- I've always loved the contrast in Dylan (Bob Dylan) of complex thoughts put in a really simple way. Everyone talks of him as a great poet, but he can also write a great pop song, and combine the two. I'd compare him to William Burroughs (William S. Burroughs) with his grasp of language. They both go off on these mad tangents and then have one sentence where they nail it. Dylan has complete control over a phrase: he'll use it to its full potential. He also changes the whole time. If you listen to "Freewheelin'...", he'll sing songs which are very political, like "Masters of War", then the next moment he'll be singing a real love song.
- It's very hard to emulate or be anything close to Dylan (Bob Dylan). It's like saying: who have The Beatles influenced? He's a conduit of what's going on, he put down how everyone was feeling in a solid way. I'd like to think my lyrics show his influence.
- What Dylan (Bob Dylan) did that was totally original was to be constantly changing, but also forcefully direct, and have so much anger in his music. And not necessarily about politics. It's morality. His songs try to right wrongs, and that's genuine. He inspired a generation. A lot of the reason our society is a little better now is down to that man. As to people revering him too much, it's the kind of thing Dylan would say himself. I don't agree. I understand friends who say they hate his voice, so can't get into his music. But they respect how he changed people's perspectives. I don't think his music's a dead weight on my generation. I put on one of his songs and it makes me feel big. It makes me feel I can change things.
