Exclusive: Almost a thousand migrant children separated from their families at the U.S. border during the Trump administration have yet to be reunited with their parents, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Many other migrant parents might still be waiting to get their children back were it not for the efforts of Immigrant Families Together, a mom-led organization that sprang up in response to the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance policy.” The story of anguished parents helped by Ift is told in the documentary Split at the Root, directed by Linda Goldstein Knowlton. The Split At The Root team all together at SXSW Photo: Split At The Root
Despite the controversy around many policies introduced under Donald Trump’s regime, the one probably responsible for the most international outrage was the zero tolerance policy on immigration. It was this which led to families being detained in atrocious conditions at the border and, still more notoriously, children being taken from their parents and put up for adoption elsewhere. The stories of what happened to some of those children are horrific, but there are also stories with more positive endings. Some children were reunited with their parents and were able to start new lives. Documentary Split At The Root explains how.

The Juliana Margulies-led “Dietland” has been canceled after one low-rated season, AMC announced on Thursday.
“‘Dietland’ is bold, original and brave,” the network said in a statement. “We are beyond proud of our partnership with Marti Noxon, Joy Nash, Juliana Margulies, Skydance and everyone else involved in bringing Sarai Walker’s story to the screen. Similarly, Aisha Tyler and our friends at Embassy Row delivered a unique companion show that led with fresh voices and important topics. ‘Dietland’ garnered critical acclaim and passionate fans but unfortunately we will not be able to continue with a second season.”
The critically-acclaimed series, from executive producer and showrunner Marti Noxon, starred Joy Nash and Margulies in an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Sarai Walker.

AMC has ordered a 10-episode adaptation of “Dietland,” the 2015 novel about weight loss and beauty, from executive producer Marti Noxon (“UnReal,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”).
The novel, written by Sarai Walker and released in 2015, takes place in the beauty industry and mixes character drama and revenge fantasy to explore society’s obsession with weight loss and beauty. Kirkus Reviews called the book “part ‘Fight Club,’ part feminist manifesto, an offbeat and genre-bending novel that aims high.”
Noxon, who will direct the first several episodes of the series, elaborated more about the show on Saturday at AMC’s portion of the Television Critics Association press tour. Noxon said she was concerned at first that she wouldn’t find a home for “Dietland,” which she noted features a “funny and poignant” story that “you can’t quantify.”
But it’s also dark: The main character is morbidly obese, and finds herself being pulled between two feminist cults.
