It always starts the same way. The opening few piano notes of something slow by Coldplay or Labrinth. A contestant swallows hard, then starts talking about their sick mum/child/dog. And suddenly, before Cheryl can even grab a tissue, you're sat on your sofa blubbing like a toddler.
Yes: The X Factor has given us some of the most heartbreaking moments on TV over the years. And from hysterics at Judges' Houses to Simon Cowell's own rare, salty tears, here are 6 moments that shattered us, ruined us and gave us every feeling possible.
1. Gamu Gate
The so-called 'Gamu Gate' has become a central part of X Factor lore. 18-year-old Zimbabwe-born Gamu Nhengu had given flawless performances throughout the whole show, right through to her rendition of 'Cry Me Out' for Cheryl and will.i.am at Judges' Houses. Maybe it's the pressure. Or the hot stage lights. Or the tantalising proximity of Simon's high-waisted trousers. But it wouldn't be a series of The X Factor without rumours of romances. Already this year we've had the usual nudges and winks wiggling their way out from Boot Camp.
But it's only in the pressure cooker of live shows that things really start heating up - and acts inevitably turn to each other for comfort. So prepare yourself with seven of our favourite ever X Factor romances...
1. Wagner and Mary Byrne (2010)
Is it any surprise that 54-year-old, Brazilian-born Wagner turned out to be something of a ladies' man? No woman can resist a guy with bongos, and his throwback picture of himself holding a lion's tail paved the way for men posing with big cats on dating apps.
In this case, the woman he allegedly wooed was Ballyfermot's Tesco Mary, with...

The X Factor final is only two weeks away, but one of the remaining five contestants will fail to reach the epic heights scaled by Christopher Maloney, Eoghan Quigg, et al after falling victim to this week's 'Musical Heroes' special.
Tonight, Sam Bailey, Tamera and co will attempt to secure a place in the semi-finals by singing tracks from their favourite artists, as well as a second song chosen by you! So any comments from the judges about song choice should be taken as a personal slight.
Join Digital Spy from 8pm as we experience the highs, lows and fluffled lyrics (Tamera's got two whole songs, it's inevitable) of 'Jukebox Week'.
21:46Tomorrow's results show sees 'two of X Factor's finest' performing, Rebecca Ferguson (fair enough, she's really nice) and James Arthur (....oh). Thanks for joining us on the live blog tonight, guys. Feel free to keep on commenting...

My favourite X Factor moment has to be 'Gummogate', a kerfuffle that saw Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh quarrelling over American independent cinema. Jamie Archer's rendition of 'Crying' during 2009's Movie Week (c'mon, Simon, have you *really* seen that film?) irked Louis so much he seemed to question the very existence of Harmony Korine's cult oddity. This all leads to the question... has Louis seen Spring Breakers?...

Sam Bailey: A+
Despite being tagged as this year's "Tesco Mary", given the tag "ScrewBo" by Louis Walsh and an alarming amount of interest from Michael Bolton, Sam has managed to overcome these hurdles and genuinely be considered a contender for the title. No easy feat for an act in the dreaded Overs category.
Sam's managed to not only hit all the big notes, she's also managed to make herself look like an artist who could sell a few records. The judges can't find a flaw, her blubbing husband gets us all emotional every time and she's proving to be consistently popular in the Digital Spy polls. We'd probably hate her if she wasn't so darn nice.

The penultimate episode of The Big Reunion airs this evening on ITV2 (March 21), and we're already unsure as to how we will cope when 5ive, B*Witched, 911 and co are no longer entertaining us with their dark tales of '90s pop excess.
Abz from 5ive has become a hilarious must-watch figure of fun and the heartbreaking split between B*Witched's Lindsay and 911's Lee has been a weirdly emotional watch. The whole thing has had us digging out our old Live & Kicking magazines and wondering whatever happened to Let Loose.
The show's proved a hit for ITV2, so they're going to need to bring it back in some form in 2014. Digital Spy has five suggestions for Big Reunion spinoffs.

Dido has said that she "quite liked" the covers of 'White Flag' she has heard on The X Factor.
The singer's 2003 hit has been reworked many times on both the UK and Us versions of the show, including for Diana Vickers's 2008 farewell performance where she was embraced by Eoghan Quigg.
"I've seen a couple of them and quite liked them," Dido told Metro of the covers.
"The best one was Stars in Their Eyes - why isn't that still on TV? I sent the contestant my Brits outfit to wear."
She added: "I saw Howard Jones doing 'White Flag' on one of those shows where musicians do one of their own songs and a cover.
"I thought, 'Oh my God, this is the circle of life', because I was obsessed with Howard Jones during my teenage years. That was quite a moment."

Former X Factor sweetheart Eoghan Quigg has shown off an impressive new physique and tattoos in a surprising photoshoot with Now magazine. The 20-year-old explained that he has been boxing to buff up and prove that he is no longer "that wee boy" who finished third in X Factor's 2008 series. "I've got a lot taller and my hair's shorter. I'm not as chubby as I used to be," he said, revealing: "I once boxed in an Irish championship." Quigg also suggested that he would have preferred to enter The X Factor now rather than in his teenage years. Asked if he regretted taking part in the show, he replied: "Not one bit. I had the best time of my life. The only thing I'd say is, it might have been better if I was the age I am now. "I was the youngest (more)...

Despite not making the X Factor final 12, hot man band The Reason have already landed themselves a record deal.
Scott White, Glenn Vine, Nathan Rawlings and Marc Higgins announced the news of their Facebook page last night, writing:
** Exciting News ** We can confirm that we have just been signed to Upside UK and will be getting into the studio straight to start work on our debut album due for release early 2011! Thanks for all your support.
We loved the boys as soon as we saw their initial audition in London but after their performance of a Daniel Beddingfield song at judges houses, Simon Cowell admitted that they hadn’t live up to his expectations saying:
“I thought we were going to hear stronger voices than that. I was disappointed with that.”
He later decided to choose five piece vocal harmony group Fyd over the lads.
Will you be buying The Reason’s album?...

The X Factor judges descended on Dublin today, for their first Irish auditions in four years!
The country has previously produced acts like The Conway Sisters, Phillip Magee and Eoghan Quigg for the show…..why wouldn’t they return?
Joining the normal panel – Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole – at the Dublin Convention Centre was none other than Katy Perry…the girl who likes kissing other girls….Cheryl Cole had better watch out or Derek Hough will be facing some stiff competition!
Check out our pictures of the judges at the venue. Perry donned a stunning silver and turquoise mini-dress and purple stilettos and sported a big plaster on her leg after sustaining an injury at an awards ceremony last week. She took to Twitter before arriving to exclaim:
“X Factor Dublin!!! Can’t wait to spot a star!!!”
Cheryl Cole looked amazing as ever in a khaki sleeveless playsuit and long gold earrings.

X Factor star Diana Vickers seems to be on the brink of great things. The 18 year old has just released her debut single which seems to be quickly climbing up the UK charts and announced her first UK tour, but what of young Eoghan Quigg who she became so attached to during her time on the ITV show?
No one can forget Eoghan’s near hysteria at seeing Diana voted off The X Factor or the subsequent pictures showing the pair locked in a romantic clinch, but Diana now admits that she hasn’t seen the Irish teenager since she left the X Factor house.
She told The Sun:
“Eoghan was just like a holiday fling.
“He was my rock on the show but you leave it behind when you get home.
“You move on and make new friends. I wish him all the best but we haven’t spoken at all since.

Jls - X Factor 2008
Jls are planning to write their second album during their upcoming UK tour.
The former X Factor runners up will embark on their sell out, 25 date tour in early 2010 and singer Marvin Humes told the Daily Star: “We’ll be getting stuck in, writing for the new album while on tour.
“That’s the way forward. It will be hectic but we’re not going to stop.
“Performing nearly every night will hopefully inspire something in us for the songs. For us, a song can come from anywhere. We’re up for anything and want to enjoy what we’re doing.”
The boys admitted that they have been greatly inspired by Justin Timberlake during their live shows.
Oritsé Williams explained: “When I first saw Justin it was wicked. He was lifted above the fans on a crane. That inspired us to pull out all of the stops.

Alexandra Burke may have won the title of "The X-Factor" season five winner but she has not won every heart. Moments after she beat Jls and Eoghan Quigg with 58 per cent of the public voting for her, supporters of the runner-ups flooded the online world to protest against the privileges given to Burke that eventually contributed to her winning.
Complaints are directed to producer Simon Cowell, who was accused of giving Burke the favor to duet with international artist like Beyonce Knowles in the final round, and 'only' gave the runner-ups the chance to sing with old-time groups, Westlife and Boyzone. On this criticism, Burke responded, "Who you duet with doesn't determine whether you win, it's how you perform. Simple as that."
Another thing is, Burke earned the spotlight after she was paired with the most popular judge, Chery Cole of Girls Aloud, as her mentor. This was fueled further...

Eoghan Quigg - 'Year 3000' Louis: "Eoghan, what a great start to the show, I like the way you rocked out, you have no fear and great confidence.
