Melissa Barrera feels like her 'Scream' character arc gave her "closure".The 33-year-old actress played Sam Carpenter - the daughter of 1996 'Scream' movie killer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) - in 2022's 'Scream' and its sequel 'Scream VI, but she was fired from upcoming flick 'Scream 7' due to her publicly pro-Palestinian stance. Her character's story dealt with the idea of whether the connection to her father meant Sam was always meant to be a murderer, but she was seen throwing her father's mask onto the concrete below.Speaking to Collider's Perri Nemiroff for 'Ladies Night', she said: "I feel like I've gotten closure. My head is clear."She added: “I feel like the ending of [Scream VI ] was a very good ending, and so I don’t feel like 'Ugh, I got left in the middle.'"No,...

The Scream franchise was fairly popular for releasing some of the most enjoyable horror movies in pop culture. Starting with the first Scream movie in 1996, this slasher franchise has 5 more movies and a TV show under its belt. But after Scream 6 (2023), things took a turn when actress Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise. Her social media post about the Israel-Hamas was deemed antisemitic by the production house behind the franchise, and they decided to let go of the actress in November last year.

Wes Craven, director of the first four films in the Scream franchise, passed away in 2015. So when Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media teamed up to revive the franchise with the new sequel that was released in 2022, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett took the helm. They then returned to direct Scream VI the following year, with both of their contributions to the franchise centering on sisters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed that they had been planning to return to direct Scream 7 and complete a Carpenter sisters trilogy… but they mistakenly thought they could fit the production of their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter) in between the making of Scream VI and Scream 7. Turns out, Spyglass wanted to get moving on Scream 7 sooner than their schedules allowed,...

The Core Four is no more. Although Scream (2022) and Scream VI set up the characters of Samantha Carpenter, Tara Carpenter, Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Chad Meeks-Martin as the new leads of the Scream franchise, that group is not going to end up being in Scream 7, whenever that film goes into production. Jenna Ortega allegedly wanted a substantial pay raise to reprise the role of Tara… and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. So Ortega was out, but Melissa Barrera was on board to come back as Tara’s sister Samantha. Until she was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. The hits keep coming on Scream 7. Weeks after Melissa Barrera was let go from the upcoming sequel, followed close behind by news that Jenna Ortega also left, director Christopher Landon announced via Twitter today that he formally exited the project weeks ago.
The filmmaker said, “I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”

Jenna Ortega’s commitments to the TV show Wednesday mean she’s the second person this week to depart the Scream franchise.
Commercially at least, 2023 has been a banner year for the Scream franchise. No matter what you thought of Scream VI, that landed at the start of the year, it certainly brought in the cash. A $44m opening weekend marked a highpoint for the series, and it didn’t take long for Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures to crack on with the idea of Scream 7.
A slight change of personnel was originally announced, with the directorial debut Radio Silence – who helmed the last two films – moving on to other projects. In their place came Christopher Landon, he of Happy Death Day and Freaky fame. A fine replacement.
But if all was going swimmingly where Scream 7 was concerned, it’s all been a bit upended this year.

The Scream franchise began in 1996, with the slasher film series accruing a diehard fan base that lobbied for more movies after Scream 4's underwhelming box office performance led to the cancellation of its sequels.

In the wake of the news that "Scream" star Melissa Barrera had been removed from "Scream VII" by Spyglass Media Group over social media comments that the company deemed antisemitic, it was announced today that another member of the "core four" would not be returning for the slasher sequel, albeit under different circumstances. Jenna Ortega may be a fan of scary movies, but she’s no longer a part of the “Scream 7.”
Following rumors that Ortega was looking to part ways with the Spyglassfilms after her breakout role in Netflix series “Wednesday,” the actress confirmed she will not appear in “Scream 7,” sources tell IndieWire. Deadline first reported the news, citing that Ortega’s contract was being reevaluated prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Ortega is set to film “Wednesday” Season 2 in Ireland from April 2024 into the summer, and that “Scream 7” has a scheduling conflict.
Ortega starred in the fifth “Scream” film as Tara Carpenter, which served as a franchise reboot (meta-ly deemed “requel” in the movie). She reprised the role for “Scream VI.”
Ortega’s announcement comes on the heels of co-star Melissa Barrera, who plays Ortega’s onscreen half-sister, being fired for antisemitic comments that production company Spyglass Entertainment deemed antisemitic.

Scream 7 is going to be a very different movie than we were expecting it to be when it was first announced. Although the 2022 Scream film introduced new lead characters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, and Scream VI saw the Carpenter sisters solidifying their connection with the Meeks-Martin twins (Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy and Mason Gooding as Chad) to call themselves the new “core four” characters of the franchise… at least half of the core four as going to be absent from Scream 7. Yesterday, we learned that Barrera has been fired from the film after making controversial comments on social media. Now Deadline has confirmed that Ortega will also be missing from the new sequel.

Although her character, franchise heroine Sidney Prescott, was originally included in the script for Scream VI (watch it Here), Neve Campbell ended up passing on the offer to reprise the role for that film due to a pay dispute. Soon after the film was released, her Scream co-star Skeet Ulrich (who makes brief appearances in the 2022 Scream and Scream VI) said Campbell loved what they did with the latest sequel… but while doing a Q&a at the 2023 Monster-Mania Con, Campbell revealed that she only recently watched the film. It took her longer than we thought to see it, but her reaction was a positive one in the end.
Campbell told the Monster-Mania crowd (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “I hadn’t watched it until two weeks ago. It took me a minute, I don’t know why. I actually thought they did a really good job.

Actor David Arquette, 51, who appeared in the first five Scream films, admits that he was “sad” seeing the latest film in the franchise.
Arquette played the staple character of Dewey Riley in the series. Dewey was killed off in the fifth film, leaving die-hard fans reeling at his loss.
In a plot twist in Scream 5, Ghostface – the iconic series antagonist – slaughters Arquette’s Dewey. It happens after Dewey rescues new character Tara Carpenter (Wednesday’s Jenny Ortega) from near death.
Fans were horrified to see his character killed. Dewey had come close to death before, but it took five films for him to finally meet his demise.
Still, Arquette went to a screening of the latest instalment in the Scream franchise.
“It was hard for me to do it, but I also knew I wanted to see it,” Arquette told Variety’s Marc Malkin.

David Arquette admits seeing “Scream 6” wasn’t easy after his beloved Dewey character was killed off in the fifth installment of the horror franchise.
“It was hard for me to do it, but I also knew I wanted to see it,” the actor told me Thursday at the premiere of his new Peacock series, “Mrs. Davis,” at the DGA in West Hollywood. “I loved it.”
He continued, “It was sad. I had lots of Fomo.”

Two weeks ago, Scream VI (read our review Here) surpassed the worldwide box office total of last year’s Scream movie, leaving its $139 million haul in the dust. As of right now, Scream VI has pulled in $162,210,554 worldwide… and it has reached another milestone. Scream VI crossed the $100 million mark domestically this past weekend, and has now become the highest-grossing entry in the entire franchise at the domestic box office. Until now, the original Scream – released back in 1996 – had been sitting in the top spot with $103 million. Now Scream VI is at the top with $104,410,554 and counting. Complex lists the domestic box office for previous entries: “Scream 2 earned $101 million in 1997, Scream 3 made $89 million in 2000, Scream 4 pulled in just $38 million in 2011, and Scream (2022) ended its domestic run at $81.6 million.”

Last year, the Scream franchise returned the big screen after an eleven year absence – and last year’s Scream was such a hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office on a budget of $24 million, that Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media quickly greenlit another sequel. Scream VI (read our review Here) had a slightly higher budget, in the range of $35 million, but it’s also turning out to be an even bigger box office success than its predecessor. Scream VI‘s global box office total currently stands at $139.2 million. In just over two weeks of release, it has surpassed Scream 2022’s box office. As fans of Scream know very well by now, Scream VI (read our review Here) is the first entry in the slasher franchise not to feature Neve Campbell as heroine Sidney Prescott. The Sidney character was originally part of the story written by Scream 2022 writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, but she had to be written out when Campbell passed on the project due to a pay dispute. If you’re wondering if Campbell is feeling any negativity about the Scream movie they made without her, her Scream co-star Skeet Ulrich – who returns for hallucinatory appearances in Scream 2022 and Scream VI – is here to assure you that she doesn’t. In fact, Ulrich said Campbell “loved” the new movie.
Speaking with People, Ulrich said he had talked to Campbell about Scream VI when they were both at a recent convention. He told them, “She loves it; she loves what we’ve done.

The Scream franchise was given a new life by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella for the first time since Wes Craven’s Scream 4 in 2010. The year 2022 mixed legacy characters with new ones for future Ghostfaces to hunt. There’s a variety of places that the Scream horror franchise would go from here, so why not space?
