Cable news was again a study in contrasts on Thursday: Fox News carried a big portion of Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s testimony before a House committee, while CNN and MSNBC did not.
Kennedy’s candidacy — which seems to be embraced much more by the right than the left — also was highlighted with an interview later in the day on Fox News’ The Story with Martha MacCallum, while the political scion next week will sit for a town hall with Sean Hannity.
As a star witness before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, Kennedy’s appearance was contentious from the start. After Republicans and Democrats sparred over his testimony and he gave his opening statement, Fox News anchors then gave him high marks for his debut before the panel.
“He dispensed with his written statement. He gave it passionately from the heart.

While all eyes were on a federal courthouse in Miami this morning, House Republicans voted to prohibit offering life-saving abortion care to pregnant veterans — as well as to ban the pride flag from flying at Veterans Administration facilities.
The vote came in the powerful Appropriations Committee, where 34 Republicans outvoted 27 Democrats in a party line vote.
Back in September, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced it would provide abortions to veterans and V.A. beneficiaries (the family members of veterans, usually) if their life or health were jeopardized — services that would...

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) claims he has testimony from “dozens” of whistleblowers who’ve provided him with proof that the FBI is unfairly persecuting conservatives. This doesn’t actually seem to be the case.
The first three of these witnesses whose testimony Jordan received were not really “whistleblowers,” but disaffected former FBI employees receiving financial backing from former President Trump’s ally and advisor Kash Patel. None of them have been given whistleblower protection status by the Department of Justice.

Police departments in major cities have issued alerts regarding a potential national “Day of Hate” against Jewish people and institutions. Neo-Nazi and white nationalist groups on social media are reportedly calling upon followers to engage in vandalism and spread antisemitic propaganda on Saturday.

Earlier this month, Kevin McCarthy announced the creation of a new “Weaponization of the Federal Government” select committee aimed at investigating overreach by the Justice Department. One case that House Republicans are likely to ignore is Special Counsel John Durham’s probe into the Russia investigation, despite The New York Times reporting on Thursday that Durham and former Attorney General Bill Barr, who appointed him, may have abused their investigative powers in a litany of ways, including by using sketchy Russian intelligence to gain access to the emails of an...

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) on Thursday joined a long list of high-profile figures in Washington, D.C., who have contracted Covid-19 in the past few days.
“After testing negative this week, Speaker Pelosi received a positive test result for Covid-19 and is currently asymptomatic,” Drew Hammill, Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff, wrote on Twitter. “The Speaker is fully vaccinated and boosted, and is thankful for the robust protection the vaccine has provided.”
Collins’ office announced later on Thursday that she, too, had tested positive.

Updated with reaction: In a surprise move that few people saw coming during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address, conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh was awarded the United States’ highest civilian honor — the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
“Almost every American family knows the pain when a loved one is diagnosed with a serious illness,” Trump began. “Here tonight is a special man, beloved by millions of Americans, who just received a Stage 4 advanced cancer diagnosis. This is not good news, but what is good news is that he is the greatest fighter and winner that you will ever meet. Rush Limbaugh, thank you for your decades of tireless devotion to our country.”
The king of conservative talk, who a day earlier announced he has advanced lung cancer, rose and acknowledged the cheers. Then Potus highlighted Limbaugh’s charity work as he made the unprecedented announcement in the House chambers:

Washington — There is one person who can almost singlehandedly put to rest one of the more cruel conspiracy theories to infect American politics this century. That person is Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks who currently sits in Britain’s Belmarsh prison. That theory claims Seth Rich, a 27-year-old Democratic Party staffer murdered in what police call a street robbery gone wrong, leaked tens of thousands of private emails to WikiLeaks in 2016, upending the U.S. presidential race and leading to the resignation of senior party officials.

Washington — Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s redacted final report drove a dagger through the heart of one of the most notorious conspiracy theories of the Trump era: that a murdered DNC staffer named Seth Rich — not Russia — stole tens of thousands of Democratic Party emails and gave them to WikiLeaks during the 2016 presidential race.
But don’t hold your breath for an apology, correction or retraction from high-profile promoters of the now-disproven theories like Sean Hannity or WikiLeaks. In the aftermath of Mueller’s report, they’ve gone silent on the subject of Seth Rich.

The man accused of sending pipe bombs to CNN and prominent Democrats has been indicted in Manhattan federal court on 30 counts connected to the mailing of 16 explosive devices to 13 targets.
Cesar Sayoc, 56, of South Florida was arrested on Oct. 26, five days after the first discovery of the improvised explosive devices were sent to targets including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, actor Robert De Niro and former President Barack Obama. A device sent to CNN’s New York headquarters and addressed to former CIA director John Brennan forced the evacuation of the Time Warner Center last month.
The indictment was handed down on Friday.
“Cesar Sayoc allegedly targeted former high-ranking officials such as President Barack Obama, President Bill Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and others, as well as CNN, by sending explosive packages to them through the U.S. Postal Service,” said Geoffrey Berman, U.

A bomb was discovered outside the Manhattan offices of Robert De Niro this morning, bringing the total number of extremist attacks to nine.
In what marks a continuing and extremely coordinated terrorist operation, actor and celebrated filmmaker Robert De Niro is the latest to be targeted with a pipe bomb. Earlier this morning at 5 am, a suspicious package addressed to De Niro was found outside the offices of his production company in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood. The same building that is also the hub of the Tribeca Film Festival. The bomb had apparently been left outside the building and had been spotted by a security employee who noticed similarities between the package and photographs of other bombs that were discovered yesterday.

Law enforcement and government officials have not yet officially deemed the mailings as terrorist acts. Oliver Stone has interviewed Russian president Vladimir Putin more than a dozen times over the past two years. Now, Stone and his documentary producer Fernando Sulichin have turned those chats into “The Putin Interviews,” a four-hour documentary series airing over four nights this June on Showtime.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker and legendary muckraker suddenly unveiled the release of a previously unannounced project: Michael Moore in TrumpLand, a new film culled from two one-man shows the director performed earlier this month in the predominantly Republican town of Wilmington, Ohio. Shot, edited and released in less than two weeks,...

I’ve been back from my Oregon vacation for a couple of weeks now, and though the getaway was a good and necessary one, I’m still in the process of mentally unpacking from a week and a half of relaxing and thinking mostly only about things I wanted to think about. (I also discovered a blackberry cider brewed in the region, the source of a specific sort of relaxation that I’m still finding myself pining for.) It hasn’t helped that our time off and immediate time back coincided with the bombast and general insanity of the Republic National Convention, followed immediately by the disarray and sense of restored hope that bookended the Democrats’ week-long party. The extremity of emotions engendered by those two events, coupled with a profoundly unsettling worry over the base level of our current political discourse and where it may lead this country, hasn...

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange appeared via satellite on Real Time With Bill Maher Friday to discuss the controversial leak of Democratic National Convention emails, Edward Snowden and whether his organization would try to access Donald Trump's tax returns. "We're working on it," Assange told Maher.
Assange first defended the criticisms against the DNC leaks, which was reportedly perpetrated by Russian hackers in an attempt to discredit and splinter the Democratic Party to better Donald Trump's chances of being elected president. Assange argued that the leak was necessary as...

HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver wrapped up two weeks of political conventions with a relentless, hilarious and absolutely (if fittingly) profane knockout punches Sunday. Kicking things off with a can’t-lose local news clip of a skybound jet-packer plunging directly into the ocean — a visual analogy to Day 1 of the Democratic convention, he suggested — Oliver moved on to Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s boo-plagued Florida appearance (“The only way this could be any…...

Bernie Sanders is returning to his status as an independent after losing the Democratic nomination for president to Hillary Clinton. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Vermont senator announced he will be leaving the Democratic Party when he returns to work in the U.S. Senate this week. "I was elected as an independent; I’ll stay two years more as an independent," Sanders, 74, said at the Bloomberg Politics breakfast on Tuesday. As an elected official in Congress, Sanders caucused with the Democrats, but considers himself an independent due to his far-left-leaning views. When asked if Sanders considers himself...

The Democratic National Convention got off to a bit of a rocky start on Monday in Philadelphia. But campaign strategist Mark McKinnon, one of the stars of Showtime’s political series “The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth,” predicts that the rest of the week will go smoother.
The week began with a leak of embarrassing Democratic National Committee emails that led to the resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Armed with the suggestion that the organization derided the Bernie Sanders campaign, supporters of the candidate expressed their displeasure with chants and boos.

Former Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders spoke in support of Hillary Clinton during the first night of the Democratic National Convention Monday, thanking his supporters while making the case against Republican candidate Donald Trump. "While Donald Trump is busy insulting one group after another, Hillary Clinton understands that our diversity is one of our greatest traits," said Sanders, just hours after some of his supporters booed him for backing the candidate. First Lady Michelle Obama delivered an unusually personal speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday, expressing her enthusiastic support for former First Lady Hillary Clinton while deriding Republican candidate Donald Trump without ever uttering his name. "Don't let anyone ever tell you that this country isn't great," she said in a pointed reference to Trump's campaign slogan. "This, right now, is the greatest country on earth." Obama also got personal during the speech, speaking candidly about daughters Malia and Sasha, and how she and the president have coached them to remain above the fray while facing criticism. "We don't stoop to their level.

Transsexuals don’t have to worry about the bathroom situation at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, as the Wells Fargo Center is equipped with an all-gender restroom. The DNC has transformed a standard women’s bathroom into the all-gender variety with a single sign, but the sign illustrates one of the key differences between the Democratic Party and the Gop. Last week, openly gay billionaire Peter Thiel called the on-going controversy over which bathroom transsexuals should use a “distraction” when speaking at the Republican National Convention. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Monday told NBC’s Richard Engel that there was “no proof whatsoever” that Russian intelligence was involved in a recent hack of over 19,000 emails from the Democratic National Committee. The emails, which were released by WikiLeaks last Friday, revealed the committee’s bias toward presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over rival Bernie Sanders and led to the resignation of DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Sunday. Prior to his interview with Assange, Engel had spoken to several leading U.S. cyber security experts who said that Russian intelligence was responsible for the email hack. But when asked by Engel.

The Democratic National Committee is offering its "deep and sincere apology" to Bernie Sanders, his supporters and the entire party for what it calls "the inexcusable remarks made over email." Monday's statement from incoming interim party leader Donna Brazile and six other officials says the comments in the emails "do not reflect the values of the DNC or our steadfast commitment to neutrality during the nominating process." The statement says the party won't tolerate disrespectful language. The statement wasn't signed by the outgoing DNC head, Debbie Wasserman Schultz. She announced on Sunday that she'd step down from that

Hundreds of Bernie Sanders supporters and other protesters took to the streets of Philadelphia on the first day of the Democratic convention on Monday, filling the air with chants of "Nominate Sanders or lose in November!" and "We are the 99 percent!" Pro-Sanders demonstrators aired their frustrations over issues ranging from climate change to free trade to economic justice - but first and foremost, over the "rigged" electoral process that they believe robbed the Vermont senator of his rightful nomination as the Democratic presidential nominee. "I am angry, I'm angry at the Democratic establishment," Corey Collier, an organizer for the activist umbrella organization Philly.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz is going to go quietly. The Florida congresswoman and Democratic National Committee chairwoman will not speak at the party’s convention as previously planned, NBC News reports. She had been expected to talk in her role as chairwoman — but that was before a leak of emails over the weekend revealed the committee’s efforts to boost Hillary Clinton’s campaign over Bernie Sanders’ during the Democratic primary. That fueled Sanders supporters’ contention that the primaries were rigged against them, and prompted the congresswoman’s sudden decision to resign as DNC chairwoman, saying she didn’t want to distract from Clinton’s campaign.
