Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are two of the most prolific veteran actors currently working in Hollywood. The legends have won Oscars and have featured in multiple acclaimed films. They have also worked with legendary directors such as Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola, and more.
De Niro and Pacino have worked together on four films to date, with the last being The Irishman. Though they first featured in the film The Godfather – Part II, they never shared the screen as their roles were set in different periods. The first time they ever shared a screen was in Michael Mann’s cult classic film Heat.

After years of rumblings, it appears “Heat 2” is actually happening. And if you’ve read the novel by co-authored by filmmaker Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner, then you’re probably aware of the plot of the upcoming film. Nearly nine years since Blackhat with one hour-long TV pilot and big novel in-between doesn’t mean Michael Mann’s spent the much-better part of a decade lying dormant. The man(n) develops, develops, and develops, which is plenty effort for a noted perfectionist whose projects of late haven’t been so financially viable. Fingers crossed Ferrari––a solid, expressive bit of work––does business: he’s holding on to some long-stewing projects and hinting at ones we haven’t even heard word of yet.
In a recent interview with Uproxx, Mann reaffirms interest in a Vietnam-set project––likely his semi-recent attempts to adapt Mark Bowden’s Hue 1968, about the war’s turning-point Tet Offensive, though the outlet (I’m guessing incorrectly) refer to it as the “Battle of Wai.” In 2017 it was sketched as a 10-part FX series on which Mann would serve as a multi-episode director, but no...

Michael Mann returns after a hiatus with his new film, Ferrari. The prolific director has been on the festival circuit promoting his biopic drama, and talks have been floating around for a while of Mann possibly revisiting his famous 90s heist drama, Heat. Michael Mann’s iconic film notably brought together the acting powers of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in a head-to-head cops and robbers tale. Mann released a sequel to Heat in book form last year, which he penned with co-author Meg Gardiner, and since the novel was released, rumors instantly sprang of Mann possibly doing a film version with his Ferrari leading man, Adam Driver.
Deadline is now reporting that while speaking at their Contenders London event, Mann has confirmed that his next project will, in fact, be Heat 2. He stated, “Yes. Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari.

Since his debut film "Thief" hit theaters in 1981, Michael Mann has enjoyed a reputation as one of the best working directors we have in America. Across masterfully mounted films like "Heat," "Collateral," and "Manhunter," he's also earned a somewhat unusual place in the filmmaking pantheon. He's become somewhat of a household name, his films generally do good business at the box office, and he tends to work in genre -- from the noir to the thriller to the procedural. And yet his films also compete at prestigious international film festivals, they've been given Criterion releases, and he's often lumped in with "arthouse" directors like Paul Thomas Anderson and Wes Anderson, rather than action helmers like Michael Bay or Tony Scott.
All this is to say that Mann's career is a bit of a paradox, but it's a wonderful one, and new Michael Mann movies should always be regarded as appointment viewing.

Michael Mann has given a measured, if not encouraging, update on Heat 2, the film adaptation of his 2022 best-selling novel that continues the story from 1995 crime-thriller classic.
In a conversation with Variety ranging from his latest film Ferrari to his remaining working years, Mann shared, “The thing is, I don’t think about mortality. I’m busy. What good would it do me? If I absolutely had to make Heat 2, I wouldn’t have got lost in this beautiful story of [Enzo] Ferrari. And I took two years to write a novel… Fortunately, it became a New York Times No. 1 bestseller. The things I’m into are things that fascinate me and keep me moving forward.”
“Don’t misunderstand, I want to make it,” he added “But if I don’t, I won’t be incomplete.” Elsewhere in the article, it’s suggested that filming Heat 2, “a longtime dream,...

Over eight years after the commercial failure of “Blackhat,” director Michael Mann is putting the blame where he feels it belongs: Michael Mann.
While promoting the upcoming Adam Driver vehicle “Ferrari” in an interview with Variety, the filmmaker briefly fell on his sword concerning the $70 million R-rated actioner. In January of 2015, it earned mixed-to-negative reviews and just $20 million at the global box office.
“It’s my responsibility,” Mann told the publication. “The script was not ready to shoot.” Like many of Mann’s pictures, “Blackhat” has gained a cult audience since its theatrical release, as well as a restructured director’s cut. While Mann blames himself, it also ran into the newfangled notion of audiences not wanting to see a big new movie star outside of his marquee character role.
Moviegoers didn’t care about Chris Hemsworth — talent and charisma notwithstanding — when he wasn’t playing Thor in the MCU.

Last July, Michael Mann revealed to Empire that the Heat sequel — published in novel form the following August – was always intended to be a movie. Michael Mann has a great script, and Warner Bros. has its head all the way up it.
Deadline has reported that a deal is close for a follow-up to Mann’s 1995 sleek L.A. cops-and-robbers epic, “Heat.” The project is based on the novel “Heat 2” that he and Meg Gardiner published last summer. Moreover, it looks like Adam Driver is in talks to play the criminal mastermind Neil McCauley, who was played by Robert De Niro nearly 30 years ago. The “Marriage Story” and “Star Wars” actor is, indeed, about a decade younger than De Niro was at the time, but “Heat 2,” following the path of the book, is both a prequel and a sequel. The novel was a number one New York Times bestseller.

We all knew what the main intention was from filmmaker Michael Mann when he and co-author Meg Gardiner published the “Heat 2” novel last August (You can read The Playlist’s review here). It was obvious they figured out how to make a follow-up film to one of the most beloved crime thrillers of all-time and wanted to test the waters first. Almost 30 years after the original, Heat 2 is in the works from writer-director Michael Mann, with Adam Driver in talks to star as Neil McCauley.
As Deadline reports, Warner Bros. — which distributed the original Heat — is in negotiations to develop Heat 2 based on the novel of the same name Mann published last year (order here). The book, co-authored by Meg Gardiner, is both a prequel and sequel of sorts to the original story, offering storylines involving Heat characters that occur before and after the events of the original film. Driver will play a young McCauley (first portrayed by Robert De Niro), meaning his casting relates to the prequel aspect of the story.
No other actors have been officially linked to Heat 2, but its dual storylines open the door to several more names. While De Niro originally portrayed the career criminal McCauley, Al Pacino played Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, the LAPD cop who...

Mann, who produced, directed, and wrote the original film from 1995 starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Val Kilmer, is the driving force behind the project and is negotiating the rights for the film adaptation. He would be both writing the screenplay and directing the “Heat” sequel should a deal close at a studio. The film would closely follow Mann’s novel “Heat 2” that was a #1 New York Times Bestseller last year, and Mann has long hinted that a sequel to the film has been one of his passion projects.

For the Somewhat Inevitable But Still Crazy files, Deadline have learned Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner’s Heat 2 will fulfill its cinematic ambitions: Warner Bros. are courting Mann to adapt the sprawling novel as a sequel to his 1995 masterpiece. And per recent rumors it could mark a Ferrari reunion: Mann and Adam Driver have discussed him taking the Neil McCauley role (made famous by Robert De Niro) for its prequel sections, which in the novel concerned his days running operations in Chicago, staging a major heist in Mexico, and suffering personal tragedy. (It’s all very cosmic and Godfather II-like.)
That is the extent of solid news, though rumors pegging Driver have also suggested a few more key players: a returning Pacino for its sequel stretch, Austin Butler filling the Val Kilmer role therein, and Ana de Armas for an undisclosed part (though the book leaves room to guess). Crazy...

With the runaway book success of "Heat 2," the literary prequel and sequel written by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner, the L.A. crime classic "Heat" is even hotter than it was back in the mid-'90s. Over time, Mann's cat-and-mouse modern noir epic has grown in esteem to become known as one of the greatest American heist films ever made. "Heat" is driven by the powerhouse performances by Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, two New York City theatre actors that, interestingly, had to make a movie set in Los Angeles in order to finally work together. Although they were both featured in "The Godfather Part II," they had never appeared on screen together until the moment they meet in a crowded coffee shop for a meeting of the minds towards the end of "Heat." In what must have been a difficult decision for Michael Mann, he decided not to...

This month saw the release of “Heat 2,” the novelization sequel to Michael Mann‘s acclaimed 1995 heist flick “Heat” that the filmmaker co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. The book wasn’t just an exercise for the director as Mann is planning to turn it into one big feature film, essentially giving us a sequel/prequel given how the story jumps between events before and after the original movie.

Michael Mann is having quite a week. In addition to beginning production on his star-studded film “Ferrari” this week in Italy, the director’s first novel, “Heat 2,” a sequel to his epic 1995 crime epic, is topping bestseller lists.
Written alongside veteran thriller writer Meg Gardiner, the book reprises the complex characters featured in the original film, namely the professional thief Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino). Although the film ends with Hanna’s murder of McCauley at the end of his years-long investigation, the pair had created an inexplicable bond through their catch-and-kill dynamic that’s further explored in the book’s prequel scenes. One of the most revelatory plot points is the revelation that Hanna and McCauley unknowingly crossed paths in a previous major heist before they met each other.

Yesterday was a good one for filmmaker Michael Mann. He began production in Italy on Ferrari, and learned that his first novel landed atop The New York Times Bestseller hardcover list. Heat 2 fleshes out the events before and after Mann’s 1995 crime classic Heat, and lands atop the Nyt list in its first week in publication. Mann wrote his novel debut with co-writer Meg Gardiner in a book published through Mann’s William Morrow imprint. Heat 2 is the first book in a three book multi-million dollar deal between Michael Mann books and the Harper Collins division, In a Deadline feature on the book last week, Mann said that he plans to lean into continuing the crime story, which in the present focuses on the criminal exploits of Chris Shiherlis, played by Val Kilmer in the original film, and Detective Vincent Hanna, played by Al Pacino in the film. Michael Mann's style is easy to see on screen. It's there in the Tangerine Dream soundtrack to "Thief," the moody color palette of "Manhunter," and, of course, the self-assured mastery of 1995's "Heat." It's the last film that has just landed a sequel, not in the form of a film, but a novel continuation titled "Heat 2." /Film's Jack Giroux spoke with Mann's co-author Meg Gardiner about translating Mann's style into a less visual format.
"What we were trying to do, and I knew that we had to do, was to put on the page the same feeling you get from watching a Michael Mann film," she explained. That's no small feat: "Heat" features two phenomenal performances from its stars, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. "Heat 2" is a dream come true for fans of the original film, and Michael Mann fans in general. It's the filmmaker at his most unfiltered, free of budgetary restraints. Mann and co-author Meg Gardiner crafted a novel that, like the filmmaker's finest work, ticks like clockwork as it often ventures outside of Los Angeles and explores familiar and new characters.
"Heat 2" marks Gardiner's 16th book to date. She's the writer behind the Evan Delaney and "Unsub" series. She's explored crime worlds before on the page, but the experience of "Heat 2" was a whole different level for the author. "I had never done so much research in my life," she said. "Michael is legendarily dedicated to deep research into a topic or subject or culture, and the legend is accurate. We did a lot of thorough and surprising research for the book." Recently, Gardiner told us a bit about that research,...

Director Michael Mann delivered one of the greatest crime films ever in 1995 with "Heat," the filmmaker's heist epic that centers on detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and expert thief Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro). The movie's reputation has only grown in the years since its original release and, to that end, Mann recently released a sequel in the form of a novel, "Heat 2," which he co-wrote alongside Meg Gardiner.
In crafting the new story — both a sequel and a prequel to the original — one of the best scenes in the original movie was considered a great deal. Specifically, in a recent conversation with our own Jack Giroux in honor of the release of "Heat 2," Gardiner explained that she thought a great deal about the infamous diner scene between Hanna and McCauley while writing the book.

The novelistic sprawl of Heat 2 proves massive, surely bigger than any film Michael Mann’s made. Running as it does between 1988, 1995, 2000, Los Angeles, Chicago, the US-Mexican border, a free-trade zone in South America, and southeast Asian shores and jungles, it’s closer in scope and approach to The Godfather II than the 1995 classic. Mann and co-writer Meg Gardiner did not waste their 460 pages. It’s room to run—something a theatrical film couldn’t quite permit.
Yet Mann tells Empire that Heat 2 is “totally planned” for big-screen glory—not “a modest movie” or “a very expensive series” but “one large movie.” If I’m skeptical about retaining the book’s appealing spread, which often kept me quite engaged for much longer than the time it takes to watch Heat in total, Mann is more practical. Namely: it’s a bummer to recast Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Val Kilmer,...

The 1995 heist movie “Heat” is arguably one of the acclaimed entries in the cops-and-robbers genre of the last 30 years, if not longer. It’s a masterclass of how to construct a crime thriller with action elements, and director Michael Mann has been itching to revisit that world which led to him to co-write a prequel/sequel novel with Meg Gardiner that will be released in early August.

Michael Mann confirmed his storyline for a “Heat” sequel will not be a “very expensive series” like HBO’s “Tokyo Vice.”
The director penned the upcoming novel “Heat 2” as a prequel origin story for Al Pacino and Robert De Niro’s respective characters, police officer Vincent Hanna and criminal Neil McCauley, showcasing the relationship between Hanna (Pacino) and Chris Shiherlis, played by Val Kilmer in the 1995 thriller.
While Pacino could conceivably be back as Hanna (and already has fan-casted Timothée Chalamet to play the younger version of himself) due to a time jump in the sequel installment, Mann confirmed that De Niro and Kilmer will not be reprising their roles.
“I love those guys, but they’d have to be six years younger than they were in ‘Heat,'” Mann told Empire Magazine. “It’s totally planned to be a movie. Is it a modest movie? No. Is it a very expensive series?...

For a long, long time we’ve heard word Michael Mann was co-writing a sequel / prequel novel to his indelible (and about 25 other adjectives) 1995 crime film Heat. So long we began to think it was yet another item this beloved, nevertheless exacting auteur couldn’t get into motion, despite having launched the label Michael Mann Books for the express purpose of such passion projects.
Yet here we are, more than 18 months since the last real news, with an August 9 release date and trailer for Heat 2, co-written with Meg Gardiner (replacing once-attached Reed Farrel Coleman) and jumping between 1989 and 2002—some six years before and seven years after, respectively, the film itself. It starts one day after as Chris Shiherlis (start picturing 1995 Val Kilmer) trying to leave L.A., for its remainder jumping “from the streets of L.A. to the inner sanctums of rival Taiwanese crime syndicates in a South American free trade zone,...
