film are also wildly popular, with films like 2012′s Les Misèrables and 2013′s August: Osage County receiving critical acclaim in the past couple of years. This years BFI London Film Festival is following the adaptation trend with five stand-out book/play/documentary adaptations to watch out for.

If People magazine had a World’s Sexiest Movie, Serena would be a strong contender for the 2014 title. The Depression-era drama stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, stars so hot right now that to even look at them risks bringing on a case of Raiders’ Nazi eyeball syndrome. Still, here they are in a gallery’s worth of new stills from the film. Don your protective glasses and take a look. Susanne ‘In A Better World’ Bier’s film sees the pair playing married couple the Pembertons – he's a timber baron; she's his alluring wife – for whom all seems well in the world of 1930s timberland. But no! It turns out she’s unable to bear him the heir he craves, and things turn a little Henry VIII fast from there. He may not actually loop off her head but Ron Rash’s source novel certainly taps into the darker spirits at play in Macbeth,...

Two years after wrapping principal photography, we’re on the precipice of Serena landing in theatres – in the UK. Following a lengthy post-production process during which director Susanne Bier completed an additional two movies, the period drama is still a ways off landing in the Us. Does this suggest the editing suite woes are still too dangerous to unleash on the American public? Is the UK cinematic palette somehow more adept at coping with films that some reviewers have called a hot mess?
You’d think that reuniting Silver Linings Playbook stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper would be a shoo-in for the awards schedule. Cobbled together immediately after that flick, production was apparently going swimmingly. Until it wasn’t.
A Depression-era drama based on the novel by Ron Rash, it follows a young couple, Serena (Lawrence) and George Pemberton (Cooper), who run and own a successful timber mill in North Carolina during the 1920s.

Millennium Entertainment is continuing to make moves following its deal to become a stand-alone distribution and catalog company. Today CEO Bill Lee unveiled that the soon-to-be-renamed outfit has closed a senior revolving credit facility and term loan facility worth $40 million.
The facilities helped finance Millennium and Virgo Investment Group’s August buyout of previous owners including Avi Lerner’s Nu Image, and will help Millennium going forward to acquire films for the studio’s upcoming slate. (The credit facilities provides for a $20 million term loan as well as a $20 million revolving line of credit with an additional accordion feature for future opportunities.)
Among those projects in Millennium’s pipeline is Madam Bovary, the Sophie Barthes-directed film that stars Mia Wasikowska, Paul Giamatti, and Ezra Miller. The company scooped up U.S. rights in a seven-figure deal sealed just before the period pic’s Toronto premiere earlier this month. Another...

Susanne Bier's Serena sounds great on paper. Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, adapted from Ron Rash's highly acclaimed novel with Bier at the helm. Perfect, rightc Well, Bier has since had two films premiere either in theaters or at film festivals and Serena will finally premiere at the London Film Festival next month, just ahead of a UK release. However, stateside, the film was still without distribution until now as The Hollywood Reporter brings word Magnolia has picked up the film for a 2015 release... no awards campaign will be waged. That isn't what's most interesting about this news though... THR reports that CAA, which reps the movie, along with Bier, Lawrence and Cooper, held three private screenings featuring three different cuts of the film after which one buyer reportedly said, "The film was so edited, it made no sense." Another called the performances "uneven, particularly Lawrence's descent into madness.

Based on a novel by Ron Rash, Susanne Bier’s Serena stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in their third collaboration (and second as lovers). Set in Depression-era North Carolina, George and Serena Pemberton are newlyweds and business partners intent on building a timber empire. Serena’s no-nonsense approach keeps the men around her in line, but when George’s hidden past comes to light, things take a turn for the dramatic. Surprisingly, Serena doesn’t have a U.S. release date at this time. U.K. moviegoers can see it on November 27 (or at the London Film Festival if they’re anxious for some J-Law). So what’s the deal with making American audiences wait? Our pal Sean O’Connell had that...

Based on the novel by Ron Rash, the period film follows newlyweds George Pemberton and his new bride, Serena, as they maintain a close watch over a burgeoning logging empire in Depression-era North Carolina, ruthlessly ruling the woodlands while fighting off the efforts of environmental activists to turn their land into a national park.
Bier’s latest film, A Second Chance, had its world premiere Tuesday night at the Toronto International Film Festival. Bier won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for In A Better World (2010) and was also nominated for After The Wedding (2006).
Serena is scheduled for a UK release on October 24. Count on a U.S. release date to be announced soon so it doesn’t miss a bid for awards consideration at year’s end.

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence made movie magic in "Silver Linings Playbook" and "American Hustle" -- and now, they're teaming up again in the dark drama, "Serena." While the film was shot back in 2012, right after "Silver Linings" and "The Hunger Games," we're finally getting our first look at the film today. Thought such a long shelf life is usually the first sign of a flop, the trailer above looks pretty impressive. Based on Ron Rash’s 2008 novel, Lawrence and Cooper play a husband and wife who have their own timber empire in Depression-era North Carolina.Their marital bliss turns sour when Lawrence’s character finds out that her husband has an illegitimate child, and she sets out to destroy him in a revenge plot that seems to be inspired by Lady Macbeth. The film will debut at the BFI London Film Festival, before opening in the U.K. There is still no U.

It's no secret that Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper have incredible onscreen chemistry, and from the looks of this trailer, their new film, Serena, will be no different. The Silver Linings Playbook duo depict newlyweds George and Serena Pemperton in the film, which is based on a Ron Rash novel about a couple attempting to create a timber empire in 1930s North Carolina. Lawrence captivates as a woman who doesn't necessarily fit the 1930s female stereotype, as she speaks her mind and swings an ax at a tree. The movie, directed by Susanne Bier, was filmed back in spring 2012 and

Once again, we find ourselves in that strange spot of anticipation. When a film takes two years from the end of principal photography to cinema release, does that indicate trouble? If it has taken so long to ‘tinker’ with it in post-production, is it going to be a mess? All these questions will soon be answered, as Serena has finally got a trailer.

We have been waiting forever for Susanne Bier's Serena, a film that reunites Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, but also one that has been sitting on the shelves for one hell of a long time only to suddenly pop up on the UK release calendar without a domestic release in sight. Now we have a trailer and poster for the movie that will be hitting UK theaters on October 24. Based on Ron Rash's novel of the same name, the film follows newlyweds George (Cooper) and Serena Pemberton (Lawrence) who travel from Boston to the mountains of North Carolina where they begin to build a timber empire in 1929. Serena soon shows herself to be the equal of any man: overseeing crews, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving a man's life in the wilderness. Together, this king and queen rule their dominion, killing or vanquishing all who stand in the way of their ambitions.
