Chicago – Getting the right chemistry in casting a film is crucial in a drama, and the new film “Just Mercy” anchors lead actors Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx with two vital characters actors. Karan Kendrick portrays Millie McMillian, the wife of Foxx’s character, who is on death row. Tim Blake Nelson is Ralph Myers, a key witness.
“Just Mercy” is the based-on-truth story of Walter McMillian (Foxx), an African American man who is accused of a 1990s murder he did not commit. The irony of this accusation is that it takes place in Monroeville, Alabama. This is the hometown of Harper Lee, who set the scenario in her famous book about racial injustice, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” in a town like Monroeville. Enter Bryan Stevenson (Jordan), a fresh out of law school attorney looking to make a difference. With the help of Eva Ansley (Brie Larson), he takes on Walter’s case,...

It’s almost impossible not to recognize the plot points and dramatic beats being depicted in Just Mercy. At the same time, it’s nearly as difficult to not be affected by them. Such is the case when a familiar tale is told exceedingly well and impeccably acted. Earnest, wearing its heart on its sleeve, and fully believing in the power of its story, this movie is more than just an eventual feel good tale. There’s a low key anger on display too, which is helpful. Though never quite able to break free into greatness, this is still a very good flick and well worth seeing when it opens this week. The film is a true life drama, based on the life of well known civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan), and in particular the case of Walter “Johnny D.” McMillian (Jamie Foxx). When we meet Brian,...

Stars: Taylor Schilling, Kate McKinnon, Bryn Vale, Fabrizio Zacharee Guido, Allison Tolman, Brian Tyree Henry, Matt Walsh, Eric Edelstein, Peter Horton, Jessie Ennis, Karan Kendrick, Juan Gaspard | Written and Directed by Laura Steinel
I was drawn to 2018′s Family initially by the lead-casting of Taylor Schilling, mainly because of how much I liked her throughout the seasons of Orange is the New Black. I also found an appeal in the synopsis, which sounded fresh, interesting and fun. Who doesn’t dig that kind of thing? As for the brief idea here, we follow Kate (Schilling), a Senior V.P who is very focused on her career, but when her estranged brother asks her, last-minute, to babysit her niece Maddie, she reluctantly helps out and see’s her life becomes a chaotic one in the process. Oh, and there’s Juggalo’s too. Yep.

The Hamptons Film Festival will open with Just Mercy, a legal drama that Warner Bros. plans to release commercially this Christmas, and will also screen Disney’s Ford v Ferrari as its Centerpiece selection.
The 27th annual edition of the fest will be held over Columbus Day weekend, October 10-14.
Along with the two tentpole titles, the festival will feature Sundance prize-winner Clemency, along with a conversation with star Alfre Woodard, who plays a prison warden troubled by presiding over inmates’ executions. Marking her well-received performance in director Chinonye Chukwu’s film, the festival will feature Woodard in a conversation reflecting on her career, which has yielded Emmy and Golden Globe wins plus an Oscar nomination.
Four world premieres of documentaries were also announced by fest organizers. They are: Conscience Point, about the Shinnecock Nation’s fight for ancestral rights in Southampton; National Enquirer portrait Scandalous; mass-shooting exploration In Memoriam; and water-crisis examination Flint.

A black woman snaps after years of watching less qualified white men take the promotions she deserves in Broken Ceiling, a workplace drama about a conference call that goes very badly. The writing/directing debut of Adam Davis, the four-person (and one voice) drama is, to understate the situation, uncinematic: It would look bare-bones even on a small theater's stage, where its round robin of abrupt monologues would be more at home. A capable cast makes the most of Davis' sincere but not very deep script; despite the timeliness of the material, though, big-screen prospects are dim.
