This year’s crop of Intl. Emmy nominees across categories feature strong and diverse showings for series and performers alike. Here, Variety breaks down the races.
Drama
Few categories sum up current trends in global TV better than drama series, which also continues to be the biggest prize at the ceremony. Three of the four titles come from big, global-reaching companies, and three of are also crime thrillers, still the stock-in trade of much high-end international drama. On paper, any of the four titles could win, with interrogation room-set “Criminal: U.K.” from “Killing Eve” writer George Kay, pitting cops against suspects played in memorable turns by a stone-faced David Tennant and swanking Hayley Atwell. “The Bronze Garden 2” has Argentina’s Joaquín Furriel take on a new case to honor his dead friend Doberti (Luis Luque). While the world will eventually recover from the Covid-pandemic, the same cannot be said about many of the conflicts in Arabic states, with Syria being perhaps the most problematic and disastrous. After the spark of hope that came with the Arab Spring in the early 2010s, the world stood in (silent) shock as dictators and authoritarian regimes took drastic measures to ensure their rules remained. In Syria, the revolution was eventually met with the regime of president Assad, supported by his Russian allies, bombarding his own people, resulting in an unprecedented humanitarian disaster. With much of the media being censored or downright banned by the regime, the world only got to know about the revolution as well as the eventual siege thanks to people like citizen journalist Waad al-Kateab and her husband Hamza al-Kateab, a doctor who gave many interviews during the siege for Western media outlets.

‘Birds of Prey’ (Photo credit: WB).
After flying high with Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Joker, the Warner Bros DC Comics universe has plummeted to earth with Birds of Prey.
The Suicide Squad spin-off starring Margot Robbie as the ass-kicking Harley Quinn opened in the lower realms for the superhero genre last weekend.
Even so, the top 20 takings generated $13.5 million, up 7 per cent on the previous frame, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
André Rieu fans turned out en masse for his latest film and specialised titles The Lighthouse and For Sama opened strongly.
To give it the complete, mouthful of a title, the Cathy Yan-directed Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn rang up $3.8 million on 528 screens. Pro-rata, that is a bit more respectable than the $33.2 million Us launch, which was well below the pre-release estimates of $50 million-$55 million.

It’s a huge Sunday in the entertainment world. Shortly, the Super Bowl will start, pitting the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers. However, this afternoon also saw the 73rd British Academy Film Awards being held. Better known as BAFTA, this group often can hold some major sway over Oscar voters, so seeing as how this ceremony went down in the midst of Academy Award voting, it’s very much worth paying attention to. Now that the results are known, we can run down what happened and begin to figure out how much impact it will have on the Academy overall. BAFTA gave a small boost to Parasite, having it win Best Original Screenplay. However, Best Film and Best Director went to 1917 and Sam Mendes, respectively. 1917 seems locked in to win Director at Oscar, with the Best Picture situation a pick-em. Sam Mendes’ “1917” came away as the big winner on Sunday at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTA). The World War I drama won in seven of the nine categories in which it was nominated, including Best Film and Best Director.

It’s been said time and again that the Academy’s documentary branch is a consistently unpredictable bunch. But are they?
Given their Oscar nomination track record, it certainly doesn’t seem like it. The group has made their likes and dislikes perfectly clear in recent years. They enjoy recognizing international productions as well as newcomers. In the past two decades alone, 12 directors have taken home the Academy Award for their very first documentary theatrical feature. They include Bryan Fogel (“Icarus”), Ezra Edelman (“O.J.: Made in America”), Louie Psihoyos (“The Cove”) and Malik Bendjelloul (“Searching for Sugarman”). Big box office numbers also don’t impress this nonfiction crowd. Examples include snubbing “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” ($22.8 million) “Three Identical Strangers” ($13.4 million) and this year’s “Apollo 11” ($15.3 million). They also aren’t awed by archival footage. (Again: “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” and “Apollo 11”.) And they especially...

When the 2020 Oscar nominations were announced, critics immediately seized upon the glaring lack of women recognized in the Best Director competition. But on the nonfiction side, it’s a completely different story.
In the Best Documentary Feature category, four of the five nominated films are directed or co-directed by women. In Best Documentary Short, it’s the same story—four of five nominees are directed or co-directed by women.
It’s also a year when Greta Gerwig was overlooked for Best Director in the fiction realm. “Narrative is so badly handling women,” comments Carol Dysinger, who earned an Oscar nomination for her short doc Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl). “But in my community, documentary, we do Ok.”
Among the women documentary filmmakers recognized with an Oscar nomination this year is Syrian-born Waad Al-Kateab, who directed For Sama with Edward Watts.

Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” continued its run of top critics’ honors this season, scooping the Film of the Year and Director of the Year awards at the London Film Critics’ Circle kudos ceremony this evening. The victory puts extra wind in the sails of the South Korean phenomenon as it heads into the final stretch of awards season, with the BAFTAs delivering their verdict on Sunday.
Other multiple winners at the black-tie ceremony, voted on by the UK’s most high-profile critics’ group, were “Marriage Story,” recognized for Noah Baumbach’s screenplay and Laura Dern’s supporting performance, and Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir.” A melancholy memory piece inspired by the director’s film school days, Hogg’s film was named British/Irish Film of the Year, while its 22-year-old leading lady, Honor Swinton Byrne, won Young British/Irish Performer of the Year. ‘For Sama’ Directors Waad Al-Kateab And Edward Watts On Feeling Like “Little Fish” In Big Oscar Pond
When the Oscar nominations were announced earlier this month, two documentaries about Syria made it through: Feras Fayyad’s The Cave, about a courageous woman doctor running a subterranean hospital outside Damascus, and For Sama, directed by Waad Al-Kateab and Edward Watts, the story of Al-Kateab’s effort to raise her baby daughter in Aleppo as the city was systematically destroyed.
“Before the revolution there’s no Syrian film that made it to the [Oscars’] final five,” Al-Kateab notes. “And for the Academy people to [nominate] these two films, it was for us the best thing that could ever happen.”
Watts adds, “When we were making the film, we were told so often that people didn’t care about Syria anymore, that everyone was exhausted by it. And so to see at this level people engaging and supporting two films about Syria, it gives you hope that actually people do care about...

Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.

BAFTA leadership has taken the unusual step of reaching out to the entire membership to express frustration over the lack of diversity in this year’s nominations.
There were no women up for Best Director for the seventh year in a row and there was another all-white set of acting nominees.
In a correspondence seen by Deadline, chief executive Amanda Berry and film committee chair Marc Samuelson write that “the lack of diversity in these categories is frustrating and deeply disappointing for an organisation that sets itself the firm ambition of a more inclusive industry”.
The move comes after Deadline exclusively revealed yesterday a call from Brit group Directors UK for BAFTA to overhaul its voting system. BAFTA responded by affirming to us that it would conduct a “review of the entire voting process across all categories” this year.
It should be noted that reviews are not unusual for BAFTA.

Despite this morning’s BAFTA noms diversity furor, there are some silver linings concerning inclusion.
Syrian war documentary For Sama, from Syrian director Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts, has become BAFTA’s most-nominated feature documentary, the organization has said. The film is nominated in four categories: Outstanding British Film; Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director Or Producer; Best Film Not In The English Language; and Best Documentary.
Female director Al-Kateab scored this year’s joint-most individual nominations (alongside Bong Joon Ho) with four separate nods.
An intimate journey into the female experience of war, the film is a love letter from a young mother to her daughter. It charts Al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rages around her.

In this foreshortened, speedy awards schedule, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominations for the Ee British Academy Film Awards arrived mere hours, rather than a week, before Oscar voters hand in their nominations ballots. BAFTA’s February 2 Awards show comes two days before Academy ballots are due on February 4. BAFTA has an overlap of a few hundred Academy voters living mostly in London, New York and Los Angeles.
6700 BAFTA members voted for the nominations covering 39 feature films. One movie that one would expect would do well with the BAFTAs, British theater-maven and filmmaker Sam Mendes’ one-shot World War I epic “1917,” landed nine nominations, but no acting nods. The war movie took home two Golden Globes on Sunday, for Motion Picture Drama and Director. Historically, about two-thirds of BAFTA contenders also reap Oscar bids. Last year, the BAFTAs chose “Roma” over eventual Oscar Best Picture “Green Book.

“Joker,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “The Irishman” have come out on top in the nominations for the 2020 British Academy of Film and Television’s Film Awards.
“Joker” had 11 noms, and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman” scored 10 noms apiece. Off the back of its Globes success, “1917” landed nine.
BAFTA was quickly criticized on social channels for an overwhelmingly white set of nominees. Only white actors were nominated in the supporting and main categories. “Film is an incredible medium to tell the stories of our society and our world, but we need people of all backgrounds to be working in the industry to enable us to do that,” BAFTA chief Amanda Berry told the BBC. “If you look at the number of female noms this year it’s well over a third, well up from what it was, say, two years ago, but it’s still not good enough.

Following our top 50 films of 2019, we’re sharing personal top 10 lists from our contributors. Check out the latest below and see our complete year-end coverage here.
I’m not sure if it says more about the quality of international productions above domestic titles in 2019 or my own evolving tastes, but I’ve never had this many foreign language films in a Top Ten before. And it’s not just European countries like France and Germany. The Middle East, Asia, and Scandinavia are represented too. The consistent output of stellar dramatic work that resonated beyond borders was a truly stunning thing to behold and I hope it continues into the next decade.
Another common through-line here is the success of quiet, contemplative dramas that look to mine below the surface to find political, social, and cultural truth. So many titles on this list are dialogue-heavy confrontations in search of identity, strength,...
